The availability of responsive themes such as Twenty Eleven allow the easy creation of mobile friendly web sites. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 WordPress is customizable with thousands of themes and plugins. You can edit the Style Sheets of themes or create child themes to further customize the look and feel. It&#8217;s open sourced, so if you really want to dig in, there is absolutely nothing that you can&#8217;t modify.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Using WordPress gives you complete <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">control over your blogs look, <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">feel, and content. MySQL provides good performance and compatibility. If you do not have a MySQL database (<em>they&#8217;re included with your shell account<\/em>), please <a href=\"mailto:  support@eskimo.com\">e-mail support<\/a> or generate a ticket with the password you would like. The login will be the same as your shell login.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Unpack WordPress into the location you desire. For example, say your login is &#8220;user&#8221; and you want your WordPress site to appear at \/~user\/site.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Login to shellx.eskimo.com. You need to have a shell terminal window. After you are logged in you will be in your home directory, (\/home\/<em>login<\/em>).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 All of your web files go in a directory called &#8220;public_html&#8221; in your home directory unless it is an adult site in which case it goes in &#8220;adult_html&#8221;. There is no need to create one by hand. I suggest you <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">give it a name that identifies your WordPress site so if you start multiple WordPress <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">you can easily tell what tables belong to what site. If that happens, it is easy to fix.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 See the little circular thing with two arrows chasing each other? That <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">is the update page. If it has a number, it means that there are updates <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">available.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Updates to WordPress are super-easy to apply. Click on it and about a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">second later WordPress will be updated.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Updates to WordPress are much less frequent than updates to themes and <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">plugins which seem to be almost daily. These will show up below WordPress <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">updates. WordPress seems a bit <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">daunting and overwhelming at first, but it is fairly intuitive and easy to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">learn.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">Optimizing<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Object Cache<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 To make your blog go fast, go to the Plugins tab and select New <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">Plugins. In the search box, put &#8220;Object Cache memcached&#8221;, and hit the <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">search button. Select an object cache plugin that supports memcached.\u00a0 I recommend, &#8220;Memcached Is Your Friend&#8221;.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 After installation is complete, that will typically take about a <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">second, select activate.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The Zend PHP engine works by compiling PHP code into intermediate <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">pseudocode and then interpreting that code. Then, the next time that code is encountered, it doesn&#8217;t have to <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">be compiled again, it can be executed right out of cache.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The plugin is free, requires zero configuration, and does it&#8217;s job <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">well. It actually supports a number of different cache engines, it just <\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">happens that memcached is the one we have and it knows how to use it.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"\/support\/web-space\/wordpress\/cache-plugins\/\">Cache Plugins<\/a><\/span><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 For most people I would recommend WP-Cache.Com, if you have only static or infrequently changing content.\u00a0 If you have dynamic content then I would recommend WP Fastest Cache for most people.\u00a0 It&#8217;s fast, reliable, and has a good functional exclusion setting so you can exclude dynamic content from being cached.\u00a0 For those who prefer more configurable caching, WP Super Cache or W3 Total Cache both offer a greater deal of flexibility however, WP Super Cache does not have a way to exclude specific pages.\u00a0 Click on the above link for more details.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">AntiSpam<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Another very useful plugin is the Akismet anti-spam plugin. This is simply the most effective anti-spam software I have ever seen.
