Golden State at Dallas (12/30) First, anyone who saw the game - either Mavs or Warriors fans - will probably agree that the officiating was very lousy and inconsistant. Second, thanks to Houston for wearing out Golden State the night before. The Warriors never seemed into the game and looked very tired. Jason Kidd was a rebounding maniac in the first quarter with something like 8 rebounds. He had 10 rebounds for the half, despite not playing most of the 2nd quarter. Dallas out-rebounded Golden State 36-20 in the half. Dallas went on an 19-2 run starting at 22-16 in the 1st quarter and ending at 41-18 with 6:16 left in the 2nd quarter. It was a blow-out from then on with the Warriors never able to find their legs. Or shooting touch. Golden State started the game by shooting 8-28 FG. The Mavs again committed 7 turnovers in the 1st quarter, but Golden State one-upped them by committing 8. As a surprise, Motta inserted bench warmer rookie Tony Dumas in the 2nd quarter. He actually played about 7 minutes in the quarter and nailed a 3, got a layup, and dished out a nice assist. The only excitement in the second half was wondering when Kidd would get his 10th point. We knew he was working towards a triple-double. He got a lay-up about 3 minutes into the 4th quarter to give him 9 points. Then he started passing up shots like crazy (driving me crazy). After missing a couple and passing up many more, he finally got a basket on a break-away with no one back. I thought he had the triple, but found out on the way home that he was 1 assist short. Motta told Kidd that he was one assist shy of the triple and asked him if he want back in. Kidd said no and that the W was the only thing that mattered, not individual highlights. Plus, he wanted his teammates to get the time. His 12 rebounds tied the club record for rebounds by a guard. Roy Tarpley led the Mavs with 22 points. It was only the second time this season that someone other than Jackson or Mashburn led the team in scoring. The Mavs also won this one without Jackson and Mashburn being their usual offensive punch. The two combined for about only 17 of the Mavs' 56 first half points and 31 of the 110 total. Donald Hodge fell off the bench. He was the only player who did not play. I haven't heard mention of an injury. He hasn't played in the past few games. Terry Davis returned for 3 minutes of garbage time. Rony Seikaly was really the only offensive force for Golden State. He was eating Lorenzo Williams alive and had 38 points on 12-14 FG (most up close) and 14-19 FT. Lorenzo fouled out. Golden State only had 10 players dressed. For the first time in 5 years, the Mavs enter a new year with a winning record (13-12). They also tied the number of wins they had for all of last season (13-69).
