I originally had it on United Artists US Split Ends compilation (more of a hybrid album actually, they took MFTC and cut out My Marge, Ben Crawley Steel Company and Don't Mess Me Up and replaced them with the Move's U.K. Harvest singles releases from 1971-72). I would blast the beejeesus out my speakers and sing along to this. It's got that great Move trademark bass line, fantastic guitars and saxes, nice piano from Jeff, tasteful loud drumming from Bev and snarly lusty vocals from Roy and funny lyrics. And it swings, too. Tap your toes or move your backside, it just moves a part of you when ya hear it; you just can't be still. Some may contend that the track could have been shorter, that it may go on too long, but I would beg to differ. In fact it's just about the right length. It doesn't fade out but has a definite ending, making one want to run over and cue up the tone-arm on their old phonographs or repeat on their CD players (if you were somewhat fortunate enough to find the "Great Move! The Best Of The Move" and not that awful Canadian MFTC reprint) and hear it again. As The First Light series continues, it will be great to go through all the extras stuff and find out all the neat things that went on during the creation of what essentially became the best and most criminally overlooked contractual obligation album of all time. After the prog rock experiment that was Looking On (The ELO list is having an interesting prog rock discussion right now, so I guess I had to throw that in), MFTC shows Lynne getting back in touch with his inner Beatle infatuation once more and shows Wood going rock'n'roll retro on quite a few numbers, too. The odd duck here to me is still It Wasn't My Idea To Dance. Was that slated for Electric Light Orchestra and then assigned to MFTC instead? Perhaps the new liner notes for the remaster will answer that question. I've always suspected Jeff Lynne contributed little or nothing to it, that Roy, using Bev's bone-crushing drums and his own unique bass runs as the foundation, just kept building up guitars and horns and constructed this aural assault on the senses pretty much by himself. Who cares if the horns are slightly off pitch. In fact, this actually adds to the over-all bedlam-like atmosphere of the track. It starts off very innocently, with some sweet sounding acoustic guitar picking and then- wham!- the earth trembles with thunderous bass and drums, while musical mayhem keeps coming at the listener. I never tire of hearing this one. It usually causes my wife to leave the room. I once played this track for a bass player that I was in a band with for a while who's really into the variety of sounds that can be gotten out of the bass guitar. When I told him the year it was recorded his comment was, "Wow, that sound is really advanced for that time period". Roy ahead of his time again.... Back in the 6o's I walked into a music shop. While I was browseing, I came upon this album with a cartoon cover: four cartoon superhero's. I had to have it just to hear what kind of music it was. "Shazam" who are these guy's? Been a WOODy fan since. There's only one band I like better. What's strange is that I don't know anyone else that even know's who Roy is. ROY, MOVE, ELO, THEY made some amazing music. After all those years I found some fans. Someone needs to let me in on some of the things I have missed. When Roy left ELO, think of what we would have missed if he had not Jeff might have the fame. Roy was on a magical music tour. I would have hated to have missed that bus. Thanks to Stephen and Plastic Ono Dream (who e-mailed me off list); so the answer is Move contemporary and fellow Brummie Denny Laine! Since Stephen says "solo" song above, I'm assuming that it's the time between his quitting the Moodies (roughly 1966) and forming Balls (1969)? Anyway, at least it does have a bit of an R&B connection as the Denny-led Moodies were definitely in the "blue-eyed soul" category. The song is credited to "Lane" on the back of the Shazam reissue. Obviously a typo. Didn't think to do a search for this song at allmusic.com until just now. Here's what they had to say about the Something Else EP: Something Else by the Move was recorded 'live' on February 27th, 1968 at a show at London's Marquee Club. It captures the quintet in full cry going through a brace of their favorite covers. Kicking off with a nice turn on the Byrds' "So You Want To Be A Rock'n'Roll Star," the group moves on to Love's "Stephanie Knows Who," a psychedelic with loads of wah wah guitar from Roy Wood. After two old rockabilly classics, Eddie Cochran's title track and Jerry Lee Lewis' "It'll Be Me," the band launches into Spooky Tooth's "Sunshine Help Me." An unedited version of this performance with a longer guitar solo closes this collection. The other bonus tracks include cutting edge R&B like "Piece Of My Heart" and Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher," both heard here for the first time since their recording along with Denny Laine's "Too Much In Love." The band tracks are pub rock bash'n'crash all the way while the vocals (most of them rerecorded in 1968 when the live versions were deemed unusable due to tape distortion) are spot on harmonies and impassioned singing by Carl Wayne at his best. A nice souvenir of how bands truly sounded before p.a. systems, monitors and assorted electronic voodoo boxes could make you sound 'just like the record.' - Cub Koda The first time I heard the Something Else tracks (on the Shazam CD that came out in '93) I could not stop imagining what The Move might have done with Try A Little Tenderness (Otis Redding's version.) Nice words about Roy and the boys written by a kindred spirit, under-rated, largely over-looked guitarist Cub Coda. For those on the list who may not recognize the name, Cub was lead guitarist & vocalist for Brownsville Station, a power trio who had one hit back in the early 70's with "Smokin' In The Boy's Room". He went on to become a respected rock archivist, much like Lenny Kaye, and wrote for Goldmine and other publications as well as a few books. He passed away a couple of years ago. RIP, Cub. Speaking of Lenny Kaye, list members may want to know he is is a huge fan of Roy's and covered "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday" on a CD titled "A Christmas Extravaganza" that was recorded live at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park a few years ago. Well worth seeking out with the Christmas poised to pounce on us before we know it. At that time, Denny Laine's songs were very popular, (deservedly so, I'll grant you, despite his big flippin' ego. Denny was very very driven to succeed, and that doesn't hurt if you've got talent in this business, American Pop Idol nonsense be damned, those ninnies now on TV they're all a bunch of whinny mollycoddled twits, whoops sorry I've gone off there for a bit calm down, there that's better, phew, where was I?) and he was a fellow Brummie and one of the first to breakout (as a member of the Moody Blues, #1 with "Go Now"), so it was pretty much a tip of the hat and its a pretty good R&B number, too. Dave's been busy working on new recordings so he wasn't able to respond until this weekend. Thought you'd all enjoy his memories of how the song came together. --- 'Something' was recorded at Ladbrookes Studio in Bristol Street, Birmingham, on 16 Jan 68 (called 'That Certain Something') in a session of 5 songs, 3 Steve Gibbons songs, 2 mine. Recorded again on 9 Apr in session of 4 songs - 3 of mine, 1 of Richad Tandy. I think Carl sang it on this later session, and Steve Gibb on the earlier, but I'm not sure. Anyway, I remember playing it to Carl on guitar at his house, and he picked up on it straight away. I have diary notes which say it was released stateside (on A&M) on 26 Jul 68, and the Italian version was recorded at Olympic on 18 Sep 68. On 13 Nov 69 (at Galaxy - Don Arden's management company in London.) Don Arden suggested it as an A side. He asked my thoughts and I preferred the opinion that Blackberry Way was the more commercial track! I like what the Move did with it, and of course Denny Cordell's production, using strings. The song was fortunate for me, in that the A side 'Blackberry Way' got to number one. It wasn't written for anyone or anything in particular, just the flow of life. I was just trying to compose an entertaining song with a nice tune at the time... Hope this is helpful. You've caught me at the right time. I am just composing some memoirs for a book, hence the dates above!! I always believed the orchestra was a result of a mellotron until corrected. ('Blackberry Way' did use a mellotron.) Then came along the worst 'Move' single 'Curly where's your girley for christ sakes! 'The 'B' side again by Dave Morgan (This time tomorrow) is a real corker!!! If it would have been the 'a' side i bet it would have been a 'Top 5' hit!!! Why Roy Wood gave away 'Dance around the maypole' and 'Caroline' and kept 'Curly' for the 'Move' is unbelievable!!!. What a poor song to go to the US on tour!!!!! I bet ROY wished he let the 'MOVE' record 'Caroline, (The Casuals recorded it and it was a flop!!! It is bloody amazing) a great song by Roy, instead of 'Curly'. I bet Carl thinks 'Curly' is a weak 'Move' song too!! I am amazed the incredible 'Shazam' album was recorded around the same time!!! I wish to thank Dave Morgan for two of the best 'B' sides from the Move in the 60's. The first big mistake the 'Move' made was not sticking to their guns and releasing 'Omnibus' on the 'A side' of 'Wild Tiger Woman' it again would have been a Top 5 hit the second is 'CURLY'!!! I hope Rob finds all the Move master tapes including 'Curly's!!! All the best to all you MOVE fans. If SACD is that good please Rob get the MASTERS put out on CD IN THAT FORMAT!! ********** Subject: Re: Dave Morgan's "Something" Date: Sun, 22 Sep 2002 15:13:45 -0700 From: Toshiki Komeda Andrew Footman wrote: >Then came along the worst 'Move' single 'Curly where's your girley >for christ sakes! I just heard the new Rolling Stones re-masters in Super Audio CD aka SACD. The format plays on regular CD and the new SACD players. The sound is absolutely unbelievable. It helped that ABKCO went back and completely took care with the remastering of this entire series (all 327 song track masters) and released it at an affordable and or competative price. Finally a digital format that actually surpasses the original vinyl, even if you have a cheap or modest stereo hi fi with average speakers. We have to chuck away all our Move, Idle RAce, Wizzard, ELO, Roy Wood and Travelling Wilbury Cd's now and have Rob, Roy and Jeff completely redo the whole bit for this new format. Well not only do I now HAVE to live for another twenty years, we've all got to ensure that Roy, Jeff and Rob maintain their health to ensure the project can go forth!
