Dallas at Washington (February 21) Washington activated Rex Chapman from IR prior to the game. The 1st quarter started with Dallas taking a small lead and Washington playing catch-up. Dallas was up 8-6 in 9:30 left and Scott Skiles had all 6 points for Washington. A 3-pointer by Jamal Mashburn and a 3-pointer by Chris Webber left the score at 15-13 Washington with 6:30 left. A tip-in by Lorenzo Williams ended an 8-2 run to put the Mavs up 21-17. The teams traded leads and ties over the next few minutes. Lucious Harris nailed a 3-pointer to put the Mavs up 28-25 after 1. There were 7 ties in the quarter. Webber had 11 points and Lorenzo had 8 rebounds. Dallas shot 55% FG. Morlon Wiley started off the scoring in the 2nd quarter with a 3-pointer. Calbert Cheaney answered with a 3 of his own. The teams traded leads again as the game stayed close. Washington was up 38-37 with 7:19 left as Dallas was only shooting 4-10 FG for the quarter. Washington went on a 5-0 run. Webber picked up his 3rd foul with 6:10 left and sat for the rest of the half. Washington continued their run and scored 10 more points to go up 53-37 with a little over 3 minutes left. Jim Jackson finally scored and ended a 5 minute period in which the Mavs did not score. The next time down the court, Jason Kidd went down with a severely sprained left ankle and left for the game. Washington was up 53-39 with 55 seconds left. At the half, Washington 61, Dallas 43. Washington had out- scored Dallas 36-15 in the 2nd quarter. Washington was shooting 58% FG and Dallas 40% FG. For the half, Mashburn shot 2-8 FG, Jackson had 14 points, Popeye Jones had 6 points, Lorenzo had 10 rebounds, and Lucious Harris had 9 points. Webber had 11 points and 4 rebounds, Juwan Howard had 10 points, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists, Gheorghe Muresan had 10 points on 5-5 FG in 14 minutes, and Cheaney had 9 points. The Bullets had built up their largest lead of 74-53 with 6:19 before Dallas decided that the game really wasn't over. Washington was up 80-58 when Dallas went on a 17-2 run to close out the quarter. 82-75 Washington. Jackson had 14 points in the quarter and Dallas out-scored Washington 32-21 in the 3rd. Harris got 2 to cut Washington's lead down to just 82-77. Both teams played poorly for a little bit and Washington was up 88-81 with 6:45 left. Washington managed to keep a 7 to 5 point lead over the next 2 minutes and was up 92-87 with 4:30 left. After Anthony Tucker only made 1 of 2 free throws, Washington was up 95-91 with just under 3 minutes left. Jackson got 2 points off a goal tending call on Webber. Lorenzo tipped the ball, the Mavs ran, Mashburn missed, but Harris was there to tip in the miss to tie the game at 95-95 with 2:25 left. Webber nailed a 20-footer and Jackson made 2 free throws to keep the game tied at 97-97 with 1:10 left. Webber missed and Jackson rebounded. Popeye fed Jackson for the layup to give Dallas' there first lead since early in the 2nd quarter at 99-97 with 41 seconds left. Doug Overton tried to pass the ball to Webber, but Popeye stole the ball. Mashburn made 1 of 2 free throws. 100-97 Dallas 24.9 seconds left. Cheaney missed a 3-pointer and the ball went out of bounds off of Webber. Jackson was fouled with 10 seconds left and made both free throws. Howard missed a 3-pointer, Jackson rebounded, but Overton stole the ball. Webber missed a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Dallas 102, Washington 97. All hail Jim Jackson. He scored 30 of his 44 points in the 2nd half and had 16 points in the 4th quarter, including 8 points in the last 2:40. He shot 17-31 FG and 10-10 FT and had 10 rebounds and 6 assists. Role of assistant hero goes to Lucious Harris who had a career high 25 points including 10-13 FG while subbing for the injured Kidd. The amazing thing is, the Mavs made this great comeback without Kidd, with Mashburn having a lousy game (8 points, 3-11 FG), and Popeye having hurt his back in the 3rd quarter (he left midway through the 3rd, but did return in the 4th and played in pain). Washington is an incredible 1-4 when they have lead by 15 points or more. Quotes: Jim Jackson: "Popeye made the big play with the steal at the end, that did it for us." Jackson: "I got a lot of points in transitions, but it was a total team thing for us. We were down by 18 and Jason Kidd was hurt. For a young team this does a lot for our confidence." Dick Motta: "One of our best wins of the season. We just pecked away at them in the second half. We played good in the first half, but just didn't hit." Jim Lynam: "I think you have to say this is our worst loss of the season. Discouraging to have control of the game, score 61 points in the first half only to lose is a frustrating feeling." Juwan Howard: "To be up 20 points and blow it hurts. Teams are finding ways to win the close games against us.
