Dallas at Milwaukee game (January 31) Jason Kidd remained in Dallas (in a hospital) due to dehydration and the flu. Morlon Wiley started in Kidd's place. 1st Q: The Mavs managed to build a small 5 point lead and maintain it most of the quarter. The lead fluctuated between 8 and 4 points. Dallas was up 15-10 with 6:02 left, 23-15 with 2:23 left and 28-21 after 1. Popeye Jones left the game during the quarter after receiving an inadvertent elbow to the mouth and had to have his lower front teeth pushed back in and got 11 stitches in his lip. He returned in the 2nd half. Jim Jackson had 14 points, Lorenzo Williams had 5 rebounds and 3 assists, and Vin Baker had 11 rebounds. Dallas was shooting 50% FG and Milwaukee 41% FG. 2nd Q: Dallas had a 10 to 5 point lead through most of the quarter. They were up 47-38 with 4:12 left in the quarter when Milwaukee scored the next 7 points including a steal and dunk by Johnny Newman to make it 47-45 at 2:12. Glenn Robinson made a running one-hander at the buzzer to tie the game at 52-52. Robinson had 18 points, Jackson 20 points including 8-10 FG and 4-4 FT, Mashburn 5 points on 2-6 FG, L Williams 5 points, and a bunch of Mavs with 4 points. Dallas was shooting 55% FG and Milwaukee 46% FG. Milwaukee had 3 turnovers and Dallas had 5 turnovers which led to 4 Milwaukee points. Milwaukee was out-rebounding Dallas 11-4 on the offensive glass and had 16 2nd chance points. 3rd Q: Both teams started the 3rd very sloppily. Robinson finally scored the first points of the quarter 2 minutes in. The next 2 minutes were pretty ugly with both teams having several turnovers and misses. Dallas was up 60-58 with 6:43 left. Milwaukee capitalized on 2 misses by Wiley and a turnover by Wiley on a sweet shot by Robinson and a 3-pointer by Todd Day to go up 65-62 with 4:05. A 3-pointer by Mashburn followed by a steal and jam by Mash gave Dallas a 73-67 lead at the 2 minute mark. Baker drained a 3-pointer at the buzzer to cut Dallas' lead to 79-74. Mashburn scored 11 points in the quarter. 4th Q: Milwaukee quickly got themselves into trouble by committing 5 quick (and one was very ticky-tacky) fouls and going into the penalty with Dallas up 83-78 with 9:37 left. Most of Dallas' points in the first half of the quarter came off of free throws. A quick, pretty 3-pointer by Robinson narrowed Dallas' lead to 89-85 with 7:26 left. Dallas was up 96-92 with 5:10 left and 99-96 with 3:43 left. Poor D by Mashburn and Robinson flew by him baseline for 2 and Baker got 2 on a break away and Milwaukee was up 100-99 with 2:48 left. An offensive foul by Lucious Harris and a 3-pointer by Robinson gave Milwaukee a 4 point lead with 2:20 left. Jackson got 2 driving. Marty Conlon missed and Popeye rebounded. Lorenzo Williams got 2 offensive rebounds and the put back and we were all tied up at 103-103 with 1:23 left. Conlon made 1 of 2 free throws and Harris made 2 of 2 to put the Mavs up 105-104 with 46 seconds. Conlon threw up a brick and Harris rebounded. Popeye missed the 18 foot baseliner as the clock was winding down and Conlon rebounded. It was Milwaukee's ball with 13 seconds left. Baker drained a 3-pointer with 2.8 seconds left to put the Bucks up by 2. Mashburn missed a 15-footer at the buzzer. Game over. Milwaukee 107, Dallas 105. Geez. Vin Baker had shot just 2-8 3-pointers prior to last night's game and made only 1 3-pointer last season. And he goes 2-2 against the Mavs. [Well, I like Baker and he doesn't get much attention so it was kinda bitter sweet (and the All-Star selection).] Baker had 20 points and 13 rebounds. Robinson had 14 points in the 4th. He definitely has a very sweet shooting style and a extremely quick release. [I'll up my list of sweet shooters to 3: Danny Manning, Glen Rice, and Glenn Robinson.] The Mavs were not defending him well and he lapped them up for 38 points on 17-28 FG. [Mash, you have got to learn to defend better!] The first half was Jim Jackson and the second Jamal Mashburn. JJ had 20 points in the 1st half and only 6 in the 2nd. Mash had 5 points in the 1st half and 19 in the 2nd. Mash was just not looking to shot in the 1st half and Johnny Newman did a good defensive job on Jackson in the 2nd half (plus Mashburn was not looking to pass in the 2nd half). Lorenzo Williams had a very nice game with 10 points (2 dunks off of nice feeds in the 1st quarter and the rest were put backs), 18 rebounds including 7 offensive, 6 assists (including a beauty from the top of the key down to Lucious under the basket), and 5 blocks. Popeye only had 1 rebound before going out with the injury and returned in the 2nd half to gather 11 more. His shots weren't falling, though, and he only had 6 points. Wiley and Harris did a nice job filling in for Kidd. Lucious made all 10 of his free throws (in fact the Mavs _only_ missed 1 of the 21 attempts!!!) and Morlon made 3 3-pointers. They combined for 2 assists, though. We got our first look at 10-dayer George McCloud. He did look fairly good for someone who had only been with the team for one day. Quotes: Vin Baker on the 3-pointer: "I didn't feel any pressure at all. I just wanted to get the shot off and get a good look." Jim Jackson: "We gave them the shot at the end. The 3-pointer by Baker is the shot we wanted them to take. He just made it." Jamal Mashburn: "Jason Kidd is a very important part of our team. His absence hurt us." Coach Dunleavy: "Tonight was a great performance for us in front of a national audience. I thought that Glenn Robinson had a great game. This might have been his most consistent performance." Glenn Robinson: "It feels good to play like I played. When Vinnie took the shot at the end of the game, my reaction was to hit the boards, but he made the shot and I was overjoyed." Baker, who was named as an All-Star reserve earlier in the day: "It's been a great day. I'm not going to sleep.
