Mosier Twin Tunnels Segment
This 4.5 mile segment climbs steadily to the twin tunnels and then drops down to the eastern trailhead of the Historic Columbia Gorge Highway State Trail.
The Mosier tunnels in 1916, before they were completed and the highway was paved
The Mosier Twin Tunnels section of the trail begins at the Hatfield Visitor Center in Hood River.
A long rock catchment cover protects cyclists from loose debris on the sheer cliff above.
During the restoration, parts of the tunnel were reinforced to prevent ceiling rocks from breaking loose.
The completed twin tunnels

(Note the stairway to an observation area.)
Like the iconic Mitchell Point Tunnel, the Mosier tunnels contain openings to the cliff face for observation.
The original stairs, shown in two photos above, have been preserved in place, although they are no longer safe.  (Were they ever?)  Iron bars covering the opening prevent access.
Exiting the tunnels, you begin a 1.5 mile descent to the Mosier trailhead.
The large observation area on the left gives you a panoramic view of the gorge.
You are now in eastern Oregon.  The dense forests and waterfalls have been replaced by bare rock, grass, and scattered pines.
