Game 3: San Antonio at Dallas (May 23) The game started out sluggish as neither team was shooting very well and San Antonio held small leads. San Antonio led 18-13 with 5:20 left and it got really ugly over the rest of the quarter as just 5 Dallas points were scored as San Antonio missed 7 shots and committed 5 turnovers and Dallas shot 2-10 FG and 1-2 FT (their only free throws attempted in the _half_). The game was tied at 18-18 after 1. Raja Bell had 9 points (had the last 5 points of the quarter) and Tim Duncan had 9 points and 8 rebounds. Dallas shot 8-22 FG and San Antonio shot 7-19 FG. San Antonio did out-rebound Dallas 17-8, but gave that advantage back in committing 7 turnovers. Stephen Jackson's 2 3-pointers surrounded a jumper by him to score San Antonio's 1st 8 points of the 2nd quarter and the Spurs led 26-22 with 9:30 remaining. Dallas then went on a 14-2 run to go up 36-28 with 4:45 to go. A 3-pointer by Nick Van Exel gave Dallas their largest lead at 42-32 with 2:25 left. Dallas led 46-38 at the half. Van Exel had 13 points on 5-6 FG in the 2nd quarter and Jackson had 10 points. Dallas shot 12-23 FG including 4-7 3-pointers and San Antonio shot 8-20 FG including 2-4 3-pointers in the 2nd quarter. The refs were calling much in the 1st half and let a lot go as just 14 fouls were called (7 for each team) and San Antonio shot 5-6 FT and Dallas shot 1-2 FT. A 3-pointer by Bell opened the scoring for the 3rd quarter and gave Dallas their largest lead at 11 points. Dallas led 54-44 with 9:25 remaining and fell to pieces as Tony Parker took over and the Spurs became the more aggressive team. San Antonio went on a 15-2 run to go up 59-56 with 4:45 left. Dallas lost Shawn Bradley with a knee injury with 4:15 left and he didn't return (hadn't played much in the game). Neither team led by more than 3 points the rest of the quarter. San Antonio led 69-66 after 3. Parker was hitting everything from the outside and attacking the basket during the quarter as Dallas could do nothing to stop him and he had 19 points including 8-11 FG in the 3rd, including 10 of San Antonio's last 12 points of the quarter. Duncan chipped in 7 points and 8 rebounds in the quarter. It was a very bad quarter for Dallas as they had a very high for them 6 turnovers (the Spurs, who aren't very good turnover-wise had 5 turnovers) and were out-rebounded 6-15. Things got worse for Dallas as San Antonio came out with desire to open the 4th quarter and scored the first 12 points of the quarter to go up 78-66 with 8:35 to go. Then things took a turn for the disaster as Dirk Nowitzki missed a shot and Emanuel Ginobili collided with him and Nowitzki's knee buckled and he went down and stayed down. Either his teammates did not know he was down or they were being stupid as Dallas did not call a timeout on their possession and missed a shot and San Antonio came back 5-on-4 as a still prone Nowitzki pushed himself off the court under the Spurs' basket. And Dallas even screwed up the intentional foul to stop play as Duncan got a short jumper in addition to being foul. After a timeout tending to Nowitzki and him being helped off the court to the locker room (and putting no weight on the left leg), Duncan hit the and-1 free throw to give San Antonio an 81-66 lead with 7:45 to go. The teams traded layups and Dallas then scored the next 6 points, capped by 1-2 FT by Van Exel - Dallas' 1st trip to the line in nearly 33 minutes and only 2nd trip of the game [give me a fricken break], to pull within 74-83 with 5:20 remaining. Duncan got sent to the line and hit 1-2, Michael Finley missed, and Duncan went back to the line and went 1-2. But it was the 2nd attempt that was missed and San Antonio got the rebound and Dallas resorted to hack-a-Bowen [I disagreed with this move at this point]. Bruce Bowen hit 4 free throws to give San Antonio back their 15 point lead. And San Antonio scored the next 5 points, including 1 more hack-a-Bowen where he went 1-2, to take their largest lead at 94-74 with 3:30 to go as Dallas simply could not score. Dallas finally ended their 4:20 shooting drought with 1:40 left and scored the last 7 points of the game to make the final margin a little more reasonable. San Antonio won 96-83. The dominating story after this game, naturally, was injuries. I can't tell you how down after this game I was [I'm sure Kings fans can relate]. But the MRI that came out yesterday showed better news. Dirk Nowitzki's injury wasn't as bad as first feared. He suffered a medial retincular sprain in his left knee (the ligaments that hold the knee cap in place). The usual recovery time for that type of injury is 10 to 14 days, but with an athlete and constant treatment, he will likely be back sooner. He is listed as doubtful to tonight's game 4 and Don Nelson has said that he won't play. It's too early to know if there is a chance he will be available for Tuesday's game 5. But the news for Shawn Bradley was much worse. He suffered a sprained MCL in his right knee and is out indefinitely. With that type of injury, I would be surprised he was available for the rest of the series. Also on the injury front, Don Nelson revealed during his post game comments that Evan Eschmeyer suffered a right knee injury several days ago and has been unavailable to play in the past few games [answering the question some had of why he wasn't inserted at some point during games 2 or 3]. He is listed as doubtful for tonight's game. As for the game, basically it was a tale of 2 halves. Dallas played great in the 2nd quarter and terrible in the 2nd half. And San Antonio stepped up their game in the 2nd half. A pure sign of the hustle that was lacking for Dallas was the rebounds. San Antonio out-rebounded Dallas 59-36 including 19-7 offensive. And that is going to kill you if you shot just 40.2% (35-87) FG. Dallas shot better from behind the arc in shooting 9-19 3-pointers. San Antonio shot 42.9% (36-84) FG including 5-15 3-pointers. The Spurs had a major advantage at the line in shooting 19-26 FG (including 5-6 hack-a-Bowen) while Dallas shot team record setting lows 4-6 FT. The Spurs got their turnover problem under control in committing just 1 turnover in the 4th quarter after committing 17 through 3 quarters. Dallas wasn't too clean with the ball themselves and had 14 turnovers. The aggressiveness and attacking the basket that got Dallas through the first 2 series has been lacking against San Antonio. Granted Tim Duncan has something to do with that, but you can still be aggressive and attack even if there is a big man inside and Dallas needs to get back to doing that. With Nowitzki out, others - especially Michael Finley, Steve Nash, and Nick Van Exel - need to step up. I'm sure that San Antonio is aware that a recently injured team is at it's most dangerous that 1st game after and we'll see how both teams respond tonight. San Antonio regained home court advantage and leads the series 2-1. Game 4 is tonight in Dallas at 7:30 pm. I really, really didn't want to comment about the officiating in this game and I didn't have a problem with the way they called the 1st half - they were letting lots and lots of contact go, but they were fairly consistent about it. But they weren't as consistent in the 2nd half. It's the consecutive inconsistencies that drive me nuts and there were a some of them in this game as Dallas would get hit inside with no call and then a similar thing would happen on the other end and they'd call it. The officiating did not cost Dallas this game and was not that bad, but just 6 free throw attempts is ridiculous [just as 50 and 48 FTA is] and I just can't let it go without pointing it out. It shattered the team record for fewest free throws attempted (old was 12) and was the 5th lowest in NBA playoff history. The good news was that neither team whined too much about the lack of calls and the refs didn't hand out any Ts [though 95% of the players in the league would have gotten one for David Robinson's reaction to a non-call]. As usual, Tim Duncan was awesome and Dallas was unable to slow him down. He had a 20-20 - the 4th time an opponent has had one in Mavs playoff history, and Duncan has 3 of those - with 34 points on 12-19 FG and 10-14 FT, 24 rebounds including 8 offensive (tied a Mavs opponent playoff record), 6 rebounds, and 6 blocks. His only flaw was his 7 turnovers. Also stellar was Tony Parker, who took over the game in the 3rd quarter. 19 points is usually a good performance for a player in a game, but he had that in 1 quarter. Parker finished with 29 points including 13-23 FG, 8 rebounds, and 3 assists. Stephen Jackson was questionable to play due to a throat infection, but he did play and he carried the team early in the 2nd quarter as he scored all 8 of the Spurs' points to open that quarter. He finished with 12 points and 2 rebounds in 24 minutes. Bruce Bowen was the 4th Spur in double-digits with 13 points on 3-9 FG, 2-3 3-pointers [all 3 attempts were in the corner and disgustingly open looks], and 5-6 FT on hack-a-Bowen and had 6 rebounds. David Robinson had just 4 points including 1-6 FG and 6 rebounds in 23 minutes. The Spurs had just 4 points off the bench, but didn't need help with Duncan and Parker carrying the load. Malik Rose had 2 points on a miserable 1-10 FG, but did have 8 rebounds including 4 offensive. Emanuel Ginobili remains MIA and had 2 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists in 26 minutes. Speedy Claxton didn't score on 3 attempts in 11 minutes. No other Spur played more than 2 minutes. No Mav had a stellar game and it killed them. Nick Van Exel was the high man with just 16 points - and 13 of those came in the 2nd quarter. In the 2nd half he shot just 1-8 FG. Dirk Nowitzki had just 15 points on 7-20 FG [come on, no free throws attempted???] and 9 rebounds in 40 minutes before leaving the game with his injury. Michael Finley did not show up with just 11 points including 4-11 FG. He did have 6 assists, though. Steve Nash was also MIA with his offense with just 10 points on 4-9 FG and could not slow down Tony Parker on defense. He did have 9 assists. The 3rd highest scorer for Dallas was Raja Bell, who the Spurs often left open and he hit his shots. Bell had 14 points in 27 minutes. Raef LaFrentz had a nice outing and was contributing when he was on the court but, as usual, was limited by foul trouble - even in a game where the refs weren't whistle happy. He had 10 points, 3 rebounds, 5 blocks, and 5 fouls in 30 minutes. Eduardo Najera could not buy a bucket - and for some strange reason they kept going to him in the 2nd quarter on pick-and-rolls when they should have kept the ball in the hands of the white hot Van Exel. He didn't score on 5 attempts and had 3 rebounds in 16 minutes. Walt Williams had 5 points on 2-2 FG and 4 rebounds in 5 minutes. Shawn Bradley didn't attempt a shot and had 2 rebounds and 2 fouls in 4 minutes before leaving with his injury [and give him credit - when he got up from his injury, he wanted to stay in the game]. Adrian Griffin got a bucket in the final minutes and Tariq Abdul-Wahad didn't score in his 2 minutes. Quotes Gregg Popovich: "I felt in the 1st 2 games that it dissipated to what ever degree in the 2nd half and in this game I thought we got back better in defense and just played a better team game, defensively, more for 48 minutes than we have in the past. That's our character. When we do that, we're a pretty good team. But if we don't do it, you know, we're not the best scoring team in the world. We really have to do with our defense. So that got us through tonight." Popovich on Parker in the 3rd being aggressive: "We've been telling him that all year long, basically. That's what he is. When he's aggressive, we're a better team offensively. And he was aggressive tonight. He made some shots and obviously that helps. But when he's aggressive, we're better." Popovich on the pick-and-roll and Duncan on defense: "Well, you know, Tim's smart enough to try to use his length. He knows that there is going to be a disadvantage there. But he uses his length well and he positions himself well. That's about it." Popovich on Parker and the Kidd rumors: "He doesn't care about that. That doesn't affect him a bit. He's got great confidence in himself and he just comes to play and compete. Some nights might be better than others with his youth. But talk about other players and that sort of thing has never even been something that's been discussed or on his mind or been a problem." Popovich on halftime: "I was concerned. The only thing we were being optimistic about was we thought we played pretty good D. You know, Nick hit some really tough shots that were contested - I think there were 4 3s and 3 of them were contested really well, we thought. So we felt we had played pretty good D, but we were very concerned about the turnovers. I think we had 10 at half, or something like that, and turnovers and free throws are always a problem for us. So we were concerned about the turnovers. And we thought that Dallas did a good job defensively, you know, we didn't score - it was a pretty long period there, I know 5 minutes at least, it might have been longer. So we were concerned about those things very much." Popovich on Nowitzki being out: "I think we'll play the same way. I hope he's not out, you know, just because he's a great player and these games are always best when everybody has their horses. If he's not able to play, they're not going to let up at all and they will come back with fire and we'll have to be ready for that. But nobody wants to lose a player of that caliber. So I honestly hope that he is back. But it wont' change what we do. We can't be a different team, we can't play differently." Popovich on Duncan: "He's our heart and soul out there so we ask him to do everything. He scored, he rebounds, he blocks shots, he plays defense; he is a wonderful basketball player as we all know. He did that tonight as he does every night." Tim Duncan on the 3rd quarter: "Just started to attack a little quicker. They kind of changed up early in the game, started coming with the double-team, and I kind of backed off a little bit, trying to move the ball around and not taking bad shots. But the 2nd half, I was kind of a little more aggressive earlier because the double-team was a little late coming and just kind of push it at them." Duncan on Parker: "He took over for a whole quarter there. [Jackson] took over for about 5 minutes, he took over for about a quarter. Those guys were great tonight, all over the court." Duncan on getting home court back: "Regained home court. You know, we get to come in here on Sunday and try to take that away from them. It sucks that Dirk went down tonight. You hate to see guys get injury. You want to come in here and game all the way through where everybody stays healthy. But that's kind of how the game goes." Duncan on switching on the pick-and-rolls: "It was a halftime switch for us. They kind of got used to our hedges and wanted to give them a different look for a little while and it turned out that we played that way for the whole 2nd half basically. We switched up and got guys in front of them. We took away a lot of their open shots, because they were getting the pick-and-rolls and pick-and-pops, and Dirk and Michael and those guys were getting open jump shots and knocking it out. So started switching, kept guys in front of them, did a great job on the weak side help if they did drive, and it worked for us." Duncan on if Parker's 3rd quarter helped Duncan: "Oh, absolutely. Absolutely. He was great. Hitting his shots, being aggressive in the open court. We talked about it at halftime, those guys were doing a great job of - they defended well in that 2nd quarter and then they pushed it right back at us and then if we did get a stop or if they scored, then we kind of walked it back up the court. We want to be a lot more aggressive coming back at them if we did get a stop, making them pay for trying to get a quick basket and being kind of spread out. And Tony kind of took it upon himself to push it back up the court and make them pay for it." Duncan on the turnover problem and being down 8 at halftime: "Yeah. We actually felt pretty good the whole way through. They hit some shots - they had a bunch of shots in that 2nd quarter. Nick really caught fire. But they were all contested shots. They were all shots with a hand in their face. I thought they just made some shots. So we felt pretty good. We knew there's the whole 2nd half and we seem to play one bad quarter in every game and we got it out in the 2nd quarter." Duncan: "We did exactly what we came here to do. We concentrate one game at a time. Coming in here, trying to regain home court advantage. We did that tonight. Now we want to put the pressure on their shoulders. We want to come in here and take this next one. Really kind of try to put it out of their reach. If we can do that, it's hard to come back from 3-1." Duncan on Nowitzki being out: "I think those guys have done a pretty good job the couple of times he has been out at really taking the offense on themselves. They got so many offensive players, although he is their best. And he will take a lot away from their game 'cause he also is a very good rebounder. Those guys will pick up the slack. Nash will get a lot more shots. Fin and Nick will get a lot more shots. And they'll have to find a big guy to be aggressive inside. They'll fill the spots, but we can't worry about what they have to do - we got to come in here and continue to execute our game, continue to defend, and continue to push it back at them, take advantage of the situation." Duncan on Bowen and hack-a-Bowen: "He understands what he has to do. He's a good shooter and you can tell that by the way he shoots that 3-pointer. It's just about being at that line and being comfortable." Duncan on rebounding: "It's been by design all season long, but it doesn't always work like that. We have an advantage on the glass with our size and we want to attack that and make them pay in that respect so they can't get the ball out and run right back at us. It just worked out tonight that I got a couple of easy ones." Tony Parker: "I just wanted to make sure I was more aggressive in the 2nd half. When you play with a guy like Timmy, it's easy because you get a lot of open shots because he gets a lot of double-teams. He's so dominant that you get a lot of ways to penetrate." Parker: "Pop told me at halftime he wanted be to be more aggressive and help Timmy out." Parker: "I'm young and I try to make everybody happy. Sometimes I feel like I have to pass the ball to Timmy or Manu or Dave. And they're telling me to take over. I have to be careful. I have to balance between pushing the ball and not playing Dallas' game. I have to get the ball to Timmy. Dallas doesn't have anybody to guard Timmy." Stephen Jackson on Parker: "Tony's been doing that for us all year. There's times where Tony just takes over games. He did a great job of that tonight. He knew what was at stake and kept the pressure on them in the 2nd half." Jackson: "They're going to have to stop Tim to beat us. And we're going to keep going to him. He's the MVP. He's our leader. So why stop now?" Malik Rose on Dallas losing Nowitzki: "It obviously hurts them. It's like us losing Timmy." Rose on rebounding: "The ball was bouncing our way offensively and defensively. We really punished them on the offensive boards." Don Nelson: "This was probably the best we've played defensively all year, certainly all playoffs. We were really good in the 1st half. They're really good defensively too and I thought the combination of the way we played was one of the best halves we had in the playoffs. We couldn't substain it and I think they found some holes in what we were doing. But we were really solid in our double-teams and our rotation and our game plan and it was just sensational. I couldn't be prouder of a team at halftime. And then they started to have their way with us a bit in the 2nd half. But we still played a very good game for a long period of time. And it kind of got away from us and that was as much our offense as their defense. They are incredibly strong as a defensive unit. They have 2 shot blockers out there a good deal of the time. And just the greatness of Tim Duncan on both sides of the ball, of the basket. Just amazing how good he is. We all know about his offensive skills and talents, but defensively he was the reason, he was the difference, he was every where with his shot block, his rotations, his strength on the board. He just basically stopped our defense. And then the moves that Pop made, I thought, were really good and solid and really made us pay for the type of team that we have. The news on Dirk Nowitzki is not good. His knee is very sore. He twisted it some how. It's a strain, he'll get an MRI tomorrow. And I wouldn't expect that he would play the next game and wouldn't be sure that he would play in the series. But I'm not a doctor. But I'm just telling you what a coach feels, that we should not take a gamble or chance on Dirk Nowitzki. I told Dirk that he must feel that he's 100%, totally 100%, for me to play him again in this series. And from the looks from him tonight, that's probably not going to happen. So any way, we'll get an MRI tomorrow, but I think the main thing we have to think about now is the health of Dirk Nowitzki and to make sure that we don't do something silly for a game or 2 that we feel is some of the most important games that we've played in our franchise history. Nothing is more important than Dirk Nowitzki's career and I will not jeopardize that career." Nelson on Dallas without Nowitzki: "Well we haven't played very many games without Dirk. And a big part of that is Shawn Bradley - he also twisted his knee and I don't know how strong he's going to be or if he's going to be available for the next game. And then something we didn't even want to talk about was our 3rd center, Evan Eschmeyer, strained his knee a few days ago and was unavailable the last couple of games. So we won't be a very big team for sure, you know, if these injuries are substained. But we will field a team and we will compete the best that we can. We're playing against a very good team, we realize that. When we're at full strength, I don't believe anybody certainly thought we would win the series, but we did. We have to take a step back and look and think the best way we can perform under the circumstances, but we'll compete and we'll do the very best that we can." Nelson on Parker in the 3rd quarter: "Oh my. Certainly Duncan gets the game ball, but for that quarter, we can give half of it to Parker. We could not control him. We were blitzing, double-teaming the screen-and-rolls, trying to get the ball out of his hands. He found ways in which to make us pay with the pass and the shot and the change of timing and speed. He was sensational. He just cut us to pieces." Nelson on San Antonio's pick-and-roll defense: "The greatness of Duncan to be able to challenge the shot, to move his feet and stay in front, to challenge the layup and make that a difficult - or block it. You know, we work on that all of the time with our big guys, and of course we don't have the same skill that he possesses, but that's very difficult. There aren't any trickier guards in the league than I got. Nash is good. Van Exel is outstanding with switch offs. And he gave both of them fits. I don't know. He's a special player, what can I tell you. You voted him MVP twice, I guess you know what you're doing." Dirk Nowitzki: "I don't really know what happened. It happened really quick. Somebody, I think it was Ginobili that fell on my leg. I don't know what I did. Next thing I know, my knee was hurting pretty bad - I've never had a knee injury before so really the pain is new to me. I couldn't move my leg anymore." Nowitzki: "It's a bad break but we'll just have to see how it feels tomorrow. I'm going to get an MRI tomorrow. This series is still a long ways from being over." Nowitzki on playing Sunday: "It doesn't make sense if I'm not 100%. The 1st night it's a little weird after suffering an injury, but like I said, we'll see how it feels tomorrow and see what the MRI says. I can always play through some pain." Michael Finley: "The main thing was they turned it up defensively. Their defense went up to a notch that I haven't seen in the series thus far. They picked their game up and we were unable to match it." Finley on losing Nowitzki: "I think we have enough soldiers in this locker room to put us in position to win, but it'll be tougher." Steve Nash: "Game 4 is a must-win for us. We have to bounce back. We played one of our best halves, then one of our worst halves. We have to put one good game together." Nick Van Exel on his shooting touch: "In the 1st half it was pretty good, but in the 2nd half they came out, turned it up tremendously on the defensive end and then they executed their offense. Tony Parker got going and Tim did his usually thing. It was just a tough night for us in the 2nd half." Van Exel on Parker: "He did a great job of using the pick-and-roll. He waited for our big men to clear out of there and then he used the big men to get into the paint and then when he got into the paint, he has a lot of good up fakes. He was able to get our guards into the air and created space for himself to get his little shot up and it worked tremendously for him in the 2nd half." Van Exel on the team's emotion after losing Nowitzki: "At that time it was already down. We picked it up a little bit, but they had a big enough lead to sustain anything we tried to do. It was terrible that he went down like that, but they had already turned up their defense." Van Exel on the 3rd quarter: "Throughout the playoffs there has been 1 quarter where we hadn't showed up. Tonight we played a pretty good 1st half defensive wise. We got out in transition and pushed the ball, but then in the 2nd half we just didn't get into it. San Antonio did a good job of getting back defensively and also their defense was unbelievable." Van Exel on losing Nowitzki: "My first reaction was, 'Now it's us.' It happened to Portland. It happened to Sac. Now it's happened to us." Raef LaFrentz on rebounding: "That's been our challenge all year long. If we can stay close to people on the backboards, usually our games aren't very close. That's definitely a challenge." Eduardo Najera on if Dallas is missing both Bradley and Nowitzki: "We're taking 2 7-footers out of the game. It will be a big question mark who's going to rebound." Raja Bell on Parker: "He had 19 in the 3rd. Any time you give someone 19 in the 3rd and it's not Tim Duncan, you're in trouble. He hurt us." Bell: "We've been in tough spots this year and it's a series now. We take care of home court on Sunday and it's right back where it started at 0-0 and now they've got the home court. It's not as bad as I guess everybody is feeling right now because we are feeling pretty bad, but I think we'll be fine. We'll come back tomorrow and go back to the drawing board and be ready on Sunday." Bell on rebounding: "We just have to do a better job of boxing out. They have 2 big horses down there with Tim, David, and Malik and those guys. We have to do a better job of boxing out." Bell on losing Nowitzki: "That's tough. I didn't see what happened and I'm hoping it's not something that's going to keep him out the rest of the playoffs. He's our #1 gun so obviously that's going to put us in a bit of a bind, but it's a game of injuries and the Kings played great without Chris Webber so we'll see what we can do."
