{"id":761,"date":"2015-08-15T23:36:38","date_gmt":"2015-08-15T23:36:38","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/?page_id=761"},"modified":"2015-08-17T01:02:44","modified_gmt":"2015-08-17T01:02:44","slug":"using-linux","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/using-linux\/","title":{"rendered":"Using Linux"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 20pt; color: #008000;\">Using Linux<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There are two primary ways to access and utilize linux.\u00a0 For further information on using either of these methods, please see the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/using-linux\/old-school-cli\/\">Old School CLI<\/a> and New School GUI drop down menu pages.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/using-linux\/old-school-cli\/\">Old School CLI<\/a><br \/>\n<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/using-linux\/old-school-cli\/\">old school<\/a> way is to connect with some form of command line interface connection such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/man\/ssh\/\">ssh<\/a> or the older telnet or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/man\/rlogin\/\" target=\"_blank\">rlogin<\/a> protocols and access a command line interpreter known in the Unix and Linux world as a shell.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you prefer to use a command line interpreter or shell, it is best to use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/man\/ssh\/\">ssh<\/a> to connect rather than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/man\/rlogin\/\" target=\"_blank\">rlogin<\/a> or telnet because <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/man\/ssh\/\">ssh<\/a> provides an encrypted channel so that your login and password and any other data that transverses the connection can not be captured or sniffed by unauthorized third parties.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 If you are originating from a Windows machine, a free program called &#8220;<a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiark.greenend.org.uk\/~sgtatham\/putty\/download.html\" target=\"_blank\">putty<\/a>&#8221; can provide this functionality.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.chiark.greenend.org.uk\/~sgtatham\/putty\/download.html\" target=\"_blank\">Putty<\/a> is also available on some Linux systems. On Mac and Linux systems, an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/man\/ssh\/\">ssh<\/a> client is a native part of the operating system.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 14pt;\">New School GUI<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The new school way is to connect with a remote desktop application such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/remote-desktop\/x2go\/\" target=\"_blank\">X2Go<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/remote-desktop\/opennx\/\" target=\"_blank\">NX<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/remote-desktop\/chicken-vnc\/\">VNC<\/a>, or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/remote-desktop\/using-windows-remote-desktop-connection\/\">RDP<\/a> to provide a full graphical remote desktop complete with graphical applications, keyboard, mouse, monitor, and if you use <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/remote-desktop\/x2go\/\" target=\"_blank\">X2Go<\/a> even sound, printer, and USB devices.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/remote-desktop\/x2go\/\" target=\"_blank\">X2Go<\/a> is the preferred method of connecting graphically.\u00a0 It is based on remote X-windows but it performs round-trip reduction that eliminates many X-windows back-and forth displays, it has excellent compression that makes even real-time video possible over a reasonably fast connection, and it securely tunnels everything through ssh so your session is secured from third party eavesdropping.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\"><span style=\"font-family: arial,helvetica,sans-serif; font-size: 12pt;\">\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 You can find an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/remote-desktop\/x2go\/\" target=\"_blank\">X2Go<\/a> client for Windows, Mac, or Linux at the <a href=\"http:\/\/wiki.x2go.org\/doku.php\/doc:installation:x2goclient\" target=\"_blank\">X2Go.org<\/a>.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/remote-desktop\/x2go\/\" target=\"_blank\">X2Go<\/a> client for Redhat will work with Centos and Scientific Linux.\u00a0 The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/support\/remote-desktop\/x2go\/\" target=\"_blank\">X2Go<\/a> client for Ubuntu will also work with other Debian derived Linux systems.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Using Linux \u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 There are two primary ways to access and utilize linux.\u00a0 For further information on using either of these methods, please see the Old School CLI and New School GUI drop down menu pages.
