Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 16:33:44 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins "Blue Moons" by The Trevor Burton Band features 11 tracks that are part of Trevor's live show, with two written by Trevor, one by Richard Tandy and some excellent covers. Recorded at BBC Studios, Pebble Mill Birmingham, without any overdubbing, it's an all-out blues album that showcases Trevor's scorching guitar and smokey voice. Highly recommended. Initial copies of the album ordered via The Move Online will be signed by both Trevor Burton & Richard Tandy. It contains some great songs. Mama's intro is a great bit of guitar playing, then wham the song hits you like a hammer. All Roy's little twist and turns sneak in making it grab your attention right to the end. The first time i heard it was on a UK Album called 'California Man', which was released in 1974 (Now out on cd cost me £4.99),it contains about half of MFTC plus 'Harvest 'A and B sides. Then i found a copy of MFTC. Just like 'It wasn't my idea to dance', it sounds like it is about to end in utter chaos shaking the speakers to bits in places then back to that nice acoustic. Brillo! They disbanded to early they should have made another album. Shame they called it a day after 'California Man' and 'Do Ya' But then again what a way to bow out. ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Until Your Mama's Gone" Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2002 14:58:44 -0700 From: Richard Messum A stonking track to be sure, right from that lovely, jaunty opening guitar figure (which i once, very proud of myself, actually learned how to play, although i've forgotten it now). Then that stomach-churning chunky bass enters and pummels you into submission and Roy growls one of his best lyrics ever: "It's hard to get up in the morning, no matter who you're working for, but you'll find a way when the landlord's knocking on your door." Is there any here among us who can't identify with that? Add a crazy piano solo, some absolutely perfect electric guitar, and the result is one of my top five favourite Move songs (my top five now consisting of about 25, but this one is right up there near the top). On MFTC this track leads to "No time," which is a bit of a throwaway (imho), but on "Split Ends" it takes you to "Tonight," which is one of the best of The Move's poppier numbers. Never a dull moment. ********** Subject: Re: Song Of The Week: "Until Your Mama's Gone" Date: Sun, 29 Sep 2002 16:33:09 -0700 From: kakman1 Oh, it's the relentless pile driving bass figure that just moves the song right along while keeping it rooted to the ground. The slipcase limited edition 2CD version was deleted by EMI on 1st September and will now revert to CD 1 only - The Electric Light Orchestra (No Answer). Apologies for those who have previously ordered and have been waiting patiently. Your CD's, plus something extra, have been shipped and will be with you soon. The Move never met them on their lone speed record dash across America tour. Did Wizzard ever run into them and ahem, you know, become part of the Plaster Caster collection? Yes. As a couple list members mentioned, they're all on Something Else From The Move ...plus! It'll Be Me 5. Sunshine Help Me (original EP version) 6. Piece Of My Heart 7. Too Much In Love 8. Higher And Higher (Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) 9. Sunshine Help Me (unedited version) I'd never heard "Too Much In Love" because I hadn't gotten around to getting Something Else...plus yet. Better get to ordering that one... >i have great versions of those 2 songs on "the move @ >the bbc", these aren't from there are they ? No, the bonus tracks from Shazam were recorded at the Marquee club. Here's what's on the BBC Sessions (1998) CD: You'd Better Believe Me / Night Of Fear / Stop Get A Hold Of Myself / Kilroy Was Here / Walk On The Water / I Can Hear The Grass Grow / Morning Dew / Flowers In The Rain / So You Wanna Be A Rock 'n' Roll Star / Stephanie Knows Who / Cherry Blossom Clinic / Hey Grandma / Fire Grandma / Weekend / It'll Be Me / Useless Information / Kentucky Woman / Higher and Higher / Long Black Veil / Wild Tiger Woman / Piece Of My Heart / Blackberry Way / Goin' Back / California Girls / Christian Life These were all recorded between 1967 and 1968, I believe. The Move's "California Girls" certainly was...different. :) ********** Subject: Re: The Roy at the VU bootleg Date: Fri, 20 Sep 2002 12:56:09 -0700 From: Poisongold Hi, Lynn et al: I don't have the boot and I live in the USA, but I have a burner and I would be happy to be part of a "taping" tree. The reason it's taking longer than I expected to get this "bootleg the bootleg" project off the ground is that I can't seem to get Midnight Records to send me my order. Because I sent my CD to Roy, I had to order another one for myself. That was back at the beginning of September. They sent me some strange-looking Stephen Still bootleg instead of what I ordered, and said I had to return that before they could send me what I did order. Now they're telling me I have to wait for new stock to come in. (I guess the bootleg company has to press up another batch, which they'll be selling for $19.99 a pop. That's disgusting.) Anyway, a fellow fan is sending me his so I don't have to wait and can soon get copies to all the great people on this list who have volunteered to burn copies for others. I'll also be scanning the artwork (such as it is) and sending JPEGS to the "burners" so they can duplicate the entire bootleg. So just give me a few days to get the CD in hand and I'll turn it around quickly. ********** Subject: Who did ROY play with? Don't know when they first connected but it's been a long happy mutual admiration society. Brian Wilson was very aware of Roy's ouvre and during Wizzard's 1974 USA Tour invited Roy to play sax and sing on "15 Big Ones". Roy had been equally enamoured of Brian Wilson and his production technique since the Beach Boys Pet Sounds and had openly thanked them on the sleeve of the "Forever" 45 rpm. Date: Fri, 27 Sep 2002 14:58:05 -0700 From: Richard Messum I have a Beach Boys album entitled "Greatest Hits - Volume Three: Best of the Brother Years 1970-1986." I quote from Brad Elliott's liner notes: "'Rock And Roll Music' was followed up the singles charts by a new Brian and Mike composition, 'It's O.K.,' a fun, unpretentious rocker that harkened back to the group's classic sound. The basic track for the song had been recorded two years earlier [in 1974], at an impromptu session Brian did with the British rock band Wizzard, led by ELO founder Roy Wood. Not surprisingly, the song slipped easily into the Top 30." Roy's saxophone is unfortunately 'way back in the mix, but the version on this CD is not the version that appeared on "15 Big Ones," but an "Alternate Mix," and to my knowledge i've never heard the original. My CD, by the way, also has what IMHO is The Beach Boys' greatest song, "Sail on sailor." ********** Subject: Re: Who did ROY play with? There most certainly is Lynn, it's a very important on being the western gateway out of London. Not only was it the HQ of the former Great Western Railway and their famous engineer Isambard Kingdom Brunel, it was also the station where the worlds second most well known bear derived his name (I think we will all agree that Pooh has no equal). The last two paragraphs may be of interest to list members... PATRICK KIELTY: ALMOST LIVE (BBC1, 10.35pm) last week featured an observation of the current crisis in the Middle East which earned a favourable response from his Belfast audience. Iraq, said Patrick, was like IRA with a Q on the end of it. And as for Saddam, well, that was just another way of writing Addams. Nice one. By the way, it was good of Cat Deeley to travel all the way to Northern Ireland for the show when it clearly suited her. Yet her representatives constantly refuse requests for her to chat to her local newspapers in Birmingham. I've lost count of the number of times I've politely requested an interview with our local beauty and never got anywhere, even though she's been working for BRMB. Or rather Capital in London, since BRMB merely takes a feed. Ooops, I'm not supposed to tell you that. As an albeit highly-paid presenter, Miss Deeley and friends could do to take a lesson in humility from the likes of Noddy Holder, Robert Plant, Meera Syal, Roy Wood and Jasper Carrott. These are local stars who've actually created great works. Yet, despite their extraordinary gifts, they remain endearingly humble, and accessible, too. ********** Subject: Re: Roy Wood: "endearingly humble" Date: Wed, 25 Sep 2002 19:12:27 -0700 From: "Andrew Footman" Too right!
