In early 1988, I purchased my first handgun. I already owned several
rifles and a shotgun, and enjoyed shooting them. I had shot handguns a
bit, although by no means, extensively, mostly at local gun ranges. A
few whilst serving in the military.
But I wasn't sure what handgun I wanted. So I read, researched and asked
a lot of questions from those folks more knowledgable than myself. The
end result, after much thought, was a new pistol, that had only recently
arrived on the market. A polymer framed (some sneered "plastic" ) semi
auto known as a Glock.
These pistols had only recently become available to the general public,
for a couple of years, they had been only sold to law enforcement. A
smart marketing move on the part of the company. The story of the
developement of the pistol is interesting, but I won't go into it here,
rather you should go
here
Since then, I have put over 15,000 rounds through my Glock, and
recently, had to replace the only part that had malfunctioned to date.
The trigger pin, a steel pin that holds the trigger assembly together,
broke, and I replaced it myself at the cost of a couple of dollars. Not
bad for a gun that has 15 hard years of use.
The gun has been very reliable, feeding everything I threw at it, except
"Silver Bear" brand Russian ammo, said ammo had rather inconsistant
dimensions, and sometimes required a "tap" to the slide to come into
battery.
I had replaced the original sights, with a set of Trijicon night sights,
and they have worked out well.
I have been using this pistol in weekly plate shoots at a local range
and have been pleased with the accuracy, and light recoil. All in all,
the gun is a pleasure to shoot, and has proven to be a good bargain for
me. But it is a bit bulky for summer concealed carry, and I will be
looking for something a little smaller for the warmer months. Maybe I
should buy a Glock 26...
