Lan Xang is one of the several Laotian restaurants in about a three block stretch of Amarillo Boulevard (Old US 66) on the northeast side of Amarillo. Like the other Laotian restaurants it has a large number of non-Asian customers that mainly order take-home. It also has a large number of Thai and other non-Lao dishes with which Americans are more familiar.

The staff acted quite surprised when I specifically asked for Laotian food, and even more surprised when I ordered Papaya Salad (they said something to the effect "Americans do not like papaya salad"). It turned out to be probably the best I have had in Amarillo--a little sour with a good sauce. To me papaya salad makes a good side dish--I wouldn't want to make an entire meal out of it.

I also ordered Kra Pao Chicken. The waitress had a hard time explaining it. She said it had coconut, but it turned out to be a curry made with coconut milk--in fact one of the most delicious curries I've ever had, and the chicken was all white meat. It came in a large bowl and when I was getting near the end of about a meal-and-a-half serving size I was not enjoying it quite as much as at first. Neverthless this is a highly recommended dish, especially if you can share it.

I think all Laotian meals should come with Sticky Rice, but I did not like the sticky rice here as much as at the other places (it is also more expensive here).

Still, I think flavor-wise and quality-wise this is one of the best Laotian restaurants in Amarillo. It is more expensive than LM Restaurant, but it probably offers a few things LM does not, or at least a slightly different way of preparing things.

My initial visit was on Christmas Eve 2004. I was happy that the restaurant was even open, and even more happy that they were eager to fulfill my request of turning the television to a station showing a Christmas Eve service. I loved the food, and everything about the experience was enjoyable.
