Greg Buckner suffered a strained ligament in his left foot during last Thursday's practice. He did play in the Houston game, but aggravated the injury and did not play in the Orlando or Miami game. It is not known if he will be available for Friday's game vs Golden State. Houston at Dallas (March 3) The game stayed close in the 1st quarter with neither team holding more than a 7 point lead. Dallas led 18-17 with 3 minutes remaining and Houston scored the next 8 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Walt Williams to take a 25-18 lead with 44 seconds left. Houston led 27-20 after 1. Dallas scored the first 7 points of the 2nd quarter to tie the game at 28-28 with 9:35 to go, but Houston answered with the next 7 points. Houston held a single digit lead for most of the rest of the quarter. A 3-pointer by Dirk Nowitzki with 32 seconds left gave Dallas a 48-47 lead at the half. Michael Finley had 10 points in the 2nd quarter and Hakeem Olajuwon had 9 points. The game remained close in the 3rd quarter. Houston led 68-67 with 4:35 remaining and Houston went on a 9-2 mini-run to go up 77-69 with 1:45 left. A bucket by Juwan Howard was all that was scored over the end of the quarter. Houston led 77-71 after 3. Olajuwon had 12 points in the 3rd quarter. Houston led 81-74 with 9:50 remaining and Dallas went on a 9-2 mini-run to tie the game at 83-83 with 6 minutes left. Olajuwon converted the 3-point play and Nowitzki hit 2 3-pointers to give Dallas a 89-86 lead with 3:35 to go. Dallas led 94-91 with 1:20 left on a jumper by Finley. Steve Francis drove to the basket for a layup with a minute to go and Finley hit 2 free throws with 52 seconds left and Dallas led 96-93. Francis turned the ball over with 41 seconds to go, Dallas missed with 21 seconds left, and Francis missed a 3-pointer with 13 seconds left. Houston intentionally fouled Finley and he hit both free throws to put Dallas up 98-93 with 12 seconds remaining. Francis slammed the ball home and Houston intentionally fouled Steve Nash with 7 seconds left. Nash went to the line grinning - hitting both would give Dallas 100 points and, thus, the fans get free chalupas. 4 games prior, Nash went to the line with Dallas at 98 points and missed both chalupa free throws. He redeemed himself and hit both free throws to clinch the game. Dallas won 100-95. It was a tightly fought game and Houston got distracted in the 4th quarter while Dallas held steady. Houston shot only 6-20 FG in the 4th (they shot slightly over 50% FG for the first 3 quarters). Dallas out-scored Houston 29-18 in the 4th. Dirk Nowitzki led the way for Dallas in the 4th with 11 points and Michael Finley had 9 points. Nowitzki finished with 26 points, 13 rebounds, and 5 blocks. Finley had 27 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, 4 steals, and 3 blocks. Steve Nash had his circus shots going and had 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists. Juwan Howard chipped in 19 points including 8-11 FG, but only 3 rebounds. Hakeem Olajuwon had a monster game in his last trip to Reunion Arena with 27 points on 10-16 FG and 7-13 FT and 13 rebounds. Steve Francis had 21 points, 10 rebounds, and 4 steals. Maurice Taylor had 15 points and 5 rebounds and Moochie Norris had 15 points including 6-7 FG. Cuttino Mobley missed the game due to a sprained right ankle. I saw some pretty bad calls and non-calls for Dallas, but wasn't going to saying anything about it as I saw how nuts Rudy Tomjanovich was going at times during the game and figured the bad calls must be balancing out. Then I read the Houston paper's article about the game and all the complaining the Rockets did about the officiating and it ticked me off. Reality check, Houston: Dallas was called for 20 fouls and Houston for 17 - and 2 of those were intentional in the last 12 seconds of the game. Houston shot 16-26 FT and Dallas only 15-17 including 4 in the last 12 seconds [make their free throws and they win the game]. Juwan Howard had to leave the game (and did not return) when he left got his 5th foul just 2 minutes into the 4th quarter. For every call the Rockets complain about, I can counter with a bad one for Dallas. Officiating did not decide this game. Quotes Nelson: "I feel Houston is going to be a playoff team. They're going to beat out somebody and I just hope it isn't us. That's why this was such a big game." Nelson on Maxwell playing 22 minutes: "I needed defenders. I didn't expect going into this game he would play more than 10 minutes. Defensively I needed him in there, and he came through. He's going to be a real good addition to our club." Michael Finley: "We found a way to win. If we continue to do that, this will be an even more prosperous season." Finley: "We haven't had too much success against them, but tonight in the 4th quarter, we took it upon ourselves and we found a way to win." Finley: "It was a great team effort. We didn't put our heads down. We knew that there was a lot of ballgame left to be played and defensively we picked it up and it came down to making shots and we made them and they missed them." Dirk Nowitzki: "They made it a great ballgame, but I think we knew we had to get this one and that's how we approached it." Nowitzki: "I think the defense in the 4th quarter was just great. There will always be nights when you can't make your shots, so it's all about defense and that's what won us the game today." Vernon Maxwell: "At first I was tired, but I got my second wind. I don't know where it came from. I need more legs for my jump shot. That will come. The most important thing is we got some key stops in the 4th quarter." Rudy Tomjanovich: "We didn't follow our game plan defensively, a couple times in the first half and several times in the second half and they stung us." Steve Francis: "I think our shooting was terrible, but our free throws really knocked us out of it." Francis: "We beat ourselves in the 4th quarter. That killed us." Francis: "We gave the game away. I thought we out-played them. But late in the game, in the 4th, when you go 6-20 you're not going to win like that." Francis: "It's tough. Late in the game I lost the ball and that hurt us. But it's tough when you play well most of the game and lose it down the stretch. That hurts." Hakeem Olajuwon on Dirk Nowitzki's open looks: "When a guy breaks to the basket, of course you go to help. It's natural instincts for a shot blocker to leave his man." Olajuwon on Nowitzki: "He made some big plays, especially when he is breaking to the basket. He also shot outside well, so in that kind of situation you just have to wait it out." Maurice Taylor: "We beat ourselves. We didn't play the way we need to. When they doubled, we tried to beat it or tried to shoot over it and didn't swing the ball quick the way we have been. We played the way we were early in the season. They didn't do anything to stop us." Shandon Anderson on his foul on Finley with 52 seconds left: "I didn't think I got him. The guy who called it was running from behind. I asked, 'Why didn't the guy on the baseline, right there, call it?' [Finley] screamed, though, and sometimes that works." Dallas led 14-9 with 5:15 left and Orlando went on a 13-3 run to go up 22-17 with a minute remaining. Orlando led 24-19 after 1. Juwan Howard had 9 points including 6-8 FT. Orlando shot 10-25 FG and Dallas shot 5-19 FG. Orlando led 28-21 with 10:15 left and Dallas finally started clicking some and scored the next 10 points to go up 31-28 with 6:15 left. The game stayed close the rest of the quarter and Dallas led 47-44 at the half. Dallas had balanced scoring in the quarter as 6 Mavs scored while Tracy McGrady (11 points) and Pat Garrity (9 points) had all of Orlando's points in the quarter. Dallas held small single digit leads for most of the 3rd quarter. Dallas led 69-63 with 2 minutes left and collapsed over the end of the 3rd. Orlando scored 3 points, Shawn Bradley was called for a technical with 25 seconds remaining and Garrity hit the free throw, Cory Alexander made a layup with 12 seconds left and was fouled, he missed the free throw but Orlando got the rebound, and Alexander got another layup. Orlando led 71-69 after 3. Orlando opened the 4th quarter with a 13-2 run to go up 84-71 with 6:15 left and that was basically game as Dallas had no life in them and Orlando led in the teens the rest of the way. Orlando won 95-81. Yuch. With 82 games, every once in a blue moon you are going to have a game like this. The best thing to do about one of these stinkers is to put it behind you and forget about it. The Mavs only played 1 quarter decently - the 2nd. The only thing that kept this game from being a complete blowout was that Orlando was not playing that well either. And they really stunk it up in the 4th with only 12 points including 2-16 FG. For the game, Dallas shot 34.7% FG and Orlando shot 42.9% FG. I'll take my own advice and stop talking about this game. Quotes Doc Rivers: "That was a wild basketball game. Dallas has so many different lineups they use, so it forced us into combinations that we weren't accustomed to using. But our guys responded. I thought our defense was terrific. If we play defense like that every night, we're going to win a lot of games." Rivers on Dallas: "This is the 4th leading team in terms of scoring in the NBA. If you can play defense like that every night, then you can win a lot of basketball games." Rivers: "Cory was terrific tonight. He's been around long enough now to know our offense. He was big for us. But I thought his defense was just as good as his offense. I don't know if he can do that every night, but he did it today." Cory Alexander: "I can help this team win games. Tracy and Darrell are going to carry the load, but I can help now." Alexander: "We were kind of tired and I was pretty much the only one that was fresh. I just wanted to come out and see if I could give the guys a lift, basically." Alexander on the end of the 3rd quarter surge: "It gave us a quick lift. Small things lift the team. We were able to get the lead and it just sparked." Donn Nelson: "This was an ugly game from start to finish. We just didn't play well offensively all night, and, when we struggled offensively, it carries over into our defense. We pushed a number of buttons, and nothing seemed to be the answer. We just weren't really in it the entire game." [Don Nelson did not talk to the press after the game.] Nelson: "We didn't deserve to win it. We were out-played, out-hustled, and out-energized." Nelson: "Shots we normally make in our sleep we couldn't get to go down. But we have no excuses. No excuses, at all." Nelson: "We just didn't play well offensively all night. And when we struggle offensively, it carries into our defense. We pushed a number of buttons and nothing seemed to be the answer. 4 out of our 5 starters were 11 of 50. We only had 15 assists." Steve Nash: "I think what killed us is they scored 8 points in the last minute of the 3rd quarter. We went from up 6 to down 2, and you cannot allow that to happen. They had the momentum. We felt like it was our game. They got some breaks and took control of it." Juwan Howard: "They wanted it more than we did down the stretch. You could see that. Our turnovers hurt us, and so did the energy they had. We couldn't match it." Howard: "I think we lost the lead because of our defense, and I would say, turnovers. Once that happened, they went down the other end and scored. They wanted it more than we did down the stretch. I thought we should have won the game no matter what." Dallas led 15-14 with 4:50 left and went on a 13-2 run to go up 28-16 with 28 seconds remaining. Anthony Mason hit 2 free throws and Dallas led 28-18 after 1. Dallas was red hot shooting 13-18 FG while Miami shot 6-20 FG. Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points. Dallas cooled off the in the 2nd quarter, but still held single digit leads. A 3-pointer by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 32-24 lead with 9 minutes to go, but Miami scored the next 8 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Bruce Bowen, to tie the game at 33-33 with 5 minutes remaining. Dallas answered with the next 7 points and continued with their single digit lead the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 46-40 at the half. Nowitzki had 17 points and Mason had 11 points and 10 rebounds. Miami scored 6 straight points in the 3rd to tie the game at 54-54 with 6:45 left. The game stayed really close the rest of the quarter with neither team holding more than a 3 point lead. Dallas led 67-66 after 3. Brian Grant was a mad-man in the quarter with 14 points on 7-10 FG. Mason (8 points) and Bowen (4 points) were the only other Heat players to score in the 3rd quarter. The teams started the 4th quarter slow and a dunk by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 69-66 lead with 10:45 to go. A.C. Green scored the next 6 points to give Miami a 72-69 lead with 9 minutes left. Michael Finley swished a 3-pointer a foot behind the top of the arc to put Dallas up 80-76 with 5:15 to go. Mason slammed the ball home with 5:30 left, but Finley found Nowitzki wide open in the right corner and he drained the 3-pointer. Mason missed and Finley drained another 3-pointer a foot behind the arc on the left elbow and Dallas led 86-78 with 3:25 remaining. Dallas led 89-82 with 1:15 left. Hardaway turned the ball over with a minute left and Finley missed with 41 seconds remaining. Miami quickly pushed the ball up court and Grant dunked the ball with 35 seconds to go. Steve Nash was intentionally fouled with 31 seconds remaining to give Dallas a 91-84 lead. Mason got a layup with 25 seconds left and Nash hit 2 more free throws less than a second later. Bowen missed and Dallas rebounded and ran the clock out. Dallas won 93-86. What a tough, good game. The largest lead in the 2nd half for Dallas was only 8 points and for Miami was 3 points. Hate to pick on a negative in such a good win, but thank goodness the Mavs were really hitting their shots 'cause they would have been dead other wise. The Mavs would put up a shot and, with few exceptions, no one would be around to even try for an offensive rebound. The Mavs had a grand total of 2 offensive rebounds. One the positive, the Mavs did shoot 54.5% FG including 7-14 3-pointers while Miami shot 43.2% FG. The stats don't show it, but the player of the game was Shawn Bradley. Bradley played a season high 42 minutes and majorly affect Miami's offense. Yes, Brian Grant did catch fire against him in the 3rd quarter, but otherwise Bradley was great. Bradley had only 4 points (1-2 FG, 2-2 FT), but had 14 points, 9 blocks, and only 2 fouls. The other key was Steve Nash. Once he started driving and making his circus shots, the Miami defense faultered with indecision on when to help out and when to stick with outside shooters. Nash had 19 points including 7-10 FG and 7 assists. Dirk Nowitzki was high man with a lot of open looks and 29 points including 10-16 FG and 5-8 3-pointers and 14 rebounds. Juwan Howard had a strong game with 16 points and 14 rebounds. Michael Finley's 3-pointers were extremely important to the win and he finished with 16 points. Miami's guards were completely off, shooting a combined 5-28 FG. Starter Tim Hardaway only had 5 points including 1-9 FG and starter Dan Majerle had 3 points including 1-7 FG. It would have been a blowout without the strong performances of Brian Grant (23 points and 7 rebounds) and Anthony Mason (25 points and 15 rebounds). Bruce Bowen (16 points) was the only other Heat player in double digits. The win was Dallas' 19th road victory of the season. The most the Mavs have ever won on the road in a season is 20. It was also the first win in Miami since 1990. Dallas has no more Eastern Conference road games remaining. And one of the most amazing stats from this season: Dallas is 32-1 when leading after 3 quarters. The 2 overtime loss in New York is the only loss. Quotes Don Nelson: "The key baskets definitely were Finley's [3-point] baskets. Dirk made some, too. The bottom line was, down the stretch, we made some 3s and we guarded their 3s." Nelson on Bradley: "He was huge for us. I needed Shawn in there to guard the rim. We stayed with him because that was our game plan." Dirk Nowitzki: "They messed up on their rotations a few times and I was wide open." Juwan Howard: "This is a big win. We felt we should have won the ball game in Orlando. But to come in here in Miami and win it on their home court, this is an impressive win for us. Now, we've just got to keep on winning." Howard: "I've been scoring, but I hadn't been rebounding. Coach told me when I first got to Dallas that that's something that the team needs a lot is rebounding, and I was really down on myself because I know I'm a better rebounder than what I've shown lately for this team. I've been focusing on that. I start every game by thinking to myself, 'Rebounds.'" Shawn Bradley on his good defensive game and blocks: "You can tell when you feel your timing is right. Having defensive timing is the same as having an offensive groove." Pat Riley on Dallas' consecutive 3-pointers in the 4th: "For all intents and purposes, that was too hard to overcome." Riley on Nowitzki: "We kept telling our guys, 'Make someone else shoot the ball.'" Riley: "It was terrible. Our guards could not make a shot. I would say 20 of those shots were not bad shots. We got a lot of good looks. It was just contagious tonight." Riley on Bradley: "Bradley is always going to be in an illegal zone. Whoever he's playing, you have to spot him up in the corner." Riley on missing Eddie Jones, who separated his shoulder in Miami's previous game: "I don't think it affected us. We just ran into a very talented team. They played well and shot the ball well. They scrambled enough to allow their size to be a factor." Brian Grant: "We should have beaten them. We missed a ton of shots in the 1st half and got messed up in our rotations in the 2nd half. Dirk Nowitzki had wide open shots." Grant on Bradley: "You try to go right at him. He's catching your wrist and hand, and that's usually a foul, but not tonight." Anthony Mason: "We were careless and didn't have enough effort." Dan Majerle: "It was just one of those games. We didn't make enough shots. I shot bad and Tim shot bad." Bruce Bowen on Nowitzki: "We didn't do a good job of crowding him. If you look at his shots tonight, it wasn't like he was breaking down people and then putting up 3-pointers. He was spotting up in the corner. It was a total lapse on our behalf trying to find him."
