- In September 1974, I began kindergarten at Robert S. Gallaher Elementary School in Newark, Delaware. I was quickly shifted out of kindergarten into some sort of accelerated program at the University of Delaware, then spent most of my first grade year in a third grade classroom back at Gallaher.
- I moved to Colorado in March 1976 and attended through grade six at Martin Park Elementary School (which JonBenet Ramsey would later attend) and grades seven through nine at Nevin J. Platt Jr. High School
- 8th in a class of 547(?), 3.96 GPA, Fairview High School, Boulder, CO, May 1987.
- B.A. with distinction in physics and mathematics (and the rough equivalent of a minor in astronomy, but Colorado did not offer minors from 1968-1991), 3.75 GPA, Phi Beta Kappa, Sigma Pi Sigma, University of Colorado (Boulder, Colorado), May 1991.
- M.A. in Curriculum and Instruction (science education), 4.0 GPA, Phi Delta Kappa, University of Colorado (Denver, Colorado), Aug. 1995.

High School Prisons?

The new Delaware State Penitentiary, c. 1992
When I was attending Fairview High School in Boulder from 1984-1987, there was a legend that our school had been designed by someone who usually designs prisons. Imagine my surprise when I had a look at the new Delaware State Penitentiary! Except for the security fence around its perimeter and the addition of some extra windows, it looks almost exactly like Fairview.
"The willows must scuttle carefully."
