Actually, Roy's oriental get up on the "Starting Up" album cover would have complimented the sleeve for this fine late period Move single quite nicely. I got the United Artists 45 of this when it finally came out after being withdrawn by MGM. I remember reading about it in, I think, an imported copy of Melody Maker but never actually heard it till I got it. I recall, too, that it took my record shop quite a long time to get it for me. This was no doubt due to the "false start" of it first being on MGM, then withdrawn and subsequently being issued by UA. I played it, and the B side "Down On The Bay", till the grooves started to go grey. This was their first record for UA, unless I'm mistaken. I was not aware of the MGM version till many years later. I have a promo copy of it, stock copies are almost impossible to find. Does anyone on the list have one? When "Split Ends" came out, I was delighted to find that there was a cool slide solo by Roy that had been edited out of the single, a practice UA seemed to repeat often with Roy's singles. Makes for interesting collecting. I have many odd mono & edited mixes of Move/Wizzard/ solo singles. This could very well be my favorite Move song.. it seems to be the one I play for alot of people. I think mainly it's just one of those rare goosepimply moments where two of my heroes share lead vocals on the same song. It's got a little of everything. You know, when you hear one of them wilbury trax and all of a sudden Jeff Lynne pops in and you get that "hey! that's the guy!" kinda feeling? Well, this song does that for me. Nobody can sing like Jeff... he's the best. What a choice nugget from a golden era! ********** Subject: Chinatown au go-go Date: Wed, 26 Mar 2003 22:57:06 -0800 From: Plastic Ono Dream wait! the lyrics in "chinatown" are NOT "go go day" but "cold cold day"?! awww...sez who? Listen live by going to the Classic Gold website: http://www.classicgolddigital.com/index.shtml Carl is expected on at 7:15am, or shortly after that. Very appropriate for Tony to have a member of The Move on his first show. Tony was the announcer when BBC Radio one premiered with "Flowers In The Rain" back on 30 September 1967. From there, Carl will be on with Bill Rennells on Saga Radio (digital). Bill's show is from 10am to 1pm. Listen online: http://www.saga.co.uk/sagaradio/ It's hard to know what Carl will be talking about. The Hollies, The Move...who knows! Guess we'll have to listen... P.S. Not only was he a an incredible bassist but his vocals were as good as anybody else in the band and that's saying quite a bit. It was quite the revelation. ********** Subject: Re: Ace! I was lucky enough to be played some of the tracks a few weeks ago and they certainly aren't just sketchy demos. There were a few parts where some of the tracks obviously need some backing vocals but it isn't much more than that. I think Ace deserves to have his album sound as good as it possibly can. As for the quality of the songs. I made Rob play a few of them several times in my car and frankly they made me wish Ace had been allowed to contribute more to The Move. I think we will all be thrilled with the results when this album finally gets released. (The wait will definitely be well worth it!) Regards Andrew Codd ********** Subject: Re: Ace! Yes, he's playing his "old" hits (that really are timeless, don't you think?) but has re-arranged and repackaged them so that they are presented in a whole new light. That's my take, anyway. I think that some songs work better than others, when re-worked for a "big band." One was particularly mind-blowing...it's been a year and I'm still reeling from "I Can Hear The Grass Grow." Nobody, and I mean NOBODY on this planet plays guitar like Roy Wood. By the way, "Kiss Me Goodnight, Boadicea" was announced as "new" in New York because, well, it was new to US, eh? ;) Having a 12-piece band is a financial and logistical nightmare as far as touring goes, so I don't know when we'll see Roy Wood's Army back in the States. Though I am hopeful that Roy will re-invent himself and his songs yet again, I'm also eternally grateful for those four days at the Village Underground when so many of us finally got to SEE the grass grow. ********** Subject: One Year Ago... I never thought I'd ever see the man perform live in the US, so last night was a special treat. I also never thought I'd see 8 horn players crammed up on such a small stage as they have at the VU, but they handled it with great aplomb. I'll do a more detailed review of the show later, but suffice it to say that Woody and the Army rocked last night, and I can't wait for tonight's performance! I'm taking a lot of pictures as well, and will probably put the best of them up on the web soon, so I'll let you know when that happens. JD San Jose, CA ********** Subject: One Year Ago... Actually Mike Cross wrote down the set list the first night, so he'll have the definitive answer to that question - for those of you who have seen the Army in the UK my understanding is that it is essentially the same set that they perform over there. They did do "Big Girl Blues" both nights as the only really "new" song in the set. Roy and the Army were absolutely brilliant Friday night - their sound problems (especially the monitor problems) had been fixed, and they were feeding off of the crowd's enthusiasm (which was in high gear the entire show) - Roy was on top of his game, and the rest of the band cooked. Aside from Jenna (one of the trumpet players) taking a tumble on stage during the solo bits of "Are You Ready To Rock" the band didn't miss a beat or cue (she recovered quite admirably however - great solo as well). The last three numbers of the night were most memorable to me - Blackberry Way, I Can Hear The Grass Grow, and I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday. The whole crowd was singing along, and the band was peaking in top form - it was dare I say it, magical. JD San Jose, CA (currently NYC!!!) ********** Subject: One Year Ago... I went to the Hollywood premier of ALL THIS AND WORLD WAR II! Yep, that's right. And that may have been the last time the film has ever been shown. I don't remember it being in any other theaters except Hollywood's Cinerama Dome for a couple of days. In fact, this may be the worst movie ever made... so bad, it hasn't even been released on video tape (!!!), let alone, DVD. I won a pair of tickets at a record store outlet that I was working at. As I remember, the album had not been released yet, but there were rumors that both Jeff Lynne and Roy Wood were involved. So I'm there, man! They tried to make it a REAL Hollywood premier, complete with Army Archerd (Mr. Hollywood Movie Biz) greeting the stars as they waltzed down the red carpet. Well, poor Army wasn't prepared for the rock and roll crowd (this is when we still had a few rebels, kids), and the whole night when completely sour for him when Joe Cocker, evidently doing a bit of pre-premier partying, barfed on his shoes. I'm not kidding. My highlight ("Wha??? Joe Cocker vomiting on poor Army Archerd's shoes wasn't it?" I hear you ask incredulously), Keith Moon arriving in some kind of a World War II vehicle running full steam into me while I was looking the other way (gathering wool), and knocking me to the pavement. "You aaaawright?" He barked at me. "Yes, Keith Moon" I said to him whilst still in a bit of a state of shock. "Carry On!!!" he shrieked and took off running again. I'm not kidding. But what about the movie, you ask. The movie was 2 hours plus (it seemed more like 4 hours) of dreary black & white WWII footage with Beatles music as the soundtrack performed by a very eclectic group of mostly British stars. The music SHOULD have been good, but it wasn't. C'mon... how can you make Roy Wood bland? Whoever produced it knows... and if you think Roy was boring, you oughtta hear Frankie Valley and Lyndsey DePaul! Whoaaaaah Nellie. The movie was gawdawful bad. Originally recorded and released in 1982, the song of interest here is "Message In A Bottle", for the vocalist is our Roy Wood. I have to say the strings and brass are real cheesy, but the band, which manges to drown out the orchestra for the most part, is very tight. Roy starts out trying for a Sting imitation but eventually sings more like himself as the song progresses. Good number for him. Can't say whether I recommend anyone should get this, though, unless you're an out and out completist. A lot of this is awfully boring, cheesy or embarassing. The CD I have is actually titled, "The Royal Philharmonic Orchestra plays THE POLICE" and has very useless liner notes. It was released on the EMPORIO label, and is copyrighted 1995 to Music Collection International Ltd., issued under license from Orcan Licensing, Ltd. If I were Roy, I'd re-record this number as a single, but without the strings, I'm sure he'd have a hit with it in the UK and Europe, either with his name on it, or under the guise of the Mega Dance Orquestra. Probably very appropriate for the times, too.
