Around the time that "Blackberry Way" was released (January 1969), Trevor decided to leave the Move to join another Birmingham band, the Uglys. Steve Gibbons and, for a time, Dave Pegg, were in the Uglys. A few months after Trevor joined the band, Denny Laine also joined. He had left the Moody Blues after their hit, "Go Now," formed the Electric String Orchestra (similar to ELO) and tried to make a go of it solo. With Laine in the band, the Uglys changed their name to Balls. They did a few shows and then broke up. But, a year later, Laine and Burton "re-formed" Balls along with drummer Alan White and recorded their only single, "Fight For My Country." This is truly a significant day in music history (although precious few self-proclaimed "music historians" would recognize that!) - as soon as I got Lynn's e-mail, I fired up the iPod and listened to the live tracks on Disk 2 of "First Light - ELO". Goodness Gracious, Great Balls o' Fire!!! Aye, that be a monster of a track, even with out-of-tune cellos! (perhaps because of them ... ;-) ). Happy anniversary "Lynnie and Woodsie" ... I'll be at that show. What's the Innsbrook Pavillion like? They are also playing two days before that in Fairfax. I think this topic has enough legs to propel us into future discussions. Perhaps a fun idea would be to tack the following question on to the Song of the Week posts: "Which artist/group would you like to hear covering this song?", or some such statement. What do you think? I think it's cool, but I've had some nutty ideas in the past that made sense only to me...:-) Mike Cross Rochester, NY NP: Evil Woman (from the Lynne Me Your Ears tribute) ********** Subject: In search of The Idle Race - "Back To The Story" Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 16:26:32 -0700 From: "Stephen M.H. I think Ace UK was once showing interest in reissuing the CD, but I don't know the status of that. I remember buying it when it came out, new, and was perturbed at the $35 price tag for buying an import (I live in San Francisco). Now I'd bought a half dozen at that price! ********** Subject: Re: In search of The Idle Race - "Back To The Story" Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 23:58:05 -0700 From: Mark Minsky Stephen M.H. As much as I would like to get it, that price is too steep for me. I will just have to hope that it will be re-released someday at a more reasonable price. What do you think of "Back To The Story" Stephen? Is it pretty good? How would you rate it? If anyone else out there has it, I would be interested in your opinions as well. ********** Subject: Re: In search of The Idle Race - "Back To The Story" Date: Fri, 19 Apr 2002 23:59:05 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins Mark Minsky wrote: >Thanks for the info Stephen. Hi Mark, If you check the Face the Music Web site (http://www.ftmusic.com) you'll see that an Idle Race "Box Set Anthology" is in the works. This box will include the "Back To The Story" CD. The release date hasn't been set yet, but it looks like there's hope for those who never got the limited edition "Back To The Story." ********** Subject: Re: In search of The Idle Race - "Back To The Story" Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 16:24:47 -0700 From: "Tyler C.Sherman" If they're doing a box set of Idle Race they certainly can do one on Roy...the sooner the better! What we have here is all three albums (the first two with Jeff Lynne only) plus all the singles not on the albums, everything in fact. Although I'm not really a fan of the third album, the remainder is essential. I only ever saw the set the once and never again, I'm just glad I got it when I did. If anyones interested I'll get a rather cool picture of the group uploaded on my server. :-) Jim Mac ********** Subject: Re: In search of The Idle Race - "Back To The Story" Date: Sat, 20 Apr 2002 16:25:06 -0700 From: "Rich Lamphear" I have "Back to the Story" and I think it's fabulous, at least up until it gets to the third Idle Race LP, after Jeff left. It never amused me at the time, but when I was in my late teens we used to gather at a friends house every Friday, as his mum went out. We all got to bring an album and get our turn to play. With the exception of me actually, a lot of the time - the bastards used to hide my album (they all hated Roy), so that they wouldn't have Brew, Eddy, Shazam or whatever foisted on their delicate ears. They particularly despised Get On Down Home, which meant that I brought Mustard often and played the drum solo at full blast, whenever I could find out where they'd hidden the album. >Who are some of your other favorite artists/bands? Harold Montgomery, 51, Hopland, California (99 miles North of San Francisco), retired bank receptionist. Q) How long have you been a Move and/or Roy Wood fan? Since "Flowers in The Rain" was released! Q) What was your first Move related experience? After hearing "FITR" I went to every import shop back then to buy the first Lp and fell in love with Move music. Living in England 1973-75 I got to catch Carl in a caberet solo show. Also that was a big era for Wizzardmania, which I got to experience first hand. Q) Tell us about your top 5 favorite Move related tracks. In no particular order: Brontasaurus, Beautiful Daughter, Do Ya, Flowers In The Rain, Fire Brigade. Q) What's your favorite Move related album, and why? Lets see...Move related. Not the Move...well blyme I guess its "Boulders"!!! Q) What topics would you like to see discussed on this list? All Move and exMove chatter. More releases. Q) If you've seen the Move or any member of the Move in concert, tell us about that show. I was in London working for MPL at Soho Square (Mail room) and saw Carl Wayne do a solo show. It was mostly material from the first Lp and for the life of me I can't remember if he included any Move songs. I just remember beging "kinda" shocked to here him sing these styles of songs as I only knew him as the singer for the Move. Apparently he had a song out that was used as the title song for a TV show back then. Anyway I have always been a fan of the Walker Brothers too so the style of music wasnt as painful to me as say it would be to hard core Roy Wood fans. I loved the show and ran out and bought the solo Lp. Q) Tell us about an amusing or interesting situation that has happened as a result of you being a Move/Roy Wood fan. Sorry...I can't think of anything. Q) Who are some of your other favorite artists/bands? Beatles, Move/ELO, Yardbirds (& related bands), Doors, T-Rex, Badfinger, Small Faces, Byrds (1965-68), Rolling Stones (Brian Jones era ONLY), Buffalo Springfield, Cher, Jimi Hendrix Experence, Cream, Jefferson Airplane/Grace Slick and most 60's british pop music. Q) Which Move related song do you wish one of your favorite bands would cover? I do NOT have any favorite American bands currently other than CS&N and I can't imagine them doing a Move song. Q) What is the one burning question that you have never had answered in relation to Move/Roy Wood history or music? Are there any pictures of the Move playing in San Francisco in existence??? Q) Are you having trouble finding any Move related music on CD? Ummmmm yes! But God sent Tyler to me and he has been a BIG help to my collection. ********** Subject: Re: Tell us the news about yourself...
