The trade deadline passed without Dallas making a trade for a change. Dallas can not make a trade until after their season ends (includes playoffs). Dallas did make a minor move on Thursday, though. Dallas activated Avery Johnson and placed Adrian Griffin on IR with tendinitis on his right knee. An MRI showed no structural damage on the knee, but Griff says that it is bothering him. San Antonio (37-16) at Dallas (41-12) (February 20) The big question before the game was whether or not Dirk Nowitzki would play as he had sprained his right ankle in practice the day before. All were happy when he came out of the tunnel for warmups. Everyone was expecting this game to be a war and a playoff-like game and that's what we got. San Antonio led 6-4 with 9:30 left and Dallas scored the next 11 points to go up 15-6 with 7 minutes to go. San Antonio scored the next 5 points, but then Dallas scored 7 straight points, capped by a 3-pointer by Nowitzki, to go up 22-11 with 3:25 remaining. Dallas led 29-19 after 1. Nowitzki had 10 points. San Antonio committed 8 turnovers in the quarter. Dallas led 33-24 with 10:15 left on a slam dunk by Michael Finley and Malik Rose scored the next 8 points and a layup by Emanuel Ginobili gave San Antonio a 34-33 lead with 7:20 remaining. San Antonio led 40-35 with 5:15 left and Dallas went on a 9-1 run to go up 44-41 with 2 minutes to go. Dallas led 46-43 at the half. Dallas scored the first 6 points of the 3rd quarter to go up 52-43 with 10 minutes left. Dallas led 60-51 with 3:45 remaining and San Antonio scored the next 4 points, but Dallas answered with a layup and consecutive 3-pointers to go up 68-55 with 1:20 to go. Dallas led 73-60 after 3. Dallas scored the first 4 points of 4th quarter to go up 77-60 with 11 minutes left. Dallas led 82-66 with 8:13 left when Tim Duncan accidentally got poked in the eye by Michael Finley and left the game. With their leader gone, San Antonio mounted a monster run of 16-2 to get back in the game at 82-84 with 3 minutes remaining. Nowitzki finally ended Dallas' 6 minute field goal drought by drained a 3-pointer with 2:55 to go. Rose hit 1 of 2 free throws as Raef LaFrentz collect his 6th foul and Steve Nash hit a jumper to give Dallas a 89-83 lead with 2:15 remaining. Neither team scored over the next minute and Ginobili was fouled on a rebound and hit 2 free throws with 55 seconds left. Nash again answered with a jumper to put Dallas up 91-85 with 35 seconds left. Tony Parker hit a jumper with 27 seconds remaining, but fouled out when he intentionally fouled Nash with 23 seconds to go. Nash hit both free throws and Danny Ferry missed a jumper with 13 seconds left. 2 free throws by Nowitzki capped the scoring. Dallas won 95-87. Phew. After accumulating such a large lead in the the 4th quarter against a quality team, then allowing them back in the game is frustrating. Part of Dallas' problem is that they went away from their usual offense in trying to get the ball to whomever Tony Parker was guarding to try and get Parker's 6th foul. The loss of Tim Duncan actually seemed to help San Antonio as Dallas did a great job of containing Duncan. Dallas did a good job of aggressively double-teaming Duncan whenever he got the ball - and sometimes even when he didn't have the ball. For the game, Dallas shot 45.1% (37-82) FG including 7-21 3-pointers and San Antonio shot 45.6% (31-68) FG including 6-13 3-pointers. Dallas shot 14-19 FT and San Antonio shot 19-27 FT (the refs were allowing a lot of physical play inside (by both teams)). Dallas did out-rebounded San Antonio 47-37 including 13-5 offensive. San Antonio had just 16 assists and Dallas had just 19 assists. Steve Nash led the way for Dallas with 29 points and 10 assists in 42 minutes - the most he's played in a game this season. Dirk Nowitzki had 22 points and 6 rebounds. Michael Finley had 19 points and 8 rebounds. No other Mav was in double-digits. Shawn Bradley had 2 points and 8 rebounds and Raef LaFrentz had 3 points and 5 rebounds, but their job on Duncan deserves some credit. As mentioned above, Tim Duncan struggled mightily with the defense Dallas threw at him and only had 11 points on 3-10 FG and 4-8 FT, 6 rebounds, and 7 turnovers before his injury in the 4th quarter. On the other hand, Malik Rose stepped up big time and had a monster game with 25 points (including a number of tough shots) and 14 rebounds. 11 of his points came in the 4th quarter. Tony Parker had 13 points and 6 rebounds, but only 1 assist. Stephen Jackson had 10 points and Emanuel Ginobili had 11 points. Quotes Don Nelson: "I was real happy that we came out on top. We didn't expect it to be an easy game, even when we got up 16 points. They are really good. I don't really rest until the game is in hand. Too bad about Duncan. I guess he got poked in the eye. Nobody could have done much better than Rose. He was an unstoppable guy, at least with the guy I had guarding him. They made a run at us. We held them off and coach was happy about that. It was a big game for us and nobody has beaten them, so we had to beat them ourselves and we were able to do that tonight. We decided not to worry about tomorrow's game until tomorrow. We made sure that we could win this one. We used all our bullets up and I do think I have some guys that I think I over played, like Nash, but he was the best player on the floor tonight. We needed to keep him in the game. No question he was tired, but there was nothing I could do about that." Nelson: "Don't make too much out of this. It was a big game because a goal of ours is to win our division and they have a lot to say about that. The biggest game will be the one tomorrow. This was a double game. It's a loss [for them] and a win [for us]. The other ones count one. We wanted to make sure that we went after this one." Nelson: "I saw a little toughness once in a while. That's nice to see." Nelson on defending Duncan: "I thought our game plan was good and it was successful. I'm not going to go into any detail about what we did. The fact that we were able to execute some things we were never able to execute before and switch into a zone and do a really good job in a couple of their favorite areas, but it was still difficult for us. It was a really good win for us and probably one of the best of the season." Nelson: "We haven't been able to control Parker and coach put the best defender we had on him and I thought it was as well as we had done against him. We gave Bell a lot of help. We blitzed screen-and-rolls and everybody did a good job of following the game plan, with the exception of the 2nd quarter - we made some errors there. The guys in the game in the 2nd quarter hadn't been to the shoot around. So they had a period of about 5 minutes where they had a lot of errors and that is when San Antonio got back into the game and had a big quarter against us. I thought everybody did well in the 2nd half." Michael Finley: "The key to our win tonight was our defensive execution. No matter what defense we were in, we played hard. We wanted them work hard for each and every basket that they got. We did that for most of the game, but at times we got out of that and that's when they were able to make their runs." Finley: "We had to come up big and we did the things that good teams do. We executed when we had to and overcame their run at the end. Now we just have to do it on a consistent basis." Finley on winning despite San Antonio's comeback: "It was good. Tonight we were able to not let their momentum fluster us. We knew that they were going to make a run, but it's just a matter of how we were going to react to that. We did that by tightening up our defense and taking more quality shots on the offensive end." Finley on if Dallas made a statement: "No, it's just one game. You make a statement by winning a series of games. Hopefully we can use this win and get a little winning streak going." Finley on what he said to the team before the game (and after the trade deadline): "I told them this is the team we're taking to war the rest of the way. There's no more additions and no more subtractions and no more mental distractions. Now, we just play." Finley on Nowitzki: "Dirk, he's a warrior. He's going to play whether he's 100% or 50%. If he was able to walk, he'd give us a presence." Dirk Nowitzki: "We haven't really shown we can win big games. But tonight we did." Nowitzki: "I thought we were going to win the game, no question. We just had to settle down and execute once or twice." Nowitzki on his 3-pointer that gave Dallas a 5 point lead: "I really wasn't shooting the ball well all game. Nick gave me a good pass and I was open." Steve Nash: "This was the biggest win because this game has been built up and up. I don't think any of us think we shouldn't beat that team." Nash: "They made a run at us, and it was important for us [Nash and Nowitzki], being leaders on this team, to make some shots and take some of the pressure off of us." Nash on Dallas' struggles against the best in the West: "That made this an important game. We had to start beating these teams because we've had a lack of success against them. I don't think this means we're there yet. But I think we had the same attitude that we've had against some of the teams that aren't as good." Nick Van Exel on the win: "It was big. Our game plan was terrific and we executed it well. We did a good job on Tim Duncan, our big guys played well. Raja did a great job on Tony Parker and those were the two keys." Van Exel: "It's good to break that streak. Our defensive game plan was unbelievable. The plan was to limit Duncan's 1-on-1 catches, always have someone in front of him and somebody behind him." Van Exel: "We probably still won't get much respect, because we still have to do a lot more. It's just one game, but it's a big game for us and a big game for our confidence. We gained a game up on those guys in the Midwest Division, so it's pretty big for us." Van Exel on if it was a playoff-type atmosphere: "Yes, it definitely was. We did a good job of not being hesitant in the 1st quarter like we did against Sacramento. We came out and played our type of game and our big 3 were really attacking on the offensive end." Van Exel on Nash: "He set the tone by running, by scoring, by shooting the ball in the 1st quarter. In the 2nd quarter our bench let them get back into the game and then Nash came back into the game and calmed everything down and pushed the lead back up. He really controlled the tempo of the game tonight." Van Exel on Nowitzki being questionable with a sprained ankle: "We knew he'd play. There was joking going around in the locker room about Duncanitis because he also missed the first game in San Antonio." Raja Bell on his defense on Parker: "I just tried to stay in front of him, keep him out of the paint. I got help from the big guys on the screens, where he likes to operate. They kept on him until I got back to him." Bell on Dallas' defense on Duncan: "We fronted him and tried to build a wall behind him. When he spun, the guards got their hands in his lap. The coaches told us what he liked to do. He is the best big man in the league." Greg Popovich: "I was really happy with our group for continuing to play when a lot of teams would have cashed it in and ended up getting beat by a bundle. I thought we did a great job of hanging in and not hanging our heads. That was the only good thing. We had more turnovers than assists, and that is probably not a good thing. I thought Dallas played aggressively all night long. Their defense was much better than it was at any time last year. Their aggressiveness was real important tonight and they went out and got a great victory." Popovich on Dallas' defense on Duncan: "It wasn't a lot of different things; they went at him. Everybody does, but I don't think we handled it real well and that is why we had more turnovers than assists. I thought our spacing was poor and we didn't read situations very well. I don't think we played very smart. A lot of that has to be credited to their aggressiveness. They did a good job." Popovich on Rose: "He obviously had a good game from beginning to end. He is getting more and more comfortable with the new guys with Jackson and Ginobili and everybody; finding a place out on the court. We went to him a little bit tonight and he really came through very well. A great all around game." Popovich on Duncan: "He's got an awfully red eye, but I think he's okay." Tony Parker: "It was a bad loss, but you have to give credit to the Mavericks. They played great. We just turned over the ball too much and when you get a lot of turnovers, it is going to be hard to win because they score a lot of easy points and get easy buckets so it makes our job harder." Parker: "We knew we were going to lose sometime, but it's still disappointing." Parker: "I think the key when you are on the road is to control the ball and control the boards. They killed us on the boards. I think they had 13 [11] offensive rebounds and Nash and Nowitzki had a big night. It is just going to be tough." Malik Rose: "They did jump out early. It was a good effort on their part. We had a lot of turnovers early in the game and they turned them into points. They thrive off that, especially in this building. They got themselves going and they got the crowd into it. We battled back a few times, but it is hard to overcome that." Rose on if they tried to do too much when they fell behind: "No. That was probably one of our problems early. We had a couple guys, myself included at times, we were trying to take it on ourselves instead of playing team ball. We came back in the 2nd half, we were moving the ball and sharing the ball." Rose on Dallas' defense on Duncan: "They actually employed one of our defenses that we use on Dirk. They came with a different double-team from the blind side on Timmy. It took a while to recognize it. They always do a good job of fronting Tim and we did a bad job of forcing it into Tim instead of swinging it and sharing it." Rose on the end of San Antonio's 9 game winning streak: "We'll just have to start a new streak." Rose on if Dallas needed the win: "You can probably say that. They're the top team in the league, but certain reporters say they can't play with the Sacramentos, the Portlands, the Lakers, with us." Emanuel Ginobili on the comeback: "Sometimes with Tim we just give him the ball and expect him to save us. Without him we get a little more responsibility. We need to improve that. That's important because it will make him feel [more confident] with us." Aware of Dallas having played the night before, Houston came out running and their first 5 shots came off of dunks and/or alley-oops. Dallas was able to hold steady and hit their own shots and neither team led by more than 3 points the first 6 minutes of the game. Dallas led 16-12 with 5:45 remaining and Houston went on a 15-2 run to go up 27-18 with 1:45 left as Dallas shot 1-6 FG and committed 3 turnovers. Shawn Bradley hit a jumper at the quarter buzzer. Houston led 30-23 after 1. Houston shot 12-20 FG in the quarter. Dallas scored the first 4 points of the 2nd quarter and Houston was clinging to a single-digit lead as their deadeye shooting touch had left them. Houston scored 6 straight points to go up 43-35 with 4:40 left, but Dallas scored the next 12 points, with 10 of those from Dirk Nowitzki, to go up 47-43 with a minutes to go. Avery Johnson drove for 2 at the quarter buzzer and Dallas led 49-45 at the half. Houston only shot 26% FG in the 2nd quarter. Dallas led 57-55 with 7:30 remaining and went on a 12-2 run, including 8 points from Nowitzki, to go up 69-57 with 4 minutes left. Yao Ming scored the next 5 points to put Dallas' lead back in single-digits. Nick Van Exel drained a 3-pointer as the quarter ended and Dallas led 75-66 after 3. Van Exel also opened the 4th quarter with a 3-pointer and a jumper by Nowitzki gave Dallas an 80-66 lead with 11 minutes to go. Houston pulled within 73-82 with 7:45 left, but Dallas then scored the next 8 points to go up 90-73 with 6:15 left. After a 3-pointer by Steve Nash (where you could see Rudy Tomjanovich in the background grab his head disbelief) and a 3-point play by Van Exel gave Dallas a 98-79 lead with 3 minutes remaining, the subs came in and the rest was garbage time. Dallas won 100-85. Even after the big San Antonio win, there was no let down in this game, thanks in part to the strong performances by Dirk Nowitzki and Shawn Bradley (yes, Bradley). The Mavs did it on offense and defense - the only thing they didn't do was rebound. Dallas shot 49.4% (38-77) FG and Houston shot 35.3% (30-85) FG - only 28% after their strong shooting 1st quarter. Dallas didn't make a 3-pointer in the 1st half (0-7), but was strong in the 2nd half in shooting 6-10 3-pointers. Houston did out-rebound Dallas 56-40 including a disgusting 23-6 offensive, but it doesn't matter too much when the opponent can't make even the 2nd chance opportunities. It is the first time ever that Dallas has swept the season series vs Houston (4-0). As mentioned above, there were 2 heros in this game. Dirk Nowitzki was his usual stellar self with 34 points on 11-20 FG and 10-11 FT and 11 rebounds. Shawn Bradley came in when Raef LaFrentz got in foul trouble and was able to provide defense against Yao Ming and offense in hitting the outside shots. Bradley had 12 points including 5-6 FG, 7 rebounds, and 6 blocks. On one play, he block Yao, Yao got the ball back and went up for the jam, but Bradley again block him. On another play, James Posey went for the one-hand jam and Bradley got up and cleanly blocked it. Steve Nash contributed 14 points on 6-6 FG and 1-3 FT (his tiredness showed with the 2 misses) and 5 assists in 24 minutes. Michael Finley only had 8 points including 3-10 FG, but did have 7 rebounds and the play of the night with a monster slam over 7-5 Yao. Raja Bell started for his defense against Steve Francis. His shot wasn't falling, but he did hit Dallas' first 3-pointer of the game. He had 6 points including 2-6 FG and 5 rebounds. Nick Van Exel again provided a boost from the bench with 13 points and 7 assists in giving Nash some rest. Steve Francis was playing with a sore back and tried carrying his team, but it wasn't enough. He had 19 points, 7 rebounds, 7 assists, 5 steals, and 5 turnovers. Yao Ming was held to just 3 points in the 1st half, but did finish with 18 points and 11 rebounds. He only shot 5-14 FG, though, and was blocked 3 times by Bradley. Cuttino Mobley had 16 points and 6 rebounds and James Posey had 11 points and 6 rebounds. Glen Rice and Maurice Taylor combined to shot 0-10 FG. Taylor did have 9 rebounds including 7 offensive. Quotes Don Nelson: "I was real surprised how much energy we had. The fact that we had that emotional win Thursday night, coming up here I was worried all day about this game, but when Shawn Bradley plays that way we're pretty good." Nelson: "That's the biggest thing I'm looking for - consistent play out of the 5 spot. I have 3 guys I can throw in there. I used to have a 3-headed center, where everybody played about the same, but that's not the case here. Now, I'm playing 2 of them and usually 1 of them is giving us solid play." Nelson on Bradley: "Shawn made 3 or 4 jumpers that really helped. He shot them like he's supposed to, because he can make that shot - the 16- to 17-foot jumper. ... He hasn't been making it that much this year. But he focused in and really made shots tonight." Dirk Nowitzki: "We always try to be the aggressor. When you're the aggressor every night you're going to get breaks. It's a good shooting building. I've always liked to come here and play. There are always a lot of Mavs fans. It's a lot of fun.'' Nowitzki when told this is the last season for the Compaq Center: "Oh don't tell me that. Are you serious? This is a good shooting building and I've loved playing here." Nowitzki on playing the day after the San Antonio win: "It was a tough win yesterday and we wanted it to carry over. In the beginning, we were turning the ball over and weren't shooting very well. But once we got our offense going, we were okay." Steve Nash on Bradley: "If Shawn plays as well as he did tonight, we can beat anybody. For us to win a championship, it's crucial. For us to have the best record in the league, it's not as crucial. But no one in the locker room is happy with ending up with the best record in the league and not winning the championship. So hopefully Shawn can summon the energy and toughness to provide us with what he provided us with tonight. I think everyone can see the difference and everyone can see the effect he has on our team." Nash on Bradley's outside shots: "He can get those shots most of the time. Usually, the defense would rather leave him than the rest of us." Shawn Bradley: "We were able to get a lead and keep it. [Yao] got his points, but he didn't get them until the end of the game when we had a good lead and the game was over. We knew we had to step up defensively. We couldn't give them a lead and hope to come back." Bradley: "I just wanted to come out and play aggressively and do positive things to help the team. Raef got into foul trouble, and he's played Yao well in the past. But we were able to come out and do the little things early and get a lead. Yao's a good player. He got his in the end. But by the time he was able to get most of his points, it was a decided game." Bradley: "I wanted to do positive things to help my team win. We knew we had to step it up defensively, and we were able to do it across the board." Bradley: "I understand that I have to do things the team needs me to do. Everyone on this team knows his role." Raef LaFrentz on Bradley: "Shawn was great. When he plays like that, it gives us a whole new dimension defensively." Rudy Tomjanovich: "I liked a lot of the shots we had in the 1st quarter, we were running and got some easy buckets. But in the 2nd half, we didn't get the percentage inside like we normally do. Bradley had something to do with that." Tomjanovich: "How could anybody not be impressed with what they're doing? They're so hard to defend ... all over the floor." Tomjanovich on holding a practice on Thursday, the day after a back-to-back: "99% of the time we wouldn't hold a workout in that situation. But I couldn't have slept well without it. They make you prepare for so many different things." Tomjanovich: "Nowitzki feels comfortable anywhere on the floor. There's no place where he's a low percentage player." Steve Francis: "We always play them well early, but we couldn't hit shots when we needed them, and I think that really devastated us." Francis on his sore back: "It's pretty sore. I thought I could help my team. I'm not going to lie, I was definitely a couple steps slow tonight. Sometimes you have to play when you're hurt." Yao Ming: "This is something for me to learn from. I don't get many opportunities to play against someone as tall as me. In the 2nd half, I did okay; but in the 1st half, I played pretty poorly." Ming: "Every time I play I think I get a little more accustomed. Starting the 2nd half, I felt I learned some things." Maurice Taylor: "They kicked our butt. They are the better team 4 straight times. We can't say what we didn't do. We can't say what they did do. They're the better team. They shot the ball better. They passed the ball better. We have to give them credit. Right now, they're the best team in the league. They're a great team. Obviously, if you lose to a team 4 times by that much, you definitely have to go to work. You can't be content or complacent and say 'okay, we're still a good team.' No. Not after being beat by one team 4 times the way they beat us." Taylor, speculating about a playoff meeting: "We want to see them again, and if we see them again, the stakes are going to be a lot higher. We can't play the way we played the last times we saw these guys. And if we see them again, we can't get caught up like a deer in the headlights."
