They have been home to native peoples for centuries \u2013 and many of the local waterways were described in the journal of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.historylink.org\/index.cfm?DisplayPage=output.cfm&amp;File_Id=5226\">Wilkes Exploration Expedition<\/a>, which visited this region in the 19<\/span><sup>th<\/sup><span style=\"font-size: 13px;\"> century and named many of the sites (which already had Indian names).\u00a0 When possible, we will compare Wilkes\u2019 descriptions to what we see in 2016. His exploring expedition was called the \u201cEx Ex\u201d for short, and we respectfully use the same term to describe our sailing journey in 2016.
