Dallas at Minnesota (February 1) Jason Kidd was still in Dallas suffering from the flu and Morlon Wiley again started in his place. Doug West did not play and Donyell Marshall started in his place. A visit to the Mavs' home away from home was just what the doctor ordered for the slumping Mavs. The Mavs came into the game with an 8 game lossing streak. 3 of last year's 13 victories came in Minnesota. 1st Q: Dallas started the game out scoring Minnesota 12-0. Sean Rooks finally scored Minnesota's first 2 points 4 minutes into the game. Mashburn scored 10 points during the opening 18-2 run. Minnesota scored the next 7 points to get themselves somewhat into the game. Dallas was up 22-11 with 3:18 left in the quarter and was up 31-21 after 1. Dallas was shooting 57% FG and Minnesota 41% FG. Mashburn had 17 points on 5-7 FG including 3 3-pointers, Jim Jackson had 6 points, and Rooks had 7 points. 2nd Q: Dallas had built up a 16 points lead, but Minnesota cut that down to 11 points at 39-28 and the Mavs built that back up to 16 points at 44-28 with 5:38 left in the half. Dallas went on 9-0 run to take their largest lead at 53-30 with just under 3 minutes. George McCloud scored 8 points during that 14-2 run. It was 55-35 at the half. Mashburn and Jackson sat most of the quarter. For the half, Dallas was shooting 55% FG including 5-7 3-pointers and Minnesota was shooting 33% FG. Dallas was out-rebounding Minnesota 25-14. Jackson had 10 points, Mashburn 17 points, Popeye Jones 10 points and 9 rebounds, Christian Laettner 9 points, Rooks 7 points, and Isaiah Rider 5 points. Laettner and Rider were a combined 5-19 from the field. 3rd Q: Minnesota scored the first 6 points of the quarter, but Dallas managed to push their lead up to 61-41. Minnesota then scored the next 6 points. It was 65-49 Dallas with 6:53. Rider nailed a 3-pointer to cut it down to an 11 point lead. Minnesota had gone on a 8-2 run to cut Dallas' lead down to 10 points. 69-59 Dallas 3:25. After 3, Dallas was up 75-63. Laettner scored 10 points in the quarter. 4th Q: Dallas was up 81-69 with 7:30 left. Minnesota cut Dallas' lead down to single digits at 82-73 with 5:25 left. Mashburn made 2 free throws and drained a 3-pointer after 2 misses by Pat Durham to put the Mavs up 87-73. Rider responded with a 3 of his own. Popeye got an offensive rebound and the put back and Minnesota was called for 3 seconds on the other end. It was 89-76 with 4 minutes left. Dallas had a 16 point lead with 3 minutes left and the rest was just academic. Dallas 104, Minnesota 83. With 16 points and 20 rebounds (and a whopping 11 offensive [though 4 of them came on 1 play]), Popeye Jones recorded his 16th double-double of the season. How about George McCloud! I think he is trying to earn a permanent roster spot. He had 13 points in the game on 5-6 FG and 3-3 3-pointers. Add that to his 2-2 FG from Tuesday night and he is 7-8 FG during his two day stint with the Mavs. Quotes: Dick Motta: "Tonight, Mash got started real strong. When he's in high gear it's really hard to stop him." "He hit from outside, then came inside." Jim Jackson: "It feels good to win after losing eight. Being on the road, we had to get off to a good start. We knew in the second half they would make a run." Jamal Mashburn: "We played good defense and set the tone early. Then our reserves came in and didn't let up." Sean Rooks: "We're at home and we're just as good as Dallas and we should have won the game." Bill Blair: "They had two guys combine for 34 rebounds, and we had 34 total. There is nothing good to say about that." Blair: "In the first half, we were out there walking around like zombies. It's about respect for yourself and respect for your team." 1 2 3 4 Final 2FG 3FG FG% FT% Dallas 31 24 20 29 - 104 .492 .500 .494 .700 Minnesota 21 14 28 20 - 83 .434 .200 .381 .536 Halftime: 55-35 Dallas 3rd Q: 75-63 Dallas Technicals: none Refs: Jake O'Donnell, Jim Clark, Tommie Wood Attendance: 14,202 Dallas Reb Player Min FGM-FGA 3PM-3PA FTM-FTA PTS O-T Ast PF Stl TO Blk Jamal Mashburn 35 8-17 4-6 12-12 32 1-2 0 2 0 3 0 Popeye Jones 39 8-18 0-0 0-0 16 11-20 4 4 1 2 1 Lorenzo Williams 47 3-4 0-0 2-6 8 3-14 2 2 2 4 4 Jim Jackson 40 9-22 0-2 5-6 23 2-3 8 1 0 4 0 Morlon Wiley 18 0-2 0-2 0-0 0 0-3 1 3 0 0 0 Doug Smith 10 1-2 0-0 1-2 3 1-5 0 1 0 0 0 Lucious Harris 30 3-4 0-1 1-4 7 0-2 3 4 1 1 0 George McCloud 13 5-6 3-3 0-0 13 1-3 0 0 0 1 0 Tony Dumas 8 1-2 0-0 0-0 2 0-1 2 0 0 0 0 Totals 240 38-77 7-14 21-30 104 19-53 20 17 4 15 5 Minnesota Reb Player Min FGM-FGA 3PM-3PA FTM-FTA PTS O-T Ast PF Stl TO Blk Christian Laettner 38 9-20 0-2 8-10 26 5-11 4 4 3 2 1 Donyell Marshall 35 4-11 1-4 0-0 9 2-5 0 3 1 0 0 Sean Rooks 34 6-10 0-0 1-4 13 2-4 2 3 0 1 3 Winston Garland 29 3-5 0-1 1-6 7 1-2 4 1 1 1 0 Isaiah Rider 40 7-24 3-12 0-0 17 2-4 5 2 0 4 1 Pat Durham 21 2-6 0-1 2-4 6 1-2 1 5 2 2 0 Howard Eisley 19 0-3 0-0 2-2 2 1-1 1 2 0 0 1 Charles Shackleford 12 1-2 0-0 1-2 3 1-2 0 2 0 1 0 Greg Foster 12 0-3 0-0 0-0 0 2-3 0 2 0 0 0 Totals 240 32-84 4-20 15-28 83 17-34 17 24 7 11 6 patricia
