Dallas at Utah (January 9) The first quarter consisted of two big runs. Utah started the game shooting 8-9 FG to Dallas' 3-10 FG over the first 7 minutes and built up a 22-7 lead with 5:30 left. Lorenzo Williams got 2 quick fouls and did not return until the 2nd half. Popeye Jones, who had woke up with back spasms, played 6 minutes and did not return for the rest of the game - in fact he spent most of the second half in the locker room receiving treatment. 3 successive turnovers by Utah allowed Dallas to get back in the game with a 15-5 run. Utah was up 32-24 at the end of the quarter. Utah shot 64% FG in the quarter. Karl Malone had 10 points, John Stockton had 14 points including 2 3-pointers, Jamal Mashburn had 10 points. Utah's 2nd string was not shooting quite as well as the 1st. Roy Tarpley got his 3rd foul 4 minutes in to the quarter and sat with 4 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 blocks. The Mavs went on a mini-rally including 2 3-pointers by Morlon Wiley to pull within 39-37 with 7 minutes left. Utah countered by scoring the next 8 points. During that time, Bryon Russell got his 3rd foul and sat. Utah was up 51-45 at the half. Utah shot 57% FG and Dallas 40% FG for the half. Utah out-rebounded Dallas 22-16. Stockton had 18 points including 7-10 FG and 5 assists, Malone had 10 points including 5-10 FG and 6 rebounds, and Felton Spencer had 11 points and 4 rebounds. Jason Kidd had 8 points, 5 assists, and 2 rebounds, Jim Jackson had 10 points, and Mashburn had 12 points including 5-6 FT. Just call it the Jeff Hornacek Quarter. The correct phrase is On Fire. The Jazz started the quarter with a 9-2 run in the first 3 1/2 minutes. Hornacek connected on 3 3-pointers in building up a 19 point Utah lead. Their lead was 82-63. Hornacek had 17 points on 7-8 FG and 3-3 3-pointers in the quarter. Utah shot 11-18 FG to Dallas' 6-22 in the 3rd. Dallas wasn't ready to go home. Utah had built up a 20 point lead, but Dallas went on a 7-0 run to cut that to 13 points. Utah built up their lead again by four, but Dallas cut it back down to 13 at 92-79 with 6:19 left. They would get no closer. Utah won 106-90. What can you do when a team is hitting as well as Utah was. Karl Malone: "It was a a nice win for us because these guys don't quit. They're not the same Mavericks we're used to. They come out and play their butts off.
