Date: Mon, 12 May 2003 01:35:44 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins I was scanning the latest UK news in Friday's (London) Times when I spotted a story by Patrick Kidd about Sutton Coldfield. As SC is a town just outside of Birmingham, I thought I'd better read through it in case it contained an interesting ELO or Move factoid. And it did: "I know there are still quite a few shopping days until Christmas, but if you are already dreading the endless repetition of Wizzard's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day then don't come to Sutton Coldfield. Wizzard's lead singer, Roy Wood, grew up in the town and, so I'm told, can still regularly be spotted out and about, often in his band outfit and make-up." (??!?!??) Now, who came up with this one? The same person who added Adrian Ulysses to Roy's name? ;) ********** Subject: Re: Another Roy Wood Urban Myth? Well, remember years ago, when some loonie was passing himself off as Jeff Lynne, and passing bad checks in the process? Maybe this is something similar -- someone who gets their jollies out of dressing up like Wizzard-era Roy and strutting their stuff around his old hometown atChristmas. Actually there could be some truth in this guys - when I was in a town close to where Roy now lives I was told he is sometimes spotted "with a feather in his hair"!!!! - and he is always attached to his military jacket or coat! Absolutely, I have been telling the rest of the guys in "KISSTERIA" that for ages. Paul Stanley got "Firehouse" by re-writing "Fire Brigade", no doubt. He has admitted doing that with other songs like "Hotter Than Hell" being "All Right Now" and "She" being "Foxy Lady" Gene, Paul and Ace have all mentioned the Move as big influences along with The Beatles, The Who and Led Zep. ********** Subject: Re: Fire Brigade / Firehouse Date: Wed, 14 May 2003 02:20:38 -0700 From: "Joseph Davolt" >Absolutely, I have been telling the rest of the guys in "KISSTERIA" >that for ages. Paul Stanley got "Firehouse" by re-writing "Fire Brigade", >no doubt. Have ya read the liner notes from the KISS Box Set? Paul spells out exactly how it happened in the track commentary for "Firehouse". I don't recall exactly what is said, but I remember him saying that he used to listen to a radio show in New York that played the U.K. singles chart for that week, and heard a lot of great stuff through that program, and that one of his favorite groups that he heard on that show was The Move, and since he couldn't afford the 'expensive imports', he would try to remember what he could of the songs, and teach himself to play them. "Firehouse" was what he ended up with when he tried to do this with "Fire Brigade". Also, not only is "Hotter Than Hell" practically "All Right Now" played backwards, the bass interlude/solo from "All Right Now" ended up as the guitar solo in "Lick It Up"... Date: Tue, 13 May 2003 11:12:38 -0700 From: Richard Messum Very sad news, Noel Redding died yesterday at the age of 57. No cause of death was given. See http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/entertainment/3022817.stm Another candle has gone out. ********** Subject: The Move & Hendrix Date: Tue, 13 May 2003 11:50:30 -0700 From: Lynn Hoskins Very sad news about Noel Redding. Thanks for letting us know, Richard. I recently ran across an interview with Noel on the 'net in which he named his five favorite bands: The Byrds, The Small Faces, The Kinks, Foghat, The Move. For those who don't know, he was originally a guitarist, but switched to bass when he formed the Jimi Hendrix Experience with Jimi and Mitch Mitchell in 1966. The "Axis: Bold As Love" album featured the track "You Got Me Floatin'" with Roy, Ace and Trevor on backing vocals. Thought I'd look through the Move List archives for Hendrix discussions, including some that mentioned Noel. Here's what I came up with... - Roy said in an interview that his first recorded cello licks on 10538 Overture were basically just Jimi Hendrix guitar riffs. - From the book "Jimi Hendrix: The Ultimate Experience" by Johnny Black Quotes concerning the song "You Got Me Floatin'" and the Move's tour with Jimi during early 1967. (undated and unattributed) Chas Chandler (on "You Got Me Floatin'"): I never felt that any of us had ever really been into the song. In fact, we added other people's harmonies to the track because we didn't have any other ideas. Trevor Burton and Roy Wood were mates of Noel's (Noel Redding), and that's how they came in and sang on that. To me, it just wasn't one of [Hendrix's] best works. Noel Redding (on the November 1967 tour with the Move, Pink Floyd, the Nice, Eire Apparent, Outer Limits, and Amen Corner): Everybody used to hang out with everybody else. Us lot were really close with the Move. Trevor Burton...always used to travel with us, and, if I was running late, I'd travel with the Move. So, after the show, we'd all go to pubs together, get pissed, then attempt to get on the coach at the proper time. We'd miss the coach and have to get buses and trains. Ace Kefford (on the Harold Wilson postcard incident): Guys in black limos started following us. It was only later that we discovered they were from MI5. (Yikes!--S.M.) Tony Secunda: We'd come out of a show, and there would be this big limo parked across the road. It'd follow us to the greasy spoon, to the next gig, wherever we went. Jimi Hendrix was doing his nut, because he thought it was the FBI or the CIA or someone, coming after him. It was really bizarre. We'd say, "Jimi, why would they be after you?" and we were thinking maybe they wanted to send him to Vietnam, maybe this, maybe that, and he'd just go, "No, you don't understand, they're spooks [slang for undercover agents]. It's the secret service. They want to know what I know," like there was some huge conspiracy he was involved in, UFOs and alien carvings in the White House. He spun this out for hours, then he finally cracked up and said, "Man, you guys are so gullible." Noel Redding: I remember, when the Move were playing once, I rode a bicycle across the stage. Another time we put stink bombs under Bev Bevan's foot pedal. Roy Wood: The best thing I ever heard was Jimi Hendrix playing "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" after rehearsal once. - Richard Allinson interview with Roy: RA: You sang backing vocals for Jimi Hendrix? ROY: Yes it was a studio down at Barns and I was in the next studio doing some stuff with The Move and we'd just been on tour with Jimi Hendrix and he just needed a bit of vocal backing on the Axis: Bold as Love album, and he sort of dragged me on doing a bit on that and it was ok. RA: Did he play guitar on any of your albums? ROY: Unfortunately, no. - Ace's Top Ten Death Discs From August 2002 Record Buyer & Music Collector 10. 'HEY JOE' By THE JIMI HENDRIX EXPERIENCE "The Move toured with the one and only Jimi in 1967 and he and I had a lot of fun together after the shows. I was a big fan of Tim Rose and had all his albums. He was purported to have written 'Hey Joe'. Before joining Led Zeppelin, John Bonham was in the backing band when I saw Tim one night in Birmingham. I was over the moon! There, on stage, my best mate was drumming for Tim Rose. I couldn't believe it." - A book called The Jimi Hendrix Sessions: Complete Studio Recording Sessions 1963-1970. Here's what it says about "You Got Me Floatin": "Over the course of this long evening (Oct.3, 1967), progress was made on both "You Got Me Floatin" and "One Rainy Wish." Noel Redding made use of his Hagstrom eight-string bass with notable effect. In addition, Graham Nash (!!!), Roy Wood and Trevor Burton contributed back-up vocals." Said Hendrix manager, Chas Chandler: "We added other people's harmonies to the track because we didn't have any other ideas. Trevor Burton and Roy Wood came in because they were mates of Noel's, and that's how they came in and sang on that. To me, it just wasn't one of (Hendrix') best works." - 1994 Goldmine interview with Roy: Goldmine: Did you know that Jellyfish covers "I Can Hear The Grass Grow in concert? Roy Wood: No, I didn't know that. The best thing I ever heard was in the '60s. I heard Jimi Hendrix play "I Can Hear The Grass Grow" after a rehearsal, and it was brilliant (laughs). ... Goldmine: What are your recollections of touring with the Jimi Hendrix Experience? Roy Wood: I got pretty close to Jimi, actually. He was a very nice guy. I mean, apart from his drug problems and all that stuff he was a gentleman. He was a real polite sort of guy. He started having a lot of problems toward the end of the tour. He was going a bit deaf sticking his head in the speaker cabinets and all that sort of stuff. He was going a bit deaf so I volunteered to tune his guitars for him because I had to tune four of my own anyway, so it was very easy. I used to do his for him as well. Goldmine: Did you ever jam with Hendrix? Roy Wood: Yeah. I played bass with him once in a place in Switzerland. It was Hendrix on guitar. I was playing bass, Chris Wood was playing flute, Steve Winwood on organ and I can't remember who was on drums. It might have been Jim Capaldi. Goldmine: How did the Move come to sing backgrounds on "You Got Me Floating" from Hendrix's Axis: Bold As Love album? Roy Wood: That was myself and Trevor doing that. We happened to be in the studio next door and I think Noel Redding came around and said, "Do you fancy having a sing on this?" We just went and did it and it was great. ********** Subject: Re: Noel Redding R.I.P. It can be argued that the rhythm section of Noel Redding and Mitch Mitchell was the best in rock in the 1960s - few could have blended so well with Hendrix and his sonic explorations. Redding also was a very good interview - both in print and on TV (check out any Hendrix-related programming over the last 10 years and chances are that Noel contributed much anecdotal info). Another of my Roy Wood spotting de-lurks - found this on the www.queenonline.com website. Pretty good line up I'd say! Last night The Roger Taylor band performed at Billingsgate Market in London for the ARK Charity evening. He was joined by Roy Wood, Bob Geldof, Chris Thompson, Spike Edney and Brian May. After two songs from Thompson and four rattling horn-filled numbers from Roy Wood, Roger took to the stage. Dressed in all white Roger opted for three of Queen's "poppier" numbers in 'I Want To Break Free' and his two self penned tracks 'A Kind Of Magic' and 'Radio Ga Ga'. Geldof then hit the stage and ripped through a frankly barnstorming set of Irish folk rockers including 'Rat Trap' and 'Great Song Of Indifference' before being joined by Roger for a run through of The Who's 'The Kids Are Alright'. Brian then hit the stage for a few words before ripping into 'We Will Rock You' and inevitably 'Tie Your Mother Down'. Roger then left the drum stool for a roaring version of Led Zep's classic boogie rocker 'Rock N' Roll'. The gig was filmed by QOL and an edit will shortly be available here right here on the site. The full set list was as follows: Band Intro - Spike Davey's On The Road Again - Chris Thompson Blinded By The Light - Chris Thompson California Man - Roy Wood/Horns Fire Brigade - Roy Wood/Horns Boadicea - Roy Wood/Horns Blackberry Way - Roy Wood/Horns I Want To Break Free - Roger Taylor A Kind Of Magic - Roger Taylor Radio Ga Ga - Roger Taylor Great Song Of Indifference - Bob Geldof Mary On The 4th Form - Bob Geldof Rat Trap - Bob Geldof The Kids Are Alright - Bob Geldof/Roger Taylor (Drums) We Will Rock You - Brian May/Roger Taylor (Drums) Tie Your Mother Down - Brian May/Roger Taylor (Drums) Rock N Roll - Roger Taylor Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday - All I'm off on holiday on Saturday for a couple of weeks.
