San Antonio at Dallas (February 3) I was kind of weary of this game since we had beaten the Spurs twice this season already - both times in the Alamodome. The Mavs started the first quarter really well and had built up an 18-10 lead midway through the quarter. Dallas was up 23-17 when San Antonio went on a 13-2 run to end the quarter and be up 30-25. Both teams shot 43% FG and San Antonio was out-rebounding Dallas by about 9. The 2nd quarter got ugly for the Mavs. Their shooting went south, the Spurs D was up, and the Spurs were shooting lights out. San Antonio was up 42-37 with 6:20 left when Lorenzo Williams picked up his 3rd foul. The Spurs then went on to out-score Dallas 16-8 and go up 58-45 at the half. Dallas shot 21% (4-19) FG in the 2nd and the Spurs shot 58% FG. For the half, Dallas was shooting 33.3% (14-42) and the Spurs 49% (24-49). Dallas shot 15-20 FT and San Antonio 10-14. The Spurs were out-rebounding Dallas 30-20. 5 Spurs' turnovers lead to 6 Dallas' points and 4 Dallas turnovers lead to 6 Spurs' points. Dennis Rodman had 0 points and 11 rebounds, Sean Elliott had 14 points including 6-9 FG and 5 rebounds, David Robinson had 13 points and 7 rebounds, Avery Johnson had 6 points and 7 assists, and Willie Anderson had 9 points including 4-6 FG. Jamal Mashburn had 14 points, Jim Jackson had 15 points, Popeye Jones had 2 points and 6 rebounds, Lo Williams had 4 points and 5 other Mavs had 2 points. San Antonio went on a 14-6 run early in the quarter to go up 72-53 with 8:06 left. Vinnie Del Negro had 7 points during that run. The Mavs managed to cut the Spurs' lead down to 16-13 points several times, but the Spurs scored the final 7 points of the quarter over 30 seconds, including a steal in the backcourt and 3-pointer by Del Negro at the buzzer, to go up 89-67 after 3. Most of the starters sat for the start of the 4th, and remained seated through the quarter. Normally I don't go details for garbage time, but this was actually kind of fun. Tony Dumas was just having a ball. It looked like Chuck Person started jawing with him, so he started lighting it up. He had a 3-pointer, a driving in-your-face jam, and a successful alley-oop jam (the Mavs are normally unsuccessful at these). He finished with a career high 16 points. The other highlight from the 4th was Morlon Wiley's attempted alley-oop to Lucious Harris - it went in. With a big grin on his face, Morlon raised his hands indicating the 3-pointer (he was behind the 3-point line when he attempted the pass). The bench warmers managed to cut it down to misleading 114-103 victory by San Antonio (it was definitely a blow-out). Quotes: Sean Elliott: "We wanted to come out and play hard tonight. The first two times we played them, we took them too lightly. Tonight, it was nice to sit on the bench in the 4th quarter with a big lead." Vinnie Del Negro: "We really wanted to be aggressive tonight and keep our winning streak alive." David Robinson: "They had a little bit of fire and a little bit of energy and looked to be confident. It was just tough for them to sustain that kind of an effort." Robinson: "They showed some energy early, but in the 2nd quarter our defense was suffocating. We took things real serious tonight." Brian Hill: "Our defense was really special. I was thrilled with our defense. We really helped each other and took them out of their offense." Dick Motta: "They were really ready. They were really hot. They are just too much for us. We started out good and they just weathered our storm." Motta on Rodman: "He's unreal. He just changes games. If they play like this and they don't have injuries, they've got as good a team as anyone. Who am I to say? But if Rodman will stay and play like he is now for the duration of the season, they've got a hell of a shot." Motta on Kidd, who returned after a 2 game absence due to the flu: "I still don't think his energy is there." Motta: "We're not going to overload the minutes of the 3 Js anymore. We got what we wanted. We got the enthusiasm back (within the team and with the fans) and showed the guys they're competitive in this league." 1 2 3 4 Final 2FG 3FG FG% FT% San Antonio 30 28 31 25 - 114 .500 .500 .500 .800 Dallas 25 20 22 36 - 103 .413 .417 .414 .765 Halftime: 58-45 San Antonio 3rd Q: 89-67 San Antonio San Antonio's largest lead: 101-75 6:05 4th Dallas' largest lead: 18-10 6:05 1st Dallas' last lead: 23-21 2:23 1st Q Lead changes: 2 Technicals: Cummings 11:36 4th, San Antonio illegal D 4:19 4th Refs: Jess Kersey, Don Vaden, Mike Callahan Attendance: 17,502 (sell-out) San Antonio Reb Player Min FGM-FGA 3PM-3PA FTM-FTA Pts O-T Ast TO F Stl Blk Dennis Rodman 28 1-4 0-0 0-0 2 8-20 3 1 0 0 1 Sean Elliott 24 7-11 0-1 2-2 16 3-5 2 0 2 0 0 David Robinson 29 8-17 0-0 4-6 20 4-9 3 2 3 1 4 Avery Johnson 35 6-13 0-0 0-2 12 0-2 14 2 0 2 0 Vinnie Del Negro 33 7-13 2-2 0-0 16 0-5 3 1 4 2 0 Willie Anderson 13 5-8 0-0 1-1 11 0-0 1 3 4 1 0 Chuck Person 24 1-7 1-3 0-0 3 0-1 1 1 5 0 0 Terry Cummings 14 4-5 0-0 5-5 13 1-5 0 1 3 0 0 Doc Rivers 8 0-0 0-0 0-0 0 0-1 3 1 2 0 0 J.R.
