I spent two weeks in July 2001 at NASA's John H. Glenn Research Center at Lewis Field in Cleveland, Ohio with three other Southfield High School teachers (Mike Terrell, Sherise Lee and Rick Vosler) and one Detroit teacher (Claudia Burton). We developed a team action plan, involving a NASA-oriented curriculum for the Southfield High School Engineering Program, culminating in a themed senior project for all Engineering Academy graduates. As a subproject, intended to better prepare Engineering Academy students in my AP Physics and General Physical Science classes for the senior project, I adapted some of my old curriculum, and developed new activities and projects, using NASA activities, resources and themes from the workshop to drive the curriculum in the right direction. It is my hope that these new activities not only help my Engineering Academy students gain an edge on their senior project, but that the new curriculum will better prepare all of my students for the state MEAP high school proficiency test and the College Board's Advanced Placement Physics exam.
