Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 20:40:46 -0700 From: kakman1 Roy Wood: aside from any EMI or other label compiliations/tributes/ whathaveyou, I would imagine two album releases from Roy in 2003, a studio release (the salsa flavoured album) and a live release from his recent shows in NYC at VU. If that could be moved up to Xmastime 2002, even better! Probably a couple of enhanced CD releases as singles, too, again, one in the new salsa vein and the other from a recent live performance. Carl Wayne: A new Hollies album with Carl on lead vocals, if his new found radio career doesn't get in the way! Bev Bevan: Tough call. Even Bev admits his singing prowess is not even up to Ringo Starr's standards (though he did an admirable job umpteen years ago on Ben Crawley Steel Co. and back up vocals on ELO and Move). More radio and TV I say from Bev and maybe a guest visit to "The Osbournes". Of course, he is a great drummer, and a good songwriter now (at the helm of ELO Pt II) so he could continue to make contributions to another future The Orchestra release or even other Move members releases'. Trevor Burton: haven't heard any of recent release yet, but he is one of the great journeyman guitarists and singers from Brum School of Rock. A new future collaboration between him, Carl and Bev might be very powerful and not some namby pamby trip down memory lane, as some tired and lazy music columnists might mention. Rick Price: Don't see anything yet from him, but I'm sure he's working on it. Jeff Lynne & Richard Tandy: Another ELO studio release with the full band from Storytellers and "Zoom Tour". Probably a stronger, harder rocking sound. Hopefully a tour geared towards smaller venues and reasonable ticket prices. Ace Kefford: Since his re-emergence, as of late, I don't see anything musically coming up, but he may become accidently a new media star in Britain, first by giving candid interviews of his attempts to deal with fame, fortune, mental illness and other hardships. Perhaps raw stand up comedy? There may be a second act yet in Ace Kefford's public life. You seem to be doing fine...I have questions regarding stereo versus mono mixes, any variations of mixes and versions on 7" versions, foreign or promo releases (different versions, longer fades, longer intros.) I'm a record collector nerd at heart! > If you've seen the Move or any member of the Move in concert, tell us > about that show. ELO played the smaller 'concert hall' in Tucson where I grew up, at least three times...dug them pre "El Dorado" then they lost it for me. I remember how great of a drummer Bev was at those shows. My friend and kept comparing his timing and simplicity (in a complimentarily way) to Ringo. > Who are some of your other favorite artists/bands? Serge Gainsbourg, Arthur Lyman, Frank Sinatra, Jimi Hendrix, Sex Pistols, Ramones, The Dogs, The White Stripes, Alice Cooper, The Dead Boys, Martin Denny, Louis Prima, Dean Martin, The Beatles, The Pretty Things, Paul Revere & The Raiders, most all Masque era LA punk bands, all the awesome worldwide regional '60s garage/early psych and '70s punk bands you can hear on legit and boot comps from "Nuggets" to "Killed By Death." Blue Oyster Cult, The Humpers, The Hives, Blue Cheer....and that's just scratching the surface...so much great music out there! > What is the one burning question that you have never had answered > in relation to Move/Roy Wood history or music? I mostly look for vinyl though I have a copy of the first album with the single tracks....listen to it in the car all the time! Looking foward to some fun! ALSO....I have a test pressing, LP sides one and two of the second LP from the A&M Best Of The Move package, with a Monarch Test Pressing label, and handwriting that says "Move" on the label....any fanatics want to trade anything for this? I sure would love a clean original copy of the first Move album among other things....thought I'd offer it up for a trade before putting it up for auction. "What was your first Move related experience?" >Don't remember, I was very stoned all the time back then! Probably >hearing "Brontosaurus" on the FM radio... I would imagine a lot of Move fans in the UK cannot understand why so many of us in the U.S. (and other musically deprived countries) were so late in catching on. The first I'd heard of The Move was when "No Answer" came out and I rushed to my local record store to buy it. The owner of the store said, "Have you heard The Move?" "No, why?" "Oh, you have to hear The Move." "Which album do you recommend?" "Sorry, I wish we had an album to sell you." And so that's how it went each time I bought a new ELO album. Since Los Angeles radio wasn't exactly fawning over The Move, I remained uninitiated. When "A New World Record" came out I was informed that "The Move's version of Do Ya is even better..." Yeah, if only I could have heard it! It wasn't until Cheap Trick covered "California Man" that I became more aware of The Move and some guy named "Roy Wood" who I was told had left ELO under "mysterious circumstances." When I finally did hear my first Move song, I was a bit ticked off, to be honest. It was so profoundly wonderful ("Message From The Country" was my first Move listening experience) that I felt a sense of loss. I could have been listening to The Move, not to mention Roy's vast collection of songs and styles, for all those years... Ah well, better late than never. Anyway, Lee, when I read in your intro piece that it was the first ELO album that sucked you in, it reminded me of how I came to be a Move fan. And record collector nerds are always welcome here. Ask away. ********** Subject: Re: Midnight Records / Roy at the VU pre-orders Date: Fri, 23 Aug 2002 03:52:22 -0700 From: kakman1m I remember some seller on ebay selling videos of the show, complete with track listings, one week after the show at VU. I do not know if the auction ever got cancelled or pulled by ebay officials. As much as I regretted (gnash gnash moan groan whoa is me!) not being in attendence, but I did not succumb to temptation and did not bid on the auction. Some day, I'll see Roy perform live. When "Blackberry Way" came on, i decided to try to find its lyrics (some of which have baffled me for 30-odd years) and typed "Blackberry+way" into Google. The very first thing that came up was a karaoke version of the song (immediately solving a thirty year mystery) (love that Google!), and this linked me to http://www.cherryblossomclinic.freeserve.co.uk/ I've never seen any references to this site on this list before. Does everyone know about it but me? It's a fan site, it's loaded with photographs and sheet music and interviews (not just with Woody but also with a couple of members of ELO), an interactive game or two, etc. etc. It's well worth a look! ********** Subject: Re: Woody web site Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 22:12:12 -0700 From: John DeSilva Richard: First of all, I love Google as well - best damn search engine out there! In fact, I have ordered a few of their records and have always been disapointed in the quality, including one called "The Genius of Jeff Lynne". For all the bitching about bootlegs ripping off the artists, I am surprised anyone on the list would bother ordering from them. Please Roy, release the live cd that you recorded a couple of years ago! Drew Jacobs Latham, NY ********** Subject: Re: Midnight Records and Tendolar Roy Bootleg Date: Sun, 25 Aug 2002 20:24:04 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins Drew, I know what you mean about Tendolar. Sheesh, the quality of their stuff is just dreadful. I now avoid them at all cost. The Roy at the VU boot is apparently out on the Laughing Weasel bootleg label. Has anyone heard of them, or were they invented just for this CD? A couple people wrote asking why I dropped a Frank Zappa reference in my recent post about this Village Underground boot. I know there are some huge Zappa fans on the list who may be able to provide more detail, but I'll give you the short story... Zappa came out with a series of releases called Beat The Boots. He got hold of some boots, repackaged them, and sold them at discount prices. He turned the whole bootlegging concept right on its head by "bootlegging the bootlegs." Don't be in a rush to plop down $19.95 for this boot. Hold off for a couple weeks. ********** Subject: Why should the ELO List have all the fun? Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 22:07:52 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins There's a rather lively debate happening on the ELO List that's actually quite apropos for the Move List. I've decided to cross-post the Move-relevant postings to this list so that you can discuss some of the juicy topics the ELO List has been having a field day with. ********** Subject: ELO2 and MFTC remasters Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 22:08:14 -0700 From: "BrendanJ Doherty" [Cross-posted from the ELO List] I have just been looking at the Move Online website and was astonished to see that the Message from the Country remaster, originally scheduled for July along with the ELO 2 remaster then rescheduled for september, has now been put back 'til 2003. With the lack of 'news' from the ftm website I guess this means that the ELO 2 remaster has also been put off. The reason given is the discovery of more 'previously thought lost' tapes. Just how much bonus tracks do we need anyway? Couldn't these have been saved for other special releases? I would have been happy with the original version, i.e. that which was planned for release next month. Just how much more of this can and should we take? Either give us a definite date to expect them or tell us the truth if they have been cancelled or something. No more pussyfooting around please! ********** Subject: Re: ELO2 and MFTC remasters Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 22:08:27 -0700 From: Rob Caiger [Cross-posted from the ELO List] Brendan writes: > The reason given is the discovery of more 'previously thought lost' > tapes. Just how much bonus tracks do we need anyway? You tell me. My view has always been to get as much relevant, quality bonus material - if it exists - onto a release as I can. If people want less, or feel I should follow what many of the recent Warner Bros. remasters have done and just release the album as originally issued, then I'd be interested to hear feedback. > Couldn't these have been saved for other special releases? It's taken 30 years to get this far with the album! Don't assume there's a willingness to invest in any "other special releases". We are dealing with the music industry here, after all. Many albums deserve a remastered - or even a first - CD release simply because they are an outstanding piece of work. Doesn't mean we'll get it. It's especially difficult trying to justify release for albums that never recouped their original advances. From purely a balance sheet perspective, why should record companies provide even more funding for (mostly obscure) albums that will almost certainly only sell to a niche or limited market? If there were any justice in the (music business) world, many long-neglected but important artists would be celebrated with deluxe boxsets and their catalogue would be available worldwide. I mean, look how well the industry has looked after Roy Wood's recorded career and legacy.... > I would have been happy with the original version, i.e. that which > was planned for release next month. Ultimately, the artists wishes are respected first. That's one of the main reasons I do what I do - and encouragingly, EMI support that. Message could have come out in September, I could have been paid on it's release for the work I've done and FTM could have begun selling it, earning income. Unfortunately - or fortunately - I don't do these things from a financial point of view. My first thought on finding the last piece of lost session tape (yes, it was really lost) was - stop everything! Jeff and Roy have got to hear this! If superior and additional tapes are found, then they have to be assessed by the artists involved. By the time that was completed, the slot for effective promotion to support a September - or even an October - release had passed. I'm not losing this important album amongst the Christmas schedules so 2003 it is. Also, if a situation changes concerning an artists recorded legacy, then other promotional and marketing strategies may become available that ultimately benefit the artist to even greater extent. Message could soon fit into this catagory and we'll know more over the coming months. But I can ensure everyone that if a release that I'm involved in has been delayed, it is for the best and most positive reasons. > Just how much more of this can and should we take? Well, I could have told you about the 4 years worth of research involved in assembling this particular album prior to any announcement. Hey, things change - with the internet, you get instant feedback immediately. In the old days, you were lucky to get advance news in the music press on a weekly basis. I assumed the list would enjoy news before everyone else, especially before it's "officially" published. Looks like I'm wrong, but elsewhere, I'm critiscised for not providing news... Hmmm. > Either give us a definite date to expect them or tell us the truth if > they have been cancelled or something. Ok, it's really a certain Something...... Rob ********** Subject: ELO & Move CD reissues Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 22:11:54 -0700 From: Philip Cohen [Cross-posted from the ELO List] I think it's about time for Rob Caiger to relinquish his job as compiler of EMI's ELO & Move CD reissues, and hand these projects over to one of EMI's staff compilers for completion. After two years of hyping these releases, Rob is still unable to complete them. As for "The Move-A Message From The Country", all the released EMI/Harvest tracks already appeared on the U.S. CD "Great Move"(which was remastered from original 2-track mixdown master tapes at Abbey Road Studios). As for the one BBC track that Rob intended to use,if it was broadcast,it will inevitably appear on bootleg some day(if it hasn't already)....which leaves two EMI/Harvest alternate takes, and Rob will take the next 3 or 4 years to bring them to the marketplace(if he ever does!).The world will live without them.Go back to being a fanzine publisher, and leave the CD compiling to full-time CD compilers. None of us are getting any younger. Those of us who were in our mid teens when these albums were orginally released are now in our mid-40's.What about releasing this stuff while we're all still here on this planet? Rob Caiger's credibility(as a CD compiler) is defunct. ********** Subject: My orders are to sit here & watch the world go by Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 22:09:03 -0700 From: Plastic Ono Dream [Cross-posted from the ELO List] i think everyone who is calling for "rob caiger" to be led before a firing squad should stop whining & concentrate on some other past time activity. as "rob" just said in his last post(as others have posted, including me, the biggest whining crybaby of them all !)--- what record company is gonna invest a penny in something like "message from the country" by "the move"? are they a worldwide household name? what kind of money are they gonna make after paying for manufacturing & distribution? who bought the "cheap trick" & "blue oyster cult" remasters? not enough people worldwide, because the rest of their remastered catalogues never came out! just like "elo"! i can imagine what "rob" has to go through just explaining who "the move" were, especially in america! can you imagine? it would make a great "monty python" skit. oh yeah, let's put "rob" in the stocks, & let some corporate-yuppie-greasy -ponytail-miami vice-5 o'clock shadow-dude put out a schlocko release like the current edition of "a new world record", which i either gave away or threw away, it sounded so friggin' bad! same with the overpriced "gold edition" of "face the music", it's horrible! i'm 46, & if it takes til i'm 146 to get a great sounding "message from the country", yes with bonus tracks, & yes with hidden tracks, if that's what someone like the great engineer "peter mew" wants (he worked with "george martin" & the friggin' "beatles" fer chrissakes)...it's worth the wait! it's not for us the consumers to decide anyway! if anything the only mistake that "rob caiger" made was giving us all the progress he was making as he was finding all this stuff. probably because as a fan himself, he wanted to share it with other fans. however the "i need instant satisfaction" club can't wait another month or 2 for something they didn't know existed 5 years ago! does this make sense? i need a salad! ********** Subject: The People Throwing Pennies in Rob Caiger's Soup Date: Sat, 24 Aug 2002 22:09:08 -0700 From: Joe Ramsey Philip Cohen wrote: >I think it's about time for Rob Caiger to relinquish his job as compiler >of EMI's ELO & Move CD reissues Job? Besides, I'm not even sure Rob gets paid for it... maybe his recompense is the satisfaction he gets from grateful folks like you on this here ELO list. >...and hand these projects over to one of EMI's staff compilers for >completion. Now c'mon... this is a joke, right? EMI HAVE BEEN compiling these things for 30 years. They call the albums/CDs "Best of The Move" (Every time!), use the same stock photos and even sometimes add fantasy members to the group (The fantastic job ANOTHER EMI compiler did adding Denny Cordell to the Move as a band member???! Now THAT was bizarre.... but I guess kind of creative, so I give him points for that). EMI... Every Mistake Imaginable (I left out the "t" in mistake because I am psychically channelling an EMI exec as I write this. Yow! It's a dark and scary place to write from - but I am swilling expensive brandy from a big glass so it's not all bad!) That's what Our Rob's working with/against. It's a miracle anything gets out at all. So I guess the question is... Should Rob let us know what he's working on and that there's a chance things could possibly be released... OR ...because we have a few folks so anally retentive that their heads, in all probability, will IMPLODE on the perceived notion that something won't happen EXACTLY as Rob guess-timates it (because realistically folks, with these big labels it ALL really is a crap shoot. Even Michael Jackson doesn't know. How about THAT?!), we should put the "Cone Of Silence" over Rob, forbidding him to utter a word until everything is an absolute reality. What nonsense. I'm embarrassed that Rob had to take even ONE SECOND from remixing and compiling Message From The Country and ELO II (Two of the finest albums ever made - I'd be nervous just to touch the two inch reels that hold this magic!) to answer such a loony charge. >None of us are getting any younger. Those of us who were in our mid >teens when these albums were orginally released are now in our >mid-40's.What about releasing this stuff while we're all still here >on this planet? Rob Caiger's credibility (as a CD compiler) is defunct. As long as his credibility as a bad-ass mofo is still intact, there is hope (see, Rob... all is not lost! Stiff upper lip dear boy!) Hey Phil... I'm probably about your age. We've waited 30 years for this stuff to be done right, what's another year or two? As the late, great Orson Welles once said while selling his soul to the Devil disguised as a TV commercial, "I will sell NO WINE before it's time..." I'd suggest a little less whine on this list... at least until someone serves the cheese! "It's all one big plastic hassle!"
