{"id":40,"date":"2008-03-13T09:38:00","date_gmt":"2008-03-13T09:38:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/~nanook\/future\/?p=40"},"modified":"2008-03-13T09:38:00","modified_gmt":"2008-03-13T09:38:00","slug":"methane-in-earths-mantle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.eskimo.com\/~nanook\/future\/2008\/03\/13\/methane-in-earths-mantle\/","title":{"rendered":"Methane in Earth&#8217;s Mantle"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Click on the title to see <a href=\"http:\/\/www-cmls.llnl.gov\/?url=science_and_technology-chemistry-methane\">an article detailing an experiment showing that hydrocarbons are created abiotically in the Earth&#8217;s mantle<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gasresources.net\/Mafoud-91.htm\">another study which determined that solid hydrocarbons in rocks that originated in the upper mantle were not organic in origin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is <a href=\"http:\/\/www.worldnetdaily.com\/news\/article.asp?ARTICLE_ID=59991\">another study in which isotopic evidence shows that hydrocarbons coming up from hydrothermal vents is not of biological origin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Here is yet another <a href=\"http:\/\/www.eurekalert.org\/features\/doe\/2005-08\/drnl-tsf082205.php\">study showing that the formation of hydrocarbons in the Earth&#8217;s mantle and the existence of huge quantities of hydrocarbons in the mantle is likely<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Industries in control of hydrocarbon extraction are doing a good job of throttling supply to drive the price up through the roof; there is not an actual shortage of the stuff.<\/p>\n<p>We do have a limited supply of is oxygen, so even if we&#8217;ve got infinite hydrocarbon supplies; we do not have infinite oxygen supplies. The atmosphere can not sink an infinite amount of carbon dioxide. Burning hydrocarbons for energy is not sustainable and has very undesirable environmental effects.<\/p>\n<p>But the current oil rape is just greed, and perhaps to a lesser demand, lack of foresight on the part of industry in terms of their failure to anticipate increasing demand from China and India.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Click on the title to see an article detailing an experiment showing that hydrocarbons are created abiotically in the Earth&#8217;s mantle.
