El Chico is possibly the most famous chain of Tex-Mex restaurants. Begun sometime around the 1960's, El Chico is
supplosedly the repository of the recipes from the original Oklahoma City El Charrito restaurant that was located on
Paseo Street.
However, El Chico has never managed to replicate El Charrito's quality, and this is compounded by the fact that El Chico has numerous locations with numerous managers, cooks, etc. Although this particular location in OKC is one of the best I have tried, it is very inconsistent, varying from the best ever chain Tex-Mex food (almost as good as a non-chain restaurant) to food that I vow to erase from my memory and never again to force my stomach and taste buds to endure. At this point the good experiences are more numerous, but they are getting less frequent. I'm afraid this El Chico has gone the way of many of the other franchises and caters to people who do not really know Mexican food. The Cheese Enchiladas with rice and beans have always been one of the best things to order here. Do not order the tortilla soup. It is barely recognizable, and if you have ever eaten tortilla soup in El Paso you will be insulted by El Chico's version. The complimentary queso served as an appetizer at El Chico has to be the worst ever (as is the salsa). Even when the enchiladas are good, it is hard to justify the price you must pay here considering how disappointing the rest of the meal is likely to be. As is the case with a few other restaurants, I must also point out the fact that this El Chico has somehow found a way to abuse the city's ordinances and failed to provide handicapped parking. |
