The Safety Rodeo is one of the programs
sponsored by the 4H for ATV riders. It is designed to instruct new riders
and old hands in the safe operation of their ATV. This program offers the
student many possible and probable situations they may encounter while traveling
the trails and tracks of the great outdoors.

The rodeo introduces each rider to their ATV; from the
basic functions of their vehicle, to operations while traversing a slope,
this covers it all. You will know more about your ATV and be a
better, safer rider when you are done.
| |
| Each is
taught what fluids need to be checked, how to check them, and how to
perform a basic safety inspection of their ATV before ever starting the
engine. Then they learn how to properly go through a starting
sequence to ensure all safety aspects have been covered. |
| |
Once on the track, the riders learn
the basics of stopping. You would think that this simple task would
be easily accomplished. Yet for the "Member" Instructors, there is
no such thing as a "simple" stop. Stopping while going straight,
while turning, while coming down a hill. Proper application of the
braking system is quickly discerned from the employment of unrefined
"binder jamming." |
| |
The students learn to "keep an eye on
the road." Scan the horizon, look for obstacles, make a plan, and
implement the action. All this in a matter of seconds. And
they learn to do this continuously. The "Figure Eight" at speed
proves this out! |
| |
And where do ATV's frequently find
themselves; on hills of course! No safety rodeo would be complete
without a hill ride. This hill though is only for practice.
Riders practice how to traverse sloped ground if they are going up, down,
or sideways. Each has it's own problems and corrections. Ride
right with no fright! |
| |
And what to do if you find an
obstacle in your path? Go around it, or go over it. Here the
student leans to "hop" over small items in his or her path. Proper
application of the throttle can easily propel you over an otherwise
dangerous encounter. |
| |

If you quickly need to change
direction, say to go around an obstacle, or simply a change in the trails
path, you need to know how. Improper turning can cause the ATV to
flip over; a serious threat to rider safety and health. Proper
initiation of throttle, body lean and positioning help to contribute a
successful turn. |

And there is so much more! If
you get the chance, take this course. It will improve your riding
ability, no matter what your skill level! |
