All other passengers must remain on board until cleared.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The captain has <a href=\"https:\/\/waggonerguide.com\/boating-tips\/u-s-and-canada-customs\/\">two options<\/a> for reporting: a. Visit the Customs and Border Protection (CBP) office in town.<br \/>b. We were pleased to meet the mayor at a roof top bar and discussed the fire levy signs prevalent during our September 2024 visit. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">On April 7, 2022, a major fire occurred in Friday Harbor, causing significant damage to historic buildings:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8211; The fire destroyed three historic buildings and damaged three others in the center of town, just above the ferry dock.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8211; The affected buildings housed over 125 years of Friday Harbor history.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">&#8211; The fire was determined to be arson, and a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.historylink.org\/File\/22571\">suspect was arrested<\/a> within 10 days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"p1\">This incident highlights the vulnerability of Friday Harbor&#8217;s historic structures and the potential need for enhanced fire protection.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The mayor believed the fire levy would pass and that his city wasn\u2019t particularly fire prone. This appears to be an unsubstantiated statement or may require further research to verify. However the mayor pointed out that Friday Harbor is environmentally pristine and this could explain life expectancy. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Water and the Quality of Life<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Clean water is essential to all living systems. The rich diversity of life around Friday Harbor is entirely dependent on the water that is available for use in this region.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The continuous movement of water from the surface of the earth into the atmosphere and back again is called the water cycle.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Rain falling on the San Juan Islands soaks into underground aquifers, or flows as runoff into ditches, streams, lakes or wetlands, and into the marine waters of Puget Sound.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Evaporation from surface waters and transpiration from plants returns water to the atmosphere, where it once again accumulates as clouds and eventually falls to earth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A weak&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Convergence_zone\">convergence zone<\/a>&nbsp;can occur between approximately&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Victoria,_British_Columbia\">Victoria, British Columbia<\/a>, and&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Bellingham,_Washington\">Bellingham, Washington<\/a>, over the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/San_Juan_Islands\">San Juan Islands<\/a>, as a result of southwesterly air blowing from the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strait_of_Juan_de_Fuca\">Strait of Juan de Fuca<\/a>&nbsp;meeting northerly air moving southward down the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Strait_of_Georgia\">Strait of Georgia<\/a>.<sup class=\"reference\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.m.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Puget_Sound_Convergence_Zone?t&amp;utm_source=perplexity#cite_note-1\">[1]<\/a>.
