May 20 1987 Dick Motta resigned as head coach. He was hired 7/16/80. Motta had a record of 267-307 (.465) in the regular season and 10-14 (.417) in the playoffs with Dallas from 1980-81 - 1986-87. Phoenix led 126-123 and Dirk Nowitzki missed a 3-pointer with 9 seconds left and Nash was immediately fouled and he hit both free throws to ice the game. Phoenix scored 19 points in overtime, setting the opponent playoff record for points in an overtime. Jason Terry had 36 points. Nowitzki had 28 points, 13 rebounds, and 6 assists in 51 minutes. Josh Howard had 21 points and 14 rebounds. Stackhouse had 19 points on 4-13 FG and 11-12 FT. Nash had 39 points including 5-8 3-pointers, 9 rebounds, and 12 assists. Shawn Marion had 38 points, including 11 points in overtime, and 16 rebounds. Stoudemire had 18 points and 8 rebounds. Keith Van Horn did not play due to a sprained left ankle (out for the rest of the playoffs). Joe Johnson (Pho) did not play due to a fractured orbital bone (out for the rest of the series).
