Game 4: Dallas at Portland (April 27) Portland was again without Scottie Pippen (sore left knee) and Derek Anderson (knee surgery) and Arvydas Sabonis was unable to go due to back spasms. Neither team looked sharp in the 1st quarter - both were playing equally poorly to keep it a close game. Dallas scored 5 straight points to go up 10-4 with 8:40 left, but Portland then went on a 16-4 run to go up 20-14 with 4:20 to go. A 3-pointer by Nick Van Exel ended Portland's run. Portland held a low single-digit lead the rest of the quarter and led 26-23 after. Dallas shot a mere 9-23 FG and committed 5 turnovers (they had all of 6 total in the last game). Portland again feasted at the line as they shot 10-16 FT and constantly attacked the basket - Dallas 3 big men (including Evan Eschmeyer, seeing his first action of the series) each had 2 fouls in the quarter. For some reason, Portland stopped attacking the basket as much in the 2nd quarter and they didn't attempt a free throw during that quarter. The game stayed really close during the 2nd quarter (and both teams still didn't look sharp) with neither team holding more than a 4 point lead. Van Exel banked in a 3-point runner from just inside the halfcourt line at the quarter buzzer to give Dallas a 52-49 lead at the half. It was a 2-man show during the quarter as Dirk Nowitzki had 17 of Dallas' 29 points and Bonzi Wells had 11 of Portland's 23 points. For the half, Dallas shot 46.5% FG including 4-11 3-pointers and Portland shot 40% FG including 3-6 3-pointers. Portland shot 10-16 FT and Dallas shot 8-9 FT. Unfortunately, Van Exel's 3-pointer was the last positive for Dallas as they came out and put up a stinker for the 3rd quarter. After trading 2 points to open the quarter, Portland scored the next 8 points to go up 59-54 with 8 minutes remaining. Nowitzki hit a jumper and Adrian Griffin hit a jumper to pull Dallas within 58-59 with 6:30 left. Dallas would not score again until 30 seconds left in the quarter. Portland again took the ball inside and Dallas could do nothing to stop them and couldn't score themselves as the Mavs missed 10 straight shots. Portland rattled off a monster 21-0 run - on 3 dunks, 2 layups, and 11-13 FT - to take a commanding 80-58 lead with 40 seconds remaining. Portland led 82-62 after 3. Zach Randolph had 12 points in the quarter. Dallas only shot 4-19 FG and Portland shot 14-17 from the line. Portland out-scored Dallas 33-10 in the 3rd quarter. Seeing his team's pathetic performance, Don Nelson pulled the plug early as Nowitzki and Steve Nash (who had _nothing_ this night) did not play in the 4th quarter. Michael Finley (who also had nothing) played some to try to find his game and Portland's starters continued to play. Dallas got no closer than 18 points during the 4th quarter. It was an ugly 4th though, as the 2 teams combined for just 33 points and Portland shot 4-15 FG and Dallas shot 7-21 FG. Portland won 98-79. Yuch. Dallas showed that they are still capable of putting out crappy performances in Portland. The team played poorly in the 1st half and I was surprised that they held the lead at halftime with the way that they played. And they played even worse during the 3rd quarter. It was a record setting 3rd quarter as 10 points was the fewest Dallas had ever scored in _any_ quarter during the playoffs [and they're lucky the team doesn't keep more detailed quarter records, otherwise more records likely would have fallen]. The 27 points in the 2nd half was also the fewest Mavs points in a playoff half - and they broke it by 6 points. For the game, Dallas shot just 37.3% (31-83) FG including 5-20 3-pointers. How bad was it? Dallas only had 2 fast break points. Portland only shot slightly better, but had a huge (and warranted) advantage at the free throw line. Portland shot 41.3% (31-75) FG including 6-15 3-pointers. The Blazers shot 30-42 FT while Dallas shot just 12-13 FT. Portland continually attacked the basket, especially in the 1st and 3rd quarters, while Dallas rarely went inside. Dallas actually out-rebounded Portland 44-43, but it didn't mean anything in this game. Dallas was also sloppy with the ball in committing 15 turnovers [yes, for other teams that would be a good number, but for Dallas it is not] while Portland had just 8 turnovers. It was just an ugly game by Dallas. The team seemed not to have an "oh well, we're still up 3-1" attitude after the game - every player I heard speak sounded very disappointed - so maybe this will be a motivation not to have any more duds like this. Hopefully the team got all the crappiness out of their system. As disappointing of a performance as this game was, Dallas did achieve a split in Portland and is still one win away from advancing. Dallas needs to take care of business on Wednesday and end this series before Portland regains the feeling that they are still in this series. Not finishing it in 4 games did have some small bonuses: it prevented talk of how a long layoff between game 4 and the 1st game of the 2nd round might hurt the team (game 1 wouldn't have been until Sunday or later) and the franchise will earn more money with another home game. Game 5 is Wednesday in Dallas at 7:30 pm on channel 21 and TNT. No Mav showed up besides Dirk Nowitzki and Nick Van Exel, and they didn't have enough this night to carry the team. Nowitzki had 26 points - 22 in the 1st half - and 11 rebounds. Van Exel had 18 points and 7 assists. The 2 combined (4 each) for 8 of Dallas' 10 3rd quarter points. That's it. No other Mav was in double-digits. Steve Nash and Michael Finley were no-shows. Nash had a donut on 0-4 FG, just 3 assists, and 4 turnovers in 21 minutes. Finley had 7 points on 3-12 FG, 5 rebounds, and 3 assists in 28 minutes. Both sat for good chunks during the 1st 3 quarters as it was obvious that neither had anything going. The big men were all rendered ineffective by foul trouble. Raef LaFrentz had 4 points on 2-7 FG and 4 rebounds in 21 minutes. Shawn Bradley had 6 points on 3-5 FG and 3 rebounds in 16 minutes. Evan Eschmeyer had 0 points and 3 rebounds in 15 minutes. Eddie Energy didn't show up either as Najera had 0 rebounds in his 24 minutes. Adrian Griffin showed some hustle during his limited time with 2 points and 5 rebounds in 15 minutes. Raja Bell got a handful of minutes earlier in the game, coming in for Finley, but most of his minutes were in the 4th quarter and he had 2 points in 17 minutes. Seeing their first playoff action, Walt Williams had 3 points and 7 rebounds and Tariq Abdul-Wahad had 4 points in the 4th quarter. On the other hand, Portland had a balanced attack and no one player dominated. The star of the game for them was 2nd year man Zach Randolph, who had been practically invisible during the first 3 games. Randolph started (a change from the first 3 games) and contributed a game high 25 points including 7-10 FT and 15 rebounds. 22 of his points came in the 2nd half. Rasheed Wallace started poorly (and got the early pull), but finished well with 23 points and 5 rebounds. Damon Stoudamire had 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 11 assists. Bonzi Wells joined the Mavs in not being able to find the bucket, but he jacked up enough shots (6-21 FG) to get 16 points. He also had 8 rebounds and 5 steals. And Dale Davis was the 5th Blazer in double-digits with 12 points including 8-13 FT and 6 rebounds. Quotes Maurice Cheeks: "I couldn't wait to get out here tonight [to the press conference]. That walk wasn't nearly as long as a walk as it was the other night. That was a game that we just came in with some intensity. I think Dallas being up 3-0, they had a little more relaxed attitude. Of course, they'd like to win the game, but I think their attitude was a little more relaxed. But I think our guys just stayed together, played hard, did the things - did that statement sound familiar, played hard. I just think our guys just played hard. I think we had a lot of intensity out there. Zach Randolph stepped in and played a huge game for us. I think Rasheed did a great job guarding Nowitzki. I thought Damon played one of his better games here. I think it was a collection of guys that played well here and just an overall team effort." Cheeks on Randolph starting: "When did I decided to tell you, right before the game. I decided last night. We all knew that Zach would play hard. That's the makeup of him as a player. I think that he just comes out and plays hard and he's going to make mistakes because he's a young player. The main thing he does when he plays in this game is he plays hard, rebounds the ball, and we know he is an offensive force. But we got to get him better at getting up and down the floor, running the floor. But we knew he'd play hard. We knew he'd give us a lot of energy." Cheeks: "No, I knew our guys would come out and play hard. I think they challenged themselves to come out and play the way they're capable of playing. And it's unfortunate that it's 3-1 now, but as I said before, this series is not over until one team wins 4 games. And that has to be a mindset of everyone in a 7 game series. You can't get bogged down until someone wins 4 games. I know everyone is, when we got down 3 games, everyone had said, 'The series is over. The series is over.' I've been around this a long time and it's not over until someone wins 4 games and you congratulate that team that wins 4 games." Cheeks: "I don't think there is an NBA franchise that comes on the floor when you're playing in the playoffs that takes the game lightly. No way would they do anything like that because anything can happen in a playoff series. A guy can get hurt in practice, a guy can get hurt in a game and turn the series around. So no way do I think they came in and took this game lightly." Cheeks: "We made shots, they missed shots. They're a dangerous offensive team. They score the ball with the best of people. They run the screen-and-roll with the best of people. Our defense was a little better. They missed a lot of shots. When Dallas is missing shots, you can get the ball up, you can push the ball up the floor and get some easy baskets. When Nowitzki is missing shots and Nash is missing shots and you're playing some aggressive defense and you're rebounding the ball, you can get some easy baskets." Cheeks on his 1st playoff win: "You have no idea how important it is to get that victory. More importantly, it was good for us to come out and put an effort out there, a complete effort, because I knew we're capable of doing it. It could have been a scenario where we came out and put an effort together, a complete effort together, and not win the ball game. And it was kind of what my message was to the players. Of course, we would all like to win the game, the 20,000 people in the building would love to have the game won, but more importantly that we came out and competed I think that was the most thing. But, obviously, winning the ball game was the most import thing, but compete, from top to bottom, we competed." Cheeks on Stoudamire: "I think it was one of his better performances while I've been here. I think he scored the ball when he had to. He controlled the middle of the paint in terms of getting on the pick-and-roll. I think that's a key for Damon. He's a small guy. I think when he penetrates and looks to dish, he's a much better player. It's been a growth season for Damon because he's been through the spectrum - he's started, he's had not played, he's come off the bench, he's done it all. And right now he's back to being a starting point guard, which is where he likes to be, and maybe not as comfortable as he would like to be because, to me, he is a better guy off the ball and right now we need him on the ball and we need his offensive play. What I told him before the game is that we need him to score the basketball and he's good at doing it, but right now, we need him to run a point guard position. And tonight he did it as well as anyone." Cheeks on Randolph: "Zach's good. I said earlier, Zach is one of our more productive players because he rebounds, he scores in the paint, and his energy up lifted the team. Any time you put him in the game, he's just ready. He's a guy that comes in and is not afraid of anybody. He will score the ball, rebound the ball with the best of the guys in the league. He's there, he's right there to almost become a star. We got to get some minutes for him." Cheeks: "What went right? We made shots and they didn't make shots. When they're missing shots and we're getting rebounds off those misses, it leads to easy baskets. The big thing though is that we came out from the beginning and competed." Rasheed Wallace: "It was a good game and both teams played hard." [This was his answer to 3 different questions.] Wallace: "Both teams played hard. God bless and good night." [This was the answer to the 4th question addressed to him and the reporters stopped asking him questions. (Wallace doesn't like talking to reporters.)] Bonzi Wells: "We came out and played a full 48 minutes. We just didn't play 24 or 36. We put together a full 48 minutes offensively and defensively, especially defensively." Ruben Patterson: "We knew we needed this win and we just played hard. A lot of guys played hard, knowing we didn't want to get swept. Zach played well for us and we just came out in the 3rd quarter with a lot of fire." Zach Randolph on when he found out he was starting: "Coach told me yesterday at practice. [What did you think?] I just had to get ready. Prepare myself to come on to the court and do what he wanted me to do." Randolph: "I felt I played good tonight, helped the team out, and did what the coaches wanted me to do - rebound, score the basketball, run the court. And I just tried to go out there and do what they wanted me do do." Randolph on his improved defense: "It got a lot better. I think defense comes with playing." Randolph: "It was important for us. We didn't want to get swept. We just wanted to come out and win and play hard." Randolph: "The 3rd quarter, we knew we had to come out on top of our game or else they'd did us like they did us the other game. So we already knew what they could do, so we just had to come out and play hard." Randolph: "We all believe. We just got to believe and just believe in ourselves and don't worry about what anyone else thinks and just stick with the team and play hard." Damon Stoudamire: "It seemed like they figured they were going to sweep us, period. And I felt tonight like [Nelson] tried to concede the game when we went up by 20 after 3 quarters, putting in all his subs, like 'We're not trying to win this.' Well, we are still in a hole, obviously, but they have something to think about now." Stoudamire: "It has been a crazy year. I just kept on working and kept believing in myself. I never lost faith in myself." Stoudamire: "We got the jinx off our back. Nobody gave up. Nobody wanted to go home. We were able to get that big run in the 3rd quarter. We have been down 1-3 in a series before. The last time, we won games 5 and 6 by 20 points and were ahead in the 4th quarter of game 7. There's no quit in us, I'll tell you that." Stoudamire on Randolph: "Zach is so anxious when he plays, but that's good. He brings a youthfulness to this team we haven't had in a long time - the way he plays the game, the way he is a ball magnet, the way he moves without the ball. Zach likes to go down in there and do a little dirty work." Dale Davis: "Dallas wants to close it out as quickly as possible. The hardest game is the one to close out a series. This will show what we're made of, and I don't think they'll take us for granted." Davis: "Getting swept would have been tough to swallow, no question. We didn't want to go out like that. The series is not over until one team wins 4 games. Nobody has ever come back from 0-3 to win, but we can't worry about that. All we can do is take it one game at a time and build some momentum." Don Nelson: "Well, first of all, congratulations to coach Cheeks and the Blazers. They out-played us. I thought we were very lucky to even be close at halftime, and yet we even had a 3-point lead. And I thought if we could play a lot better in the 2nd half, we'd have a chance to win this game, but things got worse and made my job a little easier going into the [4th] period when I thought it was time to give my bench some minutes and save what ever we were trying to save for another day. 3rd period, I don't know what to tell you. I was very disappointed with our performance. I just didn't have much life out there, for what ever reason. I thought we were out-hustled, out-played, and out-everythinged in the 3rd quarter. In the 4th quarter, I decided that we should wait for another day. I thought he got a great performance out of his starters and they played well together. Got us in foul trouble. Got to the free throw line 42 times and most of them were deserved. I don't think we guarded in that 3rd period and didn't seem much interested in moving the ball - when we put on a clinic in the game before with ball movement, crisp passing, and kind of play that made me proud of them, and for whatever reason, decided it a different style. It wasn't as successful. So, anyway, I've been disappointed before. We will regroup. And we'll play the day after tomorrow." Nelson on Nowitzki: "We were trying to get somebody else involved a little more. I thought we needed that and it never came. I think he could have had another big night if I would have played him [in the 4th], but I thought at this particular time - being 20 down going into the 4th - I didn't see enough life in my team to make a run, or I would have played him. I thought I would save him and his energy for another day." Nelson: "Dirk's young. He wasn't tired. He was one of my players who competed. He and Van Exel tried to carry the team. My big guys got into foul trouble because we weren't guarding people on the perimeter. It wasn't their fault as much as it was keeping people in front of us. When my big lineup got in trouble, I tried a few things and nothing seemed to be very successful, although I thought Adrian Griffin played terrific when I played him. Mike had no rhythm tonight and Steve had no rhythm. I don't know why, but that's just the way it was, so I had to coach that game. It was just a lost game for them, that they didn't show up." Nelson on Finley: "Something was wrong last night, he was sick. Yet I was told he was okay at game time. I don't think that was the reason. He had either food poisoning and had a bad night and had the flu or something, but I was told he got over it today and he'd be ready to play. Obviously, he wasn't. He asked me if he could go in and play in the 4th quarter to get his rhythm, obviously he didn't have any, and I thought that was a good idea. His hamstring is sound and I don't have a restriction on him minute wise. But I need a better performance." Nelson: "We had a lot of guys out there who competed, but relax or whatever you want to call it, not everybody was on the same page tonight, and that's the disappointing part. You go all these years, 10 or 12 years in a row, without making the playoffs, finally you get an opportunity to play in the playoffs and then you don't show up. That's disappointing." Nelson: "I think adjustments are on going. They started a different lineup. It wasn't anything that we hadn't seen. Those guys have played together in the 1st 3 games. When they start and play together for long, long periods of time, they create a different set of circumstances. I thought they played pretty well together. I thought we had a lot to do with them playing well together." Nelson on Randolph: "He's another long armed player, so they're a little longer at that position. He's an inside guy, doesn't try to fool anybody that he's going to be an outside player. So he's always working down there in the blocks, on the boards. I've always liked him a lot, even when he was in high school. He was one of the few high school players I had the chance to see. I thought he was going to be a good player and I think he is going to be a good player. He's getting a good opportunity now and he's doing very well." Nelson on the free throws: "I think it must be something we're doing or not doing. I don't think we can blame the referees every night, can we. I'm certainly not blaming the referees. I would say we better start guarding their perimeter people better, keeping them in front of us." Michael Finley on if it was the flu: "I'm fine. I just didn't play well." Finley on if the performances was due to being up 3-0: "I don't think so. Their starters out-played our starters and when that happens, it's a tough situation. That puts a lot of pressure on our bench. The starters didn't hold up our end of the bargain." Dirk Nowitzki: "I just thought they were way more aggressive. They took it to the paint. They got to the foul line, I don't know how many times, but almost 20 times and we just took jumpers. All of the sudden, nothing would go for us any more. We went cold at the wrong time. I think we were in the perfect position in the 1st half, we were right there where we wanted to be and then in the 3rd quarter we just went ice cold. If our jumper is not going, we're always going to have trouble because we don't really have a low post presence. So if we're not shooting the ball well, we're going to struggle." Nowitzki: "Their backs are against the wall. They wanted to show the homecourt, the fans, that they can still play basketball and that they can win games. We expected to get even more physical play than we did in the 1st 3 games and they gave us a hard fight. In the 3rd quarter, they played extremely well and ended up blowing us out." Nowitzki on Randolph: "Zach is a good player. He's always aggressive. He's around the rim, always looking for offensive rebounds, always stealing[??not sure of this word] under the basket. So he's going to have a great career in this league. He's playing hard in there. But I think we should be able to handle him better the next game. We'll see what happens." Nowitzki (guessing the question had to do with if Dallas relaxed for this game): "I didn't think so. As I said, in the 1st half, we approached it the same way as we did the 1st 3. Like I said, we were right there where we wanted to be. We were down a couple of points, but we always hung around. And at the end of the half, we were actually up. Like I said, we were right there and just that 3rd quarter was just a little disappointing. But I think we approached the game right. We just didn't perform well enough to win the game." Nowitzki: "Of course, we're happy we're up 3-1, no question. But if you look at it, they had a great shot to win both games in Dallas, so we can't be too satisfied with what we have. And that's why we really wanted to win this game today and close the series out, but one bad quarter shows what happens. We got to make sure we go home now and watch what we did wrong in the 3rd quarter and hopefully we come out different on Wednesday. But we're certainly happy we're up 3-1, but we can't be satisfied with what we got." Nowitzki on game 5: "It's huge. We don't want to build their confident even more, and I think we did that today. That's why we really focused and tried to close it out today. But they played well, extremely in the 3rd quarter. They're a good team, you have to give it to them. They won the game today and hopefully we can go home and close it out. We certainly don't want to come back because they are a pretty good home team. So we want to make sure we take care of business at home on Wednesday." Nowitzki: "I don't know. We just had a couple of turnovers. Everyone is allowed to have a bad game. That's about all I can say." Nowitzki on if the 3rd quarter difference was Portland's defense or Dallas just missing shots: "I think, me personally, I missed 5 or 6 shots, and those shots were just the ones I made in the 1st half. So I don't think they did anything differently, personally, but any time you miss your shots, you have to give them credit. They hung around. They contested it a little bit. So it's a little of both. I thought Nick had a couple of good looks that just didn't go down for him. We just went cold at the wrong time, I think." Nowitzki on if he's tired: "I feel great. The 1st round is really spread out. We had lots of rest and now we're not playing until Wednesday. I'm still young. I'm only 24 years-old, so my body's really able to recover quick from games. I played pretty much a lot of minutes the whole season round, so I don't really have a problem recovering from that. So I'm looking forward to a good game on Wednesday." Nowitzki: "It's tough. Nobody likes to lose. You should have been in the locker room - everybody just staring into places and it looked like we just lost the series and were out of the playoffs. That's how it looked in there. Of course, we're a little disappointed with that loss, no question, and to me it would be great if we played Monday or Tuesday at least, but now we have to wait on it, which shouldn't be a big deal. Just go home and get some rest and get a good practice on Tuesday and be ready Wednesday." Steve Nash: "We ruined a great opportunity. Luckily, we have another one on Wednesday. We were in the game at halftime, and I didn't think we could play much worse than we did in the 1st half. And then we did." Nash: "I give them a lot of credit, but at the same time, we were terrible. In particular I was, in a lot of ways, the key to the game by giving us nothing." Nash: I tried my best but I didn't play my best, and I think that was the key to the game. Tonight I did nothing. Next game I've got to try to do something to help my teammates." Nash on his performance: "Sometimes you just don't have it." Nick Van Exel: "Both teams didn't shoot the ball well. I think they attacked us a little more than we attacked them and they got to the free throw line, which was the biggest difference in the game." Van Exel: "I am very disappointed. We were right there at halftime and when we came out in that 3rd quarter, I thought we had some pretty good looks at the basket. The shots that we have been making, we just didn't make them tonight. They weren't making them in the beginning either, but I think that gave them a little confidence when we weren't making them." Van Exel: "I had wide open looks, Raef had wide open looks, Dirk had good looks, we all had good looks, but we just didn't knock them down. After a while, that team is going to get some kind of confidence and get rolling, and that is what they did. That was big for them." Van Exel: "We didn't even notice anything about Sabonis not being out there. Nobody ever said anything about it. I don't know if we had some kind of a let down, we just did not make shots." Van Exel on Nowitzki: "He did his job. He just didn't have his supporting cast with him tonight." Raef LaFrentz: "Credit them for coming out strong and playing a complete game. Our shots didn't fall and Dirk's the only guy that really played for us and it's a lot of weight to put on his shoulders." LaFrentz: "We'll focus on game 5, Wednesday's game and do everything we can to make sure it doesn't come back here." LaFrentz: "They played hard, they played good, and we didn't. Obviously, we got it taken to us tonight and Wednesday we'll have to play a little bit better." LaFrentz: "It's still 3-1. We still feel confident in what we're doing. We still feel like we have the right answers. We'll go out there again on Wednesday."
