Date: Mon, 12 Aug 2002 13:15:09 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins Topic Of The Week: The Move...solo? What sort of solo album do you think each member of The Move might release now? Based on the individual characters and the work they've previously done, what music do you think they're capable of coming up with on their own? Or would you like to see collaborations between any of the members? ********** Subject: Re: The Move...solo? Date: Tue, 13 Aug 2002 15:20:56 -0700 From: "Doyle, Joe" As with all of us, I would imagine, I would dearly love to see *any* new album from Roy. I wouldn't even speculate what it would turn out as, but it would be nice to see the Army finally get a studio album under their belts. After so long on the road, their dedication alone, never mind their obvious talent deserves it IMHO (haven't they lasted longer than any of Roy's other bands, whilst he was still with the band?). Collaboration, did you say collaboration?! - an album co-produced by Roy and Jeff would be a dream come true for me. I rate them as highly as Lennon and McCartney as a pair and superior on their own. As for content and style, well again I would leave it to them, who could have predicted that they would come up with a song like If You Can't Get What You Want? Pure skiffle, but brilliant all the same. Having said that, it would be nice to see them cover all of the styles they've done so in the past, pretty much as Jeff did with Zoom. Whilst we're dreaming, I'd like to see them use Wizzard as the backing band (iteration with Bill Hunt and Hugh McDowell), probably the best collection of musicians ever put together in one band for me - and why not throw Carl into the mix. Then you'd have three very strong vocal talents that could share some of the duties much in the way that the original Move did so superbly, and just imagine the harmonies - they could make the harmonies in Message From The Country and No Time sound pale in comparison. As for lead roadie and constant drinking companion? Well I do have a family and a job, but I could be bought (for half a pint of bitter.... :) ********** Subject: Re: The Move...solo? Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 18:07:33 -0700 From: Richard Messum Wow, fascinating topic. I think that Roy Wood and Carl Wayne should definitely team up again, there was an unbeatable synergy there and they could show tha Gallaghers (Liam & Noel -- not Rory and Donal!) how it's done. Bev Bevan will make percussion-driven minimalist albums with Steve Reich and perform as a member of Laurie Anderson's touring band. Ace will co-host (along with Marianne Faithful) a cable-television game show, called "Heartbreakers." Jeff Lynne will continue to re-invent the Beatles and sell very few albums, but make a fortune touring with Ringo, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty & Robbie Williams in The Traveling Wilburys Mk II. And Trevor will join The Who and revitalise them, put them back in the Top 40 with his versions of "I love New York" and "Baba O'Roywood." FWIW. ********** Subject: Definitive 'Who Sang What'? Date: Mon, 12 Aug 2002 19:42:09 -0700 From: Brian Nasseri Just wondering if there is a definitive listing out there of who-sang-what-parts on each Move song? Has anyone tried compiling one? I know there was a small breakdown for the "Looking On" album (or was it "Message From the Country"?) where they would name the song and then clearly list "Lead Singer: Carl Wayne" etc.. on the line-up info of the Move discography on roywood.co.uk, but the other album info isn't that specific. ********** Subject: Recent fan Date: Mon, 12 Aug 2002 19:42:44 -0700 From: "kwork" My name is Travis Butler and I am fairly recent to the list. I have been a fan of ELO for years and have recently branched in to the other projects including the Move. I would appreciate it if someone could tell me if I am missing any vital Move material available on cd. I have the following titles. The Move (with I think nineteen or so bonus tracks) Shazam! (cd also containing the nine track version of Something Else) Looking On (ten bonus tracks) Message from the Country California Man I'm hoping to see a remastered Message with the surrounding singles included. If I spelled anything wrong, I'm sorry but I am blind and I can't see the covers for verification. Thanks in advance. ********** Subject: Bob Brady performs in Edinburgh August 20-31 Date: Tue, 20 Aug 2002 03:08:26 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins Wizzard vocalist and piano man Bob Brady will be performing at Fingers Piano Bar in Edinburgh (Scotland), 11pm-5am, August 20-31. Fingers is located at 61a Frederick Street. Phone: 0131-225-3026. Bob wrote and sang the Wizzard B-side "Can't Help My Feelings." And that's Bob's wonderful piano work on "Main Street" and "French Perfume." (To name just a couple of his credits...) I'm working on getting additional information about his set. If anyone on the list has a chance to go see him, it would be great if you'd post a review. ********** Subject: Looking for Grunt Futtock Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 13:11:29 -0700 From: "George Mackenzie" Can anyone HELP! I'm looking for a copy of Grunt Futtock "Rock n roll christain" will pay for any expenses needed for me to receive this item. Tape, md, vinyl or cd I don't care what format as long as I get it. Many thanks. ********** Subject: Recommended Repertoire CD's Date: Mon, 12 Aug 2002 18:26:27 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins Rob Caiger recommended: >Wizzard - Singles A's & B's REP 4762-WY >Roy Wood - Exotic Mixture Best Of Singles A's & B's REP 4744-WR >The Move - Hits & Rarities Singles A's & B's REP 4665-WR All three of these are excellent (lovely packaging) and I've been asking Rob whether they can be made available via the Face The Music Shop. He's asked me to go out to the list and ask what the interest level would be. Perhaps list members can drop me a quick private e-mail letting me know which of these you'd be interested in buying from FTM. I've been listening to "The Move - Hits & Rarities Singles A's & B's" quite a bit lately and find the sound quality to be amazingly clear. (While it wasn't remastered from the original tapes, it was digitally remastered from tape copies, and Repertoire has done an outstanding job.) Might have to give "Exotic Mixture" a spin this evening... Maybe some of you can share your thoughts on these releases for those who don't have them. (Yet. ;) Below are the track listings. (Yet. ;) ... Well, since you asked ... When the Repertoire releases came out a couple of years ago I dumped all the previous Woody collections I had (with the exception of the EMI collections) because these were very well done with great sound quality. Until Rob gets the definitive masters done these will do quite nicely: "THE MOVE - Hits & Rarities Singles A's & B's" (REP 4665-WR) 2CD Pretty much everything released as a single on Deram, Regal Zonophone, Fly, and Harvest during the Move's lifespan ('66 - '72). Includes some rarities such as "Vote For Me" and "Something (Italian Version)". It also contains the entire original "Something Else By The Move" live EP which is essential for any Move fan to have and play constantly. If you never bought a Move CD before (what are you doing on this list?), this would be the first one to buy. "ROY WOOD - Exotic Mixture Best Of Singles A's & B's" (REP 4744-WR) 2CD Fairly comprehensive overview of Roy's solo singles, but not definitive. However, it's about as close as you can come presently to getting all of the singles Roy released as a solo artist between '72 and '87. Again they did an excellent job on the sound quality - they just screwed up on some of the names of the songs (Bengal Jim?), and the original version had two songs that were simply the WRONG songs from what was listed on the cover. Thanks to the MOVE LIST, this has since been corrected (who said we don't have power?). "WIZZARD - Singles A's & B's" (REP 4762-WY) Essential collection for understanding how stylistically diverse and musically accomplished Wizzard was/is. Has the entire version of "The Carlsberg Special", as well as the Pete Frame-conjured single that never was, "You Got Me Runnin'". I don't think it's possible to overstate just how great the music on this CD is, and it only tells HALF the Wizzard story. You need to get "Wizzard Brew", "Introducing Eddy and the Falcons", and "Main Street" to complete the picture - this disk is just as essential as those. As great as these three CD sets are, just imagine what we have to look forward to if even HALF of what Rob is working on with Woody's back catalogue comes to fruition. Oh yeah ... JD San Jose, CA ********** Subject: Re: Recommended Repertoire CD's Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 02:32:37 -0700 From: "chris roberts" Lynn helpfully listed the tracks to a few comps. including: "WIZZARD - Singles A's & B's" (REP 4762-WY) I was caught by 'I Can't Help My Feelings (German single edit)'. How does this differ from the UK version that we are more familiar with - does it go into the instrumental 'Saxamaniacs' still? If not (as I suspect might be the case), how does this German version end? Also JD commented that the 'entire version of "The Carlsberg Special"' is also included. Does this mean the seven second silence after the opening chords. I just love the wait before the blast of the main tune thunders in! If this is the case I'll search out this CD for that magical seven seconds alone. Please confirm my hopes JD or others. :O) Wizzards Chris ********** Subject: Re: Recommended Repertoire CD's Date: Wed, 14 Aug 2002 13:18:45 -0700 From: John DeSilva Chris Roberts wrote: > Also JD commented that the 'entire version of "The Carlsberg Special"' > is also included. You get the little intro piece on the harpsichord, then the 7 seconds, then the main theme roars in. The only other collection I've found that has "The Carlsberg Special" is the EMI 'Roy Wood - Through The Years' comp, which is good EXCEPT for the omitted opening intro to TCS. I can't see any other differences but others may know better :) ...and does anyone know why 'This is the Story of My Love' fades early on this compilation? Is it just for timing reasons? ********** Subject: "This Is The Story of My Love" fade out Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 18:09:15 -0700 From: "Joseph Davolt" Paul wrote: >...and does anyone know why 'This is the Story of My Love' fades early >on this compilation? Is it just for timing reasons? Actually, this is because the original single faded early. This is another thing I remember someone asking about once, why none of the compilations have the 'single' version of TITSOMYL (Baby) (lol)...well, this one does. This is, with no exception the ONLY Wizzard comp you need. Between Wizzard Brew, Eddy & The Falcons, Main Street, and this, you have it all. This has every Wizzard single, as it should be (edited TITS, full CS, German edit CHMF), in great sound, with posh packaging (nice carboard case). And yes, the only difference between the two "Can't Help My Feelings" on it is that the 'German single edit' fades earlier. "Exotic Mixture" is also essential. All Woody solo singles are on it except four A-Sides and 3 B-Sides, plus some 12-inch remixes. None of those are available on any other CD, except one of the A-sides, "Down To Zero" (which is on some EMI comp). The only gripe with these CD's is that they read "CAN'T HELP ME FEELINGS" and "BENGAL JIM". Also, the early pressings (which is what I have :-( ), plays "You Sure Got It Now" where "Mustard" should be (both tracks are of course on "Mustard") and "Nature Boy" (from Annie Haslam's Roy-produced 'Annie In Wonderland' album) in place of "Inside My Life" (also from 'Annie in Wonderland'). As far as I can tell, Roy doesn't actually play on "Nature Boy", but I think he plays (maybe even duets?) on "Inside My Life", which was also the B-Side of the "Roy Wood & Annie Haslam" 45 "I Never Believed In Love", which explains the inclusion of any Haslam tracks. I've not heard "Inside My Life"...can someone tell me wether Roy sings or plays on it? ********** Subject: Re: "This Is The Story of My Love" fade out Date: Thu, 15 Aug 2002 18:08:25 -0700 From: "chris roberts" Paul cleared up my Saxmaniacs question (thanks) and then raised: >...and does anyone know why 'This is the Story of My Love' fades >early on this compilation? Is it just for timing reasons? Yes, I'd like to know that too - it always bugs me when beloved tracks do that!! While we are on the subject, what rights does the original artist / writer have over such treatment of their material? I can't think that an author would stand for changes to the end of a book being made by someone else after an initial release. Nor would a painter go a bundle on having a painting trimmed down because it was too big for a gallery wall. I can just picture the scene: "My dear Piccaso, its a lovely piece of work, really it is...but it's a tad to large for this nice frame I got here. Hack a bit off the left hand side with these scissors would you...there's a good chap"!!!!! Maybe it's also a "northern" thing as well! ********** Subject: Re: The meaning of Big Girl's Blouse Date: Sun, 18 Aug 2002 11:50:28 -0700 From: "chris roberts" Richard asked of the British phrase of "big girl's blouse": >What's it mean? It's one from the late 70's -early 80's I think. It was used as a put-down to any body (but male usually) who was making a fuss about something rather trivial. It also had homophobic connotations from when it was fashionably okay to make fun of gay men. I think it was first coined on stage in a stand-up routine by someone like comedian Les Dawson (rather brash salt-of-the-earth style). It might even have been on of Larry Grayson's catch phrases (who for those that don't know had a very camp delivery and would make fun of himself on stage but probably to the detriment of 'seriously camp folks' - but you'd have to ask them about that). There two ways of hearing the phrase and the word 'Big' in particular. Firstly 'Big' as an emphasis for the phrase itself. And secondly 'Big' as in the size of the said girl's chest. The latter is most likely the intended inflection given the roots of the phrase on the British variety stage where the bosom has as much comic mileage as almost any other subject. Should you wish to impress you friends - the 'correct' use of the line is, in context with the above: "Oh for heaven's sake! You are just being a Big Girl's Blouse!" I don't wish to be too gushing here but it warms the heart to know that so much good work is being done on this front and the continual references to going back to Roy for his views and wishes is 'music' its self. The way Roy has been 'shafted' over the years is a well documented serial crime and its so warming to know that, all be it very late in the day, 'the right thing' is being done at last. Well done again Rob and cohorts - Roy's work appears to be in safe hands finally. Do ya, do ya, wanna know why? Lotsa pleasant but surprising stuff, especially in March! Very much worth the wait, something I'm sure many fans will feel they were born to buy ;0)! Finally got around to ordering some more stuff from FTM store (Carl Wayne & ELO U.C.) but couldn't bare to cut out the order form on the the glossy new bulletin, so had to photocopy it. Will make the effort to get Orchestra and Kelly Groucutt CDs next month (there's some autographed copies for sale of other CDs I already have, gotta debate with myself about ordering those babies). Good job on the US FTM Bulletin, Rob. Heck, good job on everything! I wish I could have gone both days, but family obligations kept me home today (Sunday). I've gone to a few of these in years past and they've all been loads of fun. On Saturday there were about 20 people there, about half from the more or less local area and the other half traveling from further afield. I brought along with me the VHS Glam Rock tape which has videos of Ballpark Incident and I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday. Things were so busy, though, that this didn't get put into a player, so maybe next time. I also brought along LPs of On the Road Again, Eddy and the Falcons, Super Active Wizzo, Wizzard (Harvest collection), and Move Greatest Vol. 1 (Pickwick). I listened to the Mustard CD on the ride up and also brought along my Starting up and Main Street CDs. I also brought my "The Big Night" t-shirt that I bought back in the late 70s at a concert in New Haven. I think that was the first indoor concert I ever went to. Many other also brought collections of ELO/Move/Wizzard/... material and Steve had the house decorated as an ELO museum. There were loads of articles and clippings and memorabilia, the Discovery guy stand-up and much more. He says the house doesn't always look like that :) I saw many music videos from Time and Secret Messages and Armchair Theatre along with some of the Storytellers video and the Zoom DVD. I heard loads of things. Steve played some of a Crumbacher-Duke album which has ELO-song soundalikes and we guessed which song sounded most like the one that was playing. One highlight after dinner was the sing-along. Steve and some other played guitar and we attempted to sing ELO songs. That's about it for now. A big thanks to Steve and Lauren and I look forward to another gathering.
