Dallas activated Eduardo Najera and placed Tony Delk on IR with a sprained left ankle. Najera is not quite yet ready to play, but should begin practicing with the team. Delk is at least 2 weeks away from being fully healed. Dallas is expected to obtain Scott Williams tonight. Phoenix placed him on waivers 2 days ago and Dallas has made a claim on him. If no team with a worse record than Dallas claims him by 5 pm tonight (the waiver period is 48 hours), then Williams becomes a Mav. The Mavs have an open roster spot from when they let Mamadou N'diaye go. Dallas at Seattle (January 27) Dallas decided to spot another team an early lead as Seattle took a 10-2 lead with 8:20 remaining. The teams traded buckets and Dallas then went on a 10-2 run to tie the game at 14-14 with 6 minutes left. The game was tied 20-20 with 4:15 left and Dallas went on an 11-2 run to go up 31-22 with 1:30 remaining. Dallas led 33-26 after 1. Seattle opened the 2nd quarter with an 8-2 run to pull within 34-35 with 10 minutes to go and the game stayed close the rest of the quarter. Dallas continued to cling to a small lead and the Sonics took the lead back after scoring consecutive baskets gave them a 51-50 lead with 4:20 remaining. The teams traded leads a couple of ties and it was tied 4 ties over the rest of the quarter. Brent Barry suffered a fractured right ring finger near the end of the quarter and did not play the rest of the game. Dirk Nowitzki drove for a power dunk with 4 seconds left, but Dallas was lax and didn't get up on the ball and Antonio Daniels was able to drain a 3-pointer at the buzzer. Seattle led 61-58 in the little defense half. Seattle was shooting 60% FG including 6-14 3-pointers and Dallas was shooting 48% FG including 4-10 3-pointers. Rashard Lewis had 17 points including 5-7 3-pointers and Nowitzki had 17 points including 3-4 3-pointers. The rain was falling early in the 3rd quarter as Seattle connected on 4 3-pointers as part of building up a 78-70 lead with 8:50 to go - Dallas also had 2 3s during that span. Seattle led 82-76 with 6:30 left and Dallas went on a 10-1 run, with 8 of those points coming from Nowitzki (including 2 more 3-pointers), to go up 86-83 with 2:45 to go. Dallas held a small lead for the rest of the quarter and the Mavs led 92-88 after 3. Nowitzki had 18 points including 6-7 FG and 5-5 3-pointers during the quarter. A jumper by Antawn Jamison and 3-pointer by Michael Finley opened the 4th quarter to give Dallas a 97-88 lead with 11 minutes remaining. Dallas led 101-92 with 8:25 left and Seattle scored the next 7 points, capped by a 3-pointer by Daniels, to pull within 99-101 with 6:50 to go and the game stayed close the rest of the way. A layup by Potapenko tied the game at 104-104 with 4:40 left. The teams traded buckets and Ray Allen nailed a jumper to give Seattle a 108-106 lead with 3:30 remaining. Lewis got a layup to give Seattle a 112-108 lead with 2 minutes left. Dallas missed on 2 attempts, but got the rebound both times and then Nash went ping-ponging through the paint, was fouled, and got the wild scoop shot to go. He hit the extra to pull Dallas within 111-112 with 1:30 to go. Lewis was fouled on the other end and hit both free throws with 1:15 left. Nowitzki missed a jumper, but the ball was batted around and Jamison dove to the ground to get the ball and passed it to Nowitzki, who had a wide open lane to the hop and drove strong, but Vitaly Potapenko came from behind and hit Nowitzki hard, sending him to the ground. A flagrant was called and Dallas used a 20 second timeout to allow Nowitzki to make sure he still had all his teeth. Nowitzki hit both free throws with a minute left to pull Dallas within 113-114. Antoine Walker bricked a quick 3-point attempt and then compounded the problem by fouling Lewis on the long rebound (both teams in the penalty). Lewis hit both free throws with 50 seconds left. Potapenko ended up on Nash on the outside on a switch and Nash faked the drive and knocked down the 3-pointer when Potapenko stepped back. The game was tied 116-116 with 36 seconds to go. Lewis drove at Nowitzki and missed the layup and Nowitzki got the rebound and Lewis committed the foul. Both Nowitzki missed both free throws with 21 seconds left. Seattle ran the clock down and Allen drove with Finley riding his hip and when Allen rose for the short baseliner, Finley got his hand on the ball (and Allen's arm - but no foul was called) for the deflection and Walker got the rebound and Dallas called timeout with 1.6 seconds left. After the timeout, Dallas inbounded the ball at halfcourt and used Nowitzki as a decoy. Finley inbounded to Walker in the corner and he nailed the tough turn around fade away long baseliner over Vladimir Radmanovic as time expired. Dallas won 118-116 on a buzzer beater. Well it was an exciting, but not great game. Neither team could get much going defensively, a number of mistakes were made down the stretch, and a questionable non-call occurred near the end. But it had an exciting buzzer beater to win it - which wouldn't have occurred if Ray Allen hadn't made the mistake of starting his drive too early as it was a situation where you don't want to leave any time left when you put the shot up. Both teams were red hot from the outside with Dallas shooting 11-26 3-pointers and Seattle shooting 11-24 3-pointers. Both teams also made 43 field goals (Dallas shooting percentage was slightly lower, but they had more attempts due to 10 more offensive rebounds). The stat difference ended up being free throws made (not attempts as Seattle actually attempted 1 more). Dallas shot 21-27 FT and Seattle shot 19-28 FT. It was a close game throughout as the largest lead by either team was just 9 points. Dirk Nowitzki went nuts in this game. His shooting stroke was really on. He had a regular season career high 43 points on 16-22 FG, 8-11 3-pointers, and 3-5 FT [and was kicking himself for the 2 missed free throws]. It wasn't his best game, though, as he only had 4 rebounds and committed 5 turnovers. After struggling for most of the game, Steve Nash hit 2 clutch baskets late in the game. Prior to those 2 shots Nash shot just 4-14 FG. He finished with 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists. Antoine Walker hit the game winner and broke out the shimmy after hitting the shot. He had a solid game with 17 points, 8 rebounds, and 7 assists. [He was one of the few players cold from the outside, though, as he missed all 5 3-pointers he attempted.] Michael Finley struggled with his shot in shooting 8-22 FG for his 17 points. He also had 6 rebounds including 4 offensive. Josh Howard had his usual non-stat good outing with the hustle, defense, and effort. He was struggling mightily with his shot (and passed up some things that he needs to take). He had 5 points including 1-6 FG, 8 rebounds including 5 offensive, and 3 steals. Antawn Jamison chipped in 15 points including 4-5 FG and 5 rebounds. Travis Best had 2 points on 0-3 FG and 2-2 FT and 6 rebounds (yes, 6) in 14 minutes and Shawn Bradley didn't score and had 2 rebounds in 12 minutes. Rashard Lewis was the high man for Seattle with 30 points including 9-16 FG and 5-9 3-pointers and also had 9 rebounds. Ray Allen had 20 points including 8-20 FG and 3-6 3-pointers. Antonio Daniels got Brent Barry's minutes in the 2nd half and had a season high 21 points including 8-11 FG and 3-4 3-pointers, 6 rebounds, and 6 assists. Barry had 6 points and 5 assists in 19 1st half minutes. He is expected to be out for 5 weeks after undergoing surgery on his fractured right ring finger. Vitaly Potapenko was the 4th Sonic in double-digits with 16 points including 7-8 FG and 5 rebounds. Quotes Don Nelson: "Either team deserved to win. Nobody deserved to lose this game. As it turned out, we had an opportunity at the buzzer." Nelson: "Had we lost, I would have said, 'Congratulations on a great game' to the Sonics. Either team deserved to win." Nelson: "It was really a game that nobody deserved to lose. It's sort of like life. When you get on a roll, things just seem to happen. You keep rolling 7s and you never crap out." Nelson on Walker's game winner: "He delivered a big shot, one of the biggest shots of the year so far." Dirk Nowitzki: "If you look back a month or a month and a half, there is no way we would have won that game. The chemistry is a lot better out there, we have the rhythm out there as a team. I think we are just having a good mix right now." Nowitzki on Walker's game winner: "I thought Radmanovic did a great job defending him. He forced him out and contested his shot. Walk's just got a way of making big shots." Nowitzki on his missed free throws: "I was upset. They had 19 seconds to go. They had Ray Allen with the ball. I was thinking, 'I hope he doesn't make it.' I didn't want to go out and lose after a game like we had." Nowitzki: "My jumper was feeling pretty good and I was able to find my rhythm pretty quick. You've got to give our team credit, they always looked for me and they always found me." Nowitzki: "I was open a lot. I was a little surprised, but that's the luxury of having so many scorers on the floor. They can't focus on just one. I was just able to find my room." Antoine Walker: "Everything happened that we didn't want to happen. We didn't want them to get off at the 3-point line, but they did. It was sort of like playing against ourselves." Walker on the game winner: "That was nice. I was just trying to slash and get a shot in that little corner area. I just got a good pass. You always have a go-to move so you can get a shot off in that situation, so I knew fading away I could get that shot off." Walker: "Go figure that Dirk would have a night like he had and then miss 2 free throws so we would have to win at the buzzer," Nate McMillan: "Our execution for the most part was pretty good. We made some shots. But we lost Nowitzki a few times in transition and he was on fire. Then it came down to loose balls and making shots at the end, and they made the last shot." McMillan on Allen's last shot: "There was a lot of contact. No calls." McMillan on Walker's game winner and shimmy: "He deserves to celebrate. It was a hell of a shot." Ray Allen on the non-call: "I would like to see the videotape to determine what it looked like but the referees, it seemed like they were in a bad position all night. They were seeing things that I didn't see." Allen: "The move I made, he crowded me when I jumped. In any other situation, I would have expected a foul. I didn't convert." Allen: It's weird, I go to the hole and don't get the call because the referees don't want to decide the outcome of the game. But on the other end they call the flagrant foul." Allen: "I think we did a good job of finding the open guy and taking what the defense was giving us. In the 4th quarter, we made some shots and missed some, but sometimes you rely on a call from a referee and tonight, it didn't go our way." Allen on the scramble for the ball prior to the flagrant foul: "That's fundamental basketball right there - the team who gets on the floor is the team who usually wins. We've all been taught our whole lives, when that ball goes down, you get on your knees and you go get it." Allen on Barry's injury: "That's why you can't make plans around here. This team, I thought we were starting to come together and do some good things. And now what it does is shake up our lineup all over again. Everything changes." Rashard Lewis: "I feel like we were getting disrespected and weren't getting no calls, and on the other end they were getting touch fouls. We were getting grabbed and held and not getting any calls and to me that's no respect." Antonio Daniels: "We played well enough to win and the crowd was behind us. That's why it hurts so bad to lose, but we keep showing ourselves. We keep showing what kind of team we can be if we play together and play with heart." Daniels: "These kind of losses hurt. They do. They do hurt because you leave everything on the floor. When you look at your teammates and the score is 106-106 and you look in each other's eyes and you realize we're going to beat this team and, unfortunately, things didn't go our way down the stretch." Daniels: "You can take some losses. Phoenix when they beat us at the buzzer, we deserved to lose that game because we put ourselves in that position. ... But tonight when we played the way we did and executed the way we did in the 4th quarter, for some of those calls to go against us, man it hurts." Vladimir Radmanovic on Walkers' game winner: "I was there. He just made a good shot." Dallas grabbed their first rebound with 3:30 remaining. A 3-pointer by Aleksandar Pavlovic gave Utah a 24-18 lead with 1:25 to go, but Dallas scored the last 6 points of the quarter, capped by a feed from Dirk Nowitzki to Shawn Bradley for a layup at the buzzer. The game was tied 24-24 after 1. The game stayed close in the 2nd quarter with neither team leading by more than 4 points over the first 9 minutes of the quarter. Utah led 42-38 with 2 minutes to go and scored the last 7 points of the quarter to go up 49-38 at the half. Bell had 12 points in the quarter. A layup by Greg Ostertag opened the 3rd quarter and gave the Jazz their largest lead at 13 points. Utah led 56-45 with 8:25 remaining and Dallas scored the next 9 points to pull within 54-56 with 6:45 to go. Utah was able to cling to a small lead the rest of the quarter and led 62-60 after 3. Utah led 66-62 with 10:50 remaining and Dallas went on a 16-4 run that including 4 3-pointers to go up 78-70 with 5:45 left. Utah then went on an 11-2 run, started by a 3-pointer by Andrei Kirilenko, to go up 81-80 with 3:40 remaining. The teams traded jumpers and Michael Finley hit a jumper to give Dallas an 84-83 lead with 3:40 left. The teams traded misses and Kirilenko got a layup with 1:30 to go to give Utah an 85-84 lead. Antoine Walker missed and Carlos Arroyo got the layup on the break with 1:10 remaining. Dirk Nowitzki drove on Bell and both players went down - one ref called a charge, but the senior ref overruled him and called a blocking foul [IMO, the right call]. Nowitzki hit both free throws to pull Dallas within 86-87 with a minute to go. DeShawn Stevenson nailed a jumper with 38 seconds left. As the shot clock was running down, Steve Nash drove and made a pretty behind the back pass to Bradley for the dunk with 16 seconds remaining. Bell was intentionally fouled and he hit both to give the Jazz a 3 point lead with 12 seconds left. After the timeout, Finley's 3-point attempt bounced off the rim and in the scramble for the rebound Nash found the ball and passed out to Walker and he hoisted a 3-point attempt and it bounced on the back of the rim and bounced on the back of the rim as the buzzer sounded and bounced off. Utah won 91-88. The last second shot didn't fall this night, but Dallas didn't really deserve to win anyways. The good news is that it was the last trip to Utah for Dallas this (regular) season - the Mavs played poorly in both visits. Once again, Dallas played at Utah's tempo and that pace does not play to the Mavs' strengths. Add to that Dallas' pathetic rebounding and it's amazing that Dallas stayed in the game. Dallas tied a team record low with just 24 rebounds. The Jazz out-rebounded Dallas 45-24 including 17-4 offensive. Utah did help Dallas some by committing 19 turnovers while Dallas just had 10 turnovers. Utah shot 48.6% (34-70) FG including 5-12 3-pointers and Dallas shot 46.6% (34-73) FG including 8-23 3-pointers. The difference ended up being free throws. Utah shot 18-24 FT and Dallas shot 12-12 FT, but the Jazz were the more aggressive team. The loss snapped Dallas' 9 game winning streak and 5 game road winning streak. Thus ends a stretch of 11 games in 16 nights in which Dallas went 9-2 (started and ended with a loss), and with the crazy schedule Dallas now has a stretch of 1 game in 5 nights. Andrei Kirilenko had a great game with 23 points including 3-4 3-pointers, 10 rebounds, and 5 assists. Raja Bell again enjoyed his outing against his former team with 18 points off the bench. Carlos Arroyo had 12 points and 6 assists and Greg Ostertag had 12 points including 4-11 FG and 11 rebounds. Michael Ruffin had 5 points including 2-7 FG and 11 rebounds. Michael Finley was white hot in the 4th quarter with 13 points on 3-4 3-pointers and 5-7 FG - his only missed 3 in the quarter was the one he wanted the most. He finished with 29 points including 5-8 3-pointers. And it was basically a one-man show as only 2 other Mavs were in double-digits. Dirk Nowitzki did have 17 points, but he only had 2 rebounds in his 40 minutes. Antawn Jamison had 13 points and 3 rebounds off the bench. Steve Nash only attempted 4 shots. He had 7 points, 5 assists, and 4 turnovers - not a good outing. Antoine Walker struggled with 6 points on 3-10 FG and had just 3 rebounds. He did have 8 assists, though. Josh Howard played well early, but was quiet later. Howard had 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 4 assists in 19 minutes. Shawn Bradley had 4 points, 7 rebounds, and 5 blocks in a season high 33 minutes. Travis Best had 4 points and Danny Fortson had 2 points and 1 rebound in 8 minutes each. Quotes Jerry Sloan: "Obviously we had to have a little bit of luck for the ball not to go in the basket until we finished it up, but I thought our guys played really hard. Our guys battled all night long, and it was a great reward for what they were able to do. It was fun to watch our guys play. For the most part, we did a good job. For a young team, we made some good plays." Sloan: "Our whole team, I thought, played well. It was fun. Our players should be happy for themselves - because I think they worked real hard to win the ballgame. That's better than just trying to play it out." Sloan on Bell: "If you see a guy playing as hard as he was, it's got to rub off on the other guys out there. He's got some toughness. He's not afraid. He will stand up and fight. That's been lacking in our team." Andrei Kirilenko: "The best thing was the concentration at the end. Everybody was like fighting dogs in the end. I like that." Kirilenko on Walker's 3 attempt: "Yeah, I was scared. My heart went thump-thump-thump-thump." Kirilenko on his 3-pointer with 5:30 left: "I just took the responsibility and shot it. ... It was a little bit lucky. It was hard shot. I know if I'm going to miss, Jerry will be real mad at me. First pass, on the side, almost with a defender there. I'm taking responsibility. ... Yes, it was that [important]. I saw guys a little frustrated, a little frozen, so I took it. That's the game of basketball. Lucky sometimes, unlucky sometimes. But the 3rd quarter was unlucky, so I feel like the 4th quarter would be lucky." Raja Bell on Walker's 3 attempt: "I had seen the end of the Seattle game last night, so when it started bouncing I thought it was going in. They missed it and now I am going to talk a little trash - all friendly - to anyone who will listen." Bell on Walker's 3 attempt: "It is really like double slow motion. The ball's up, it bounces once, it bounces twice, gets kicked out and you're kind of holding your breath." Bell on Finley getting hot: "You've got to chalk it up to him being a great player. A couple of those, I don't think he even saw the basket. You can't hang your head. Next time he gets the ball, don't let him do it again." Bell on Dallas going up by 8 in the 4th: "We knew we weren't out of the game. I mean, you're never out of the game. There was still enough time on the clock. But I think we felt like everybody in the building felt it was getting late, and if it didn't happen now then we were going to soon be out of it. So, [Kirilenko's] shots were critical." Don Nelson: "As you know, the hardest game to win is a game after a big emotional win. You come back the next day, you don't have any time to rest. That was hard for us, I thought, it hurt us in the 1st half, but we found some energy, got back into the game. But basically when you get out-rebounded as bad as we did tonight it's awful hard to win. But 9 in in a row is not bad." Nelson: "Well, we're awful tired. We've played 11 games in 16 days, I mean some incredible number like that - I don't even know what it is. Coast to coast, we've been all over the joint. So it's been really hard on the team, coming back to back after an emotional win. ... They gave me what they had. It wasn't enough, but at least it was enough to compete." Nelson: "It was a very physical game, not many fouls called. That's just the way it is. The referees always set the tone of the game. I'm not complaining, they did it on both sides. They just let guys play and there wasn't a lot of fouls. That's the way it is and you've got to step up. ... That's the way the game went, so the better team won tonight." Michael Finley: "I got a really good look and I thought it was in." Steve Nash: "They play well here. They did a good job. They're a good team. They have one of the best coaches in the league, for sure. They move the ball well, they play as hard as anyone in the league, and they really compete and they deserve everything they get." Nash: "We're a lot better team now. We've won a lot of games that we wouldn't have before, but hopefully we're improving." Nash: "We had a really tough game last night - an up-and-down game, a lot of possessions - and to come in to tonight, you know, it took us a half before we woke up. We got ourselves a nice lead in the 4th quarter, but they made some big shots and you've got to give them credit they really wanted it and made some big plays." Antoine Walker on his last attempt: "It felt good leaving my hands ... we ran a good play; Mike's shot went in and out and then my shot went in and out. Couldn't ask for anything more than that." Walker: "It felt good leaving my hands. We just came up short tonight. That's the nature of the game." Walker: "We had control of the game, but Kirilenko hit a couple of big 3s to get them back in the game and they held on. It's a tough game to lose tonight." Walker on the winning streak ending: "We had a good run. We needed that to get back into the thick of things in the Western Conference." Antawn Jamison: "That was one of our main goals, to come in here and try to out-rebound this team. They just out-worked us and out-hustled us and it really showed." Shawn Bradley: "Utah takes care of their homecourt as good as most, and they have through the years. For some reason, they seem to play better than us this year." Bradley: "Rebounding was a big disparity. They crashed the glass really aggressively. They did what they needed to do. We saw opportunities to win, but you've got to give them credit because they did what they had to. They played physical and they need to do that in order to win. They're going to get calls on their own floor, and this has always been a tough place to play. Coach Sloan has a disciplined team." Bradley: "It was a little uncharacteristic of them to shoot early 3s, especially in the 4th quarter, but they came off the deck and hit them and got back into the game." Bradley: "It was a hard month, though. I don't care how you look at it, it was a hard month. We were able to step up to the challenge. Yeah we've beaten very good teams, but we've also lost to teams we've beaten in the past, so we've still got a lot of growing to do."
