The NBA draft came and went with hardly a whisper from the Mavs - much to the shock of almost everyone. For only the 2nd time in his GM career, Don Nelson did not make a trade. How uneventful was it? We had Gregg Elkin, Mavs Media Director, informing the media people, "We have No-Doze in the hall if anyone needs it." And Don Nelson saying, "I actually had a lot of action in the war room. I went around trying to keep everyone awake." The Mavs took Kyle Hill with the #44 pick and Kenny Satterfield with the #54 pick. Both are long shots to make the team and will have to earn a roster spot - don't be too surprised if neither is on the opening day roster. The Mavs were pretty high on Hill and happy to get him. He is a 6-2 shooting guard from Eastern Illinois. What his ballhanding skills turn out to be will determine if he can make it in the NBA - 6-2 is short for a shooting guard and he'll be asked to learn to play point. His plus is that he's a shooter. Mark Cuban said that he hardly missed a shot in the workout he had with the Mavs - one of 12 players Dallas brought in for a workout. His 23.8 points in his senior year was the 2nd highest in the NCAA. He shot 47.3% (250-529) FG including 43.2% (86-199) from the college 3-point land as a senior. He said that his team emphasized shooting and defense. Satterfield was picked based on the scouts' recommendation - he was not brought in for a workout - but Dallas was surprised that he was still available. Don Nelson seemed to not know much about him, besides say that the scouts said to take him. Satterfield is a 6-2 guard from Cincinnati who came out after his sophomore season. He averaged 14.4 points including a poor 38.7% (163-421) FG, 5.1 assists, and 4.7 rebounds as a sophomore. Both will be on the Mavs' summer team. Mark Cuban on Hill (from my notes, number of different comments): Just a phenomenal shooter. Plays above the rim. Worked out well, hardly missed a shot. A shooter. Likes Hill, but it will be tough for him to make the team, but he will be given a chance. Cuban: "We went into this know that these guys are going to be long shots to make the team." Cuban on Hill: "Boy, what a shooter this kid is. We want him to come in and have fun, show us what his game is all about. Him and Kenny both. And if they do the things we expect from them, you just never know what's going to happen." Cuban: the drafting philosophy was to draft the best athlete available. Cuban on how hard it was not making a trade: "It's really easy after a 50 win season." Cuban on Loren Wood, who was available at #44: Didn't pass our physical. Nelson on Hill: "Kyle Hill was one of the 12 players we worked out and I thought he could be an NBA player." Nelson on Hill: "He didn't play for a big university, but we still like the skill level a lot. His skill level is extremely high and he's got a great shot and a great hop. He really can get up for 6-2." Nelson: "Shooting is an art and with the new rules, shooting is at a premium." Nelson on the draftees: "They will be in our summer program and we'll go from there." Kyle Hill: "I can do a lot of things. I can shoot, I can score, I can play defense. I can do a lot of things that people don't know about. I know I come from a small school, but I think I'm going to surprise a lot of people." The stats and draft guide bios for the 2 players are at the end. Season tickets holders have received their invoices for next season and their new seating assignments for the new arena. Paying in full by July 20 results in the price being the same as last season (not paying in full results in the prices being more, but still less than the below prices). They also included a seating chart for the new arena with general prices for the seats. The prices for 2001-02 are: $8 Upper bowl ends, top rows (and a couple of corners) $15 Upper bowl ends, middle rows (and a couple of corners) $35 Upper bowl ends, lower rows $27 Upper bowl corners $15 Upper bowl courtside, top rows (only East side of the arena) $35 Upper bowl courtside, middle rows $44 Upper bowl courtside, lower rows $51 Lower bowl ends, upper rows $82 Lower bowl ends, lower rows $57 Lower bowl corners $85 Lower bowl courtside, upper rows $115 Lower bowl courtside, lower rows $181 Lower bowl courtside, lower rows sections 119, 118, 106, 107 (prices for rows next to the court, premium seats, and boxes not listed) Older news 6/21 Shawn Bradley underwent arthroscopic surgery on his left knee to repair torn cartilage. His recovery time is expect to take 4 weeks. 6/19 As expected, Michael Finley opted-out of his contract. He is now a free agent, but can't be signed until July 18. I'd be shocked if he didn't re-sign with Dallas. Also look for Dallas to sign Dirk Nowitzki to a maximum extension after July 18. 5/31 Dirk Nowitzki was named to the All-NBA Third Team! Nowitzki received 56 points (the 124 media panel votes for a first, second, and third team by position with a first team vote worth 5 points (Dirk didn't receive any first team votes), a second team vote worth 3 points, and a third team vote worth 1 point). He is the first Mav to make an All-NBA team (granted, they didn't have a Third Team back in the 80s). Michael Finley had the highest point total amongst guards who did not make the All-NBA teams (he was the 7th guard on the list) with 44 points (Ray Allen was the 6th guard and made the All-NBA Third Team with 105 points). There were changes made for Dallas' TV and radio broadcasts. For 2001-02, 5 games will be aired on KTVT channel 11 and 25 games will be aired on KTXA channel 21. The rest will be aired on Fox Sports Net (who broadcasted about half the game last season). KSTR channel 49, which broadcasted a number of Mavs games the past 2 seasons, is switching to a Spanish format. The radio broadcast is also moving from KLIF 570 AM, where it has been for 7 seasons, to the new KESN 103.3 FM - the new ESPN station. With the move, KLIF no longer has any sports related shows/broadcasts. The Mavs schedule will come out later in the summer with the TV broadcast schedule to follow (all games are broadcast on the radio). 5/30 Assistant coach Del Harris turned down the Cleveland Cavaliers offer of head coach. 5/23 Don Nelson finished 3rd in the Coach of the Year voting. Nelson received 8 of the 124 media votes. Larry Brown (Phi) was the run-away winner with 85 votes and Rick Adelman (Sac) was 2nd with 11 votes. 5/22 Steve Nash was voted on to the All-Interview 2nd team. Nash received 12 of the 124 media votes, which tied him with 3 others for the 10th most votes. patricia ---- Kyle Hill Position: Guard Height: 6-2 Weight: 185 Birthday: April 7, 1979 Birthplace: Chicago, Illinois High School: Argo High School (Summit, Illinois) College: Eastern Illinois'01 2001 Dallas draft pick, 2nd round (#44) Eastern Illinois stats | Rebounds | Year GP-GS MIN AVG FGM-FGA PCT FTM-FTA PCT OFF DEF TOT AVG 97-98 9- 85 9.4 18-43 0.419 10-12 0.833 19 2.1 98-99 29- 853 29.4 175-393 0.445 67-94 0.713 124 4.3 99-00 29- 889 30.7 209-444 0.471 76-113 0.673 128 4.4 00-01 31-31 1042 33.6 250-529 0.473 151-180 0.839 47 104 151 4.9 Total 98- 2869 29.3 652-1409 0.463 304-399 0.762 422 4.3 Year AST AVG PF-D STL TO BLK PTS AVG 97-98 3 0.3 6- 5 7 0 49 5.4 98-99 78 2.7 58- 52 87 10 480 16.6 99-00 104 3.6 47- 59 90 17 553 19.1 00-01 125 4.0 57-1 46 88 23 737 23.8 Total 310 3.2 168- 162 272 50 1819 18.6 3-pointers: 97-98 3-15 0.200, 98-99 63-169 0.373, 99-00 59-157 0.376, 00-01 86-199 0.432, Total 211-540 0.391.
