Oklahoma has traditionally had a hard time bringing in authentic and truly good ethnic restaurants such as Asian and
Mexican, but with a large number of German immigrants it seems to excel in this particular genre of food.
Royal Bavaria is one of the premier German restaurants in the state, and as good as the food is, the beer is arguably even better. I have eaten German food from Washington, DC to Washington State, and the offering here is near the top in quality. There are a few flaws, such as some of the side dishes that are not up to par. Although the beer here is great, it's not the best I've had. Probably the biggest flaw with the restaurant is that it is too "touristy," concentrating on the experience, serving huge portions, charging plenty for it, and charging extra for the bread (I think the prices are high enough that they could afford to give you the bread for free). One entrée I sampled was truly outstanding--Hähnchenbrust in Cognacsause (chicken breast in cognac gravy with mushrooms). The Sauerbraten was good but not outstanding. I did not like the fact that the non-smoking section is very small and I could not totally escape the smoke from the other part of the room. I feel that overall it does not have the down-home atmosphere and excellent food that Keller In Kastle offered (see my review under the "Closed" restaurant section), but it is still a pretty good choice if you want some much better than average ethnic food. Note: Oklahoma has now passed a "no smoking" law that has eliminated the smoke from all the restaurants in which it used to be a problem. |
