BROOD: THE LEGACY

History of Uncle Dave's Supers Game World

The game world started as a CHAMPIONS campaign shortly after I read a magazine article in which Aaron Allston described the setting for his super-hero game. In short, all my favorite characters from the comics debut in the game world around the same year the were actually first published. They adventure, change, grow and age from there.

This timeline details the history of my super hero game world. I'll be adding to it from time to time as I find and convert more old notes to webscript. I'd be remiss if I didn't credit those who've helped provide words or thought towards this campaign through the years. Click

The Distant Past

20 BILLION
YEARS AGO:
Before the stars came to be…when the galaxies were mere cosmic dust…there existed the first being of the universe. Though his name would later become synonymous with destruction, it is from the creation of GALACTUS that we mark the beginning of the universe.
15 BILLION
YEARS AGO:
The universe is formed by the Big Bang. Whatever came before gave way to entropy and imploded, resulting in a cosmos wide burst of new life. The entirety of creation fills the void (called the Chaosplasm) that remains just outside the matter of creation.

The sole existing being is shredded by the blast, creating two new beings of equal power called Monitor and Anti-Monitor. The Anti-Monitor flees to the Negative zone dimension and begins his dominion there. The Monitor becomes the care-taker of this universe, creating the race known as the Watchers to aid him. Galactus, diminished by the power of the two Monitors, acquires a never-ending hunger that can only be satisfied by the living energies of worlds. Satiated with the power of the Big Bang, Galactus sleeps for millions of years.

During this period the Endless come into existence and at the heart of creation Heaven is formed. The greatest of the angels, Lucifer Lightbringer, rebels against Heaven and is cast into the Chaosplasm along with his rebellious allies, creating Hell.

10 BILLION
YEARS AGO:
The Maltusian civilization is the first race in the universe to survive through its early emotional, violent, and destructive period and achieve a 'perfect' society. For the next five billion years the Maltusians prosper, moving to the planet Oa when the Maltusian sun goes nova. During their relocation, the Maltusians/Oans realize their actions are being observed by a Watcher, but the Watcher avoids contact.
5 BILLION
YEARS AGO:
Oan scouts discover the Celestials, race as advanced and more powerful than their own, however, much fewer in number. The Celestials appear to be evolved from the Chaosplasm, making communication difficult. Contact between the two races is rare and un-rewarding for both.

An Oan scientist named Krona, influenced by the Anti-Monitor, violates the sole restriction they have placed on scientific research, the origin of the universe itself. This clash between science and magic has several catastrophic results, the first being that the very fabric of space itself rips in half, allowing the Anti-Monitor to steal power from his rival, causing the Negative Zone and this universe to be equal in size, power and potential. The reverberations of this echo through our positive-matter universe and release a wave of Evil that threatens to overwhelm everything. The Oans also quickly theorize that the loss of half of the universe's mass and energy upsets a careful balance between order and entropy and that a billion years of the universe's lifespan has been lost. In addition, they fear that entropy will eventually consume the universe, instead of the universe existing forever in a continual state of destruction and recreation (the Big Bang-Big Crunch-Big Bang theory.)

One additional side effect of Krona's experiment that the Oans are unaware of is the creation of elemental forces in the wake of the creation of the two universes. These elemental forces, some of creative energies and others of leftover Chaosplasm, will eventually evolve into the mystical Lords of Order and Chaos.

To punish Krona for his experiments (Krona, like all the Oans, is immortal and survived the explosion of his equipment) the other Oans transform him into pure energy and banish him to the farthest reaches of the universe, condemned to wander forever (Krona manages to come, back and cause trouble again in the 20th century but it is believed that he suffered a final defeat in the 1980's and is gone forever.) The Oans dedicate themselves to undoing the effects of Krona's experiment and rename themselves the Guardians of the Universe. However, one faction of the Oans feels that stemming the growth of evil is not enough, that it is necessary to exterminate evil wherever it is found. This faction leaves Oa for places unknown and eventually forms the organization known as the Controllers (who, like the Guardians, will create a universal force to carry out their wishes, the Darkstars.)

The first task the Guardians of the Universe undertake is to collect and dispose of the magical energies of the universe; unable to control or understand magic, and because the conflict between magic and science was the source of the disaster Krona unleashed, the Guardians fear it and seek to deny it to any who would use it. After several million years the Guardians succeed in collecting a significant portion of the magical energies of the universe but they are unable to destroy it. They instead bury it deep within the heart of a star where no one will presumably be able to find it and use it. (What the Guardians do not anticipate is the magical energies gaining sentience and being able to send a portion of itself out of the star. This piece of the "Starheart" eventually makes its way to Earth where it leads to the origin of Green Lantern I (Alan Scott)in the 20th century.)

Weakened by this loss of magical energies, a demonic race (but not to be confused with the demons of Hell) known as the Predead are banished from the face of what will become Earth by a race known as the Time-less Ones (mistakenly identified as the Lords of Order in some mystic writings). With the Earth purged of these beings, 'normal' life begins to evolve. The first life forms to gain sentience are the plants. Yggdrasil, the world-tree, is the first of Earth's "children" to gain sentience, due in part to a visit out of time by the 20th century Swamp Thing.

3 BILLION
YEARS AGO:
The Kree Empire achieves starflight and begins exploring space around them.

The Guardians attempt to create a race of warriors to patrol the universe and combat evil first-hand. Their first experiment results in the lizard-like Psions, a failure. After. several million years the Psions revolt and start carving out an empire, leading the Guardians to banish them to one star system, the Vegan system in the Milky Way galaxy.

The Guardians second attempt is the creation of androids called the Manhunters. The Manhunters appear to work better than the Psions but in truth they're just better at concealing their betrayal, to the point that when the Guardians do finally discover it they are unable to confine the Manhunters to just one system as they did with the Psions. (The Manhunters return to threaten the universe several more times before finally being destroyed in the 20th century.)

2.5 BILLION
YEARS AGO:
The Skrull Empire achieves starflight. Encountering the Kree, they declare the first of hundreds of Kree-Skrull (and later sometimes Khund/Dominator/etc.) wars.

The female Oans (who apparently did not become Guardians) become fed up with the obsession of the males in fighting evil and leave them. (Eventually the female Oans become a fearsome warrior race known as the Zamarons who come into conflict with the Guardians several times before reconciling with them in the 20th century.)

2 BILLION
YEARS AGO:
The Dominator and Khund races achieve starflight. They join the stellar community as aggressive combatants for domination. After millions of years of expansion, discovery and war, the major space empires of the Psions, Khund, Kree, Skrull and Dominators occupies nearly half of the known universe.

The Guardians finally draft a plan that serves them well through the next two billion years, the Green Lantern Corps. By recruiting the bravest and most worthy beings from across space to aid them in their cause the Guardians avoid the problems that led to the failure of the Psions and Manhunters. The Green Lanterns patrol "free space" not belonging to one of the existing space empires.

1 BILLION
YEARS AGO:
A race known as the Lizard Kings becomes the first native Earth race to create a civilization, one based on magic. But this primordial golden age comes to an end in a great terrestrial armageddon, clearing the way for the next species to evolve into intelligence, humanity.
5 MILLION
YEARS AGO:
The Celestials visit Earth. In what is thought to be an experiment, they create five pantheons of god-like beings (Greek/Roman, Norse/German, Asian, Central American, and Kirby Old Gods) and place them in pocket dimensions with easy access to Earth. At first, the pantheons fight for total control of the Earth, but soon agree to their respective sections. Eventually, most gods get bored with Earth altogether, and visit or meddle rarely, if ever.
100 THOUSAND
YEARS AGO:
The first great human civilization arises on Atlantis. An early conflict between the forces of science and magic is ended peacefully, allowing Atlantis to flourish and achieve levels in both areas far in excess of anything seen again (to date) on Earth.
50 THOUSAND
YEARS AGO:
The Skrull empire dumps the results of the a failed attempt to create super soldiers on Earth. These beings become known at the Eternals and the Deviants. Offspring of these beings will later be known as Inhumans. Avoiding contact with man, the Eternals and Deviants bond together and relocate to Titan, a moon of Saturn. After spending some time adventuring amongst the Earth's super hero community, the Inhumans retire to a special base on the moon.
15 THOUSAND
YEARS AGO:
Atlantis is destroyed; first the great city of Atlantis is lost in a battle with an alien invasion force and then the entire island continent is later lost to the floodwaters of the retreating Ice Age. The only remnants of Atlantean civilization are the cities of Poseidonis and Tritonis, who find ways to survive beneath the ocean's surface.

Human civilization is sent back to the Stone Age. During this period, Vandal Savage becomes the first immortal human. The loss of Atlantis also removes much of the magical energies remaining on Earth, which destroys the divine forces that sprung from those energies. In their place arise primeval, elemental forces that will eventually be shaped by human belief into "gods".

During this period, Vandal Savage becomes the first immortal human.

Ancient History

5 THOUSAND
YEARS AGO:
Civilization begins to rebuild itself around the world. It is in these early societies that godlike forces begin appearing on Earth; the wizard Shazam, Nabu (a Lord of Order who eventually becomes known as Doctor Fate), Rama Kushna and a host of deities such as the Norse, Egyptian and Greek pantheons. The offshoot of homo sapiens known as homo magi is believed to have started in this time period.
1200 BC: The Amazons of ancient Greece leave "man's world" for the mystical island of Themyscira, deep in the Atlantic Ocean. It is this isolation that allows the Amazons to survive to the present day and re-enter the world in the 1920's.
1ST CENTURY
AD:
Far from Earth (in fact, in another dimension) a race of Old Gods dies, giving birth to the New Gods and their two homeworlds, New Genesis and Apokolips.
6TH CENTURY
AD:
The great kingdom of Camelot is created in Britain; during its short existence it echoes much of the majesty of lost Atlantis. But as with the loss of Atlantis, the loss of Camelot removes more of the remaining magical energies on Earth. Attempts during the Middle Ages to recreate Camelot fall far short, and magic becomes weaker as science gains a stronger foothold throughout much of the world, though isolated pockets where magic remains strong can be found up through the 20th century.
15TH CENTURY
AD:
The world becomes so inhospitable to magical creatures that many leave the Earth plane forever, travelling to other dimensions where magic remains strong. One such group settles the Gemworld.

As with Krona, the Guardians cannot kill their comrade, so they transform him into energy and disperse him through the universe.
