We got another game on TNT! TNT has decided to air the Dallas at Milwaukee game on Tuesday, January 31. The start time of the game has been moved from 7:30 to 7:00 pm Central time. With currently 279 assists, Jason Kidd has broke the rookie assist record for the Mavs. Jamal Mashburn had the previous record at 266 from last season. [Remember, Derek Harper did not start his rookie season and had the previous record at 239.] Jim Jackson's 48 minutes in the Orlando game marked the 2nd time this season that he has played all 48 minutes and only the 6th time in Mavs history that a Mav played 48 minutes in a non-overtime game. Starting point guard Jason Kidd weighs 205 pounds; starting center Lorenzo Williams weighs 200 pounds. The residents of the city of Lewisville rejected the proposed 1/2 cent tax for funding a new sports arena. Thus, Lewisville is no longer a possibility for the Mavs future home. And the city council of Dallas jumped for joy with the pressure being removed and will most likely continue their slackered ways. Ron Carter (owner Donald Carter's son) said that if positive progress is not made with the city of Dallas by March 1 regarding the plans for building a new arena, the Mavs would look elsewhere. Trouble in Tarpleyville - and I don't know exactly what is going on. Prior to the players heading to the court for the Seattle game, Director of Player Personnel Keith Grant pulled Roy Tarpley aside and spent the entire first half talking to him. Tarpley was not dressed for the game and not scheduled to play. Apparently Tarpley expressed some of his frustration about things and Grant responded with some of his own comments. Afterwards, Grant "excused" Tarpley from the arena and Tarpley left. I've heard both that Grant ordered Tarpley to leave and had him escorted from the arena as well as that Grant just felt that it would look bad to have Tarpley come out after halftime and thought it would be better if he left. Grant also left at halftime - I've heard both that he just had a lot of thinking to due and that he was "visibly upset". Grant said, "I don't know what the next step is right now. I think the ball's in my court." Management had a 90 minute meeting Saturday morning - the only thing for sure I know they talked about is whether to placed Tarpley on IR or not and possible players to bring in on 10-day contracts. Talk about trading Tarpley has resurfaced, but trading him would be very difficult due to him being a base-year player (salary slot worth $764,000) and having a 6 year, $25.8 million contract. BUT, Grant has always maintained that Tarpley is very much a part of the Mavs future and has not stopped saying that. Tarpley is scheduled to meet with someone from his after care program Monday regarding some recent mood changes others have reported. He is also tested daily for drugs. Motta actually had some sympathetic comments regarding Tarpley and his situation: "He's not under a microscope. It's a telescope. Bigger than the Hubble. I think he's really uptight. I just hope he doesn't do something really stupid. This stuff is piling up on him." Tarpley was not at the Seattle game. New York at Dallas game (January 20) This was Derek Harper's home coming - his first visit to Dallas since being traded a year ago. He said it was the toughest game he ever had to prepare for as his game day schedule was so abnormal. He did not get much practice during the warm-ups as he keep going over to shake someone's hand, talk to various people, and saying hi to his former teammates. He got a nice, small ovation when he was introduced, but no where near as loud or long as it should have been. 1st Q: Both teams had a hot shooting first quarter, but Dallas had 5 turnovers to New York's 1 and New York was up 35-26. Jamal Mashburn had 9 points including 5-6 FT and 2 rebounds and Patrick Ewing had 13 points including 6-11 FG and 3 rebounds. John Starks shot 3-4 3-pointers in the quarter. New York shot 58% FG and Dallas 60% FG. 1 New York turnover lead to 2 Dallas points and 5 Dallas turnovers lead to 10 New York points. 2nd Q: The amazing play: Jim Jackson to Doug Smith who took it strong to the hole for a jam over Hubert Davis! It was the first time in 4 years that Doug has actually taken it strong _on_someone_ - not a finger roll. Then he followed that by blocking Anthony Bonner and Jackson nailed a 3 at the other end! Who was wearing Doug's uniform? JJ's 3 completed a 10-0 run to tie the game at 35-35 with 8:30 left. The game stayed close the rest of the quarter, with the Mavs having a 2-4 point lead most of the way. New York out-scored Dallas 6-3 over the final 2 1/2 minutes to lead 55-54. Donald Hodge had the funniest play of the game when he drove to the basket with his face aimed at the floor and drew a shooting foul. Monty Williams must have a death wish. First he dives into the front of the scorers table trying for a steal (and got a foul instead), then on the next play down the court, he goes running after a loose ball and crashes into the Mavs bench (the players did a good scattering act) and bangs his head on the trash can behind the bench. For the half, Ewing had 19 points, Mashburn 17 points, and Jackson 16 points. FG: Dallas 54% (19-35), New York 47% (20-43). FT: Dallas 15-17, New York 10-11. Rebs: Dallas 21, New York 13. Turnovers: Dallas 8, New York 4. 3rd Q: New York had an 7-0 run to build an 8 point lead at 66-58 with just under 7 minutes left. Jackson had the hot shooting hand and pulled the Mavs to with 71-68 with 3:53. New York closed the quarter with a 10-3 run to be up 81-71 after 3. Dallas shot 7-18 FG in the quarter. For the game, Jackson had 25 points including 10-15 FG, Mashburn 19 points and 5 rebounds, Ewing 26 points and 10 rebounds, and Starks 18 points including 4-6 3-pointers. New York was shooting 47% FG and Dallas 49% FG. Dallas was out-rebounding New York 29-25. 4th Q: The Mavs managed to cut New York's lead down to 95-91 with just under 4 minutes on a dunk by Jason Kidd - his first field goal attempt of the game. Mashburn threw the ball away on the Mavs' next possession and Hubert Davis nailed a long jumper to start an 11-2 to put New York up 101-91 with 1:45 left. Harper made his only field goal of the night (a 3-pointer) with 1:11 left. New York won 106-93. The broken record: we need a center. It is not surprising that the elite centers have had season high nights against the Mavs. And Ewing was no exception. He had 36 points including 15-26 FG and 12 rebounds. Harper's first night back was not a good one. He only had 7 points on 1-9 FG and 4-4 FT but also had 11 assists and played excellent D on Kidd. Jackson and Mashburn had good offensive nights with 28 points and 31 points respectively. Mashburn also had 7 rebounds and 6 turnovers. Has Kidd hit the rookie wall? He did not have a good night against Orlando and had an awful night vs New York, but he was not passing up open shots like he has in the past - he was given no open shots to take. Interesting to note that Perkins still keeps his off-season home in Dallas. First the ref bashing. They were awful, blowing calls both ways for both teams. Joe Forte was the main culprit of the 3. The 2nd quarter reffing was pathetic. 1st Q: It was a high scoring evenly matched first quarter. Seattle double-teamed Jamal Mashburn hard every time he touched the ball the entire game and his game suffered. The Mavs were up 31-30. Shawn Kemp had 8 points including 3-3 FG and 2 rebounds. Dallas was out-rebounding Seattle 15-8 and had 15 second chance points to Seattle's 3. Seattle shot 50% FG and Dallas 45% FG. 2nd Q: Seattle was up 36-35 with 7:30. It looked like the Mavs were going to get a brake when Kemp got his 4th foul on a phantom call 15 seconds later. Seattle decided that they did not need Kemp and went on a 12-2 run including 4 points by Kendall Gill and 3 by Schrempf to close the quarter. Seattle was up 56-43 at the half. Dallas' 12 points in the quarter was the season low for the team. FG: Seattle 43% (18-42), Dallas 33% (18-54). FT: Seattle 19-23, Dallas 6-8. Rebounds: Seattle 24, Dallas 29. Seattle had 7 turnovers and Dallas had 12 turnovers that lead to 14 Seattle points. Jim Jackson had 15 points and all 5 Seattle starters had at least 9 points. 3rd Q: Seattle opened the 3rd with a 28-13 run including 7 points by Kemp, 8 by Gill, and 6 by Gary Payton. The run ended with a 3-pointer by Perkins to put Seattle up 84-56 with 2:33 left. In the so what department, Kemp fouled out with less than a minute left in the quarter. Seattle shot 15-20 FG in the quarter. For the game Dallas was shooting 36% FG and Seattle 53%. 4th Q: Ah, it was garbage time, you don't need to hear about it.
