This seminal event in the history of these united states deserves to be remembered as a sacrifice, made by the over 600,000 causualties on both sides. Making the civil war the most costly war in American history, from Fort Sumpter to Appomattox, Americans fought and died for their beliefs, however flawed some of them were.
I am not going to get into a debate over slavery, or state's rights, or wax rhapsodic over "might have beens". Others have covered those details far better than I could begin to do so.
