I used to think Gopuram was one of the best restaurants in Oklahoma, but either it has changed or my taste has
gotten more refined from eating Indian food in Seattle, because I now think Gopuram barely passes for Indian
food.
For my first few visits the buffet was the only thing I tried. The dinner buffet is a pretty good deal--it's either $10 or $11 depending on whether you go during the week or on weekends, but Indian food buffets are really a poor substitute for Thali--a sampler plate served in the finer Indian restaurants. Even though I think the food in the buffet has a good flavor, it suffers from several things--it is largely meat-based (an accommodation to Oklahoma's eating habits), there is a relatively small selection of items (both on the buffet and the regular menu), the food is not spiced enough (another necessity for restaurants in Oklahoma to stay in business), and the food is not kept warm enough if you happen to arrive when the food has been sitting out for a while. Vegetable Korma is the best item I have had from the buffet. There is a menu available, although I made several visits before I discovered that it existed. One interesting menu item (and also available for take-out) is the dosa, served in several varieties. It looks like a large burrito with a potato filling. The chutneys served in small bowls give it an appealing flavor--eaten plain it is very bland. I thought the dosa was good, but not something I would rush back to order. The menu has several other choices, including some vegetarian items. There is even Thai listed on the menu "on certain days." I asked when those days were and they could not tell me--they said "probably on weekends" but it is not guaranteed. If I could ever try this sampler plate I would probably have a good idea about the true quality of the food at Gopuram--I think the buffet is the worst method of eating Indian food. |
