San Antonio at Dallas Game 4 (May 12) The game stayed close for the first half of the 1st quarter with both teams holding small leads, as Dallas finally found their shooting touch, and there were 6 ties. Dallas led 22-20 with 4:20 left and scored the next 8 points to take a 30-20 lead with 1:50 remaining. Antonio Daniels drained a short jumper at the buzzer and Dallas led 32-24 after 1. Dirk Nowitzki had 10 points, Juwan Howard had 9 points, and Daniels had 9 points. Dallas scored the first 9 points of the 2nd quarter to take a 41-24 lead with 9:30 to go. Shawn Bradley picked up his 3rd foul with 6:15 left and sat for the rest of the half. Dallas led 51-36 with 5:30 left and the Spurs closed the gap with a 17-4 run, including 3 3-pointers, to pull within 53-55 with 2 minutes to go. Dallas led 59-57 at the half. Dallas shot 4-4 FT and San Antonio shot 10-13 FT in the 2nd. David Robinson had 12 points and Tim Duncan had 9 points in the quarter. The game stayed close in the 3rd quarter with Dallas mostly holding small leads (with two 1 point San Antonio leads tossed in there). Dallas led 86-81 with 1:20 left and the Spurs closed the quarter by scoring the last 6 points to take an 87-86 lead after 3. Duncan made a layup to open the 4th and Dallas then scored the next 11 points to go up 97-89 with 8 minutes remaining. Nowitzki took an inadvertent elbow to the mouth and lost his upper right front tooth and went running off the court. He only missed 33 seconds of game time, though. A layup by Nowitzki gave Dallas a 105-99 lead with 2:30 to go. Duncan came back and hit 2 free throws and got a layup to pull San Antonio within 103-105 with 1:45 remaining. Bradley was amazingly (and correctly) called for 3 seconds, but Terry Porter missed an open 3-pointer with a minute left. Howard missed a jumper, but Bradley got the rebound and saved it to Nowitzki with 40 seconds to go. Finley isolated out top on Daniels, took 3 dribbles in, turned, faded, and nailed the 16-foot jumper with 20.5 seconds remaining and Dallas led 107-103. Porter drove in for the quick, uncontested layup with 17.8 seconds left as Dallas was worried about the 3-pointer and did not want to foul. The Spurs took the intentional foul with 15.7 seconds left and Finley went to the line. He hit the first, but missed the seconds and Dallas led 108-105. Daniels drove in for the slam with 6.7 seconds remaining as Dallas again focused on the 3-point shooters and not wanting to foul. Nowitzki was sent to the line with 6.1 seconds to go and he hit both to give Dallas a 3 point lead at 110-107. San Antonio got the ball into Duncan and the Mavs intentionally fouled him before a shot went off, preferring to send him to the line rather than risk a 3-pointer tying the game. Duncan hit the first free throw and unintentionally missed the 2nd (Popovich told him not to intentionally miss it), the ball bounced twice on the rim as Malik Rose and Howard went up for the rebound and the ball came down to the ground and Sean Elliott scooped it up and as he pulled the ball back to take the shot, Greg Buckner swiped the ball away and grabbed the ball as it was heading out of bounds and tossed it to Finley, who was fouled with 1.7 seconds remaining. Finley hit both free throws to ice the game. Dallas won 112-108. San Antonio leads the series 3-1. Hey, the real Mavs team finally showed up! I guess it just takes having their back against the wall. The Mavs did show their pride and won this one, forcing a Game 5 and not allowing their first 4 game losing streak of the season. For only the 2nd time in the playoffs, Dallas shot well (the blowout in Game 4 vs Utah being the other) - easily their best shooting of the playoffs - at 48.4% FG. Some will look at the free throw difference between the two teams can call that the most shocking stat of the game, but to me, the most shocking stat of the game was that San Antonio had 52 points in the paint and Dallas had _50_ points in the game. The team finally started challenging Duncan and Robinson instead of simply settling for the outside shots. Most bball people know that if you take it inside, it opens the outside. That proved to be true in this game. As for the free throw difference, San Antonio shot 29-41 FT and Dallas shot 18-19 FT. Despite the difference, I thought the ref crew did a very good job. Sure it wasn't perfect and a list of mistakes could be made, but the missed/bad calls seemed to balance out, with a slight edge to San Antonio. [2 of Bradley's fouls were legitimate blocks, Nash got away with a flop, the ball went off of Porter's foot when Dirk lost his tooth, Dallas could have been called for more illegal defenses, ...] It was also a pretty clean game with only 21 turnovers combined - Dallas only had a team playoff record low 7 turnovers in the game. The game was won by the strong performances by a number of players. It's hard not to start with Dirk, but Michael Finley's shot with 20 seconds left was awesome and key to the win. He started off slow, shooting just 4-11 FG in the 1st half, but finished strong by scoring 12 of Dallas' 26 points in the 4th quarter. Finley had 25 points, 5 rebounds, 10 assists, and _0_ turnovers in playing all 48 minutes. And what can you say about Dirk Nowitzki? No one can question his heart. To have a tooth knocked out midway through the 4th quarter and only miss 33 seconds of game time is amazing. He had 4 points and 3 rebounds after losing the tooth. The kid is great and going to be awesome and the world finally got a glimpse of the true Dirk (he's going to turn just 23 in June). Nowitzki had 30 points, including 6 points in the 4th, on 11-18 FG and 8-8 FT and 9 rebounds. Juwan Howard also had a strong game with 17 points, including 6 in the 4th quarter, and 8 rebounds. Steve Nash struggled shooting, but gave it where the Mavs need it most from him with his 14 assists (2nd most in team playoff history). Nash had 10 points on 4-11 FG and 5 rebounds to go with his high assists. The unexpected performance came from Calvin Booth, who the team had hardly heard from since his heroics in Game 5 vs Utah. Booth had 16 points including 7-10 FG and 4 rebounds in just 18 minutes of play. Shawn Bradley was effective as usual and plagued by foul trouble, as usual. Bradley takes a lot of bashing, but he does affect the game and it was evident in this game. Dallas led by 15 points when Bradley picked up his 3rd foul in the 2nd quarter and sat for the rest of the half and Dallas only led by 2 points at the half. Bradley had 10 points and 6 rebounds in the game. Greg Buckner, of course, had the game saving steal at the end of the game and the heads up play of getting it to Finley before landing out of bounds. Stats never tell the story with Buck as he just had 4 points and 4 rebounds. Howard Eisley had a donut in 11 minutes of play (only 3 attempts), but his 3 assists were positives. Eduardo Najera had a donut in the last minute and a half of the 2nd quarter in subbing in for Nowitzki, who had 3 fouls. On the other side of the coin, San Antonio looks at the boxscore and bemoans the free throw shooting in that they missed 12 free throws in what was a 4 point loss. The main culprit was Tim Duncan, who only shot 11-19 FT. He also struggled early shooting as he only shot 4-11 FG in the 1st half. He did have 12 points in the 4th quarter and finished with an impressive 29 points including 9-23 FG, 18 rebounds, and 5 assists. David Robinson had another strong performance with 25 points on 8-13 FG and 9-11 FT and 13 rebounds. Antonio Daniels had 18 points and Terry Porter had 15 points and 8 assists to round out the 4 Spurs in double-digits. Danny Ferry had a poor outing with just 3 points on 1-3 FG. The Spurs' bench had a series low 18 points. Malik Rose had 8 points, Avery Johnson had 7 points, and Sean Elliott had just 2 points (had 17 in Game 3). Steve Kerr had 1 point in 3 determental minutes - he got switched on Nowitzki defensively and Nowitzki got consecutive easy buckets on him. Samaki Walker had a donut in 4 minutes. Game 5 is tonight and it is still a do-or-die game for Dallas. Dallas needs a repeat performance along the lines of Game 4. They need to keep shooting well, they need to keep taking the ball inside and converting or kicking it out to open shooters, and they need to keep playing their game. Low scores are to the Spurs' advantage. More importantly, they need to believe. The past has shown that confidence can carry this team, even in the face of almost impossible odds. The Spurs have extra incentive in that the Lakers have completed their series and the Spurs are going to want the rest, but Dallas is not ready to start their vacation. Here's hoping that both teams come out strong and it's a great game! Go Mavs!!! Quotes Don Nelson: "It was a really great game for us. I don't know if we can play much better than we played. We just did the best we could and we finally made some shots. I thought they played good, but we played great and we barely won. I think that shows the power that they have. But I'm very excited because I don't think that until you beat a team that they really can have that much respect for you. I think this is maybe a small step, but certainly a step to get some respect from San Antonio and people who have been watching us on national TV that probably don't think that we were very good because we haven't played very well yet. But today was the opposite of the way we have been playing. We played terrific. We were crisp all night and I'm real proud of the team - the way they came back. It's not easy to play this game. But to know, looking into the teeth of a tiger, that you don't have much of a chance to win the series and come out and play like that. I'm very very proud of our team and the maximum effort that they gave and I expect the same thing the next time out. That will be a tough game for us in the Alamodome." Nelson: "Nothing matters at this point. You just stay together as a group and you function as a unit. You don't get mad at anybody if they miss an assignment, you know, you just try to correct the error. It's going to be ups and downs, we were playing a great basketball team. We hung in there and I really thought it was a good game, I don't know - you be the judge of that. But to me it was a very good game, from where I was sitting, very exciting. I think the NBA should be proud of this game." Nelson: "It was the best game we played. I think we've been fairly good defensively the whole way. They haven't shot a high percentage except for Game 3 when we ran out of energy and I think that was mainly because of Dirk, he just didn't have it that night. Other than that, our defense has been very solid. It was good again tonight." Nelson: "Our ball movement was crisp and it was good, for the most part. I thought our play selection was good, we didn't overcall plays. We let the players play and dictate tempo. Of all the games that we have played, we have only played one better than this in the playoffs." Nelson on the changes offensively: "Well we're doing some things to try to generate some offense and some of them were successful. I'm not going to tell you what they were - I'm going to make Pop figure them out by watching the film. Otherwise he wouldn't watch the film, he would just read your column. So we did generate some offense. I think we were just crisp and we were healthy and fresh for a change." Nelson on taking the ball inside more: "Our emphasis today was to be respectful of their shot blocking ability, but certainly not be fearful of it." Nelson on Nowitzki: "What a gusty guy. He plays a game when he looks like he had died the last game and he had two IV's right before the game, got out there and gave it his best. He really didn't have much, you could probably see the energy level wasn't there. But tonight he was feeling good and he was just a different player. Our whole team kind of rallied around that, I think, and everybody played at a high level. It didn't matter, to be quite honest, we were just going to do the best that we could do. And if we went home after tonight, then that's what would have happened." Nelson on Nowitzki: "You know, Dirk's a young player and he has his ups and downs and this is definitely an up. We needed it. He struggled on occasion and he looks like a 23 year-old out there and then on occasion looks like a veteran player like tonight. We think a lot of him, we love his character, we love his ability and he really just needs knowledge. And that's why these games are so important to him and everybody else that gets to play in them. They are gaining for the future, gaining some expertise for the future." Nelson on Bradley and Booth: "Well Bradley has been good the whole playoffs; very seldom has he not played well. It's just keeping him on the court enough without getting him in foul trouble, I have to be very careful. Again, I lose my 2 big guys in the 1st half where they both had 3 fouls, it makes it very difficult for the other guys. Everybody made a contribution, I lost nobody because of fouls and it was a good game." Nelson on Duncan's and Robinson's missed shots: "There's not reasons for everything, we didn't do anything different the whole game on those 2 guys. Our coverage was about the same. Sometimes they miss shots and sometimes they make them. You know, you go out there in the gym by yourself, you'll miss some shots. So maybe it was one of those kind of things. Maybe other guys were getting shots so they didn't participate as much. We had our hands full, let's face it. We win a close game and we played great." Nelson on Game 5: "It's, again, an experience I want our players to go through. Whether we win or lose that game, I want our guys to go through that because there is no louder building when they get 40, 50 thousand people in there. It's a different atmosphere they're used to. It's in a dome. It's against a great, great team, a team that has won a championship. I wanted to get back there in the worst way and I would like to come back to Dallas one more time too, by the way. I do think we'll play well in that game. Whether it's enough to win or not, I don't know. The experience is what we're after and thank goodness we got another look at another game." Michael Finley: "It's always good to win. We haven't been playing great ball the past 3 games and to finally to come and out play a decent game and get a win is very gratifying. It was something that the fans wanted, something that the team wanted and we went out and performed and got the job done." Finley: "Coach Nelson emphasized that he wanted us to pass the ball more and get everyone involved. At times we were just standing on one side of the court and when you do that against a defense like the Spurs it made it really hard for us to score. We emphasized swinging the ball and get everyone involved. We have some good passers on this team and we wanted to utilize that and we did that today." Finley: "We emphasized swinging the ball, getting everybody involved. We have some pretty good passers on this team so we wanted to utilize that. We were becoming a little bit predictable. He just wanted us to go out there and play, give the Spurs something they hadn't seen in the first 3 games." Finley: "Coach wanted us to give the Spurs something they hadn't seen offensively the first 3 games and that was just a freelance motion offense and it seem to work to our advantage." Finley: "Offensively, I couldn't find a good rhythm. Finally, I don't know what happened, I hit a shot and fell into a good groove. I guess Coach saw that and kept getting me the ball." Finley on his shot with 20 seconds left: "Early in the game I couldn't get into a groove, but when it came down to crunch time I got into a groove. Initially, I saw Dirk in the post, but I wanted that shot. Make or miss, I wanted to have that shot on my shoulders so I cleared Dirk out to the corner. They are good position players, they are going to play your one move so I usually have to give them two moves and when the ball left my hand I knew it was going in." Finley: "Now we know we can beat this team. So now we have to go to San Antonio and do the same thing we did today. We have to play with high intensity and try to win that ballgame as well." Finley: "We're not ready for our summer to start. It's been very evident in the closing games. It just shows you the type of heart we have as a team. Hopefully we can keep that going in San Antonio." Finley on the win: "It gives us another day. We know we can beat this team." Finley on Nowitzki: "Dirk came out with the energy from the jump ball till the end of the game. He was running around today like it was his first game. He just had a lot of energy. His shots were flowing, even when they weren't flowing he was being active defensively. He also was making his defenders pay. When you see that look in Dirk's eye, you know he's going to have a good night and I was happy to see it." Dirk Nowitzki: "I just try to be more aggressive - create my own shots early on, try to drive in there and get some fouls on the big guys, just to be more aggressive. That's what I tired doing and it worked out great, especially in the 1st half. Everyone got going. I think we played a great basketball team, but we won." Nowitzki on taking the ball to the hole: "Against one of the best shot blockers in the league, you have to go in there strong." Nowitzki: "I was hurting the last game, so I couldn't really play with a lot of energy. Today I felt a lot better. Like I said, I just tried to be aggressive and tried to run around, get my space with my jump shot, and it worked out great." Nowitzki: "My tooth was already knocked out in the summer. So it was loose anyway. So I'm glad it's gone now and I can get a fake one in now." Nowitzki on returning to the court after loosing his tooth: "If people want to call me soft, they can call me soft. I'm not doing this to shut people up. I came back out there because we had to win this game. We had too good of a season to get swept." Nowitzki: "I think we had too good of a season to get swept. That's why it was very important, especially in front of the home crowd, to show them a good game again and beat this team. I think now we know how to beat them. We hadn't beat them this whole playoff series, so it was very important to get that win. I think we can beat them down there. We've just got to go down there and play with the same energy, play hard. Then only good things can happen." Nowitzki on Game 5: "It's tough, for sure, especially with going back to their place now. But I think nothing is impossible. We saw it in the Utah series. We played our best basketball when our backs are against the ball. Hopefully we can get it all together and start a great run." Juwan Howard: "We had a job to do today. We said that we were going to lay it all on the line and play hard from start to finish. You don't want to get swept. You have to take one game at a time. This series is not over. Anything can happen. To get a win today is gratifying for everyone. That was the big difference today, we all had fun. As a team, everyone was contributing. Calvin added an extra spark to the team by hitting some shots, rebounding and he looked very comfortable out there on the floor. Mike hit some big shots down the stretch." Howard: "We just decided we weren't gonna go out like no punk. We had allowed them to dictate everything inside. We allowed them to be stronger inside." Howard: "Inside, we just took it at them. The big guys haven't played to the level that we're capable of playing against the Spurs. We allowed them to dictate and be stronger inside, and we acted like we were playing tentative. I came out and I said, 'Hey, we're just going to take it at them. They're going have to foul us, they're going to have to make us hit the floor, but we're not going to go out like no punks, we're not going to play soft.'" Howard: "We just said we're not going to go out soft. We were going to take it to them." Howard on Dallas' big men's performances: "We took it [personal]. The Twin Towers have been dominating. We have not played well. We haven't played to our abilities. We've played timid." Howard on Nowitzki: "Dirk is a tough guy. He showed that when he played the last game with the stomach virus. To come back with a missing tooth, now he's going to have to go out and start playing with a mouth guard. He looks like a hockey player right now. He's no longer a sex symbol to the ladies like he was before." Howard on Booth: "Calvin added an extra spark to the team by hitting some shots, rebounding, he looked very comfortable on the floor. But everyone contributed." Shawn Bradley on Booth: "Calvin came out with the energy he needed to help our team, and hopefully I was able to do the same thing." Calvin Booth: "It was night and day between the first games and today in how we moved the ball. Guys were hitting shots, there was a lot of motion I think that helped me a lot. I was in a lot better position to get shots." Booth: "I think I was in position to take shots more in this game. I've always looked at the basket. We were in a motion offense, and the guys moved the ball around. I was able to get some looks rather than just settling for stuff off the boards." Booth: "I just tried to get in the flow. [Duncan and Robinson] still got their numbers. I just tried to follow the game plan, which is trying to stop them from getting easy baskets. They're both very talented and athletic." Booth: "We didn't want to get swept. We went out there with a lot of pride. Hopefully we can win next time. We are still alive." Greg Buckner on his steal: "It was just a lucky play." Greg Popovich: "Great game. Very competitive. Both teams very aggressive and got after it. I thought Dallas, obviously, did a real good job of making shots down the stretch. I was proud of our team for digging the hole we did dig and pulling out of it. I thought they gave everything they had to try to get the series done. To Dallas' credit, they played really hard and they executed real well down the stretch of the 4th quarter and got the game." Popovich: "It's a game. You're not going to play someone the same way forever. Eventually, something is going to break. They shot 49%, I think, tonight, if I'm not mistaken. They're not going to continue to shoot the way we held them for 3 games. That would be great if they did, but it shouldn't be surprising to any body that they break out and shoot the way they did. That's who they are." Popovich on Nowitzki: "Dirk was Dirk. He is a hell of a player. He did a great job. He was aggressive. He got his shots off and they went down for him. They haven't gone down very well for him, but they did today. He ended up doing a great job." Tim Duncan: "They came out with a lot of energy and some of their shots were falling tonight. I thought they did a great job of opening up the floor and getting some open looks and knocking them down. I thought we hung tough and gave ourselves an opportunity down the stretch. But I missed too many free throws. I missed 8 free throws and we lose the game by 3 - that's the difference right there." Duncan: "I thought we did a great job getting back into it. We just couldn't put a couple of stops and a couple of scores together at the right time. Every time we got a stop, we go and convert on the other end or we couldn't get a stop. So we just couldn't put it together at the right time." Duncan: "They came out and they just hit some great shots. I thought Antonio played Michael Finley great a couple of times in a row there with a hand in the face and he hit some tough ones. So the ball just bounced their way today." Duncan on his free throw shooting: "It was just a bad night. Thought I was in a rhythm there and it felt good. Then I missed 2 down the stretch there and then 1 at the end. All in all, I'm feeling pretty good on the line. They've been going down for me. Just a bad night for me." Duncan on Nowitzki: "I thought they did a great job of using their motion to get him open and get him to parts of the floor where he felt comfortable. He just hit shots. He got to the spots where he felt comfortable. He rose up and took his shot. He hit them early and got some confidence. When he was in the open floor, coming down before the defense could set and getting that little free throw line jumper that he likes. He just got to comfortable spots." Duncan on Booth: "He was the X factor. When he comes out and gets 16 on us, those are points that are unexpected." Duncan on Game 5: "We are right where we were. We are in the same situation. We've got to win one more game to end the series. They played great today and that's great for them, but they still have to win 3 more. We just have to win 1 more. So we're going to go home, protect our home court, and finish it there." David Robinson: "Early in the game I thought they really did a nice job of it. They kind of switched their offense up a little bit. They went to a little freer offense, kind of a motion offense, and really threw us off for a little bit. We made the adjustment, but once we made the adjustment they already got a nice little rhythm going and those guys did a great job, shot the ball extremely well. They played _really_ well. This is the playoffs - you've got to expect it. But they did a great job. It took us a while to respond, but I was really proud of the way we responded to it. We had our chances. We missed a whole lot of free throws - kind of hurt us. And missed some opportunities down the stretch." Robinson on sweeping: "It would have been nice, but it didn't happen that way. Like I said, we're not that worried about sweeping it anyway. We just want to play good basketball, get better game by game, and win the series." Robinson: "112 points - that's not any where close to the way we want to play basketball. That 1st half was unreal, letting them score, what, 59 points. In the 2nd half, they scored more - not more, but they still ran up and down the court and got some buckets. We want to cut down their open looks. They really did a good job, like I said, of getting more open looks tonight. You've got to give them credit. They really responded. They made some adjustments; they did a good job. But that's what this is about - making the adjustments and come back at it." Robinson: "You have to understand the nature of where we are - this is the 2nd round in the playoffs. There is no creampuffs out here. You're not going to walk all over people. You're not going to go into their gym and just beat them up and send them home. I expected them to respond the way they did today. They showed a lot of courage. They played fantastic. They had just about everyone of their key players play a great game tonight. You give them a lot of credit. They responded. We responded pretty well, but not enough. That's what I expect and I'm glad. I want us to be tested. I want us to go ahead and prove to ourselves that we can respond in situations when it gets tough. We've got to understand that it takes a little more to make a champion. You got to dig down a little deeper sometimes. Shoot, it doesn't go the way you want to. You don't go in and sweep people all the time - that's unrealistic to think that." Robinson on free throw shooting: "When we miss them, we miss them in bunches. Fortunately, for most of the season it didn't really bite us. But today it bit us. We missed way too many free throws." Robinson on Duncan: "I thought he looked great. That's where we really need him, in the 4th quarter. If we need me to carry the scoring load early on, I'll be glad to do that. But he's our go to guy. He's the money man. He does a great job at it. I'm not concerned about him starting slow as long as he finishes strong." Antonio Daniels: "They kind of threw us for a loop coming out, not going with sets. They came out kind of free. Everyone was playing with emotion. And they hit their shots." Daniels: "We lost a game. That's all it is. It's not a lost opportunity. We didn't take advantage of an opportunity to sweep them. So now we go back to SA, pack the dome and hopefully take care of business on Monday." Daniels: "They have heart. They have very, very good players capable of having big games. They had a couple of guys that had a good game - that's going to happen eventually. That's part of professional sports. You're dealing with very good, athletic players who are capable of making things happen." Daniels on Finley: "If he shoots 10-, 12-, 20-foot turnaround jump shots, I've got to live with that. I have to live with that - as long as he's not getting all the way to the bucket and dunking. I felt like I played good defense. I kept him in front of me. Those are the shots they hadn't been hitting in the series thus far. You know eventually they're going to knock them down. They're not going to shoot as bad as they'd been shooting forever." Daniels on Finley: "He's an All-Star. Part of being All-Star is taking the team on your back and hitting big shots with good defense on you." Terry Porter on his missed 3-pointer with a minute left: "It was never on line. That's disappointing, because it's a situation I like being in." Porter: "We're up 3-1. Why should [the loss] change us? Next game's at home. Win that game and the series is over. We'll just focus on that." Sean Elliott on San Antonio's defense: "We did in spurts, but the majority of the time, I don't think we played nearly where we needed to defensively. Especially early on, they just did whatever they wanted to." Elliott: "They played pretty well, but we know that Dirk is capable of big games and Finley is capable of shooting the ball even better. So who knows if we've seen their best." Elliott on Nowitzki: "Dirk never stopped moving. And when he does that, we can't put a big man on him. He will destroy him."
