Utah at Dallas (November 1) The game stayed close in the 1st quarter with neither team holding more than a 5 point lead. Michael Finley hit 2 free throws as the quarter ended to give Dallas a 29-26 lead. Finley had 11 points and DeShawn Stevenson had 13 points. Utah continued to keep up with Dallas as the Mavs held just a 37-31 lead with 6:15 remaining. A 7-1 run gave Dallas a 49-38 lead with 2 minutes left. Utah cut Dallas' lead down to 7 points, but Raja Bell was called for a questionable flagrant foul and Steve Nash hit both free throws and then Antawn Jamison hit a bucket and was fouled to make it a 5 point possession to end the quarter. Dallas led 56-44 at the half. Dallas only had 4 turnovers in the half while Utah had 9 turnovers. Dallas opened the 3rd quarter with a flurry of 3-pointers. Utah tried to keep up, but Dallas' offense was just too potent as the Mavs went up 72-52 with 8:20 left and the Mavs had hit on 4 3-pointers in the quarter already. A 3-pointer by Bell did pull Utah within 13 points at 65-78 with 6 minutes to go, but Dirk Nowitzki answered with a 3 and Utah would not get that close again. 8 straight points by Dallas gave the Mavs a 95-71 lead with 1:10 left. Dallas led 97-75 after 3. Dallas out-scored Utah 41-31 in the quarter while shooting 6-12 3-pointers and committing no turnovers. Tony Delk was a monster in the quarter with 14 points and Antoine Walker had 10 points. Andrei Kirilenko had 13 points for Utah. The 4th quarter was pure garbage time as Dallas led in the 20s the entire quarter. Dallas won 127-102. Though the team continued to look sluggish at points, this was by far the best Dallas has looked in this young season. The 3rd quarter was just an offensive explosion that I don't think any team could have survived as the team was just hot (though the team did fall in love with the long shot for a few minutes where they should have worked the ball more). Dallas finished the game shooting 51.7% (46-89) FG including 9-23 3-pointers and Utah shot 44% (37-84) FG including 4-16 3-pointers. Both teams played a clean game as Dallas had just 7 turnovers and Utah had 13 turnovers - impressive in that their starting point guard did not play - but Dallas converted those into 23 points. Dallas held a 49-38 rebounding edge. On a night where a number of Mavs played well, Tony Delk was the star of the game. On the defensive end, he did a good job and had a very impressive from behind block and a couple of steals. On the offensive end, he had a team high 22 points including 4-7 3-pointers. He also grabbed 7 rebounds including 3 offensive in 26 minutes. Antoine Walker had 16 points including 2-3 3-pointers and 6 assists in 32 minutes. Michael Finley broke out of his shooting slump and hit the first 2 shots of the game and finished with 16 points and 5 rebounds in 36 minutes. Dirk Nowitzki was only the 4th highest scorer in the game for Dallas. He had 15 points including 6-8 FG and 2-3 3-pointers in 25 minutes. Steve Nash chipped in 12 points and 7 assists in 23 minutes as all starters were in double-digits. 11 of Antawn Jamison's 18 points came in the 4th quarter. All his work wasn't in garbage time though as 6 of his 10 rebounds came in the first 3 quarters. Marquis Daniels had 10 points in 8 minutes of the 4th quarter. Shawn Bradley had 6 points and 6 rebounds in 10 minutes and Travis Best had 6 points, 3 rebounds, and 3 assists in 25 minutes. Danny Fortson had 4 points and 5 rebounds in the 4th and Eduardo Najera had 2 points and 1 rebound in 12 minutes. Josh Howard did not play due to a sprained right ankle. Utah was without Carlos Arroyo and Keon Clark. 13 of DeShawn Stevenson's career high 24 points came in the 1st quarter. He also had 6 rebounds, but turned the ball over 5 times. Andrei Kirilenko had 21 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Matt Harpring only had 10 points, but did have 7 rebounds. Former Mav Raja Bell had a nice return to Dallas with 16 points in 23 minutes. Rookie Ben Handlogten was the only other Jazz player in double-digits with 10 points on a perfect 3-3 FG and 4-4 FT and had 6 rebounds including 4 offensive. Best play of the game: A long miss by Dallas went into the corner and Antawn Jamison ran it down and flung the ball back towards midcourt. Antoine Walker jumped up, with a defender also jumping, and tapped the ball towards Dirk Nowitzki. Nowitzki passed the ball to Travis Best, who drove, was bumped and the whistle blew and, with his back to the basket, he flung the ball up over his head and it went in. Quotes Don Nelson: "That was exactly the kind of game we needed. We had the chance to play everybody and they all got a good run and things went the right way. Utah reported before the game that their starting point guard wasn't going to play - I'm sure that didn't help their team out, so we aren't going to get too full of ourselves on this win knowing that they were undermanned. We had a lot of good things happen and we had a lot of energy. We got into the open court for a change and played Maverick basketball. I felt really good about the game." Nelson on hitting jumpers: "We have to make sure we don't get too full of ourselves. It happened in Golden State and it happened here for a period of time, things were going pretty well until we thought it was going to be easy and things were going to fall all night. One game a year they fall all night, otherwise it's a streaky kind of thing." Nelson on the post play: "We've got 2 guys who can go inside, plus Jamison off the bench. The more we play together we will go inside more. We started doing that tonight and it was effective." Nelson: "I envision the team playing as they did tonight for periods of the game. It's good to see that. That's my vision." Nelson: "My vision for the team is playing games like this. But we need consistency in playing this kind of game." Nelson on Delk: "In all the years that he's been playing, we could never stop him. I didn't really expect this kind of performance from him with his injury [strained hammy] and he hasn't really practiced that much. I did expect a better performance than the Golden State game, but I wasn't ready for this. He did so many great things besides scoring. His defense was solid, he was tough, he rebounded, and played a well all-around game." Nelson: "Didn't I tell you that Delk was good." Nelson on Jamison: "He really needs to settle in and it's a little bit of a different situation than he's used to, coming off the bench. He needs to just relax and let the game come to him. I thought the more he played the better he did that." Michael Finley: "It's still early to say we're gelling. We're moving in the right direction." Steve Nash: "I don't think we're playing anywhere near what we're capable of." Antoine Walker: "Well, I think we got open shots. We got penetration kick outs for good looks from the 3-point line. We were able to knock them down tonight. Guys were very focused on making their shots. But what we did tonight, we kept putting the pressure on. Every time that they would miss a shot, we'd push right back down again and give ourselves easy opportunities. That's the type of pressure we can put on people. In the 3rd quarter we showed how if we are clicking, we can beat you a lot of different ways. At times we have 5 3-point shooters on the floor and that makes us very difficult to guard." Walker: "We weren't perfect. But if we score 127 every night I don't think there's many teams that are going to keep up with us." Walker: "The 3rd quarter is what we're capable of doing. Obviously every night won't be like that. But we're capable of those 15-0 runs." Walker: "I know we are capable of doing it and I think that 3rd quarter was very impressive offensively. I think we can be very good if we continue to work and guys stay focused. As the games pick up and everybody understands, it's going to be somebody different every night. Who it is, we don't worry about it, we just go out and play. If a guy's hot we just milk him." Walker: "We're just feeding off each other. Every night will be somebody different. You see Tony Delk. That's the luxury and the great thing we have now." Walker on Delk: "Tonight, Tony got himself going on the defensive end first by getting those steals. He did a lot of different things out there. He drove them one time and then he hit the 3s on them." Tony Delk: "I think it was just me being aggressive, playing the way that I'm capable of playing. I think that's the way I've played my whole career, being a high-energy guy and playing on both ends." Delk: "Guys were looking for me and I made some shots. Being aggressive on one end made it easier for me on the other end." Travis Best on his circus shot: "That always helps the momentum continue. At that point we were already rolling." Jerry Sloan on his point guards: "That's one of the things we probably struggle with a little bit, but it wasn't all their fault. We had a difficult time going from point A to point B. When they zoned us, we started off in a situation where we wanted to try to duck our heads and go and not have any idea of what we are doing. Every shot that we missed because of that, they made a layup. If you don't understand a 24 second shot clock in basketball, especially if you are not as talented as the team you are playing, you are going to have a rude awakening. We had one tonight because they shot layups all night." Sloan on missing Arroyo: "We can't use that as an excuse. We just got a good lesson tonight on how to play." Sloan: "There's a lot of things we all have to learn, and we got a pretty good lesson tonight on how to play. I mean, they've got guys that can make shots, they've guys that can shoot 3s, they've got guys that can pass the ball. They've got a lot of different things - and we've just got a lot of work to do. That's okay. I understood that when we started." Matt Harpring on the 3rd quarter: "I just think we just tried to get into a running game with them. In the 1st quarter we played our game, we hung in there even in the 2nd quarter. We just played to their advantage and we got away from what we wanted to do." Harpring on the 3rd: "We gave them a lot of easy shots, easy layups and they got into a rhythm and we couldn't stop them." Harpring: "We've just got to keep getting better. We have to learn that we can't go out and play like it's a pick up game. In order for us to win, we have to play Utah Jazz basketball and if we don't play that way then we're not going to win." Raja Bell on Dallas' shooting: "I've been on the good end of that stick. When you score the way they do, you're going to beat teams even when they play well." Bell on the 3rd quarter: "You know, it's contagious, man, when somebody comes down and knocks down the 3, and the next guy comes down and knocks down the 3, and before you know it you have 5 people out there knocking down 3s. Once they get rolling like that it's hard to defend them, because they're spread out, they make you commit on the help defense, and then they kick it and they kick it. When a team like that gets hot, you have to hold on and try to stay close in order to strike - and we didn't stay close enough." DeShawn Stevenson: "They went to the zone, and we started getting passive on offense. When we started getting passive, they got aggressive, and after that the game was over." Raul Lopez: "It was a strange game because the 1st quarter we played really good. We had good control of the tempo of the game. But the 2nd and 3rd quarter was played really bad." A 3-pointer by Tony Delk gave Dallas an 18-7 lead with 6:45 remaining and I jinxed the team by commenting that Dallas was shooting 89% FG. Of course, Dallas then started missing shots like crazy, including layups, and Miami used and 15-5 run to go up 23-22 with 1:45 to go. The teams traded 3-pointers at the end of the quarter and Miami led 26-25 after 1. Miami shot 50% FG and Dallas shot 45% FG in the quarter. Rookie Udonis Haslem had 11 points and Tony Delk had 9 points. The game stayed really close in the 2nd quarter as neither team led by more than 3 points and there were 8 lead changes. Brian Grant hit a jumper at the quarter buzzer and Miami led 50-48 at the half. John Wallace had 11 points in the 2nd quarter. The refs were letting a lot go and only 8 free throws were attempted by both teams (2 by Dallas and 6 by Miami - that trend continued in the 3rd quarter as Dallas didn't go to the line once and Miami shot 4 free throws). The game remained close in the 3rd quarter with Dirk Nowitzki holding the fort for Dallas as he scored Dallas' first 10 points of the quarter and Dallas led 58-57 with 5 minutes left. A layup by Lamar Odom made it 63-64 with 3 minutes remaining and Dallas took off as the Mavs scored the next 10 points to go up 74-63 with 30 seconds to go. Dallas led 74-64 after 3. Nowitzki had 16 points on 7-10 FG in the 3rd quarter. Miami wouldn't go away and they scored 6 straight points to pull within 72-77 with 9:15 remaining. Rafer Alston said something not nice when the ref made a late call, waiting until the ball bounced off the rim before blowing the whistle [one of 2 obvious "if it goes in, I'm not calling" late whistles in this game], and earned a technical. Steve Nash hit the technical [Dallas' first free throw in 31 minutes] and went 1 of 2 from the line. A 3-pointer by Delk gave Dallas an 82-72 lead with 8:40 left. Dallas was still unable to pull away, but their lead hovered around 10 points. A 3-pointer by Odom pulled Miami within 89-97 with 3 minutes left, but Nash was fouled with the shot clock winding down and hit both free throws. Miami intentionally fouled 2 times and Dallas hit all 4 free throws for Dallas' final points. Dallas won 103-93. After such a nice start, it wasn't pretty the rest of the way and was like pulling teeth. Dallas' defense was very poor and their rebounding was non-existent, which allowed Miami to get hot and the undermanned Heat were never really out of the game. Dallas again benefited from their opponent missing starters as Eddie Jones and rookie Dwayne Wade did not play. But a win is a win is a win. Dallas shot 50.6% (39-77) FG including 9-19 3-pointers and Miami shot 47% (39-83) FG including 7-14 3-pointers. Miami out-rebounded Dallas 43-36 including 12-4 offensive rebounds [shades of last season with Dallas' pathetic offensive rebounding]. Dallas did continue their low turnover rate with just 12 turnovers, which Miami converted into 8 points. Miami committed 18 turnovers which Dallas converted into 18 points. Dirk Nowitzki was awesome on the offensive game (but hard to find on the defensive end and not going after the boards as aggressively as he can). He had 30 points including 12-22 FG and 6 rebounds. Steve Nash had a double-double with 18 points and 11 assists. He had one of his circus shots fall when he drove into the lane, ran into a wall and bounced off, threw the ball up as he was falling down, and it went in. Tony Delk had another good outing with 17 points including 6-9 FG and 3-6 3-pointers. Antoine Walker had 13 points, 9 rebounds, and 6 assists. And Michael Finley had 11 points and 7 rebounds as all of Dallas' starters were in double-digits for the 2nd straight game. Antawn Jamison chipped in 10 points and 6 rebounds off the bench in 23 minutes. Eduardo Najera's impact on the court is not reflected by the few stats he had. He had just 2 points and 0 rebounds in 19 minutes, but was one of the few players working hard defensively in this game. Travis Best had 2 points in 16 minutes and Shawn Bradley did not attempt a shot in 7 minutes. Udonis Haslem started strong with 11 of his 20 points coming in the 1st quarter. He was strong on the glass throughout and finished with 12 rebounds. But he did commit 5 turnovers. Brian Grant also had a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds. Lamar Odom was solid with 17 points, 6 rebounds, and 9 assists in 45 minutes. Mav for a summer John Wallace had a big 2nd quarter with 11 of his 19 points coming in the quarter. Rafer Alston had 15 points and 5 rebounds. Quotes Don Nelson: "The boxscore looks good, but I don't think we played very well. My hat is off to Miami. I thought they gave a great effort. They gave us everything we wanted, undermanned, and we ran into a hot team or we made them a hot team, I'm not sure. They made shots and I didn't know that it wasn't going to be a nightmare before it was all over." Nelson: "It's a game we should have won handily, but we didn't. But we did win." Nelson: "I don't think anybody was very good defensively. The only guy you can circle would be Eddie. We needed to put a stop to Lamar Odom and he did a really good job on Odom. We need a better all around performance from everybody." Nelson on Nowitzki: "He carried us offensively. He looked a little tired, but offensively he was really good. We ran a lot of things for him and when we got openings for him, he made a lot of right cuts and made the right shots." Nelson on Fortson not playing: "He's another player that's not always in the right position and needs to be with us longer before it's natural. Where as with Bradley, he knows. He's always in the right spot. He may not always do the right thing, but he's in the right spot to do the wrong things." Dirk Nowitzki: "It's awful. We won the game, but that's far from what we're capable of doing. We have to get it together a little quicker. We have a tough road trip coming up." Nowitzki: "We stunk. We beat the Miami Heat, who were missing 5 players. Why should we be happy?" Nowitzki: "I wasn't really part of the game in the 1st half. In the 3rd quarter, I just got some good looks. Steve is always looking for me on the break and so was Antoine Walker." Steve Nash: "We certainly weren't up to the standard we expect of ourselves." Nash: "This is not the standard we expect of ourselves. We have to play at a higher level than this. Dirk just did his job. He's well compensated to put the ball in the basket." Nash: "We're not playing anywhere near our capabilities yet. But it's nice to take advantage of some teams with some injuries and get some wins and get our confidence going and hopefully stay alive while we find ourselves." Antoine Walker on defense: "Well, we were just trying to rotate. We didn't want Lamar Odom posting up and finding guys, but he did a good job anyway and they were able to knock down their shots. They hadn't been shooting the basketball particularly well coming into tonight's game, but they really came out shooting the ball well. They're searching for a win and when their injured guys get back they're going to be a lot better." Walker: "Obviously, defense creates offense. As we continue to grow as a team we have to find ways to win and every night it's going to be different. You have to expect teams to play very well against you sometimes and we were able to keep our composure tonight. We were able to keep running and get easy shot opportunities. Tonight we were able to get Dirk some easy baskets and Steve did a good job finding guys throughout the night. We did a good job of distributing the basketball." Antawn Jamison: "There's 82 games in the season and I don't care how good of a team you are, there's going to be a stretch where you struggle, where things aren't going right, but we have yet to even get to that point. We're still trying to find out our defined roles and trying to get comfortable with that. The most important things is to get these victories while we're still learning and so far we've done that with 3 wins in a row. It's a learning curve and we've still got a long way to go." Jamison: "Miami was kind of short handed and I wouldn't say that we took them lightly, but that's one thing about a team that's affiliated with Pat Riley, they're going to play hard every night. They out-worked us tonight and out-played us, but we did a tremendous job when we needed to buckle down defensively and offensively we knocked down a lot of open shots." Jamison: "We expect to win big. But after 4 or 5 years of losing, this is a great feeling. Back in the day, if we won a game like this, we'd be hollering, thinking we had accomplished the world. But now, winning by 10 against a team that has been struggling is not suitable at all for this team." Stan Van Gundy on the end of the 3rd quarter: "That is a very good offensive team and they went on a run there when we couldn't hit our shots in that stretch. That was the ball game; we just couldn't make a run back at them." Van Gundy: "Even though they made the run, we didn't die and it didn't go to 20." Van Gundy: "We've still got some things, defensively, that we don't do real well situation wise. At the same time, Dirk Nowitzki makes his shots with guys on him - that guy can really play. That's a heck of a team. I thought we played their pick-and-roll game pretty well. I thought we handled that well. I am not saying we shut it down, but we handled it pretty well. Nowitzki got a couple of backcuts and then he got a couple of catch-and-shoots coming off a screen. I thought that was where they really hurt us." Lamar Odom: "That's a great offensive team. I thought we played against them fairly well. In that 3rd quarter, our offense gave in just a little bit and then they got hot. Then they just jabbed us the whole 4th quarter and kept us away." Odom: "Of course it's not a satisfying outcome. We really couldn't afford that run they had." Odom: "I can get my shot from anywhere on the court. I have to become more efficient. I'm getting to the rim and not finishing. In the 1st half, I missed 2 layups. In the 2nd half, I missed 2 layups. I thought I got pushed and shoved on a couple of those drives, but when you go to the basket hard and you start to finish you get those calls. Maybe I wasn't going hard enough. You've got to hit you layups, you've got to make your free throws and your open shots to beat a team like this." Brian Grant: "The only thing you can take out of tonight is that we truly competed. We had a little trouble getting through the 1-5 pick-and-roll and Nowitzki just got hot. When he is shooting like that, you can't give him room. There were times when I was right on him, and he was hitting those. Other times, Nash was setting good cross screens, he gets half a second and he hits a shot."
