I suggest we start with "Make Them Understand", Roy's first composition
on vinyl, as performed by Mike Sheridan and the Nightriders.

It's actually a really nifty beat number, though Mike Sheridan really
doesn't do it justice. (Sorry Mike, I think you're fab, but you didn't
nail that one!)

I'd also like to hear what splinter groups and individuals my
fellow-list members have actually followed "religiously" (i.e.,
acquired the entire catalogue). I, for one, followed the Move completely
(that's not hard), went back and picked up the Idol Race (originally
owned only the "Birthday Party" album, but now also have the double CD
set), and followed Roy into ELO (first album) and his initial Wizzard
single ("Ball Park Incident") before deciding that there were just too
many lines to follow. Besides, I was losing some interest due to the
missing personnel chemistry that had existed in the early Move and that
was certainly present when Roy and Jeff were "competing geniuses/egos."
This had its parallel in my following of the Beatles. After their split
I sampled some John, Paul and George before deciding that the chemistry
was definitely missing (the magic of those "competing geniuses/ego" was
gone).

What is your experience?

From: Marc Miller

Got it! Last night I went into a record store in the west Village, just
on the off chance that they got the Move box in. The guy had just
unpacked 1 copy, which he was going to take home for himself. Feeling
rather persuasive, I managed to wrest it from his hot little hands into
mine. It's really great. Sound quality on the early stuff through
Shazam is very good. The live stuff sounds great. The "Looking On"
stuff, I fear, is always gonna sound like mud. Probably the way it was
recorded. I do have one gripe - there's no recording info (studios,
dates) and there should be a "personnel by track" listing. For $35. you
really can't go wrong.

I asked a fellow who runs a record store in the UK to try to find the
box set for me. Can anyone tell me who is distributing the box? It's
not someone selling them from the trunk of a car, is it?

Virgin, Our Price and HMV are featuring the box set in a co-promotion
with the Procol set and have both displayed very prominantly.

Well they're supposed to be building a Virgin Records in Miami, but I
suppose the promotion would be over by then. ;)

There was no sticker or anything (about who is distributing is) on the
copy that I got. I bought mine at Rocket Scientist Records on Carmine
St. in NYC, but I'm sure he told me that I got the only copy (although
he would be getting more). I had also tried that mail-order place that
Lynn mentioned (and I'm drawing a complete blank on their name) - but
they said they wouldn't have it for a few weeks. What city do you live
in again???

Subject: The elusive Move box set...

From: Lynn Hoskins

Hi all!

I know you're frustrated in your search for the box set. (I told Euan
that since he knows where to get them, he should buy one for everybody.
Can you believe he's ignoring my e-mails? ;-)

Rob is working with the record company to try and speed up distribution
to the U.S. It's a slow process, but it WILL happen. The set will
probably retail in the U.S. for $33-35. (Collector's Choice online says
they'll have them for $34.95 in 3-4 weeks.)

There is a chance something can be worked out with the record company so
that members of this list can get a special deal. Rob needs to get an
idea of how many of you are interested so he can give them an
approximate number.

Please e-mail me privately if you definitely want the box set. And,
please let me know what country you're in.

Thanks much!

Subject: Don't Make My Baby Blue

From: Gallandro

Did they fix "Don't make my baby blue"? Not to sound like a broken
record, but that would be the major incentive for me to purchase it.
If that track is still screwed up, I may as well stick with my
Repertoire CDs.

Gosh, Gallandro... what about all the wonderful rare, alternate versions
and outtakes that are ONLY available in this box set? Not to mention
the previously unreleased "Vote For Me" and all the cool singles like
"Omnibus"?

If a "fixed" version of "Don't Make My Baby Blue" is the only thing that
interests you, then, you're right, you shouldn't get the box set.

We'll let you know what you're missing. ;-)

From: Lynn Hoskins

Boy, this is almost like the Tickle Me Elmo craze that swept through
the U.S. last Christmas!

So that we have a little quality control here on the list, let's wait
till we know for SURE that a U.S. vendor has the box set before posting
the info. If you're holding the CDs in your hand, then it's probably
safe to post. :)

If you think you have a good lead, feel free to e-mail me and I'll try
to get it confirmed.

Like I said, a U.S. distribution plan is in the works. And, Rob is
moving quickly on trying to set up a special deal for Move list
subscribers. If everyone can be just a little patient (I know...we're
talking about THE MOVE here!) Rob should have more information for you
in a few days.

One way or another, the box set will be available to all very soon.
(And then we can all tell Gallandro how great it is. ;)

Subject: "The Best Of The Move" A&M CD3625

From: Christopher Dolmetsch

Hi All!

I'm now listening to the rare US disc "The Best Of The Move"
A&M CD3625, a reissue of the "Best Of..." vinyl two record album.
This is a very strange mix indeed: some tracks from The Move (first album)
are stereo, others are not. "Lemon Tree" has a stereo instrumental
bridge in the middle and mono where the vocals are heard. Some tracks
have narrow stereo separation, and some have wide ("Useless Information"
"Flowers In The Rain"). What do you think accounts for this anomaly? I
can't recall my Regal Zonophone album version being this way...in fact
my "stereo" RZ copy is mostly MONO, despite the claim to the contrary.
Does anyone else out there have similar mixes on other reissues of The
Move?

Dr.D.

I vote for "Zing Went The Strings" for discussion. You've gotta hear
the original Coasters' version of this to appreciate what the Move
accomplished here, folks!

Dr. D, re:

The Coasters did not do the original version. Zing...was written in
1935, and was featured that year in a film (the name of which esacpes me
now...). The Move's arrangement, however, is pretty close to the
Coasters version.

This song has been recorded by SO many artists... Judy Garland, Frank
Sinatra, The Gerry Mulligan Band, The Trammps (!)

I laugh everytime I hear Roy's version. It would fit right in on a
Roger Ruskin Spear (of Bonzo Dog Band fame) album.

"Tubas in the moonlight...." :-)

It was, of course, Bev doing the vocal on this one.

Yeah, if you tried to tell me that was Roy singing, I'd be scared! :)
"Bullfrog" Bevan adds that "special something" to Ben Crawley Steel
Company, too.

I'm just curious... does Bev's speaking voice sound anything like his
singing voice?

No, not really. He's got a very good radio voice, though he tries to make
his Brummie accent sound very posh. :-)

You haven't seen the video of the Brummie Rock Family trees, then?

You should find someone to make a copy for you! :-) It's excellent.
