The copy I'm used to hearing is on A&M Records, so it's probably American...? I found that record when I was 11 and have loved it ever since. Last year I found a German copy on Polydor from 1970. I agree with Kevin Kunreuther that the Movements set blew it big time by not including the false start of "Don't Make My Baby Blue". In fact, there are many problems with that box set, I think...: Why does John Platt (isn't that his name) call Shazam dense and unlistenable in his liner notes? Dense compared to what? To me Shazam is comparable only to Abbey Road when it comes to sound quality on a record produced in the 60s! Why does the "Something Else" live tracks on the set edit out Carl Wayne's in-between-songs-comments and just reuse his "Thank-y-very-much...thank-you..." again and again? Has anybody else noticed this? Hmmmmm, that's a very interesting idea, In Old England Town pre-dating Metallica riffs. The again check out the riff from Iron Maiden's "The Trooper". I'd say Lars &co. were more likely listening to that than our SOTW. Roy's cello playing does strike one as that of a very frustrated rhythm guitarist. You don't really hear Roy do anything quite like that on the cello since. Come to think of it, one doesn't hear Roy play any cello now (lucky those few who've caught him on the bagpipes!). I wouldn't wager that Lars and the boys have this one in their collections. I find their rhythms more like an over-amplified string section from a symphonic orchetsra who've just returned from a long lunch at the pub, grooving to James Brown and Mahler. Bashing? This is not like those "We hate the Beatles" forums. If anyone needs that, I encourage you to do so, but someplace else. You don't have to love everything Roy Wood has done over the years to belong here. You just have to have the right amount of respect for his works AS WELL AS respect for other Roy fans who actually love everything Woody has released. As for myself, I don't love everything Roy has ever put out, but that's simply because I haven't been exposed to enough of his material. Having all of the Move albums (through "Movements" and "Great Move"), one Wizzard compilation (Disky's) and one Roy solo compilation (Exotic Mixture), plus some really awesome CD-R's of other Roy material I would have never found elsewhere (like the brilliant "Super Active Wizzo" that some fellow list member CD-R'd for me), I consider myself a Woody unconditional fan.......his music has touched my soul, and has inspired me to enjoy life in a different way. Roy's music, since I first discovered it back in 1999 (shortly after my first exposure to ELO's "No Answer"), is different to most of the music I listen to and enjoy, but I love it all the same. Something struck me really hard when I first had contact with "Super Active Wizzo" a couple weeks ago. It was an "out-of-this-world" experience......The kick off track, "Life Is Wonderful", is so powerful, so magic, so "funky", that belongs to every "best of Woody" set that could ever be released (Rob, you have to include it on the "Roy Wood The Wizzard" compilation). It flows naturally on to the rest of the album, each track is as strong as the previous, and when you've finally reached the end with "Earthrise", you can't help but press "play" once again to enjoy "Life Is Wonderful" one more time. There've been just four albums that have done that to me before: ELO's "Time", Yes's "Drama", The Beatles' "Revolver", Bob Dylan's "Freewheelin'" and now the Wizzo Band's "Super Active Wizzo". Hence, it's now among my five "most-beloved" albums of all time, and undoubtedly, will remain there forever. Does this make me a "sucker up"? If the answer is yes, I'm pretty much proud of it. Woody rocks. Period. Super Active Wizzo is one of the best albums Roy did. But it sold badly. It only got a UK release, it got lost in the punk rock music explosion.Roy once said it sold about 35 copies. Mmmm where do you get the idea that so few were pressed from? I didn't start buying records until 1979/1980 so I can't comment first hand on sales of Super Active but I can comment on the 2nd hand sales racks around this time. Super Active Wizzo was by far the most common record in the only 2nd Hand racks I knew of in Ipswich England. There must have been about 12 foot of LP's in the racks and it would not be uncommon to see 3 or 4 Wizzo albums there at any one point. I know I got mine 2nd hand so at least one was sold. I can remember asking my sister about the album once I had got it. I figured a lot of people had bought it but the different style had shocked them so they then sold it on. My sister did remember the TV appearance on the back and I would be surprised if that didn't generate quite a few sales itself. ********** Subject: Re: Tell us the news about yourself... I'm going to introduce myself by responding to the questions below. Thanks for the read. >Your name, age, location, occupation. My name is Len and I'm from NYC. Next month I'll be 50 years old. I currently work in a medical lab. >How long have you been a Move and/or Roy Wood fan? Since 1967 or so. >What was your first Move related experience? I had a friend name Joe at high school who was into English rock as I was. He gave me some Move singles to borrow and I was hooked. >Tell us about your top 5 favorite Move related tracks. This is not fair I have too many favorites! My favorites are 1) California Man 2) Brontosaurus 3) You Sure Got It Now 4) Cherry Blossom Clinic Revisited 5) Ballpark Incident. >What's your favorite Move related album, and why? Without a doubt it's Shazam. I purchased the album from England when it was released. I remember coming home from school and seeing the package. I immediately opened it and played it on my stereo. I nearly blew the speakers it! I have never grown tired of the album and it always sounds as fresh as when I first heard it. >What topics would you like to see discussed on this list? I'm very interested in what Roy is up to and when he will be back in the USA. In addition I'm interested in Jeff Lynne's doings. Also I would like to know what guitars and effects Roy used on the albums. >If you've seen the Move or any member of the Move in concert, tell us >about that show. I saw ELO in NYC back in 1971; it was a great show. I missed going to see Wizzard in New Jersey with my cousin Frank back in 1974? because I had to work adn I would have been fired if I skipped work. But I did see the Army play in NYC (2x) in march of 2002. I even shook hands with Roy. I was speachless throughout the shows. >Tell us about an amusing or interesting situation that has happened >as a result of you being a Move/Roy Wood fan. Well I play guitar and way back in high school and college I tried to get the bands to play Move songs. We called the band Shazam back then and we planned to create the superhero suits as they apeared on the cover of the album and wear them on stage. We didn't get to complete the plan though Usually the band members weren't too fond of the songs so I kept changing members. We did play Cherry Blosson Clinic, Feel Too Good and later on California Man and Do Ya. More recenlty I hooked up with some guys to jam and I introduced them to Move/Wizzard/Wood songs. The other guys hated the music and so I felt it was deja viu all over again. We broke up the band. >Who are some of your other favorite artists/bands? Small Faces, Humble Pie, The Who, Procol Harum, Pretty Things, Beatles, Rolling Stones (until Brian Jones' departure), Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Idle Race, ELO, Kinks, Pink Floyd, XTC. >Which Move related song do you wish one of your favorite bands >would cover? Cheap Trick already did some great covers. I would like to have Roy and Jeff get together with other Move members and do a reunion album of sorts, and have them redo their favorite songs from the era. >What is the one burning question that you have never had answered >in relation to Move/Roy Wood history or music? Why did Roy abruptly leave ELO at its inception to form Wizzard, the complete opposite of what ELO was? >Are you having trouble finding any Move related music on CD? not really. I'm anxiously awaiting the planned remixes of the Move albums. Just ordered the ELO 2 Lost Planet set. Well that's it for now. I hope I didn't bore anyone. ********** Subject: Re: Tell us the news about yourself... The classical piece Wizzard played on "Midnight Special" was "Dance Of The Sugar Plum Fairies" from Tchiakovsy's "Nutcracker Suite". It was used as a tag on the officially unreleased song "But She'll Be Gone", which, as the story goes, Roy wrote on the plane coming over to the US for the '74 tour, performed on "Midnight Special" and, as far as anyone knows, never did again. Hopefully there is a demo of this beautiful song in the vaults that will be part of an upcoming reissue project. Poor sounding bootlegs of it as done on "M.S." do exist, complete with the Tchaikovsky tag. As far as "This Is The Thing" and the scratches, supposedly they are intentional, sort of like the needle-across-the grooves intro of "Mustard". Perhaps a future reissue of this excellent Wizzard instrumental will treat us to a version with the scratches taken out. Wizzards, Tyler ********** Subject: Re: Tell us the news about yourself... Patrik went on to comment that the clean version that appears on the 1999 Edsel Mustard Plus CD must have had the scratches removed. However, I do have a 7" single from 1976 which has a clean version of TTIT. So either Roy created both a clean version and a scratchy version of the song, and the clean version was used on the original single, or only a clean version was made and the tape used for the scratchy CD version was damaged another way. I am certain that the clean version on the Mustard Plus CD is not the scratchy version with the scratches digitally removed. The scratches were so extensive that a cleaned-up scratchy version would leave some aural evidence of the scratches having been removed.
