Dallas at LA Clippers (December 10) The game was tied 9-9 with 9 minutes left and Dallas then went on a 26-6 monster run to go up 35-15 with 2:45 left. Dallas shot 11-13 FG and the Clippers committed 5 turnovers during the run. Dallas led 39-19 after 1. Michael Finley had 16 points including 7-8 FG and Antoine Walker had 11 points on 5-5 FG. Dallas shot 74% FG including 4-5 3-pointers. Unfortunately with building a big lead early, it is easy for a team to slack off afterwards and that is exactly was Dallas did. After Walker hit a shot to open the 2nd quarter and give Dallas their largest lead, the Clippers scored the next 6 points as Dallas missed dumb shots and the Clippers worked at cutting away at the Mavs' lead and Dallas struggled to keep their lead in the teens. Dallas led 53-39 with 6 minutes to go and the Clippers went on an 11-2 run to make it a game again at 50-55 with 2:40 left. Corey Maggette, who was having a monster quarter with 14 points, left the game with a sprained ankle with 5 minutes left, but was able to return during the 3rd quarter. Chris Wilcox got a dunk near the quarter's end and Dallas' lead was only 60-56 at the half. Finley had a monster half with 29 points including 13-16 FG and Maggette had 20 points. Dallas scored the first 6 points of the 3rd quarter to go up 66-56 with 10:10 remaining, but the Clippers scored the next 4 points to put Dallas' lead back in single-digits. Dallas led 72-64 with 6:40 to go and the Clippers went on a 9-2 run to pull within 73-74 with 4 minutes left. Dallas scored the next 4 points to maintain a small lead. Dallas led 82-77 after 3. Dallas took their largest lead of the quarter at 88-79 with 10:35 left, but the Clippers wouldn't go away. The Clippers used an 11-2 run to pull within 95-96 with 3 minutes to go. After the teams traded turnovers, Steve Nash hit a jumper (only his 2nd made field goal of the game) and Wilcox hit 1 of 2 free throws and Dallas led 98-96 with 2 minutes left. Elton Brand blocked a shot and Wilcox got a layup to tie the game with 1:26 left. Finley missed a shot, but Walker got the rebound and was fouled. He hit 1 of 2 free throws with 55 seconds left. Then it got really ugly as both teams blew chances to win the game. The Clippers missed on 3 consecutive attempts before Dallas finally got the rebound and Nash was intentionally fouled. Nash went to the line and clanked both free throws with 12 seconds to go - he had hit 23 straight free throws prior to these 2 misses. The Clippers called timeout. After the inbounds, they had trouble getting a good look before Brand misses a shot, Maggette got the rebound and misses the layup, Finley tapped the ball outside, but it went right to Glen Rice and he nailed the jumper as the buzzer sounded for the win. The Clippers won 100-99. This is what you call choking. The Mavs fell asleep after building such a large lead in the 1st quarter and let the Clippers back in the game instead of stepping on their throat and getting the easy win. Give the Clippers credit for fighting their way back into the game, but Dallas choked and didn't deserve to win after the way they played after the 1st quarter. After shooting so well in the 1st quarter, Dallas' shots didn't fall very well and they finished shooting 46.6% (41-88) FG while the Clippers were fairly consistent in shooting well throughout (it was turnovers that hurt them) and finished shooting 52.6% (41-78) FG. And it wouldn't have been such a close game if the Clippers had shot their free throws better. The Clippers shot 15-25 FT and Dallas shot 11-16 FT. The Clippers committed 16 turnovers which Dallas turned into 24 points while Dallas committed 9 turnovers which the Clippers converted into 10 points. Dallas held a slight 40-39 rebounding edge. The Clippers only led 11 seconds in the entire game (and that came early in the 1st quarter) but hit the only shot that mattered. The hero of the game only scored 6 points on 3-9 FG, but when you hit the game winner at the buzzer, you are the hero. Glen Rice was fresh from IR - activated the day of the game. He also had 6 rebounds in 20 minutes. Corey Maggette had a stellar game with 30 points including 11-19 FG, 5 rebounds, and 6 assists. Chris Wilcox also played well with 21 points including 9-11 FG and 8 rebounds before fouling out with a minute left. Elton Brand had his usual double-double with 18 points on 7-10 FG and 4-8 FT (his weakness) and 10 rebounds. He also had 3 blocks, but turned the ball over 5 times. No other Clipper was in double-digits. Dallas wasted an awesome game from Michael Finley. Finley had 38 points including 17-26 FG (and some tough, tough shots) and 7 rebounds in playing all 48 minutes - he injured his big toe during the 3rd quarter, but still played on. He did miss his last 5 shots of the game. Antoine Walker was solid with 21 points, 7 rebounds, and 10 assists. But Steve Nash had a miserable game, capped by the 2 missed free throws. He only had 6 points including 2-12 FG and 5 assists in 34 lack-luster minutes. Dirk Nowitzki returned after missing 5 games with a sprained ankle and did not perform well. His minutes were limited by both the coaches and foul trouble. He had 9 points on 4-12 FG and just 3 rebounds in 27 minutes. Danny Fortson had 10 points on a perfect 4-4 FG and 2-2 FT and 7 rebounds in 20 minutes. Antawn Jamison was the 4th Mavs in double-digits with 10 points and 8 rebounds. No other Mav had more than 2 points. Quotes Mike Dunleavy: "The win is important, very important, but most of all for them; not for me, because I understand what it takes to win and how to do it. The best attribute about the guys is that they work hard and never give up. Now we just have to learn how to harness that energy and sustain it throughout the entire game." Dunleavy: "I thought our ball movement tonight was great, we didn't settle for any outside shots we were striving to attack the rim, which we have been stressing since camp. And in doing that we found guys for dunks left and right." Dunleavy on the game winner: "Rice makes good decisions and the right plays for us when he's out there. Having that veteran guy out there at times has worked for us. And when the ball got to him that was as much as I could hope for. I was thinking, I got to count this one! Really, it's time to pay the rent." Dunleavy: "Obviously, we got a big, big break. Steve Nash is a great, great free throw shooter and for him to miss 2 free throws like that, that was unusual, to say the least. I'm speechless about that." Dunleavy on Nash at the line: "He was the last guy I would want us to foul. When he went to the line, I was thinking, 'OK, now we're down 3. Let's start thinking of plays for a 3-pointer.'" Elton Brand: "It feels good to be a part of this. We owed it to the fans for the Minnesota game the other day. They saw a last second buzzer beater on the other side, so to hit one today, it's a great feeling." Corey Maggette: "It was a great team effort. Guys came in and stepped up. A lot of guys that haven't been playing came in and played well. Chris Wilcox came in and played well." Maggette on his sprained ankle: "I'm a little sore, but I wanted to win. I was running out there purely on adrenaline. It started to loosen up there a little bit, then I didn't feel the pain." Glen Rice on the game winner: "It felt great. Being a shooter, you've got to be ready. The legs are going to come. Eventually the shots will fall. Tonight, it went in at the right time. I was able to catch it in rhythm and stroke it. Being a shooter, you've got to be ready." Rice: "Any time you're not shooting the ball that well, you've got to keep shooting because eventually it's going to go in." Rice: "It felt great. That one did catch me right in rhythm. We had some time on the clock and fortunately things worked out in our favor. I like catching the ball right in rhythm, and the ball rolled out of the pile and I was there to pick it up in rhythm and stroke it." Don Nelson: "The game was disappointing. I think we lost it in the 2nd quarter. What a difference between the 2 quarters. We really let them back in the game by doing some unlikely things. We missed free throws and did not execute offensively. It was a comedy of errors out there." Nelson: "We have a lot of respect for them anyway. We came into the game thinking it would not be easy. They played us very well in the preseason and once Brand gets healthy they are going to be a good team." Nelson on Nash: "I've never seen him do that [miss 2 free throws near the end of the game] before in his career. His game wasn't right all night." Michael Finley on batting the missed shot outside, when Rice grabbed it and made the game winner: "I should have grabbed it. I thought I didn't have an opportunity to grab it, so I didn't want anybody else to get it. And I didn't know there was that much time left. I hit it out and he made the shot." Steve Nash: "I blame myself. This loss is my fault. I just didn't have a good game." Nash: "I cost us the game. That's how I feel. It's hard to swallow, but I have to bounce back." Nash: "I feel real comfortable and confident at the end of games at the free throw line. Tonight I didn't. I never really felt like I was here. I was out to lunch all day. I couldn't get anything going and it showed." Dallas took their first lead of the game vs the Lakers this season a minute into the game (they never led in the previous 2 games). Dallas scored 9 straight points, including 2 free throws after Shaquille O'Neal was called for a flagrant foul, to go up 15-6 with 7:40 left. The Lakers decided to pick a fight with ref Steve Javie - and lost, of course. Devean George was called for technical after contact with Antoine Walker and the Lakers disagreed with the call. Gary Payton argued with Javie about the T while bringing up the ball and said one word too many as Javie gave him a T 5 seconds after George got his. Payton made matters worse by tossing the ball pass Javie to the far baseline instead tossing it to Javie or simply putting it on the floor and Javie tossed Payton [grumble, I did not like seeing Payton tossed for this - yeah Payton was in the wrong and everyone knows that Javie has the quickest whistle in the league, but it was not a toss-worthy event]. Steve Nash hit all 3 technical free throws to give Dallas a 24-12 lead with 4:50 to go. The Lakers scored the next 6 points to pull within 18-24 with 3:15 remaining, but Dallas closed the quarter with a 9-1 run and led 33-19 after 1. Nash had 11 points. The Lakers only shot 36% FG (including 0-6 FG by Kobe Bryant) and Dallas shot 46% FG. Dallas had the big advantage at the line (reversed in the 2nd quarter) with 11-14 FT while the Lakers shot 2-4 FT. Dirk Nowitzki hit a jumper to open the 2nd quarter, but the Lakers then scored the next 11 points, with 6 from Kareem Rush, to pull within 30-35 with 9:30 remaining. O'Neal picked up his 3rd foul with 8:30 left and sat for the rest of the half (he wasn't having a good half anyways as he had just 6 points on 2-2 FG and 2-4 FT - how O'Neal only gets 2 FG attempts vs the Mavs is beyond me). The Lakers didn't miss him as they then scored the next 10 points to go up 42-39 with 5:50 to go. Antawn Jamison got a layup and Antoine Walker hit a 3-pointer to give Dallas back the lead and the Mavs held a small lead the rest of the quarter. Dallas led 57-52 at the half. Nowitzki had 11 points in the 2nd quarter (19 for the half), Rush had 12 points, and Bryon Russell had 9 points. The Lakers shot 5-6 FT in the 2nd quarter while Dallas did not go to the line once. A layup by Karl Malone pulled the Lakers within 59-61 with 10:10 remaining, but Dallas then scored the next 10 points to go up 71-59 with 7:45 left. The Lakers scored the next 6 points, but could get no closer than 6 points the rest of the way. Dallas led 78-72 with 4 minutes remaining and closed the quarter with a 10-1 run as the Lakers missed their last 6 shots of the quarter. Dallas led 88-73 after 3. Josh Howard had 11 points in the 3rd quarter. A 3-pointer by Walker gave Dallas a 95-75 lead with 10 minutes to go and another 3 by Walker gave Dallas their largest lead at 100-79 with 7:40 left. Dallas led 102-85 with 4:40 left and for some dumb reason started playing hack-a-Shaq and running the clock down on offense. Although O'Neal was not hitting his free throws, the strategy nearly blew up in Dallas' face as the Mavs did not score during the 2 1/2 minutes hack-a-Shaq was employed. O'Neal shot 3-10 FT during hack-a-Shaq and Bryant hit 3 free throws as he was fouled on a 3-point attempt before the intentional foul was made on O'Neal and Dallas' lead was just 102-91 with 2:30 left (the lead stayed that way 20 more seconds as Walker was called for the offensive foul and O'Neal missed 2 more free throws). Howard finally ended Dallas' drought when he hit 2 free throws with 2:10 to go to make it a 13-point lead. Bryant missed a shot and Nash hit 2 free throws to basically seal the win with 1:50 remaining. Dallas won 110-93. Finally, finally, finally!!! No chokes (though I did not like the junk going on in the 4th quarter) and the Mavs managed to defeat the Lakers in LA. It was not as sweet of a win as it should have been with the terrible loss 2 nights before vs the Clippers, but the Mavs finally got the monkey off their back. Dallas last won vs the Lakers in LA on December 12, 1990 - a string of 26 straight losses. In addition, the Lakers had won 27 straight times at home (regular season) and 10 straight games overall. The win also tied Don Nelson with Pat Riley for career coaching wins with 1,110 wins [Lenny Wilkens has the most with 1,292 wins]. Dallas shot 44.1% (41-93) FG and the Lakers shot 42.5% (34-80) FG. Dallas made 2 more free throws than the Lakers despite attempting 12 less. Dallas shot 24-27 FT and the Lakers shot 22-39 FT. The Mavs out-rebounded the Lakers 48-42 including 15-12 offensive. In a shocker, Dallas out-scored the Lakers 48-42 in the paint. It was a 4-prong attack by Dallas as they had 4 players score more than 15 points and no one else with more than 6 points. Antoine Walker was again solid with 27 points on 12-22 FG, 10 rebounds, and 7 assists. He also had the fun of defending O'Neal some during the 4th quarter and did a decent job. Dirk Nowitzki also had 27 points and had 12 rebounds and 5 assists in playing 46 minutes. Steve Nash recovered from his terrible game vs the Clippers to have a good outing with 23 points including 11-12 FT, 5 rebounds, and 7 assists. And the rookie stepped up in Michael Finley's absence. Josh Howard played very well in a big game with 17 points and 13 rebounds including 5 offensive. Antawn Jamison was very quiet with just 6 points and 1 rebound before fouling out on hack-a-Shaq. Danny Fortson started and had 4 points and 6 rebounds (4 offensive) in 18 minutes. Shawn Bradley only played 3 minutes in the 1st half and did not play in the 2nd half due to back spasms. Once again Shaquille O'Neal had a relatively quiet night against the Mavs as the Mavs doubled him all the time - the zone really bothered the Lakers. O'Neal had 25 points on 7-7 FG and 11-24 FT and 14 rebounds including 7 offensive. He also turned the ball over 5 times. Kobe Bryant struggled with 15 points including 4-18 FG, but did have 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Karl Malone had 14 points and 7 rebounds. With most of their numbers coming in the 2nd quarter, Kareem Rush had 12 points and Bryon Russell had 11 points. Devean George had 8 points. Derek Fisher had a miserable night with an imperfect 0-9 FG, 0-4 3-pointers, and 0-2 FT. He did have 5 assists, though. The Lakers had a classless act when they showed Karl Malone's elbow to Steve Nash's mouth as part of a video montage on the jumbotron prior to the game and the crowd let out a big cheer. The Mavs players were not happy with that replay and fan reaction and it gave the Mavs some extra motivation. [I also felt Dallas' "Shaq Albert" cartoon during the Laker game in Dallas stepped over the line and was going to bash Dallas for it, until I looked down on the court and saw Shaquille O'Neal doubled over with laughter - and decided to let it go without comment since the subject found it so funny.] Quotes Don Nelson: "I wanted to win this game in the worst way. To win here after so many years is sweet." Nelson: "I wanted to win this game in the worst way. I wasn't here for all the losses, but enough of them." Nelson: "Walker's been great all year. I'm not saying he's the best player on this team - probably Nowitzki is. But he is the only guy who has played like an All-Star all year long. We just think he is a sensational basketball player." Nelson on Howard: "He's had several games where he's really stood up and we've always liked him as a player but now he's getting an opportunity to show what he can do. We needed a big effort because with Mike out, the way Mike was playing we really needed a guy to get rebounds and guard. And he made a couple of big shots for us." Nelson on hack-a-Shaq: "I didn't think his free throws looked that good." Dirk Nowitzki: "It was sweet to win when we were playing without Michael. We've been cold shooting and Michael has been our hottest player. We were really worried about his being out. But we have a lot of talent on our team." Nowitzki: "We had been able to beat them at (their) home. I haven't been able to do that my whole career. Even though we were real close a lot of times, we still found ways to lose it at the end. It's great to come up with a win." Nowitzki: "I'm not a big believer in sending messages to the league. But it was a great win for us. Every time we come here, we've been reading about we can't win here." Nowitzki on a replay of Malone's elbow hit Nash in the mouth being shown on the jumbotron prior to the game and the crowd cheering: "You can't show that play. It was a dirty play. I don't think it should be in any highlight tape. It was bad. We actually got all fired up about that. It just got us more ready to play. It was a big deal." Steve Nash: "It feels good. It's been a long time coming. We stuck together tonight." Nash: "I know I've made the mistake a lot this year of being a little too thoughtful. I think at times all of us have been trying to fit together instead of being aggressive. We came out aggressive and set the tone." Antoine Walker: "Obviously, up to this point, they thought we couldn't play with them. Shaq made a lot of comments about us being pretenders and not contenders." Walker: "When a team dominates 46 of 51 times, it's very important that we got a win tonight. On top of that, we lost Wednesday night in a game we should have won. We have to show the Lakers we can play with them. Up to this point, they thought we couldn't play them." Walker: "Hopefully, we can keep this game in our minds as the season goes on. We've lost games on the road because we always get down on ourselves when shots are not falling and we don't keep playing. That's a team you've got to go through to win a championship, and this is obviously a good start in the right direction." Walker: "You see when they made their run in the 2nd quarter we bounced right back. That's something we didn't do early in the season against anybody, let alone the Lakers on the road. Hopefully, it can kickstart our season and get us going on the road and hopefully turn the corner." Walker on the early whistles: "I think what happened was the Karl Malone situation. The referees were aware of that. So they came in thinking we might go after them because of Steve. They just wanted to eliminate it early." Danny Fortson: "Steve Javie let it be known that there was not going to be any nonsense going on. I thought he did a good job of officiating the game and making sure nothing got out of control." Phil Jackson on losing: "We certainly have been inching toward that fallout in the last couple games, so it's no surprise to us that it happened." Jackson: "I thought we were out of sorts tonight. Not all of us, but a lot of us were." Jackson on Steve Javie and the quick whistles: "He obviously was keyed up for the game. The referees were probably forewarned by the league." Jackson on hack-a-Shaq: "I was hoping that we can cash in on it because I thought it was the golden opportunity for us to do so. We never could successfully complete 2 free throws and get back under 10 points. And there were plenty of opportunities there to take advantage of it." Jackson on the lane violation called on O'Neal: "I thought it ruined his concentration and I spared him the embarrassment of having to go out to the line anymore [by pulling him]." Kobe Bryant: "At the start of the game, they came out and made a couple of shots and the technicals really got us out of sync. From that point on, it was an uphill battle." Bryant on hack-a-Shaq: "It's tough to get a rhythm going when they do that. It's all about momentum when you're trying to make a comeback. So it was a smart strategy on their part." Karl Malone on losing: "Forgot what it felt like. We've been flirting with one of these the last 2 or 3 games. They wanted it more than we did. We've been kind of sleepwalking." Malone: "Give them credit. They wanted it more than we did." Malone: "When a team comes into your place, you have to give them credit and go on and not look for excuses. In the end, it comes down to us as players." Malone on the early whistles: "Maybe we thought about it instead of playing. Any time you lose a guy, we have to step up as a team and continue to play and I don't think we did that."
