Note that Thursday's gave vs San Antonio has an early start time of 6:30 pm - it's on TNT. Dirk Nowitzki tweaked his ankle during practice today (Wednesday) and is listed as questionable for Thursday's game vs San Antonio. Dallas at Memphis (November 15) Memphis had an early 8-4 lead 3 minutes in and continued to lead the rest of the quarter. Memphis led 23-18 with 2 minutes left and scored the next 7 points to go up 30-18 with 34 seconds remaining. Memphis led 31-21 after 1. Memphis shot 52% FG and Dallas shot 42% FG and missed 5 free throws. Memphis led 37-26 with 8 minutes to go and Dallas went on a 13-2 run to tie the game at 39-39 with 4:10 left. The teams traded leads over the end of the quarter and a 3-pointer by Jason Williams gave Memphis a 48-46 lead at the half. Neither team shot well (both were well under 40% FG), but Dallas got back into the game at the line as the Mavs shot 9-12 FT (Memphis was in the penalty midway through the quarter) and Memphis shot 4-4 FT. But the 8 missed free throws by Dallas was a problem. Dirk Nowitzki had 17 points, the only player for either team in double-digits. The game remained close in the 3rd quarter with 5 ties and 5 lead changes. Nowitzki and James Posey bumped heads with midway through the quarter and Nowitzki had to leave the game to get 8 stitches for a gash over his left eye - returned to the game with 8 minutes left in the 4th quarter. 3-pointers by Steve Nash and Michael Finley gave Dallas a 68-63 lead with 5:15 to go. Dallas held a small lead the rest of the quarter and led 78-72 after 3. Dallas shot 4-5 3-pointers in the quarter and Finley scored 11 points. Memphis had the advantage from the line in the 3rd as they shot 8-10 FT while Dallas shot 4-4 FT. Dallas led 84-76 with 9:30 remaining and Mike Miller nailed a 3-pointer and Posey hit 2 free throws to pull Memphis within 83-84 with 6:25 left. During the run, Lorenzen Wright was ejected after picking up his 2nd technical. He received one early in the game for complaining to the ref and got his 2nd 1 when he swung his elbow at Shawn Bradley (hit him in the side), knocking him to the ground, and Bradley retaliated by using his feet to trip Wright - both were given Ts [and this was one of Mark Cuban's complaints about the refs as they weren't going to call the thrown elbow and only did so after the Bradley trip]. Dallas led 90-86 with 3:50 left and consecutive layups by Memphis tied the game at 90-90 with 2:55 to go. A layup by Eduardo Najera gave Dallas back the lead with 2:30 to go, the teams traded misses, and a 3-pointer by Williams gave Memphis the lead at 93-92 with 1:30 to go. Dallas missed and Memphis missed on 2 attempts, but Dallas turned the ball over with 32 seconds remaining. Miller hit a short jumper with 17 seconds left and Dallas called timeout. Finley missed a 3-pointer attempt with 11 seconds to go and the Mavs sent Posey to the line on an intentional foul. But Posey missed both free throws to leave the door open. After another Mavs timeout, the ball was inbounded to Nash and, with 2 defenders all over him, Nash made a behind the back pass to Antoine Walker, Walker fumbled the ball and then flung it up towards the rim, the ball hit the backboard above the square, bounced of the front of the rim and went up high, and and came back down through the rim with the buzzer sounding. Overtime at 95-95. Easily the shot of the night from any game. Memphis shot 53% FG and Dallas shot just 33% FG in the 4th quarter, but both were pathetic from the line as Memphis shot 1-6 FT and Dallas missed their 2 attempts. Any momentum Dallas had from their miracle game tying shot was lost in overtime as the Mavs missed their first 3 shots and Memphis connected on their 2 shots (one of which was a 3-pointer) and 2 free throws to go up 102-95 with 3:25 left. Memphis then missed their next 3 shots and Antawn Jamison got a putback and layup to pull Dallas within 99-102 with 2 minutes to go. Memphis again missed a shot, but got the rebound, but Nash stole the ball, but Walker missed a 3-point attempt with 56 seconds remaining. Williams hit 2 free throws, Dallas again turned the ball over, and Miller got the quick layup to seal the win. Memphis won 108-101 in overtime. The Mavs road struggles continue as they are now just 2-4 on the road. And despite the fact that Dallas managed to send the game into overtime, the team did not deserve to win this one as Memphis was showing the hustle and energy while Dallas was making stupid mistakes and letting the poor officiating get to them. The reason for this loss is shown by 2 stats: Dallas shot a mere 17-27 FT and committed 17 turnovers. A sloppy game like this one was won't get it done on most nights. And all the missed free throws came in regulation. Josh Howard missed 3 free throws (2-5 FT), Dirk Nowitzki missed 3 free throws (5-8 FT), and Antoine Walker missed 4 free throws (1-5 FT). In the 4th quarter and overtime, Dallas shot 33.3% (11-33) FG while Memphis shot 53.8% (14-26) FG as Memphis out-scored Dallas 36-23. For the game, Memphis shot 44.9% (40-89) FG including 6-18 3-pointers and 22-32 FT. Dallas shot 40.2% (39-97) FG including 6-19 3-pointers. The Mavs did out-rebounded Memphis 58-51 including 20-12 offensive, but the free throws and turnovers killed them. Mike Miller was the high man with 22 points and an in control Jason Williams had 20 points, 9 assists, 3 steals, and just 1 turnover. Pau Gasol was solid with 17 points and 16 rebounds. James Posey chipped in 12 points and 5 rebounds and Shane Battier was the 5th Grizzly in double-digits with 11 points. Bo Outlaw was his usual hustle self and had 6 points and 13 rebounds - and hit both of his free throws! For Dallas, Dirk Nowitzki had 19 points on 7-10 FG and 5-8 FT and 9 rebounds before his injury and probably shouldn't have returned. In the 4th and overtime, Nowitzki missed all 4 of his shots and had 2 rebounds. Michael Finley also had 19 points and had 7 rebounds. Antoine Walker's shooting touch was absent as he shot 6-18 FG including 2-8 3-pointers and 1-5 FT for his 15 points. He did grab 10 rebounds and dish out 6 assists, though. Steve Nash had 16 points, 5 rebounds, and 8 assists but had a ridiculously high 8 turnovers - it was the 2nd most turnovers in his Mavs career (had 9 on 5/11/02). Josh Howard started and did a nice job in the 1st half - he didn't play in the 2nd half. Eduardo Najera and Shawn Bradley both played well and disrupted Memphis' game. Bradley did not play in the 1st half and had 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 5 blocks in the 3rd quarter. Najera had 10 points on 5-6 FG, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals in 14 minutes. Antawn Jamison had a poor outing with 8 points on 4-15 FG, but did have 9 rebounds including 4 offensive. Travis Best continues to be MIA in missing all 4 shots and having no assists in 14 minutes. The officiating was terrible both ways throughout the game. Ref Ted Bernhardt did a particularly poor job. They were not consistent with their calls and let somethings go that should have been called, such as a shove in the back that resulted in a player not being able to catch a pass. Though they finally got it right (although their reasons for getting it right might have been wrong), I was watching with disbelief as the refs were going to have Memphis inbound the ball instead of Jason Williams shooting free throws when Dirk Nowitzki picked up his 6th foul. The foul call might have been questionable, but there was no question that Williams was going for the layup - if you make that call, it had to be free throws (the foul also put Dallas in the penalty, so that might be why they decided to send Williams to the line). I'm not blaming the loss on the refs - Dallas' poor free throw shooting gets full credit for that - just pointing out that the crew did a very poor job. Quotes Hubie Brown: "The defense was just outstanding down the stretch. It gave us a chance to win the game. We held them. Even with their high-power offense, we held them to 17 points in the 4th quarter." Brown on Walker's game-tying 3-pointer: "That's basketball. He shot it from Chicago. He was so far behind the 3-point line and, as you know, he is such a great shooter. He wasn't trying to bank the shot. It was a miraculous shot." Pau Gasol: "We're beating teams now that we hadn't beaten, so it feels very good. We've got to feel proud, realize how good we are and go after every team, no matter who they are." Gasol on the team's 5-4 record: "Not bad. It means we are headed in the right way. We're working hard, and it means the team has changed, mentally especially." Mike Miller on overtime: "The momentum was definitely back on their side, so it was tough. We were aggressive early, got some buckets and made it to the free throw line." Miller: "We played well down the stretch and that's a good sign for a young team. Hubie kept stressing 'Let's see it in your eyes.'" James Posey on overtime: "We just had to work a couple of extra minutes. We still played with the energy and that sense of urgency." Lorenzen Wright: "We feel like we can play with anybody. We're starting to click right now and it feels good." Don Nelson: "We didn't think it was going to be an easy game coming in here and it wasn't. We knew it was going to be very physical. It was a very emotional game. We battled our best, but we just didn't seem to have enough in overtime." Nelson: "They made shots in overtime and we didn't. We struggled. We turned the ball over too much. We thought there should have been fouls called, but they ended up being turnovers." Nelson, after declining to comment on the refs, on the turnovers in the 4th quarter: "We thought there should have been fouls on those turnovers. But nonetheless there wasn't and the result was a turnover." Nelson on Nowitzki after getting stitches: "He wasn't the same when he came back into the game. He was dizzy. We have to be careful and watch him." Steve Nash: "We lost the game in the last few minutes of regulation. We certainly didn't get any help along the way, but we had our chances." Antoine Walker on his game tying 3-pointer: "We ran a designed play where I got the pass. I couldn't get one to go all night, but I got the important one to go. Unfortunately, we came up short, so it was all for naught." And the refs decided to let them play [not complaining - they were consistent about it]. Dallas opened the game holding small leads and a jumper by Antoine Walker gave Dallas a 15-9 lead with 6:55 left. Portland went on an 11-2 run to go up 22-19 with 1:20 remaining. Portland led 24-23 after 1. Portland out-rebounded Dallas 18-9 including 9-3 offensive. Zach Randolph had 9 points and 7 rebounds. Portland scored the first 6 points of the 2nd quarter to go up 30-23 with 10:30 to go. Portland took their largest lead at 34-25 with 8:20 left and Antawn Jamison took over in scoring Dallas' next 8 points to pull Dallas within 33-36 with 6 minutes left. Dallas managed to tie the game once over the rest of the half, but Portland hung on to the lead. Portland led 50-46 at the half. Jamison had 16 points including 7-10 FG in the 2nd quarter - all but 7 of Dallas' points in the quarter. For the half, Portland shot 47% FG and 5-6 FT and Dallas shot 45% FG and 3-5 FT, but Portland out-rebounded Dallas 29-17 including 13-8 offensive. Portland scored 6 consecutive points to go up 63-50 with 7:30 left. Portland led 67-53 with 6:20 to go and Dallas went on a 16-4 run that including 3 Dallas 3-pointers to tie the game at 71-71 with 2:35 remaining. After throwing the ball away (no Blazer near where the ball went) and missing a shot, Bonzi Wells got pulled with 4:15 left and never returned [I was wondering why he wasn't playing during the 4th; Portland was up by 7 points at the time of his departure]. Dallas scored the last 4 points of the quarter to take a 77-74 lead after 3. Rookie Matt Carroll nailed a 3-pointer and Rasheed Wallace converted the 3-point play to give Portland an 80-77 lead with 10:20 remaining. Dallas then scored the next 8 points to go up 85-80 with 7:50 to go. The game stayed close the rest of the way with Dallas holding on to a single-digit lead. A jumper by Wallace pulled Portland within 88-91 with 4 minutes left, but Walker answered with a 3-pointer. Randolph hit 1 of 2 free throws and Steve Nash got one of his circus shots to go as his 10-footer bounced in as he was falling down and a foul was called. He hit the extra to give Dallas a 97-89 lead with 2:50 remaining. Jeff McInnis answered with a 3-pointer as the shot clock was running down. Walker missed a 3-pointer, but Nash snagged his 9th rebound and shovel-passed back to Dirk Nowitzki, who swished the 3-pointer and gave Dallas a 100-92 lead with 2 minutes left. Portland was unable to get closer than 5 points (and that was with 18 seconds left) the rest of the way. Dallas won 105-98. The big news of the game didn't come out until much later. The reason Bonzi Wells wasn't playing in the 4th quarter was that he had cussed out coach Maurice Cheeks after being subbed out midway through the 3rd quarter and Cheeks sat him for the rest of the game. The next day, Portland suspended Wells for 2 games and removed his title as co-captain. Portland playing down the stretch minus one of their best players did put a little damper on the comeback win, but it was a very hard fought win. After getting killed on the boards 29-17 in the 1st half, Dallas won that war in the 2nd half by out-rebounding Portland 28-24 and both teams had 11 offensive rebounds in the 2nd half - significant in that Portland shot just 41.5% FG in the 2nd half. For the game, Dallas shot 47.1% (41-87) FG including 9-20 3-pointers and 14-20 FT and Portland shot 44.3% (39-88) FG including 5-15 3-pointers and 15-21 FT. Despite Portland putting out a larger lineup, Dallas was only out-scored 40-44 in the paint. And the game was played at Portland's pace as there were only 16 total fast break points. The Mavs also got the turnover problem that plagued them in the Memphis game under control and committed 11 turnovers (Portland had 13). All were happy that Steve Nash got his first career triple-double. Nash had 14 points, 10 rebounds, and 12 assists. 10 rebounds is career high (was 9). And he was running around like crazy after collecting his 9th with 2 minutes left to try to get the 10th. He grabbed a rebound after a foul was called and looked at the bench and grinned, 'I got one.' He should have had it when Zach Randolph missed a free throw, but Antoine Walker stole it from him (and Nash again had a big grin on his face). And he finally got it in the last seconds of the game and a big cheer went up. Nash was the talk of the game after the game, but the Mavs did have 3 players score 20+ points each. Michael Finley scored 12 of his 25 points in the 3rd quarter and also had 7 rebounds. Dirk Nowitzki had 20 points, 8 rebounds, 5 assists, and 3 blocks. Antawn Jamison had his best game of his Mavs career with 20 points including 8-11 FG and 4 rebounds. Antoine Walker had 14 points including 5-14 FG and 6 rebounds before fouling out in the waning seconds of the game. Danny Fortson got the start and had 4 points and 7 rebounds in 18 minutes. Eduardo Najera was quiet with 6 points and 1 rebound in 14 minutes. Travis Best had 2 points on 1-2 FG and 1 assist in 9 minutes and Josh Howard had no points and 2 rebounds in 4 minutes. Tony Delk continues to miss games due to his strained left hamstring and Shawn Bradley sat out this game with a sore left knee. For Portland, Zach Randolph had a monster game with 25 points on 9-12 FG and 7-11 FT, 19 rebounds, and 6 assists, but did have 5 turnovers. Rasheed Wallace had a game high 31 points and 8 rebounds. Before getting chained to the bench, Bonzi Wells had 14 points. No other Blazer was in double-digits. Dale Davis had 5 points including 2-7 FG and 9 rebounds including 6 offensive. Damon Stoudamire had a horrible shooting night with 5 points including 1-11 FG, but did have 7 rebounds and 7 assists. [Sheesh, Nash gets 10 rebounds and Stoudamire gets 7 rebounds???] Quotes Don Nelson: "I was worried about that game for quite a while. They've had our number for a long period of time. They were pounding us on the boards and it didn't look like we were going to get it going. Finally in the 3rd period, we started to pull down the boards and do the things that we do best - make shots. It was Jamison's best game of the year so far and everyone else just found a way. What can you say about Nash, he gets 10 rebounds and gets a triple-double. I was very happy for him." Nelson on Nash's triple: "What can you say about Nash. When we needed rebounds, he goes out and gets 10. I'm real happy for him. But I'm happier for me. I was worried about that game for quite a while. They tried to beat us up." Nelson on Portland: "I think they are a good team. They still have a couple players out and they will be a team to be reckoned with this year. They are real physical and [we] deserve the day off tomorrow." Nelson on what he said at halftime: "I just told them that if they want to win the game they have to hold their own on the court, it's really that simple. Without Shawn Bradley in the middle we are a very small team. They did what they were supposed to do - try to beat us up inside, rebound, and throw the ball to the side." Michael Finley: "We have the type of team that we have enough guys who can carry the load. That was true today." Steve Nash on his triple: "I've always wanted to get one. I didn't want to make too big a deal about it so I wouldn't be disappointed in case I didn't get it. But after I got it, it was a good feeling." Nash on his triple: "Everyone kept telling me [he needed one more rebound]. I was trying not to make a big deal of it and then it got into a situation where they were starting to put a little pressure on me. If I didn't do it, I would never live it down. The last board of the game came right to me." Nash on his triple: "There's no way I couldn't have known about it. They kept telling me to go for another rebound because they know I might not ever have a chance to get it again. I was trying not to make a big deal of it but they kept telling me about it. I have to admit it's a big thrill for me. To get it in a big win at home was very special. I was excited to do it. It's something I'll always remember. Nash on the triple: "Stats become such a huge part of our game that sometimes it's irritating, but I will say that I've always wanted a triple-double. I've always admired those players who get triple-doubles and I can't deny the fact that I've always wanted one and it feels great to get one." Nash on his triple: "I have to admit, it's a big thrill. I've always admired guys who can get triple-doubles, and I always wanted to get one. And to do it in a game when we really needed it makes it all the more special. I was excited to do it." Antoine Walker: "Everyone chipped in in that 4th quarter and that's a sign of a great team. They are a team that really focuses on getting the ball inside, and they do a great job at it. We had to gang-rebound and everyone had to chip in. Then we were able to get out on the break and capitalize on our opportunities." Walker on the rebound he took from Nash late in the game: "I didn't know what he was doing. I had to get a couple [rebounds] myself. I didn't want to get cussed out in practice." Antawn Jamison on the comeback run: "We did a tremendous job and we did it quickly. We don't like to put ourselves in those situations but we know sometimes we can come back from them. Steve Nash took over the game during that stretch. He and Mike hit some shots and that got everyone going." Jamison on the comeback: "This is just one of these teams where it just doesn't matter how many points we're down we always feel like we can come back and win. Jamison on his 2nd quarter: "I was due for one. In the last couple of games I really haven't got into a rhythm and I was really frustrated in the way I played offensively against Memphis. I was focused and wanted to come in and really contribute to the team instead of holding them back. Once I start hitting 1 or 2 in row, the rest of them starts to feel comfortable and I really started to get it going in the 2nd quarter." Jamison if it was his best game of the year: "Offensively, yes. As far as a total game, I still have a long ways to go, but it was a stepping stone especially for me to get acquainted with coming off the bench. I'm starting to realize what I need to do to get going and what I need to do to help the team out. I'm starting to get a lot more comfortable." Maurice Cheeks: "Jamison kept them in the game in the 1st half. Nowitzki made some shots later, but Nash is the head of that team. He controls that team. When we were up by 13, he stepped up and made some big plays." Cheeks on Nash: "I wouldn't have known he had a triple-double until I looked at the stat sheet. I thought he made shots when he had to. He'd make a driving layup and then he'd make a 3. I think he took over the game at a certain point, then the other guys got involved." Cheeks on Dallas: "I think they have great offensive players. I think Shawn Bradley makes them a very good defensive team. He obviously was out tonight. The players that replaced Adrian Griffin and Raja Bell are all-star players. So they lose Nick Van Exel, but they plug in some very good players. I wouldn't say they are better or worse [than last year], but they are a very good basketball team." Cheeks on the punishment for Wells: "I haven't decided what is going to happen, but something will happen. It's ridiculous. Just ridiculous." Cheeks on Wells' outburst: "For the rest of the players on the team ... I mean, we had a nice flow going, a nice basketball game going ... and that's what is disappointing." Cheeks on Wells: "He's supposed to be one of the captains. I don't get it. I just don't get it." Cheeks on him and Wells: "There is friction. You can write it. That incident happened and we have to deal with it. I don't have a concern with it. I'm going to deal with it and then I'm going to put it aside." Cheeks on Wells' on-court errors that proceeded the outburst: "I live with mistakes all the time. I don't have a problem with that. But we had a nice flow going. The game was going our way, and then one things leads to another. Dallas got on a roll and it just steamrolled." Zach Randolph on the 3rd quarter: "They just made a run. When they made their run, they were hitting shots and we fell into their game. We played the whole game. I think our intensity dropped a little bit, but now we have to get ready for Miami. It's a hard loss, but I think we played hard. There are a couple things that we need to work on - we have to get better. We want to get to where we know where we are as a team instead of being up and down." Jeff McInnis: "We played hard. I think it was a better effort than the New Orleans game. We played hard, but we just didn't get shots to go. We had a 13 point lead and we started making mistakes. We have to learn to build on leads like teams do to us. Build on leads and play through it." McInnis: "We pounded on them. We took it inside to Zach and Rasheed and they were getting it done, then they went back to their zone. We made mistakes to let them make runs. When Dallas can get on the break and make runs, they are one of the best teams in the league at their gym because they can shoot 3s with anybody on the court. We let them play their game after we had the 13 point lead." McInnis on Wells: "It hurt us. I was on the bench when it happened, and I just tried to tell Bonzi that he has to keep his head up. We needed him to finish that game. We played hard building that lead, but it's hard when someone makes that kind of mistake." Dale Davis on Wells: "Sometimes Bonzi lets his frustration get the best of him. But we can't afford not to have him in there. He's a good part of our team." Qyntel Woods: "Whatever Bonzi said made Cheeks mad. I don't know what it was or how it happened. I didn't see it. I don't know. It meant more playing time for me, but it also hurt the team. We need Bonzi on the floor to win. If winning keeps me on the bench, I can deal with that, but ..."
