Game 6: Dallas at Sacramento (May 15) It was a very ugly start to the game as both teams came out tight. The teams traded misses, Michael Finley got a layup, and it would be almost 3 minutes before either team would score again as the teams combined to miss 11 straight shots. Finley hit 2 free throws with 8:25 left and Sacramento finally got on the board on a layup by Hedo Turkoglu with 8:10 remaining. Sacramento continued to struggle and Dallas took their largest lead on a 3-pointer by Raef LaFrentz to go up 13-4 with 6 minutes to go. Sacramento finally started hitting some shots and went on a 10-2 run, capped by a 3-pointer by Peja Stojakovic, to pull within 14-15 with 3:30 left. Dallas continued to hold a single-digit lead the rest of the quarter. Doug Christie hit a jumper as the quarter ended. Dallas led 24-21 after 1. Dallas shot 9-21 FG and Sacramento shot 9-28 FG. Jim Jackson started the quarter with consecutive buckets to give Sacramento their first lead a minute into the 2nd quarter and the teams traded leads the next few minutes. A 3-pointer by Bobby Jackson gave Sacramento a 38-33 lead with 6:15 remaining and started a string where BJackson scored 9 straight King points - Dallas had answers, though, so Sacramento's lead got no larger than 7 points. But Nick Van Exel also had a string of his own and he scored 7 straight points, capped by a 3-pointer, to tie the game at 46-46 with 2:20 left. BJackson ended the run with a 3-pointer (and Van Exel scored Dallas' next basket to make it 9 straight Dallas points by Van Exel) and Sacramento's lead fluctuated between 1 and 3 points. Dallas had a mental collapse for the last 30 seconds of the quarter as they allowed Mike Bibby to drive for a quick layup, had a 24 second violation, and then with only 3 seconds left, allowed JJackson to take the basket coast-to-coast for the easy layup as the quarter ended. Sacramento led 57-52 at the half. It was the Jackson and Van Exel show in the 2nd quarter as BJackson had 12 points, JJackson had 10 points, and Van Exel had 14 points on 6-7 FG in the quarter. Sacramento shot an amazing 14-25 FG in the 2nd while Dallas was pretty good in shooting 11-19 FG. It was a complete defensive breakdown for Dallas in the half as they allowed a horrendous 38 points in the paint as Sacramento continually attacked the basket - take out the 8 free throws made and that means only 11 points (and 9 of those were from 3-pointers) came from outside shots. In addition, Dallas wasn't being aggressive on the boards and only had 1 offensive rebound. The game remained close in the 3rd quarter with Dallas unable to pull ahead and Sacramento unable to pull away. Sacramento took their largest lead at 89-80 with 1:20 to go, but Dallas scored the last 7 points of the quarter, capped by a floater by Van Exel at the buzzer. Sacramento led 89-87 after 3. Peja Stojakovic had 10 points, Van Exel had 12 points, and Finley had 10 points in the quarter. Dallas shot a strong 14-22 FG and Sacramento shot 10-21 FG in the quarter, but Sacramento shot 11-11 from the line while Dallas shot 4-6 FT. The teams came out slowly in the 4th quarter and a jumper by Van Exel tied the game at 89-89 with 10:25 to go. Another jumper by Van Exel gave Dallas a 95-94 lead with 8:15 left. But the Mavs went ice cold in missing 5 shots, missing a free throw, and committing 2 turnovers as they went scoreless over the next 4:20 and the Kings scored 9 straight points to go up 103-95 with 4:40 left. Sacramento's lead see-sawed between 6 and 8 points and Sacramento led 111-103 with 1:30 to go. The game wasn't quite over yet though as Steve Nash drained a 3-pointer, Vlade Divac missed, Van Exel missed but Raja Bell got the rebound, and Nash nailed another 3 to pull Dallas within 109-111 with 50 seconds left. Stojakovic missed an 18-footer with 29 seconds remaining and Walt Williams got the rebound to give Dallas a chance to tie the game or take the lead. The team did not use a timeout [despite my shouting for them to call one throughout the broken play] and brought the ball up and got the ball to Dirk Nowitzki in the post and he passed to Williams, who quickly passed to Nash and Nash drove across the free throw line, slipped, and passed across the court to Williams behind the 3-point line, and Williams' 3-pointer clanked off the back of the rim and BJackson grabbed the long rebound and was fouled. BJackson hit both free throws to seal the win. After a timeout, Nowitzki missed a 15-foot jumper and 2 free throws by JJackson capped the scoring. Sacramento won 115-109. It really wasn't a good game from Dallas and I was amazed that they were still in it at the end. Dallas' defense was just horrendous throughout the game and they could stop nothing in the middle - and Sacramento kept attacking that weakness. Sacramento had 58 points in the paint, and would have had many more if they hadn't blown a number of bunnies (especially early in the game). Dallas stayed in the game because Sacramento wasn't much better at defending Dallas' shooting. Besides the paint points, the game was won at the line as Sacramento only missed their first free throw and then proceeded to hit their next 31. Sacramento shot 31-32 FT and Dallas shot 19-22 FT. Dallas shot 48.8% (40-82) FG including 10-26 3-pointers and Sacramento shot 41.5% (39-94) FG including 6-17 3-pointers. In addition to their porous defense, the Mavs were not the aggressors in going after the rebounds or loose balls. Sacramento out-rebounded Dallas 47-38 including 15-6 offensive - having just 6 offensive rebounds is terrible. Sacramento played the better game and deserved the win, but they should have not left the door open and put Dallas away earlier [if Dallas had some how managed to get the win, this would have been a great example of a team stealing a win]. Despite Sacramento playing a better game, the game stayed close throughout and neither team led by more than 9 points. The series is now tied 3-3 and is down to a win or go home for the summer game 7 today in Dallas at 7 pm. In spoiling Mike Bibby's birthday by handing them a loss, turn about was fair play as Sacramento spoiled Don Nelson's birthday in defeating the Mavs. The Kings' stars were not those that you would have expected. Doug Christie continued his stellar play with 20 points including 10-11 FT, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. The Jacksons both played well and were on the court for most of the 4th quarter, despite being bench players. Bobby Jackson had 21 points including 9 in the 4th and Jim Jackson had 16 points and 12 rebounds including an amazing 7 offensive - and 9 of his rebounds came in the 4th quarter. Peja Stojakovic did have 24 points, but he shot just 7-20 FG. He also had 10 rebounds and 3 steals. Vlade Divac was able to stay out of foul trouble [the refs were letting a lot of contact go both ways in this game] and had 21 points, but just 3 rebounds, in 35 minutes. Mike Bibby and Hedo Turkoglu did not do much in this game and did not play down the stretch. Bibby had just 4 points on 2-7 FG and 3 assists in 25 minutes and Turkoglu had 7 points and 3 rebounds in 30 minutes. Keon Clark was the only other King who played and had 2 points and 5 rebounds in 7 minutes. Nick Van Exel came out and gave another great performance as he again topped the 30 point mark - making it 3 out of the 6 games this series he has done so. He finished with a game high 35 points on 15-23 FG and 5-11 3-pointers [if a guy is that hot, how can you claim to be a good defense team and not foul him once?]. It was a pure offensive game for him, though, as he only had 3 assists and 2 rebounds in his 37 minutes. Michael Finley also played well and continued his recent string of attacking the basket in addition to shooting from the outside. He had 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 4 assists in playing all but a handful of seconds. Dirk Nowitzki also had 21 points, but it was not a spectacular game despite the double-double. He shot just 5-14 FG, 0-3 3-pointers, and 11-12 FT and had 12 rebounds (all defensive), 3 assists, 3 steals, and 3 turnovers. He is the superstar of this team and they simply need more from him if the team is going to win game 7. Despite the 2 3-pointers near the end of the game, Steve Nash had a poor outing with just 15 points and 4 assists to go with his game high 5 turnovers. Raef LaFrentz had a nice outing with 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 blocks, despite his usual foul trouble, in 27 minutes. Raja Bell was the only other Mav to score with 2 points and 4 rebounds in 23 minutes. Walt Williams played 9 minutes and had 1 rebound and 2 blocks. Shawn Bradley had 3 rebounds in his 7 minutes and Eduardo Najera had 2 rebounds in 5 minutes. Regardless of if Dallas or Sacramento wins game 7, game 1 of the Western Conference finals starts Monday at 8:30 pm in San Antonio Quotes Rick Adelman: "Obviously I'm just really proud of our team. I think the attitude they showed the whole game, even after the start, when we just couldn't seem to make any shots no matter what it was, but they just persevered. I give Dallas credit. They kept making runs at us and we wouldn't fold. I think the biggest thing down the stretch is we made stops, and we got all the loose balls we needed to get, and we just kept working and as a result, we got a win, and now it's a 1-game series going back to Dallas. I'm really proud of our team, the way they responded, the way they reacted, the way they stayed together." Adelman on Jim Jackson: "I wasn't really happy with the technical at that time, but, yeah, Jimmy was playing great the whole game. The 1st half he came, he was the one guy throughout the whole game who kept coming up with big plays, loose balls, rebounds, whatever. I mean, he was just playing very, very hard, and he wouldn't quit. I think I loved the way he played the 1st half. I knew once I put him in the game I probably wasn't going to take him out the 2nd half, but he was just unbelievable. The different plays he made to keep the ball alive for us was just great." Adelman on the free throw shooting: "We're a pretty good free throw shooting team. Some guys struggle. You put Bobby out there and Mike and Doug and Peja and Hedo and Jimmy, they aren't going to miss very many free throws. That's all part of winning a close game. You got to do that. You've got to make those when they foul those." Adelman on Bibby sitting most of the 4th: "I don't understand that question. I play the guy who's doing well. It had nothing to do with Mike Bibby or anything else. People make an issue of a guy who isn't in the game, who is in the game, and what happened. If I felt I needed Mike back in the game, I would have brought him back in. I know Mike is going to play well on Saturday, but today Bobby, Jimmy, and Doug, they were playing great. I went with those guys. This is, I think, Mike understands that. Keon didn't play the 2nd half either. That's the way it is. I have no worries about Mike Bibby and how he's going to respond to that or not." Adelman on game 7: "We need to play like we did tonight. We got to really control the tempo. They run so well. We can't let get into a race horse game there. If they are going to do that, we got to be efficient offensively. I think that's such a key for us. If we aren't efficient offensively, they're going to get out and make runs at us. I think that's probably the biggest key of the game." Peja Stojakovic on Divac: "That's the key for this series. It's going to be the key of the 7th game. Everything is about Vlade. Last game we couldn't use him and tonight he was real aggressive. We ran the offense through him. As long as Vlade plays that kind of game, we have a pretty good chance." Vlade Divac: "It was a great game. We really played hard, maybe not smart or pretty like we're used to, but it was game 6 and our backs were to the wall. We came out sluggish but we fought through it and pulled out the win. We had an advantage inside and we tried to exploit it. We'll try the same thing in Dallas. Tonight just showed that free throws win games. We didn't make free throws in game 3 and we lost the game. Tonight we really shot the ball well from the line and the final result shows it." Doug Christie: "I was blessed with some ability and my job is to make this team go, whatever way. I was just very focused and tried to do anything and everything I could." Mike Bibby: "We're going to try to play the same in Dallas as we did tonight. We moved the ball and shot well. We came out with the stuff we needed to win. We need to carry that into Dallas. We won and that's all that matters right now. I think our chances to win in Dallas are good. If we have the same energy there as we did tonight, we'll do fine. The only thing we won't have is our fans. We know they'll be cheering for us here though. I think we'll be all right. If we play like we did tonight we'll definitely be okay." Bobby Jackson on Divac: "He wasn't ready to go home. He played like guys should play. He was playing with that sense of urgency. He has to play like that on Saturday. The whole team has to play like that." Jim Jackson on his play: "That I didn't want to go golfing, like Kenny Smith and all those guys were talking about fishing. I didn't want to go home yet. I think this team is destined to do something special, but we have to go out there and take it. It's not going to come to us. Sometimes it takes 1 or 2 people on the court to show that emotion, to show that aggressiveness to kind of bring other guys back up." JJackson on the pace: I think if you look at the 3 games that we won, it's been at our pace. Dallas is best when they can get up and down the court and shoot quick shots, get transition layups, and get mis-matches. And what we want to try to do, especially if we're ahead, is use the clock as our ally and not our enemy and slow it down a little bit, use Vlade inside, cut, pass the ball, and make Dallas play half court defense." JJackson on winning the rebounding war: "Especially defensively, it was real important because in the games that we lost, we gave up a lot of offensive rebounds. And those offensive rebounds a lot of times correspond into 3-point baskets, which in turn puts us down, you know, 5, 7, 9, 10, 12 points before you know it. So defensive rebounding and trying to contain Nick and Steve's penetration is very important." JJackson on his 7 offensive rebounds: "I just tried to get position. Tried to time the shots. Tried to use my body to get inside of my man. See, I understand the game of basketball and where shots are going to come off of. Fortunately, I played inside and outside my whole career. So what I try to do is just try to figure out where the shot is coming from and try to be in the right place at the right time." JJackson on preparing for game 7: "I think from a mental standpoint, you got to understand that in game 7, now the pressure shifts. I think Dallas was of the mindset that, okay, we can go in here and play hard, but if we lose, we can always go back home. Now it's a different mindset - it's 1 game and you're out. So for us, what we have to understand is that, again, they gonna give everything they got right away and if we can withstand that early push, we'll be okay." JJackson on Christie and BJackson: "Well I think Doug has been big. If you look at the last 3 or 4 games in this series, Doug has been more aggressive. I think after that Utah series, it kind of hurt Doug a little bit and he wanted to prove himself that he could come out and be an intergal part of the offensive - not just playing defense. And he gives us a different kind of look when he can get inside and post up and run the break and making shots. And Bobby, he got 6th man of the year, you know, enough said. A lot of heart, a lot of talent, and a lot of courage. But also, you know, I needed something out of Bobby and Mike tonight, I needed those guys to control the tempo of the game and also control those guards, because if they can do that consistently, we always will have a chance to win the game." JJackson on how bad he wants it: "You really don't know. I've been through so much in my career - the ups and downs, the highs and lows, being traded, the criticism, and all those kind of things. I couldn't even put into words how bad I want this. I think, more than anything else, just watch me play now to show you how bad I want it." JJackson on if he talks to his teammates or leads by example: "Na, I communicate. I'm a natural born leader. I'm not a follower. My whole career, my whole life, I've always wanted something special, to be a part of something special. And here in Sacramento, we have that opportunity. But again, they're not going to give it to us. We have to go out there and accept the challenge and take the challenge and win the basketball games. The only thing I try to impart on my teammates is to - look, together as teams, we can do a lot of good things. I don't care if you're the 14th man or the 1st man on the team, together we can do some special things, but we got to believe in one another when we're out there on the basketball court. And if we do that, we always give ourselves a chances to win - and that's the only thing I ever talk about is us as a team, 'cause we are special here." Don Nelson: "What a great basketball game it was. I was really proud of the way that we battled - I didn't think we played well enough to win, but I thought if we'd of gotten a little luck and made that 3, Walt Williams had a good look at a 3 at the end, that maybe could've stole one. But I think the Kings outplayed us tonight. Made all of their free throws. They were very physical and the offensive rebound really hurt us. I thought Jimmy Jackson was terrific. And Vlade Divac, what are you going to say about that guy. He's just quite a presence at his age and able to do things that you wish your young guys would be able to do. But, you know, I am a big fan of all of your players. I think they are just terrific players and compete. When I watch them play regular season, you know, I enjoy watching them as much as anybody in the league. So doesn't surprise me that you were able to win this tough game tonight. It was a hard game, I am sure, for both teams. But they beat us, and now it's a 1-game series. It's anybody's game. The team that plays the best in this 1 game is going to move on and other one is going to go home. So my team will be ready and I am sure Sacramento will be ready. It should be quite a game. Looking forward to it." Nelson on Nash's turnovers: "It's very unlike him to have 5 turnovers and 4 assists, but that happened. And we'll try to correct that the next time. He normally doesn't do that. He's got a great assist-turnover ratio, but you know, when you are a gutsy little guard like him, you're going to get in spots where you'll have a game occasionally where you turn it over. I thought he was very aggressive. That's the way I wanted to him to play." Nelson on Van Exel: "He's been my best player in the playoffs. I've already talked a lot about him, you know. I love the guy. He's able to raise the level of his play under fierce competition and pressure of the big games, and not many are able to do that. But he is one of those guys and he's proven it in this playoff. He's a tough guard. And I thought Rick did a good job by trying to expose our lack of size and posting him up and getting the ball inside on us some. I was a little disappointed with a couple of players that didn't play well that I thought I needed in those situations. I thought I needed to play Shawn Bradley and have a presence of shot blocking, but I didn't think he was playing well enough to play, at least down the stretch. And then Eddie Najera was just not able to perform at the level that we're used to him performing. So I was kind of stuck at the end. I didn't want to play those guys. I didn't think they were playing well enough to play. So we went with Walt Williams and I thought he did a really good job, a veteran job. He was tough, but he is not the rebounder that those 2 guys are and certainly not the shot blocker, although he played great." Nelson: "But, you know, I am not complaining about the game at all. I thought it was a well-played game by both teams and they beat us. And we had a bit of a chance, not a lot, but we had one look right at the end that I thought maybe would have won the game for us." Nelson on if he could tell them what they might try to do against Divac in Game 7: "No." Nelson on if Nowitzki should have kept the ball with Dallas down 111-109: "No. We are trying to get him to use the pass as a weapon, and I certainly wouldn't argue if he saw somebody open and was worried about a double-team and made a pass at that time, that is up to - you know we're trying to get everybody to trust your teammate, make the correct play, and then it's up to that guy to make the correct play." Nelson on game 7: "Well, we played one already this season and we did all right in that one. I mean, both teams are going to play like they did today. This was a game 7 for both of us - that's the way we approached it, that's the way they approached it. There'll be no difference. It ought to be a great basketball game. And who ever wins that game will deserve to move on, that's the way I look at it. We've been playing 6 times now. These teams are very even, without Webber's it's very even. You can flip a coin most nights. And I hope you enjoy the basketball. It's good basketball. You know, it's over competitive." Nelson: "And to answer the question. I should have answered your questions about what we're going to do with Vlade Divac. I'm thinking very seriously about taking him to some of these male bars with me the night before the game and possibly spending 5 or 6 hours, from say 1 am to 5 am, and you know, have a lot of activities." Dirk Nowitzki: "The Kings played a good game. I don't think we played well enough to win the game. We didn't make enough shots at the end and we didn't make the stops that we needed. The Kings had some big offensive rebounds and Jimmy Jackson had 7 of them. We turned the ball over too many times. Now we have to go into a game 7." Steve Nash: "We turned it over too much and we didn't play well enough to win. We didn't deserve it. You have to come in here and play better than we did. I think we'll be fine. In a short time everyone will put this behind them. A guy can't play any better than Nick played. He's doing an unbelievable job for us, and the rest of us need to pick it up and give him some help sometimes." Nash on winning that last game of a series: "That's the most difficult part. You've done a lot of the work, but that last step is incredibly more difficult that the others. We realize that." Nash on game 7: "We all know what we're playing for. We're playing for a chance to win a championship. By winning one more game, we get to Western Conference final and we get a chance to keep going. That's what we worked hard for all summer, all our careers." Nick Van Exel on what Dallas needs to do to win game 7: "We got to be hungry, man. We just got to be hungry. You know, they were hungrier tonight than we were. Bobby Jackson played great off the bench. Jimmy Jackson, unbelievable with his effort, you know, to keep possession for his team. That's what it's about. We got to get hungry. You know, relying on this home court advantage. You know, we had a great advantage to take care of this thing tonight. We let it slip away. Now, go back to Dallas, but, you know, we got to be hungry, because they are hungry." Van Exel on his game: "Doesn't matter, man, you know, Nick had a good game with an L. That's how we say it. So it really doesn't matter what I do. It's all about the team. Just got to be more aggressive, to get the loose balls, to get the hustle plays - they did it, we didn't." Van Exel: "We're going to be confident going back home, you know, but we had great opportunities. You know, I thought the start of the game was the best opportunity we had. They come out - I don't know how many shots in a row they missed, but, you know, we settled for a jump shot instead of attacking. You know, when they get us down the 1st quarter it's double-digits - 15, 16 points. You know, we get them down 9 points - that's nothing with these 2 teams playing against one another. You know, we had a great opportunity in that 1st quarter, didn't jump on them. Late in the game, had our chances, but, you know, they got the defense stops they needed and we didn't, and hustle plays." Van Exel on Sacramento getting to the rim: "They were attacking. They were just attacking. Attacking off of the pick-and-rolls, attacking in transition, any chance they got. They seen the chance to get to the basket with 1-on-1 defender, they took advantage of it. Pretty good strategy." Van Exel on Jim Jackson: "We just got to be physical with Jimmy. Jimmy's been lifting weights since he was 6 years old. Just got to be physical with him. He's really doing his best to get to that next level. He hasn't been there and he's showing his thirst. And, you know, Doug Christie, he's showing his thirst. Doug Christie was kicking my butt down on the low on the post. Those guys are hungry and you can see it by the way they play. You know, we need to get that." Van Exel on if there is an excuse if they lose: "Na. It should never be any excuses. You know, paper-wise, we probably supposed to be winning this series. I'm sure they would love to have Dirk hurt, you know. I'm sure they probably would've took advantage of it. But, got a good chance on Saturday. We got home court advantage, something we played for all season long. So, just got to take advantage of it." Eduardo Najera: "You don't get too high with the highs or too down with the lows. We lost this one tonight and we really wanted to get it. Now it's our turn to go home. I thought we had a good shot at getting this game down the stretch. We got what we asked for. We just have to close it. We had too many turnovers tonight. We just have to take care of the ball. We just have to keep playing aggressive. Nick has been playing terrific. And we'll be all right." Raef LaFrentz: "We knew it was going to be important to get off to a decent start against this team. We didn't want to fall into a deep hole, especially with them at home. To determine the deciding factor I'm going to have to have a chance to look at the game. We as a team need a chance to look at the game to see just what exactly they did. Give the Kings credit for being in our passing lanes and really mixing it up defensively. Facing game 7, we played all season to get that home court. " LaFrentz: "You have to have effort and execution. We had the effort." LaFrentz on Divac: "He did a good job in the post. When he gets the ball there, he's tough to guard. And he's more of a threat as a passer. He can just find the shooters." Walt Williams on his 3-point attempt: "When I shot it, I couldn't see if it had a chance or not. Steve had fell and when he got the ball to me, I let it go. Somebody flew at me and I lost sight of the ball. But some go in and some don't."
