Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 01:14:48 -0800 From: Andrew Codd So I spent last night catching up on my ironing and laundry (The glamorous life of a single guy huh!) Come into work this morning and I see a post saying that Roy Woods army played at the Roadhouse in Covent Garden last night and Carl Wayne sang with Roy and I was at home trying not to burn myself as per usual and watching Malcolm in the middle on sky! 'Scuse my French but "OHHHH BOLLOCKS!" Normally I'd take any excuse to leave the ironing and maybe wear a slightly dishevelled t-shirt into work but this is pretty heartbreaking. I've been searching for a special Christmas event to take a young lady to over the holiday period and I think this would have been pretty much perfect. Now how am I supposed to broach the question of asking her if she likes Woody or not? ;-) Regards Andrew Codd. (Obviously I've been bad and Santa checked his list twice!) ********** Subject: Re: Woody live in London last night? How the hell did I miss this? Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 02:41:21 -0800 From: "Lynnette Cannell" As this gig was not listed anywhere, to my knowledge, let alone the official website, could this have been a private event? In which case, no need to beat yourself up on this, Andrew as you would not have been able to go. I too, have been missing my annual dose of pre-festivity Woody - as all the gigs (all?!) were too far away for me to go to. I, too, would have made a beeline for CG had I known, and been able to go.......... However, have noticed that a certain band are booked for Bilston on March 7th. See you there? Happy Christmas everyone, Lynnette ********** Subject: Re: Woody live in London last night? How the hell did I miss this? Roy played in London and I didn't know about it :( It would have made up for having to miss the Telford gig earlier this month (and would have had the advantage of being a short train ride away and not 2.5 hours car journey.) Maybe next year I'll get to see him play live. Give your love for Christmas. ********** Subject: Re: Woody live in London last night? How the hell did I miss this? Date: Mon, 23 Dec 2002 11:38:26 -0800 From: Lynn Hoskins >I am really angry about this, I think that any of Roys gigs should >be >posted on the web site............ Okay... well, I was hoping to confirm Lynnette's thought that it was a private event, so I phoned the Roadhouse. Turns out it was a public event, though not widely advertised. The nice man I spoke with could hear the disappointment in my voice and said sympathetically, "I'm so sorry...I wish I could help." (I wish you could, too!) All I can tell you is that Roy books his own gigs, and sometimes he nearly forgets to tell his band. He marches to the beat of his own drummer, as you know. If I or his website had been informed, I can assure you the information would have gone out to fans. All I can say is...sorry! ********** Subject: Re: Woody live in London last night? Yes they should. And usually they are. But if Roy doesn't announce them or tell anybody... Maybe another reason why no one spotted this gig in the usual London gig listings is the venue is basically a glorified pub, hosting tribute and retro artists, usually miming to a backing track. I believe the club were looking for an act to entertain the Christmas party and tourist crowd that pour into Covent Garden in the week up to Christmas. It could have been worse, it could have been a residency. Or maybe that's to come next year... Stating the obvious, this is not the sort of venue Roy should be playing. A shame. ********** Subject: Re: Woody live in London last night? How the hell did I miss this? Date: Tue, 24 Dec 2002 09:08:49 -0800 From: "Ken Latta" To back up Lynn's message, it is true what she says. Roy does manage himself, but he's terrible at keeping others informed, including the band, of up and coming dates. The website often has to rely on the other members of the band informing us about what gigs are happening. I, like everyone else, found out about the Roadhouse gig when it was too late. I'm informed that The Roadhouse is a small venue (not much larger than a pub I was told) so maybe this is why it was low profile event. I think it must be a rock 'n' roll trait. I work with two others who are equally hopeless at keeping me informed with regard to gig dates for their websites! Sadly, in the end, everyone loses out. Lack of publicity = lack of crowd = lack of bookings = lack of success, eventually leading to no gigs. This is a formula that no fan wants to see. Found out earlier today that not only did Carl perform "Fire Brigade" and "Flowers In The Rain" with Roy Wood's Army at the Roadhouse gig, but he also did "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" and sang backing vocals on "Blackberry Way" and "I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday." He was on twice, actually closing the programme with all the GMTV staff and technicians, plus a live link up to Perth Australia with thousand of Brits who have moved there over the years. Everybody was rocking to the band, a great way to close for everybody... Great exposure for Roy of course, can't wait to get him on the Americana next July certainly looks like we are in for a really rocking close to our festival.... It's not surprising that he did it this way. A big band like his takes some setting up for just a few minutes air time, knowing what the television producers are like, hardly anybody gets to play 'live' on the chat or morning shows.. Too bad Lynne took over and the group mutated >into Electric Light Orchestra. What the fudge is this guy talking about?? Jeff Lynne hardly "took over". I believe that when Jeff joined The Move (after declining the first offer), Roy had already conceived the ELO plan. This is why "Message" and "No Answer" were recorded simultaneously. We all know the stories about Roy's departure from ELO, so I'll leave that alone. Obviously, Roy knew he was leaving the band in good hands. Hell, he played on the first two albums, (as will be clarified soon) and even stated that "Eldorado" was the type of thing he envisioned for the band from the start. It's not as if Roy left the band, then they released "Xanadu!" (which I happen to like, thank ya very much) Anyway, the reviewer really gave Jeff short shrift. Jeff was recruited by Roy for his talent, which he's handily displayed over the past 35 years. Just had to insert my 2 cents. Larry Harris Dallas, Texas ********** Subject: Roy Wood & Squeeze? Date: Sun, 22 Dec 2002 13:16:00 -0800 From: Lynn Hoskins Ran across this review from 10 years ago, almost to the day. I didn't know that Roy had once opened for Squeeze. Did anyone on the list go to this show? I'm assuming it was Roy Wood's Big Band. ---- Rock Review: Tucking in to salt and vinegar The Times; London (UK) December 23, 1992 by Alan Jackson Although billed as an acoustic evening, the three hours of entertainment headlined by Squeeze tilted away from conventional notions of guitar-based minimalism and heavily towards the kind of plate-throwing party atmosphere encouraged in certain Greek restaurants. Chris Braides, a young singer-songwriter championed by the top band's Glenn Tilbrook, has material melodic yet thoughtful, which shows him to have a highly original turn of phrase. A debut album is forthcoming. Following him was a man whose music attracted many adjectives during his 1970s heyday, yet never once "thoughtful" or "acoustic". Roy Wood, originally of The Move, latterly of Wizzard, appears exactly the same at 46 as he did at 26 largely invisible beneath a mountain of hair and a luxuriant moustache. A fan pointed out excitedly that he and his eccentric band of players and singers ran through close on 20 songs in the course of a 45-minute set, all but one of them Top 20 hits. It would be unseasonally grumpy to say that every one sounded exactly the same, including the sole item of new material the usual raucous stomper, this time titled "Kiss Me Goodnight, Boadicea". Squeeze, in a 90-minute set, married the best elements of both preceding acts with a nicely-judged and executed performance propelled by Tilbrook's winning persona and solid but unflashy singing and playing skills. Elements of Braides's quiet lyricism and the picture postcard humour Wood aspires to are combined in old favourites such as "Cool For Cats" and "Up The Junction" each a rare example of colloquial yet articulate pop song writing, and with a bitter-sweet experience of life discernible between their respective lines. More recent material proved the enduring worth of Tilbrook's partnership with fellow band member Chris Difford. That they can fill the (closure-threatened) Town and Country to capacity for three nights running without any recent hits to galvanise the box office says much about the appeal of Squeeze. And that their salt-and-vinegar view of London life kept one of the year's most good-natured crowds rapt throughout, only underlines the point.
