That being said, put me down for five copies (I always give them away to friends who probably wish I would give them "Sting" CDs instead). What I would like to see is a clear delineation - a timeline - when these tracks were recorded and with what lineup. It would be amazing to see who actually plays and sings what on each track (ie. Lynne plays guitar solo one on "Looking On," R. Wood plays second - that kind of thing). During the Rick Price line-up, I know Rick plays some guitar and Roy plays bass - which tracks? I've even heard rumors that Carl Wayne may have played a little bass in the Move (didn't all members of The Move excluding Bev play bass in a band at one time? No wonder they're so heavy!) I know it even gets quite confusing who sings what part, especially with the original group. It would be great to see the definitive chart of who's singing what on each song. Finally, and I know this might be a little difficult to put together, a round table-type discussion of each song by all contributing players. ie: Roy: "Well, I wrote this song on my lunch break..." Bev: "I always hated this song and refused to play on it because..." Trevor: "Man, I just want to play the blues..." Ace: "The reason that I was a pop star is..." Carl: "I should have listened to Roy when he said..." That kind of thing. Judging by the really cool interviews that Rob & Lynn have arranged with Ace, Rick Price, etc. I think this could be done and, at least for me, it would be a very interesting read. ESPECIALLY if they would really focus on the music and the songs. Also interesting would be input from peripheral players (Richard Tandy, Bill Hunt, backup singers, etc) and producers... especially regarding Roy's, and later Jeff's, methods in the studio. (Muso side note) Type of instruments played. Fender guitars? Basses? Amps? Banjar??? etc. The transition from Move to ELO is so hazy. What songs were recorded in which order? Which ELO songs were actually meant to be Move? (10538?) Which songs from Boulders were meant to be Move? (She's Too Good For Me?) Which songs from Boulders were meant to be ELO? (Dear Elaine?). ...And finally, did Roy fall or was he pushed from ELO? (kidding! Of course we'll NEVER know). And finally, thanks to Lynn and Rob for still pushing for these releases. I would have never dreamt - IN A THOUSAND YEARS - that we would have such a fount of information about albums that you couldn't even find out about when they were released. My lifetime goal is to have at least 25 CDs/albums called "Best Of The Move." Keep 'em coming!!! Joe PS: I defer to my friends John DeSilva & Joe Doyle to pick the tracks. They both have impeccable taste. PSS. And Dr. Bob can time each one. ********** Subject: Re: Best Of The Move Comp Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 11:33:56 -0800 From: Rob Caiger >To tell the truth, another "Best Of The Move" isn't really the most >exciting release that I can think of. Exactly - think "contractual obligation" though I will ensure there'll be something on there that won't have been heard before. Best - Rob ********** Subject: Very Best of the Move Tracks Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 11:34:57 -0800 From: David Friedman I thought that I'd respond with my track suggestion/listing for the forthcoming compilation that Rob is working on. It may not be that original, but I'd rather see some cool album cuts on there rather than just laundry listing all of the A and B sides (the A sides should definitely be represented, but B-sides like "This Time Tomorrow" and "Down on the Bay" should not be favored over key album tracks). And as an aside, I'd love to see detailed track listing notes including recording dates and locations, players on the tracks, guest musicians (i.e. Richard Tandy on keyboards on Blackberry Way should be noted), chart position, original record label and catalog number, and most importantly the ACTUAL songwriter (so many of their comps have incorrect information listed). It would be cool to give the Move fans out there some information that they don't already know or have regular access to (I'd rather see some of this information rather than read about Tony Secuna for the billionth time). Anyway, those are just my thoughts are here are my suggestions: Night Of Fear Disturbance I Can Hear the Grass Grow Flowers in the Rain Lemon Tree Fire Brigade Walk Upon the Water Useless Information Something Else (Live) Wild Tiger Woman Omnibus Blackberry Way Something Curly Beautiful Daughter Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited Brontosaurus What? If the purpose of such a collection is to win new converts, let's face it, at this late date, and as much as we'd love it to be otherwise, a mass acceptance of The Move as being ahead of their time and overlooked geniuses, is unlikely. The record-buying public nowadays, in general, is simply not interested in anything beyond the formulaic and disposable pop rubbish that infests the charts. If we find one or two people who hear The Move for the first time and say "omigod!" we're doing well. Plus, everyone on this list will have very strong opinions about what constitutes the "best" of the Move, and will surely already have those songs in their collections, usually more than once. So what's the market for this? Now, what i personally would really like to see, and i realise that this wasn't the question, is something along the lines of The Beatles' "Anthology" series: rare recordings and unreleased out-takes. And i wish it could be Christmas every day. ********** Subject: Move Collection on 2 CDs Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 22:52:03 -0800 From: "Rob Lipshutz" Hello, Readers of Useless Information. I've been "lurking" on the list since I saw the Roy Wood Army at the Village Underground in March (never dreamed I'd hear those songs sung by Roy in concert!). I've enjoyed the postings and have learned a lot, gaining a greater appreciation of Roy's music. But given the chance to suggest a Move compilation, I thought it time to contribute. (About 10 years ago I was lucky to work on a CD collection for Polydor, "The Best of Eric Burdon & The Animals 1966-1968." Now that I've got a CD burner, I've made a hobby of making various collections for me and my friends.) Allow me to introduce myself. I'm 44, originally from Philadelphia. Since 1978 I've managed to make a living programming classic rock radio stations. I've been at Rock 107 in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, Pennsylvania for the past 7 years. When we get a good ratings trend and no one's on my case, I'll slip in a Move track like "Do Ya," "I Can Hear The Grass Grow," or "California Man" into a special feature. We also broadcast Little Steven's Underground Garage program, which plays The Move and countless other unsung bands. Like many of the Americans on this list, I discovered The Move after they'd ceased to be. I guess I first heard about the band in magazine articles about ELO. I first heard The Move working in the music department of my college radio station in the mid-70's. First "Do Ya," then "Tonight" and "California Man" from the "Split Ends" Lp on United Artists (an easily found cut-out then). I got A&M's "Best Of The Move" double album and was astonished that songs as great as "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" and "Blackberry Way" were virtually unknown over here. I've collected just about everything else since then and if not liable for infractions, I'd be happy to burn CD's of rare stuff I've got such as the "On The Road Again" Lp or the "big band" version of "California Man." I had the pleasure of playing that version for Cheap Trick, who'd never heard it. And then there was the time I played A&R man and suggested to Joe Perry and Steven Tyler of Aerosmith they should record "Brontosaurus" or "When Alice Comes Back To The Farm," pressing a cassette in their hands backstage. (Well, I'd rather they cover Roy Wood than Lennon-McCartney!) I took a listen to my Move albums and came up with this version of the 2 CD set Rob is asking fans for. I split it into the "psychedelic" and "heavy" periods, keeping it chronological, including all the A-sides, vital B-sides and album cuts. Left off cover versions and the live ep, none of which qualifies for a "best of" collection IMHO. THE VERY BEST OF THE MOVE - Disc 1 1966-1969 1. Night Of Fear 2. Disturbance 3. I Can Hear The Grass Grow 4. Wave the Flag And Stop The Train 5. Flowers In The Rain 6. (Here We Go Round) The Lemon Tree 7. Cherry Blossom Clinic 8. Fire Brigade 9. Walk On The Water 10. Do Ya TOTAL TIME: 54:53 Maybe the new Move compilation could include the "long" version of "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" with the guitar tag. I don't think that's ever been issued outside the U.S. I'd prefer all the pre-"Shazam" recordings - the entire first disc - to be in Mono (even the available-in-true-stereo songs from the first album). For the CD booklet - photos of each of the band's line-ups, an accurate discography, full color replications of the Lp jackets, single sleeves and record labels in the CD booklet - laid out flat (not in a montage as on The Movements box set booklet). Thanks, Rob, for looking to the fans for this one. - Rob Lipshutz robl@rock107.com ********** Subject: Re: New Move compilation Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 22:50:21 -0800 From: "Dale G. I would market as Best of Move with bonus CD as it is going to retail for the price of 1 CD anyway. CD1 to cover all A sides - hits and misses include Vote for Me and also Do Ya, if Elvis and the Beatles can cover UK & US on their best of releases why not the Move! CD2 would have to be a selection from the 4 studio albums, and it is very debatable what should be included although I think they should reflect the changing styles/moods. As for the booklet - Rob you know what to say and how to promote, although I definitive list of who was involvedand when with each song would be ideal. Also like the idea of input from the band themselves or maybe Roy and Jeff as the songwriters, waht inspired them to write them etc. It should also lay it on heavy with the future releases in the pipeline, but ensure 'ELO' and Woody 'solo' are included as they all form a history. Any comp will consist of the usual stuff most of us already have. However, I am confident Rob will use source material of stunning quality that will allow us all to hear previously unnoticed nuances in the "hits" we are all familiar with. I would be in favor of including key album tracks along with a few oddities/rarities just to keep it interesting. Rob, it's good to know you already have it in mind to include something we haven't heard before. This will also insure sales to those who might waver about buying another collection with nothing new on it. Too bad the members of the Move couldn't put aside their differences long enough to record a couple of new tracks, ala the surviving Beatles on the anthology series, to be included on this new collection. Now THAT would be fantastic.... one from the original line up for disc one and one from a later line up for disc two! Oh, if it could only be.... I am curious, though, about the 55 min. per disc restriction, since CD's can hold up to 80 mins. of music. Why not utilize all that extra space and give the fans everything they could possibly want in a 2-CD collection? Not complaining, just wondering.... I know in Rob's hands it will be superb. On the liner notes by Bev (thanks Lynn) he said 'This time tomorrow' was by Dave Morgan. On Movements, it says by Roy Wood. He also said 'Curly' was okay, but in his book he says he refused to play on it because it was so tame. Any ideas folks? There were some mistakes in the Movements liner notes - writing credit for "This Time Tomorrow" being one of them. It's well-known in Move circles that Dave wrote two songs for the band, so I don't know how that got botched. I don't have Bev's book handy (it's still packed)... what was the date of the book? He wrote the liner notes for "The Best Of The Move" in 1973. Perhaps he had a change of heart about "Curly"? I had to laugh at this part: "A lot of rumors were spread that the song concerned Carl's pet pig; that was pure hogwash." Good one, Bev! ********** Subject: Re: This Time Tomorrow / Bev & Curly Date: Fri, 13 Dec 2002 00:45:58 -0800 From: kakman I think there's some confusion about what song Bev refused to play on. The only track in Bev's Move/early ELO canon I can find that he refused to play on was "Battle of Marston Moor" from first ELO LP. He did play on "Curly" but opined in ELO Story about the song being very sugary for his taste almost, the very nadir in The Move's recorded output (no mention of "Zing.." obviously!). Recorded and released at the height of Brit cabaret period and on eve of their three date American tour. I could have sworn he didn't but I don't have the book to hand so I'll stand corrected. The book I refer to is the one that came out through Mushroom, and I got it as a Christmas present in 1980. The summing up at one point is quite ironic, as Bev says how they all get along so well and that he could see this line up going on forever. I always thought of it as Roy's weakest album but that may be the fault of the running order. The first three tracks are all very strong and would probably be better split up. Ships in the Night is not a bad closer but I think Under Fire would make a great final track. Here's my take on the lyrics: UNDER FIRE (Wood) (Starting Up) Ooh, I'll never get out Until we both fall down down down Somebody's watching me from over in the corner I see them every time I go downtown I don't know what they want from me - I wish they'd go away! We'll feel their glance until we both fall down down down The buildings grow and overflow into the alleyways Don't give me any room to hide at all This mental barricade has pinned me up against the wall The ladder moves away and I fall down down down I'm under fire and I'll never get out Just like a refugee - I know they're after me I'm under fire and I'll never get out They know me instantly Find an escape for me Right now! My fight is hopeless if they leave some indication It won't be easy when I run to ground Though every now and then I often wish they'd go away I'll never sleep until they all fall down down down I'm under fire and I'll never get out Just like a refugee - I know they're after me I'm under fire and I'll never get out They know me instantly Find an escape for me Right now! Can you identify or read some information? This iron curtain never hears a sound Their faces merge into the glass inside their limousine And they can see me going down down down down down I'm under fire and I'll never get out Just like a refugee - I know they're after me I'm under fire and I'll never get out They know me instantly Find an escape for me Right now! I'm under fire and I'll never get out Just like a refugee - I know they're after me I'm under fire and I'll never get out They know me instantly Find an escape for me I know they're after me Right now!
