These native maples get their name from their irregular, multi-trunked growth habit. In the fall, their leaves turn bright red, orange, or yellow, depending upon elevation, moisture, and temperature. In the wild, vine maples usually grow as an understory tree. A witch's broom mutation, known as Little Gem, is much shorter and denser.
