I heard a new bit of information the other day from Don Nelson that I never heard before regarding trading the #6 draft pick for the #9 and #19 in the 1998 draft (Dirk Nowitzki pick). I had heard that money was one reason for the trade and the #19 was used as part of the Nash trade, but I never heard it as detailed and plain spoken as this. Nelson on the radio the other day said that trading down was purely money. Ross Perot and Frank Zaccanelli wanted the team to be in the black (make a profit) and the team was slightly in the red. By trading down 3 spots (rookie salaries are based on where they are picked) and with the money Milwaukee included as part of the trade, Dallas saved about $1 million and that put Dallas in the black. Nelson called it one of the dumbest things he's ever done and that he would never do it again - risking a player that the team really like for a measly million, which Perot and Zaccanelli could easily afford. Game 2: Portland at Dallas (April 23) Portland started the game short handed as starter Scottie Pippen did not play due to soreness in his left knee (he had surgery on the knee a month ago) and lost another starter as Derek Anderson left the game 3 minutes in with a strained left knee. [Neither player did much in the 1st game as the 2 combined for 5 points on 2-11 FG.] The game stayed really close (but it was ugly with lots of missed shots and turnovers) as neither team led by more than 4 points and there were 11 lead changes and 6 ties. A runner and 3-pointer by Nick Van Exel gave Dallas a 23-19 lead after 1. Both teams hovered around 41% FG and the 2 teams combined for 11 turnovers. A 3-pointer by Steve Nash followed by a 3-pointer by Van Exel gave Dallas their largest lead at 31-21 with 9:15 remaining. Buckets by Arvydas Sabonis surrounded a dunk by Bonzi Wells to pull Portland within 29-33 with 5:30 to go. Dallas held a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. The teams traded 3-pointers to close the quarter and Dallas led 48-42 at the half. The teams continued to struggle shooting as Dallas shot 41.9% FG and Portland shot 44.1% FG. Wells had 18 points while Dirk Nowitzki, coming off a career high 46 points, had just 12 points including 4-16 FG. Dallas continued to hold a single-digit lead and a 3-pointer by Michael Finley gave Dallas a 58-49 lead with 7 minutes to go. Portland chipped away at Dallas' lead, mostly from the free throw line, and a 3-pointer by Wells tied the game at 62-62 with 4 minutes left. The teams traded buckets and Van Exel nicely fed Shawn Bradley for the layup (his only bucket of the game) and Nash hit a jumper to put Dallas up 68-64 with 2:10 to go. A 3-pointer by Rasheed Wallace pulled Portland within 71-72 after 3. The 3rd quarter was marred by some terrible officiating. Both teams were playing physical and taking the ball inside, yet Portland only got called for 2 teams fouls while Dallas was whistled for 10 and Portland shot 12-17 FT [only 1 less than Dallas shot all game] while Dallas shot just 2-2 FT during the quarter. However, the poor officiating did lead to a very exciting 4th quarter. Portland continued their mini-run (they scored the last 5 points of the 3rd quarter) by scoring the first 4 points of the 4th quarter to go up 75-72 with 10:40 remaining - their first lead since late in the 1st quarter. Finley was fouled on the break and the ref called a clear path foul (1 free throw and possession) and Finley hit the free throw and followed that up with a 3-pointer to put Dallas back up 76-75 with 9:45 left. Wells hit a jumper and Zach Randolph hit 1 of 2 free throws as Raef LaFrentz collected his 6th foul with 8:45 remaining. Nash drained a 3-pointer to put Dallas back up, Wells drove for 2 to put Portland up, and another 3-pointer by Nash gave Dallas an 82-80 lead with 7 minutes left. The teams traded buckets and Wallace airballed a _wide_ open 3-pointer with 5:40 to go [I couldn't believe he missed it, much less airballed it]. Van Exel hit a runner and the team would trade 2 points (with one trade of 3-pointers) over the next 6 possessions for each team and Dallas led 97-93 with 2:10 remaining. Wells had a rare miss with 1:50 left, but Dale Davis got the rebound and Jeff McInnis drove for 2 with 1:40 left. Nowitzki was stripped inside, but Eduardo Najera tied up McInnis and won the jumpball to prevent the change of possession. Nowitzki was fouled shooting with 1:07 left, but only hit 1 of 2 free throws and Dallas led 98-95. Wells missed again, but Davis was again there for the rebound under the basket and he made the layup and was fouled. He hit the extra free throw to tie the game at 98-98 with 48 seconds to go. Dallas ran the pick-and-pop with Nash and Nowitzki and nearly turned the ball over when Nash's pass went behind Nowitzki, but Nowitzki got the ball and passed it back to Nash, who rose up and drained the 3-pointer with 29 seconds left as Davis got switched on him and gave him room. Portland called their last timeout and advanced the ball to halfcourt. And Nash made the mistake of fouling Wells shortly after the ball was inbounded. Wells hit the 1st one, but missed the 2nd and Finley snagged the rebound. After Nash brought the ball over halfcourt, he was fouled and hit both free throws with 14.5 seconds remaining to give Dallas a 103-99 lead. Portland quickly brought the ball up and Wallace missed a 3-pointer, they got the rebound and McInnis missed a 3-pointer, and Najera got the rebound and time expired. Afterwards, Wells grabbed the ball and punted into the stands [and it was a bit of time before a police officer was able to retrieve the ball from the fans as the Mavs wanted the game ball]. Dallas won 103-99. It was a very exciting finish, but it wasn't a pretty game until the last 5 minutes or so. The 1st half was marred by poor shooting and sloppy play by both teams and the 3rd quarter was dominated by the officiating. But the 4th quarter shone with clutch shot after clutch shot. Dallas scored on their last 12 possessions and Portland scored on 11 of their last 13 possessions. In the 4th, Dallas shot 10-14 FG including 5-6 3-pointers and Portland shot 11-21 FG including 1-6 3-pointers. For the game, Dallas shot 48.7% (38-78) FG including 12-25 3-pointers and Portland shot 47.1% (33-70) FG including 7-16 3-pointers. Portland had an major advantage at the line in shooting 26-37 FT [11 misses in a 4 point loss] while Dallas shot 15-18 FT. The rebounds were even at 38 and neither team was sharing the ball much as Dallas had 20 assists and Portland had just 15 assists [and with both teams around 100 points, those are _very_ low numbers]. The teams did get control of their 1st quarter turnover problem as they combined for just 16 turnovers in the last 3 quarters after having 11 in the 1st quarter. Dallas leads the series 2-0 and the games head to Portland for 2 games. Game 3 is Friday at 9:30 pm in Portland. Unlike Game 1, Dallas had a balanced scoring attack in this game. Steve Nash was the hero [despite that dumb foul] of the game with the tie-breaking 3-pointer and 2 free throws. He had his circus shots falling and should have shot more than he did - it seemed the tougher the shot, the more likely it was going to go in. He had a team high 28 points including 10-14 FG and 5-6 3-pointers and 8 assists. 11 of his points came in the 4th quarter where he shot 3-4 3-pointers. Dirk Nowitzki didn't have his shot falling, but that didn't stop him from shooting. He put up enough shots (8-25 FG) to get 25 points and had 9 rebounds - all defensive. He did improve his shooting in the 2nd half as he shot 4-9 FG. Michael Finley chipped in 17 points and 7 rebounds [he's still not aggressive enough to the basket]. The big man duo of Raef LaFrentz and Shawn Bradley were ineffective this night, largely due to foul trouble. LaFrentz had 6 points and 3 rebounds in 20 minutes and Bradley had 3 points including 1-5 FG (some ugly misses, including 2 baseliners that he normally hits (but he was fading away on one of them)) and 6 rebounds in 24 minutes. Both fouled out and neither had a block (in fact, no Mav had a block). But the Mavs got a very nice boost off the bench from Nick Van Exel and Eduardo Najera. The 2 joined the big 3 in being on the court at the end of the game. Najera gave the hustle and energy that we all love with 12 points including 5-6 FG, 6 rebounds including 4 offensive, and 3 steals in 35 minutes. Van Exel didn't jack up too many shots and passed the ball around a lot in this game [the Mavs win when he gives performances like this]. Van Exel had 12 points and 6 assists in 31 minutes. Adrian Griffin was the only other Mav to see playing time and was on the court for just 7 minutes. Bonzi Wells was awesome. He drove to the basket, he hit the open shots, he hit the contested shots, and he drained the impossible shots. The Mavs could do nothing to stop him (Nowitzki was on him the most and I could tell early that that was not going to work). Wells had an opponent career high 45 points on 16-24 FG, 5-6 3-pointers, and 8-11 FT. He also had 3 steals (but no assists and 4 turnovers). 18 of his points came in the 4th quarter when he tried to carry his team. He didn't get any help, though. Rasheed Wallace was the only other Blazer in double-digits with 18 points, but he shot just 6-17 FG and had just 3 rebounds. Dale Davis was a monster on the boards with 15 rebounds including 6 offensive to go with his 7 points. Damon Stoudamire had 9 points including 2-7 FG, 5 rebounds, and 5 assists. After sitting all the 1st game, Antonio Daniels did provide some boost with 7 points including 3-4 FG in seeing playing time due to the injuries. Jeff McInnis only had 2 points on 1-6 FG, 4 assists, and 3 turnovers in 25 minutes. Zach Randolph remained quiet with 3 points and 3 rebounds in 11 minutes and Arvydas Sabonis had 6 points and 2 rebounds in 10 minutes. Ruben Patterson didn't score in 8 minutes and Derek Anderson stole the opening tip and took it in for the quick layup for his only points before leaving the game 3 minutes later with an injury. Having officiated in the worst (Sacramento 3/2) and the 3rd worst (this one) officiated games I've seen this season and as a major contributor to the bad calls and non-calls in both games, Bennett Salvatore should not be permitted to officiate any more Mavs games. Quotes Don Nelson: "It was a heck of a game. I was sitting in the hot seat, so I didn't enjoy it as much as some. There were a lot of big shots being made by both team, left nothing on the floor, burned it all up. We witness a magnificent performance by Bonzi. And a very gutsy performance by their team. They lost a couple of players and they hung in there and had a chance to win. My guys struggled some. I thought they made it a very physical game and it took its toll on us. But we were able to make shots down the stretch to win. We ran good stuff and got the ball to players who can make shots and when they are put into that position, that pressure position, most of the time they're successful. Nash, of course, was a guy who made most of it happen, whether it was by pass or by shot. He was even my defender when we went box-and-one on Bonzi a couple of times. He was the guy that was assigned to him. I don't know that anybody did a good job, but at least he did his job, which was to deny him the ball and make it difficult. It was a hard game for us because of the foul discrepancy. But those things happen and I'm glad I kept telling my team that we can rise above the discrepancy and still win the game and stay focused and just keep running our stuff and try not to complain to the referees - we did a little bit tonight, but I think at least we didn't over do it to the point where it took us out of our game. So we feel very fortunate to get the 2nd win and now we'll go up there and see what's that all about." Nelson: "I thought that not only did they make the game physical, they spoke about it in the days off that we had here that they were going to make it a physical game and they did. They played very aggressively and I think they were into our shots quite a lot. I don't mind that kind of play, but I think they also were going after Dirk's elbow on his shot. I've never seen Dirk shot 3 or 4 airballs before, but yet if you get hit on the elbow, that's very difficult to shoot them. I thought that was part of their plan to be physical and go after the elbow and when that's not called, it makes the shooter look pretty bad. But, finally, we got one of those elbow calls down the stretch and that was a big call. But I think there were 4 or 5 that they missed and that made it a hard night for Dirk." Nelson on Finley: "Mike had 17 points tonight and I'm not calling his number that much. I think it's better that he just stays in the flow and kind of keys his scoring off of others. I don't know that he's ready to dominate his man yet. But yet he's doing a really nice job of finding his shots and making his shots when he has them, sliding into areas where he can be aggressive offensively. It gives us confidence. The better he plays, the more confidence we have as a team." Nelson: "Well, I think we better start calling it the Big 4. I think Nick is pretty darn good player too that fits in that category. He doesn't get enought credit as far as I'm concerned. I have the ball in Nash's hands an awful lot, but every time I put it in Nick's hands and make Steve an off-shooter, we're equally as successful and some times more successful because Nash is a pure shooter and Nick is a shot maker. So when the time is right, I like to do that and that has been very successful too. I didn't do that tonight because I thought Nash was having an extraordinary night." Nelson on balanced scoring: "Yes, I was pleased. I thought Dirk should have maybe a few more assists. I thought in the 1st half when he was struggling that he could have gone to his pass a few times more. We want him to be dominating because we really do need him to score, especially when Mike is still not 100%. So I don't ever want him to do that, but I thought the pass was there a few times in the 1st half, but he did everything in the 2nd half. He found the open guy and did a lot of really good things and stayed competitive in the whole game. You know, rebounded on the defensive end. He was really into the game, even though his scoring wasn't quite there." Nelson on going for a 2-for-1 at the end of the game: "Yes, did we do it? [Yes.] We wanted a shot at about 36 or 34 seconds, is where you want it. And I thought we'd have a play run and I thought that if we would run the play, then we'd get it right about there, just automatic. I don't remember now what the shot clock was, but, yes, that was definitely was a 2-for-1 situation. The hard thing is when you get the ball in the back court at about 35 - can you get a good shot in a 2-for-1 'cause you just don't want a shot that's thrown up. But, ya, we do the 2-for-1 when we can." Michael Finley: "We knew coming into the game that this was going to be a lot tougher game than game 1. And it was nothing less than that. They battled us for 48 minutes and we were going back and forth. Nobody seemed to truly have control of the game, just fortunate enough for us we had the lead when the time ran out. But we knew it was going to be that type of game. We just had to keep our composure through adverse situations, whether it was calls or missed shots or defensive lapses. We just had to stay together as a team. I think that was one of the main reasons we were able to overcome the little deficit we were in and get the win." Finley on Wells: "Bonzi is a pretty good player. He's a young guy who's continued to improve each and every year in this league and I know what he's capable of. It was similar to Dirk the last game. Their line was very similar. But unfortunately for them but fortunately for us, we won without one of our guys having a big game. We tried different defenses, but he was just in a good zone. I'm just glad that time ran out." Finley on Nash at the end: "Well, Steve has been doing that for us all year. Pretty much in the 2nd half, he picks and choses his points to make an impact - sometimes it's early in the 3rd quarter, sometimes it's late in the 4th quarter, and tonight it was just timely baskets for us, big 3s at the end. When we were in a little bit of an offensive lull, he was able to step up and hit 3s and give us a little cushion. And that gave us a little bit of a sigh of relief knowing that if we came down and got some key stops, we could pretty much seal the game." Finley on Van Exel and Najera: "Well, they came in and gave us an added boast off the bench. I think if we want to go far in the playoffs, our bench will have to contribute throughout the playoffs. And they did that tonight. They came in and Nick hit some big shots for us and Eddie was able to scrap in inside and get some key rebounds and tip outs and do all the things that make Eddie very valuable for our team. So if everybody plays complete team basketball, everybody who gets a chance to play contributes in some way, shape, or form, we pretty much give ourselves a good chance to win." Finley on a balanced team: "That's what makes us one of the better teams in the league. I think we're not just a one headed monster, so to speak. We have guys who are capable of going in for big numbers night in and night out. Fortunately enough for me, I don't have to have that type of pressure on me to go in and have big nights offensively and take a lot of the shots that would be forced or anything to find my rhythm. I can just as easily get my rhythm gradually and let those guys continue to do their thing and I'll eventually have my time to shine." Finley on playing in Portland: "It goes back to the importance of home court advantage, I think. I think for us, it has been very significant. One, to have the games here, open up the playoffs at home. Two, I think they had to stay in town because their plane broke down, so those little things like that play an important role in home court advantage. For us to go up to Portland and get a win, we're going to have to take our game up a level. If we play the same way, with the same intensity we have here, we can probably come up short. On the road, you have to take your game up another level and I think this team is capable of doing that." Steve Nash on his offense: "I think a lot of it is just what presents itself. You can glorify and say I came out and want to be aggressive and that's why I scored, but it's not always like that. Some nights you come out aggressive and things don't go your way and some nights you let the game come to you and it's perfect and sometimes you let the game come to you and you never really get in the game. Tonight I just had some opportunities early to take it to the basket and to be aggressive and to score and it kind of set the tone for me." Nash on the last minute of the game: "Bonzi was killing us and we tried to make it tough for him and he kind of pulled up over me and someone came to help and I think we forced a miss, but Dale collected the weak-side board and we tried to foul him, but he made the bucket and got a free throw - I can't remember if he made or miss. But then we went to the other end and we went for a pick-and-roll and it was kind of a broken play. I threw it to Dirk and he threw it back to me. And in the broken play, Davis ended up on me. It's a tough position for a big guy to be in - 35 feet from the basket, guarding a point guard. So it kind of worked in our favor and I was able to get some space for myself for a 3-pointer." Nash: "I think Dirk's game in the 1st [game] was an unbelievable performance. We've become accustomed to him playing incredibly, but that was one for the ages, in Mavericks history for sure. That can't happen every night. It's impossible. Tonight I don't think he had as big a night, but he drew as much attention and I think tonight was much more indicative of the balance that our team has. But we're going to rely on Dirk more too. He's our best player and he's going to provide us with a lot. He has to or we're not going to be as good of a team, we're not going to win as many games as we hope to win here." Nash on Pippen: "It depends on how he feels. It's a tough situation for him to be in, going through surgery as recently. It's incredibly difficult this time of year to go through surgery and try to get back not only your health, but your rhythm. This is a game of rhythm. When you're out of the lineup and not 100% it's really difficult to get your rhythm back. I don't envy his position. I don't know whether he is going to play much on the weekend, more or less or what the deal will be, but they pose a lot of problems. They have a lot of depth, whether it's the small guards in there. In some ways they make you pay different than Scottie. We have to stick to our game plan and do a good job no matter who's in the game." Nash on they physicalness: "I think it's been good playoff basketball. It's been fairly physically, nothing overly or overt. I think this has been a good first 2 games. It could pick up, but sometimes that's over blown. Sometimes guys are too busy trying to do their job than to try to make statements with their physicality. I think it's going to be a huge game for both teams. And, obviously with them having their home crowd behind them, they're going to have a lot of energy and they're really going to have an advantage to start and we're just going to have to weather that and really have a solid performance." Nash on winning close games: "We're a team that's been through this before now. I think we're prepared to win games that are close. I thought tonight was a really great example of now we've grown. Our mental thoughness I thought was outstanding, you know, we didn't get a lot of breaks and we stuck with it. A lot of teams, I think, would have self destructed, but we're really together and have a lot of chemistry and we stuck with and we held together and I think that is the main reason we won the game." Nash on being up 2-0: "It's extremely important. We have the advantage right now. Going up there, they're going to have the advantage on the game day, but I think that we will have this in the back of our mind that we've held our own court and that we've played well for 2 nights and we have a lot of confidence going up there. They have a lot more to lose than we do at this points and hopefully it will take some pressure off and will let us play near our best." Nash: "We're going to make them pay in some way. In game 1, Dirk was all over them. Tonight, Dirk was equally difficult to guard. He didn't really get any calls and didn't really make as many baskets, but he drawed as much and even more attention, and that is going to make it more difficult. The funny thing was that they were actually doubling me on the pick-and-roll and leaving him open a lot of the game. They changed it up on us, but we were able to make some plays down the stretch." Nash: "The 1st game physically we were really tough and really stayed with it. And I think tonight mentally we were really tough, you know we weren't getting any bounces, let's just say that we weren't getting any breaks. And we just stuck with it mentally. There were times where a lot of teams might have deconstructed, but I think that we showed a lot of mental toughness tonight." Nash on Najera and Van Exel: "Those are huge parts of our team, those 2 guys. We can't do any of this without those 2 guys. They make the defense pay and they are tremendous players and tonight they showed it." Nick Van Exel: "We knew they were going to do everything they could to take the ball out of Dirk's hands. Steve took advantage of that." Van Exel: "This is pretty big for our confidence. Very huge. It was a very huge game for us tonight. After that loss, a lot of them were going to come out more aggressive. We expected some of their guys who didn't do as much in Game 1 to really assert themselves a little more." Eduardo Najera: "They gave us their best shot. I think tonight Steve Nash came through big. That's why we have 3 all-stars. We don't know who's going to score 35 or 40 points on a given night." Najera: "The truth is, they guarded Dirk. They had 2 or 3 guys on him almost the whole night." Maurice Cheeks: "Opening statement? I'm tired of sitting here on the losing end. It was a heck of a game. It was a heck of a game that came down to defending the game, like we all knew at the start of the series that it would come down to defending the pick-and-roll. And they made some heck of a shots. Dirk made some heck of a shots. Steve made the last heck of a shot. Pretty much, that's what the game came down to. I think we played a pretty smart game for the most port. We made shots, we attacked the rim, and it came down to defending the pick-and-roll. And obviously they came out on top because they made the play at the end." Cheeks on Pippen: "It was a game time decision. We was going to wait and see how he felt, whether or not he could play. And he didn't. But our other guys played well. I think they stepped up. I think they took the challenge. Like I said, it was a heck of a game." Cheeks on Pippen: "I'll take his status as game-by-game. If he's ready to play, then we'll deal with it then. If he's not ready to play, I think we'll go with the guys that we have, obviously. And I think the guys that we have can do a credible job. We can't take anything away from the players that we have that's out there playing. Scottie is a big part of our defense, particularly if, like he's out there tonight, we have guys that can switch and do things like that. I think as it boiled down to, we still had to be able to defend the pick-and-roll with Steve Nash and Dirk Nowitzki. I'd love to have Scottie, but if he's not there, we got to deal with the guys we have." Cheeks on Pippen: "He's 6-8. That's the main thing - he's 6-8. When you have Steve Nash and you have Dirk out there, either guy can switch and guard Steve and can guard Dirk out on the floor. I think that's the biggest place where we miss him at. I think tonight it came down to that same case where they were running that screen-and-roll, the side screen-and-roll and it came down to being able to defend it. And that last shot Steve made was a big shot. It was a pretty good shot over a stretched arm of Dale Davis." Cheeks on Wells: "I told them to get out of the way. Just try to get the ball in his hands and move out of the way and not get in his way. The same thing with Bonzi. When he's attacking the rim and making his jump shots, he's a tough player to guard." Cheeks: "The way I look at it, the Mavericks did what they were supposed to do - they defended their home court. We were looking to come in here looking to possibly get one, but we didn't get it. Now we've got to go home and defend our court." Bonzi Wells on keys down the stretch: "They made every shot, we didn't. They made big play after big play. They screen-and-rolled well and Nash just hit 3 or 4 big 3s that really broke our back. They did play well as a team." Wells: "Any time you lose, it's tough to lose, but being down 2-0 really makes it tough because now we're really fighting our way out of the hole. We got to go back down to Portland and secure 2 victories to make our way back down here. So that's our mind set right now. We got to take it 1 game at a time. But we're definitely trying to come back to Dallas." Wells on if they did anything different on Nowitzki: "We definitely tried to run guys at him, but I think they were ready for that. As soon as we ran guys at him, the guys were saved[??couldn't figure out this word]. Steve Nash played well. Nick Van Exel came off the bench and played well. Actually, they just moved the ball well and kind of exposed our defense at times. But we played well and if we get the same effort on Friday, we should win." Wells: "I was feeling good. My shot was going down. My teammates and my coaches have a lot of confident in me and my shots were just going down. I had a lot of confidence today. I felt like I was going good to the hole and hitting my shot and if I stay aggressive like that, I should hopefully have some more games like this." Wells: "Coach has always been talking about us going to the hole and it's just up to us to do. At halftime, guys really made a conscious effort of telling guys we need to go to the hole, we need to quit letting these guys just stand in the line and just not really playing any defense, we need to put some pressure on them. Myself and guys were just trying to go to the hole to make them foul us and try to get the buckets." Antonio Daniels: "I don't think they took our best shot by any stretch of the imagination. We're down 0-2. ... We just have to go home and take care of business."
