A lovely single but not connected to the old school rock and roll sound of the Eddie album. Roy wrote great ballads and this holds up to Angel Fingers. Though never made the same head road in the charts. The band are on top form, but i think the album suffered because the record co started to try to dictate to Roy. This album was planed to be a d'ble but the Jazz stuff got chopped off. Wizzard just were the best bunch of muso's about at that time they could lead the field in all types of music. They never have recieved the credit they deserve. They made B sides which showed how good they were. No one to this day could outclass these Guys. If only they would reform. They would blast Jools Holland's Bands of the planet. They are bloody good too! ********** Subject: Re: ELO - No Answer and 2 / Move Reunion Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2003 19:26:27 -0700 From: "Tyler C.Sherman" Frank Cavaliere wrote: >I have 2 questions for all of you. But back then I was in Brick NJ. Anyway, to answer your question about "Wizzard Brew", yes it was reissued a few years ago on a UK Harvest CD but was quickly deleted. The sound was as muddy as the original release. There is a new, expanded reissue being prepared for release hopefully this year with lots of unreleased material, with much improved sound expected. Ditto "Boulders" and "Message From The Country". Hope this answers your question. When we put the tape up, it was something I was hoping for. I do like Ayshea's vocal on the song and think it works well - evoke a lot of memories for me personally of the time - especially her TV show! Even though she sings in a very "Roy-style" and appears to be following Roy's guide vocal, there is nothing on any of the individual tracks - except more cellos! On Nancy Sing Me A Song, for example, there are two tracks of vocals - one Carl's for the original cancelled single and one Roy's for what appeared on Boulders. The b-side to Farewell, the non-Roy composed Best Years Of My Life is obviously all Roy instrumentation, but also features him strongly on backing vocals. Anyway, even though the stereo masters are long gone, Roy can have the multitracks anytime he wants for remixing and maybe adding a new lead vocal.... ********** Subject: ELO 2 expanded/remastered Date: Mon, 14 Apr 2003 19:32:32 -0700 From: Philip Cohen While I'm no longer a member of the ELO or Move lists, I'd like to say that I'm pleased, that after nearly 3 years of difficulties, that the expanded 2-CD edition of "ELO 2" was finally issued. It's definitely a high quality product. I assume that at some point in the next 2 years that the expanded/remastered "The Move-Message From The Country" will be released. But, given how fraught with problems these projects have been, it would be unrealistic for ELO/Move fans to expect any further archival projects. But if any further archival CD projects (beyond "Message From The Country") DO reach the marketplace, I'd be very surprised...but pleasantly so. Don't hold your breath, though.... If the "ELO 2" 2-CD set is ultimately the last-ever CD project of ELO archival music, then its' a fine way for ELO to go out!!! They gave us a lot of great music over the years....and now we've got a little bit more. ********** Subject: Re: ELO 2 expanded/remastered Date: Tue, 15 Apr 2003 10:00:20 -0700 From: kakman1 When I saw Philip Cohen's posting on both the Showdown list and Usless Information list I was intrigued what his remarks about the new ELO remaster would be. Obviously he was pleased with the package and the sound, but he still couldn't resist making a slam against EMI, nonetheless, which may or may not have been indirectly meant for Rob Caiger, too. As many long time suscribers of both lists and Face The Music are well aware of some of the frustrating delays and inexorable hurdles Rob and his team face when preparing these special remasters. Mr Cohen in his inimitable petulant manner has indicated to this day we shouldn't ever expect any more quality releases of this kind, if ever, since Rob is dealing with EMI. Such comments at this time are not helpful or useful. I suppose he felt he had to get one more jab but why publicly act like such a spoilsport, especially before the list members he so publicly walked out on in a huff? He could have just bought the CDs and that would be the end of it. Instead he has to add a warm turd on top of the creme brulee of our celebrations. He's welcome to eat and enjoy his own shite but don't bother offering it to any of the list members. While open communication and differing and constructive criticism is vital and is the life blood of both lists, Mr Cohen's sour remarks are nothing more than poison, sour grapes and resentment. A moment of full disclosure: I'm sure it is no secret to many longtime Showdown list members my own screeds and tirades against SonyMusic and its many confounded actions in the past two or three years. They (my comments) probably haven't been too helpful, especially if anyone from Sony in the hierarchy scans the digests of this list ;0)! But in the end I still remain hopeful that something positive will turn up, especially now that saner heads are prevailing at Sony Music, necessary but painful cuts are being made, and things will turn out well for our Jeff, as far as promotion, support from SonyMusic, now that the goblins have been vanquished, and hopefully never to return again. Sometime in the coming year or two, perhaps Rob will be able to convince Sony to continue or restart a new complete remaster series of the ELO catalogue, with hopefully better packaging and liner notes, photos, etcetra. Or maybe something else entirely different will turn out instead. I remain patient and hopeful. In juxtaposition to what Phil Cohen said about Rob last year, it is Phil who has lost all credibility with respect to this subject (ELO/Move reissues that is). What Rob writes above is exactly correct - Phil has no idea what he's talking about, yet continues to position himself as if he does. Even if only one third of this list gets done, it'll be a major accomplishment. And the fact that Carl and Roy are remaking the classic Jethro Tull album from 1977 is icing on the cake!!! Some very rare tapes may have been stolen in a burglary last year. This has just come to light and if true, a huge loss. These are irreplaceable and are the originals - no copies were ever made because the were taped before the band recorded for EMI / Liberty. I'll know more in a couple of weeks. >Plus Shazam, Looking On, The Move first and the Moves singles. The Move's sound was so idiosyncratic that such classificatory stabs as "in thrall to the Beatles," "classy bubblegum psychedelica," and "from soul covers to West Coast sound" are only misleading-they were heavier and progger than any of that. In 1971, they mutated into the Electric Light Orchestra, which Wood soon left to Jeff Lynne, splitting off to score many more hit singles under his own name and with a band called Wizzard. None of these hits made the slightest commercial dent in the U.S., and by the late '70s, Wood had sunk from view, recording rarely. So when he played his first New York shows in 28 years at the Village Underground March 14 through 17, it was hard to predict the response. But Sunday night, at least, he sure got one. Never at any gig have I encountered such a concentration of men over 40 with beards and long hair. Especially notable were a gaunt, hirsute Mutt and Jeff with great glowing eyes and no trace of gray who looked like they'd just taken the Leprechaun bus down from Sleepy Hollow. Was this a crowd chock-full of old Anglophiles? Old record collectors? Old hippies? Who knew? And when Wood mounted the stage in his long military coat, he fit right in. At 55, his dark hair highlighted with neon extensions, he looked around 40. His powerful voice had lost neither high end nor low, and although he played mostly guitar, he demonstrated his multi-instrumental renown by lugging out the bagpipes for "Are You Ready to Rock," one of many numbers no one sang along to despite repeated encouragement. After one such shortfall, he drank some amber-colored liquid: "For medicinal purposes-that's my specimen from last night." In Britain, clearly, Wood is proud to be an oldies act. In the U.S., he was what he'd always been-a complete weirdo. This effect was augmented by a band Wood called the Thunderbirds, consisting of Climax Blues bass and drums; "the Naylor Twins" on keybs, tambourine, vocals, illustrative jitterbug, and "Rescue Me" interlude; and eight count-'em eight horn players, seven count-'em seven of them female. Shifted for current purposes in the soul covers direction, the music was no better than the old and new songs, which never got better than the opening "California Man." But the event as a whole was one of those serendipitous, certain-to-be-forgotten miracles of pop culture, which has so many more nooks and crannies than any gatekeeper can imagine, keep up with, or, blessedly, control. ********** Subject: Re: One Year Ago...
