The Mavs signed rookie Loren Meyer (#21 pick in the draft) to a 3 year contract worth $1.92 million. GM Norm Sonju also announced at Meyer's press conference that both George McCloud and Lorenzo Williams will be in Dallas today to sign contracts. McCloud's contract will be two years guarenteed and Lorenzo's is a 1 year deal worth over $1 million. Lorenzo was one of the biggest bargins last year as he only earned the league minimum $200,000 and started most of the season. With those three players signed, the Mavs will have 14 players under guaranteed contract going into training camp. The odd man out is probably Donald Hodge, who is in the last year of his contract and the Mavs have expressed their willingness to eat the final year. The other man out is still under question. If someone is injured before November 3 (the day active rosters must be reduced to 12), a player could go on IR to start the season (the Mavs rarely use IR to store players). Terry Davis has two years left on his contract and owner Donald Carter probably wouldn't want to eat both years. The more likely senerio is a trade for a draft pick and/or player that would immediately be waived. This, of course, points towards Roy Tarpley. With aqcuiring Dennis Rodman, Chicago is no longer interested in Tarpley. Talks with Indiana half cooled some, but coach Larry Brown would still like Tarpley. Indiana is not too keen on taking on Tarpley's full 5 year deal and would like to give Dallas bodies back (which we don't need). I still hear the Lakers mentioned occassionally, but no info as to how interested they really are. The lack of roster spots available was reflected in the Mavs' rookie/free agent camp. Only rookie Cherokee Parks and free agents Brian Hopgood (6-9 forward from Oklahoma City University), Marcus Grant (6-6 forward from Mississippi State), and Brian Fair (6-3 guard from Connecticut) participated in the camp. 17 players are scheduled to participate in training camp, which starts tomorrow. I assume that the 3 free agents above are the 3 players not under contract that are invited to camp. Don't forget that the evening training camp sessions at Moody Coliseum are open to the public. The evening sessions run from 6-8 pm October 6-12 and 6:30-8:30 pm October 15-17. [There are pre-season games October 13 and 14.] Also, I've got an account with a provider that has a real web server, so I've moved my Mavs stuff there and it can now be reached at http://www.dfw.net/~patricia/mavs.html patricia
